There are no changes expected in the combined salaries of the UH assistant coaching staff for football.

While head coach Greg McMackin is free to change the salaries of each of the nine assistants, the total amount he has available will remain in the ballpark of about $1 million.

Each of the nine assistants are on one-year contracts that expire March 31. It is believed eight of them will be renewed. There is a posted opening for an assistant coaching job.

There also is an opening for a director of player personnel, which is currently filled by Tony Tuioti. Na Koa, the football booster club, pays the salary for that position. Tuioti is believed to be a candidate for the vacant assistant coach’s position. His contract as director of player personnel also expires March 31.

    NO NO NO JIM, N-O!!!!

There is no “either”. It’s gotta be a FLAT OUT student fee. Individually pricing students means they gotta show up, student fee means guaranteed income no matter what!!!

Implementing the student fee despite the student body protests should be considered part of their “education” in preparation for entry into the real world.

Former ASUH President and now Regent G. Teichman *cautioned* that students will want “value” in exchange for imposing a student fee. Yeah, right! Look at all the “value” the rest of us are getting for all the taxes we are paying! 👿

    http://www.footballscoop.com/?cat=24

Even football scoops had this posted on their site:

Hawaii: Defensive line coach Dave Aranda has been promoted the defensive coordinator. Our source tells us Craig Lee will remain as linebackers coach. Director of player personnel will move from director of player personnel to defensive line coach. George Lumpkin will move into the director of player personnel position.

The media should hold off on making this announcement until it’s official, like hearing it from Coach Mack. Or hearing it from the school’s official press release. But nope. Somebody had loose lips, and leaked information that they shouldn’t have. Who or whomever leaked this information should be ashamed. Because it did bring unwanted scrutiny towards the program, especially when the national media catches wind that UH head coach hasn’t even reviewed the applicants (which he’s required by law) Or even to the fact that the March 3rd deadline for accepting applications (for the non coaching position) hasn’t passed. I can only imagine that getting to the bottom of all this, as in why things get leaked out prematurely in this instance, there’s likely a lot of interrogation as a result as to who/whom did this within UH football program. And that’s the way it should be.

I read that and on one hand I can see what Tiechman is saying like suggesting opening Ching Field, swimming pool, etc for student use…. BUT aren’t those areas already open for use during certain times, especially Ching Field for intramural sports?!?!?!?!!?

Two years ago, I e-mailed McNamara about offering different tiers of membership to “Manoa Maniacs”, i.e. the more you pay the more stuff you get in addition to free admission and the “stuff” can be discounts or goodies from UH’s corporate sponsors of UH athletics.

Well now, should a fee be imposed, same thing. Toss in some incentives and our corporate sponsors SHOULD help with this.

SURE, it’s not necessary, but if they wanna _____ about it, then let’s see if JD can “bend” even further.

  51. Kazz February 19, 2010 9:08 am

    More from footballscoop.com:

It’s funny you brought up this line for todays blog contest because I was going to say something about a certain person from another newspaper yesterday and his comments he made on his blog. I know you respect the person but to talk ill willed about this blog and its creator is kind of childish. Oh and I agree, I love the way this blog is run and I also love the people that frequent this blog. It is more than just a blog it is a family, so if he doesn’t like it he can go and cry to someone that is willing to listen.

The statement from the Board of Regents to run the Athletic Department like a business is silly. Jim Donovan can’t make a major move without approval from Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw. Nothing against teachers but would you name one to be your CEO of a $30 million a year company? Teachers do a wonderful job in the class room for which they were trained. Making economic and financial decisions that require (to put it bluntly) balls is not what they do best. Anyone familiar with large institution’s like UH know that those who get ahead are the one’s who don’t make mistakes or ruffle feathers. You can’t run a business like that. JMO

  79. Stephen Tsai February 19, 2010 10:32 am

I think the digs were prompted when I joked about Rolo’s picture and the Hummer. But Rolo was OK with the picture, since he asked to see it after I shot it. And I’ve got a pic (which I didn’t run) of Paipai posing with the shaka sign in front of the Hummer.
As for Dustin Blount, we’ve got a running gag where he stops by and stares at me until I take his picture. I think I’m the only reporter who talks to him.
Even the chancellor liked the picture I had of her husband.
I’ve never had a complaint about a person’s picture running, but I’ve actually had complaints why I don’t run pictures.

What in the world is wrong with our State House when they can’t figure out the priorities between clothes lines, solar apparatus, and the American flag. They vote to allow the first two but not the flag. Then the chair tries to placate the veterans by promising a task force to study the situation!!! Just another great example of bumbling bureaucracy. It’s shameful that veterans have to go what they do to provide opportunities for politicians to show their stupidity. Why not just spit in the veterans’ faces? Am I upset?!! Grrrrrrr….

Don’t forget that Saturday’s baseball game starts at 1:05 pm

    Carried over from last night:

A quick reminder We have an extra basketball ticket for the tomorrow night’s two-fer. The women play LaTech at 5 pm and the men play Cal Poly at 8 pm. We have season tickets for both teams which is why we’re giving one set away. Protector took one of the extras. Remember, you can sit anywhere you want during the first game and can find the Tsai-ko regulars at the second game in several different locations.

We also have two men’s basketball tickets to give away for February 25 – DrDoc has a meeting he must attend, and I plan to go the baseball game.

Later in March, we’ll have both volleyball and baseball tickets avaikable, but I’ll post the information closer to the date.

If you’d like a ticket or two, please send me an e-mail to swood at hoku dot com. Be sure to include your real name and a daytime or cell telephone number plus which sporting event you’d like to attend.

    Slugger: Your #150 “K.D. & B.R.S” from yesterday – who are they?

JM2375: Alas, there cannot be more non-UH revenue-producing events at the Stan Sheriff Center without going through a lot hoopdedoo. I’ve explained this before in detail, but if you really want to make a difference, then you have to attend the City Council meeting next Wednesday and speak up. The Agenda and the new version of the legislation are not yet posted on the City’s website, but as soon as they are, I’ll post it here.

Another way to really make a difference over the long run is for Tsai-kos who live in either the McCully/Mo`ili`ili or the Manoa Neighborhood Board areas to raise the issues at one of their monthly meetings.

LEGISLATIVE RESPONSE TO A MANDATORY STUDENT ACTIVITY FEE; Will have an update by Monday afternoon as to whether there is any interest in having the Legislature pass a resolution urging the Board of Regents, the Manoa Chancellor. the Department of Athletics, Outreach College, and other interested parties such as the Faculty Senate, Graduate Students Organization, and Associated Students of the University of Hawai`i to work together to address the issues and implement a workable solution.

Although a resolution expresses the intent of the Legislature, it is not a law so the BOR can ignore it.

Garret: Comparing UH to the University of California System is not fair nor realistic. The overall population base in California is what? 30 times larger? Furthermore, unlike here, the public school systems in California are not funded by the state but at the local level.

I am still trying to get current information about Aloha Stadium upgrades. Sorry that it’s taking so long, but other more personal issues have pushed their way to the top of my List Of Things To Do.

Until a comprehensive long-term alumni program is developed for the entire UH System, we might as well get used to making do and raising funds the same way local folks have done so for all kinds of educational programs. I wonder how many Zippys Chili tickets we’d have to sell?

    RE: Old Diver comment #78

Yup. Just finished reading the print ‘Tiser over brunch — specifically Ferd’s column and the Regents story (and ST, of course). I had a similar reaction. While it is reasonable to ask JD to come up with a plan, will he have the authority to implement it?

Government institutions, departments, personnel, and operations are an expense on the (State) system. When they expand, offer more services, request pay raises, etc., they are an expense looking to become a bigger expense. This is not a criticism of the system–but a perspective. They do not generate revenue except in taxes and fees–which another department handles.

True businesses generate revenue to offset their expenses. When the expenses exceed the revenue, the business fails. Business executives have the authority to hire, fire, and affect system changes in order for the business to survive.

Like Old Diver implied, the system is not designed to be run like a business. There are probably a ton of rules, regulations, procedures and bureaucracy that will hinder that. Maybe rightfully so.

UH athletics is somewhat different in that it generates some revenue through ticket sales, TV, and other means. But this revenue was never intended to offset all expenses of the department.

While I have great confidence that JD will think outside the box and come up with a business plan, he is not the only one who needs to think outside the box and modify their paradigms.

  111. anonymous February 19, 2010 12:24 pm

Regarding the BOR decision of making inquires into the athletic budget deficit shows me that they are fulfilling their leadership roles. Maybe this has something to do with the Keith Amemiya effect, where he’s taken one of the highest positions (Exec. director of the BOR) at the university as it involves working with the president, chancellors and regents on policy and operational issues, and where in the future the public will probably be seeing a different way they do things up there at UH.

What needs to happen is UH needs more accountability.

    Transparency.

More of the leadership, like the BOR, micromanaging.

    More proactiveness and less reactiveness.

And for the athletic department to be run like a business.
It has to be. In fact I think if someone asked JD he’d probably say it has been (ever since his predecessor left) .

With Amemiya around I suspect that more things will come into alignment.

I’m not sure if he’s on the job yet. Or if he’s working behind the scene. But I think if he and the BOR looked at the athletic department’s financial statement (2007-2008) it shows some promise in some areas-like Broadcast, television, radio, and internet rights-$2,933,274.00 (which is around 10x more than the next WAC school),contributions-$5,221,950.00,Ticket sales $8,553,500.00 and royalties, licensing, advertisements and sponsorship-$2,318,554.00.

And an expenditure of $4,228,277.00 for team travel, which should be classified as a hardship.

I think any one looking at UH’s athletic department’s financial statement would be naive in not noticing that UH gets no financial support from student fees (which if they did it would solve the deficit as I understand it). I hope the BOR takes note of this, instead of coming down really hard on JD.

But the thing about JD, though, is that I can see that he does have a mind for business. He does look at ways to curb expenses. He is creative, like how he mentioned on a show recently where UH’s lined a deal in Japan to televise UH football games on a delayed basis. And where he recently put out a plea for his coaches to voluntarily take a 5% salary cut. Personally, I think JD welcomes the challenge from the BOR into improving the situation.

  120. Old Diver February 19, 2010 12:56 pm

    Regarding # 111

I agree about accountability at UH, and I’m not talking about the athletic department. As I stated earlier, making statements that the athletic department needs to be run like a business is not understanding how a business is run. The last word does not end with JD. JD is not the CEO. He is a division manager who must follow rules made up by people in government, not business people. And government being the way it is, changing those rules are a cumbersome non-business like process. He must follow the same rules as the Department of Transportation. I’m not saying that is a bad thing, I’m just saying that’s how it is. JD’s hands are tied, and the BOR is expecting him to take on a gorilla.

  143. Kazz February 19, 2010 2:02 pm

Rainbow Wahine hands Utah their first loss of the season.

Complete stats not available yet, but while Utah out hit the Wahine by the slimmest of margins (10-9) they also led UH with ERRORS, I believe it was 7-2.

Interesting replacements this game with Aguirre replacing Puu-Warren at ROF, and Jenna Rodriguez back to LOF and into the batting order again. Also, no Pagaduan as Yoshikawa replaced her at 2nd and Iwata finding her way back to SS.

Next, the Wahine face off against another MWC opponent in the hosting team UNLV set for 6pm I believe Nevada time.

Sorry, will be preparing to head out to “Da Les” by then and no can keep track.

    nvm, mis-read it.

  167. Ralph February 19, 2010 3:57 pm

Kazz lineup change. Remember at the stadium, 8 out of 9 at bats before she one upped me by hitting a homer-ROF changed. Also, the slow start with hitting and fielding for our second baseperson. Iwata is not that far off from Dara’s hitting and K total. Looks like Coolen has options which is good, hit and field, the best will play.

  168. Ralph February 19, 2010 3:59 pm

Kazz as you posted last night, Utah has a very young infield, the lights are on, who will respond under pressure or at least game day. Seven errors are a lot to over come, but anxious feet and hands can lead to lots of muffed fielding errors.

  169. d1島 February 19, 2010 3:59 pm

Kazz should consider changing careers soon.

  171. Ralph February 19, 2010 4:03 pm

Iwata didn’t get to play in the championship series of the Paradise Classic last weekend. Sometimes sitting and watching will help a player see what needs to be done to be successful on the field.

UNLV is a tougher opponent. Good luck to the Na Wahine.

  175. Stephen Tsai February 19, 2010 4:23 pm

Not sure if you’ve seen her, but JuJu is really petite. She looked like she was in her 12th month of pregnancy. So her giving birth to a 6 pounder is the equivalent of Koamahu giving birth to a 45-pounder.

  180. expat February 19, 2010 5:00 pm

The whole flagpole thing is interesting. Generally you would expect the GOP to stay away from passing legislation that overturned a community restriction. After all, the community restriction is a rule put in place and maintained by the majority. The GOP isn’t exactly renown for protecting the rights of any minority.

First off, the guy who wants to fly his flag can get his community restrictions overturned by working through his association and repealing that part of the covenant.

Secondly, the legislature can’t just allow an exemption for US flags in communities. If they allow one kind of flag they have to allow others. That vet has to ask himself if he is okay with his neighbor putting up an Iraqi flag, or a gay pride flag, or something else that he might find personally offensive. If he wants the right, he needs to want an equivalent right for everyone. I didn’t see any quotations from vets mentioning how everyone should have the right to fly whatever flag they wanted — just how they should have the right to fly the US flag.

Ironically, one thing the US flag should represent is the right of someone to fly something other than it.

Of the course the GOP sees an opportunity to score some political points, but this is a case of maybe being careful of what they wish for.

Sort of like school prayer — those in favor never seem to be agitating for their kids to be exposed to the prayers of religions other than theirs.

The Georgian skaters were pretty good. Amazing the girl is only 15 and is an American citizen. Or maybe she used to be? She is also looks to be part Japanese. The Georgian president rushed her citizenship papers so she could skate at the Olympics.

I thought once you renounced your US citizenship you could not get it back. Or is it a dual-citizenship because she is a minor.

Seems like the new chief told Wes in confidence about his hiring & wanted Wes to wait a couple of days before putting it in the paper. But the other guys broke the story. 195. Kazz (blkberry_storm) February 19, 2010 8:55 pm

    Ralph,

Utah’s infield was young but they were also 5-0. No excuses plus Utah’s pitcher is pretty good.

  204. whitey February 19, 2010 10:25 pm

Congrats to Lindsey Vonn and Julie Mancuso. Why?? Both women do their cross training on Maui.

  205. whitey February 19, 2010 10:28 pm

After reading about UH financial plight and looking for outside help, JD should make appt with Google and meet with their leaders. He doesn’t have to go to the mainland, they come to Maui every weekend for paddleboard and kite surfing lessons.

  206. whitey February 19, 2010 10:29 pm

And Julie’s family owns Maui Farms.

  207. whitey February 19, 2010 10:30 pm

  208. A-House February 19, 2010 10:32 pm

It is very gratifying to see that the “outer island” teams are being represented and recognized as best in the state!!

As others have said, get plenty good players out there.

Exciting beginning to the BaseBow season…go get ’em tomorrow!

  215. Slugger February 19, 2010 11:02 pm

Are we still waiting for a ticket giveaway?

I like my blogs with food and fun.

If not, I STILL like my blogs with food and fun.

    Night all!

  216. Pomai February 19, 2010 11:04 pm

Wow just got home from the baseball opener… Didn’t turn out the way we wanted but still was a good game. Now who wants one of the tickets, just post it on the blog here. Will meet you at the stadium an give it to you.

  217. Slugger February 19, 2010 11:04 pm

    Congrats, Pomai!

ST ~ I was calling you tonight to figure out if anyone was going to be sitting in the seats you gave away for last night’s game…there was! Good view.

  218. d1島 February 19, 2010 11:04 pm

It was nice to see so many other Tsaikos at the Les tonight; a great opening night crowd overall!

    Congratulations Pomai!
Maybe you might consider taking SteveM; he sure looked starry-eyed tonight being in the stadium for the first time…although, with a 1:05 first pitch, he may not enjoy those exact seats as much! 🙂

  219. Slugger February 19, 2010 11:06 pm

    Pomai,

I could use one ticket, please. What time you getting there tomorrow?

  220. Pomai February 19, 2010 11:06 pm

Ralph, Kekoa, SteveM and BG, do you want to go again, let me know here or on FB or email.

ST I will call you in the AM.

  221. d1島 February 19, 2010 11:09 pm

    expat,

You seem to have a good handle on the crux of the issue there although it seems it’s not so much about flying the flag itself so much as erecting a flag pole from which to fly it.

But your basic idea is right, those who are asking the State to address this are really trying to get the government more into treading on private property rights. That’s something that needs to be approached very carefully.

  222. al February 19, 2010 11:12 pm

duffer, whitey….kaimuki beat molokai tonight for the girls d2 crown 42-31.

  225. Bigislandkurt February 19, 2010 11:36 pm

Congrats to Lahaina Lady Lunas. Great win for one of Hawaii’s great historic schools.

Konawaena will be back. They have a team full of freshmen and sophomores and they play all year long. Watch for them again next year. Bobbie and Donny Awa are coaching Gods to youth and high school basketball in south Kona. Coffee land kids.

    BIK

  226. Kekoa (iPhone) February 20, 2010 12:25 am

Good fun sitting with the small Tsaiko contingent at the Les. Betty, BG, Ralph, Pomai, and SteveM was the top of our batting order. We also had our special team members in other sections, like Kazz, D-1 and Juliet.

First person I ran into on the 1st floor mezzanine was coach Mack. After giving him a big bear hug, I made sure he knew that I had a small band of Tsaiko’s in tow!

Pretty impressive crowd considering the draw at the SSC. The BaseBows had ’em on da ropes after K-Mac’s Grand Salami. Gotta teach them how to keep the pressure on, deliver the death blow quickly, quietly and with malice aforethought.

Thanks Pomai, but I can’t make the start time tomorrow. Really…never mind that d1島 guessed how I feel about direct sun at sporting events where I am wearing more clothes than my speedos. 😐

Anyway, Slugger will take up less space (since Kekoa and I took up 3.5 seats). 😆

    http://www.footballscoop.com/?cat=24

And that’s the way it should be.

some months ago posted here there appeared to be hidden friction on the coaching staff. the loose lips guy gotta make like Tiger Woods, apologize to the rest of the staff for running off his mouth. Imma guessin who da idiot is. insecure x/#f>k+! because he no call da shots. wat a dum@$$ da idiot only hurting us. us. us. 👿

  237. bighilofan2 February 20, 2010 3:57 am

sorry fo my gramma, shudda said dum@$$es. plus da idiot at da odda paypah. fo sure one gotta go. i look at da problem as a triumvirate kinda problem. thats the vibe that group gave me. they stuck togedda like crappola and flies, supporting each odda. but this pre announcement announcement, only one reason fo do that, and dat was to make Mack look bad. makes our program look bad. like we got a bunch of high school coaches running things. or should i say, use to be running things.

  238. bighilofan2 February 20, 2010 3:59 am

Mack should post for 3 positions, and make em all apply. so he can get to da bottom, clean da barrel, and make us a great program. I dunno about the Tuoti guy, but the 5 am everyday guy, alla time guy, Aranda, he is a workaholic and he get the mo.

  239. bighilofan2 February 20, 2010 4:09 am

i agree with the comments in the odda paypah. nice guys the Lee brothers, but if Aranda, Tuioti and Lumpkin never talk to the paypah, and we know Mack neva tell, that leaves a small group of suspects fo da big mouth awards

i could smell this all last season long. and we neva have da proof, till now.

    FOR SHAMEFULLL.

the sooner we fix dis problem, the sooner we can focus on USC full on!

  240. bighilofan2 February 20, 2010 4:18 am

everybody get dare plusses and minuses. da big mouth award, on national news wires, plus da odda guy who like make like ST, dis is gonna rile me up for anudda month.

  241. Garret February 20, 2010 5:27 am

Garret: Comparing UH to the University of California System is not fair nor realistic. The overall population base in California is what? 30 times larger? Furthermore, unlike here, the public school systems in California are not funded by the state but at the local level.

    WassupDoc,

My post was *not* comparing the UC system to UH–I agree that would have been an unfair comparison. I was specifically pointing out how UC-Berkeley’s Athletic Department runs a $6 million deficit without their University administration getting upset–they aren’t telling them to run the Athletic Department as a business or holding hearings on the deficit.

The link I posted also pointed out that UC-Berkeley is being squeezed with their budget for the entire University but they are still supporting their football program and approved $320 million to upgrade their football stadium. NOT the entire UC system, just UC-Berkeley. Cal clearly shows that they will support athletics…and they know that upgrading the football stadium will actually generate a significant amount of new money (more seats, luxury boxes and/or premium seating sections) that can more than pay off their investment in the stadium.

BSU is finding that their investment in their stadium (using their BCS bowl money and some other money) is paying off for them. Texas found that their investment in facilities resulted in HUGE increases in revenue for their athletic department. Cal is just following their example on this.

  243. Bulla February 20, 2010 6:12 am

congrats to the Lunas, but a congrats are in order for all the outside island teams who came to play….. and boy did they come ready to play!!!

Lunas earned respect for every team that does not fall under the title of OIA/ILH and i applaud that. when you calculate the costs, the travel time and the physical and emotional stress a young lady goes through to come to Oahu to play in the state championship, you get a better appreciation for their accomplishment.

well done girls…. now hit the books just as hard and get ready for the next level……IMUA

  244. Pomai February 20, 2010 6:33 am

    Still got three tickets left……….

  245. bighilofan2 February 20, 2010 6:39 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

have a nice day. hi ho.

  246. Pomai February 20, 2010 7:05 am

One thing I noticed at yesterdays game is the concession prices aren’t that bad, with a ticket price of 8.00 an another 7.00 for eats, you can have a nice outing for around 15 bucks. Sure not like the rust bucket…..which is more in line with the airport.

  247. d1島 February 20, 2010 7:21 am
