Graduation Day — Fall 2018

Back row: Associate head coach/offensive coordinator Brian Smith, linebacker Jahlani Tavai, wideout Devan Stubblefield, nickelback Cameron Hayes, defensive end Tevarua Eldridge, linebacker Rashaan Falemalu, center Kaiwi Chung, long snapper Shawn McCarthy, linebacker Dalton Gouveia. Front row: safety Tumua Tuinei, slotback Dakota Torres, running back Genta Ito. / Photo by Stephen Tsai

Yep, they did it.

After years of balancing football and school — and a budding stand-up comedy career (Tumua Tuinei) — the UH Alumni Association today added some new members.

Congratulations, celebrate responsibly and get good jobs to keep funding my future Social Security income.

Kurt Gouveia and Dalton Gouveia. The elder Gouveia, as we all know, is the rare player to win championships in high school, college and NFL. Dalton is moving back to North Carolina.
Slotback Dakota Torres and his parents.
Dakota Torres receives a lei and hug from Joyce Lau, who is retiring from Na Koa
Jahlani Tavai
Nickelback Cameron Hayes earned his degree in seven semesters. He’ll be back for another season … and pursuit of a master’s degree

congratulations to the football players and all the others who played for UH over the years — well deserved!!

most student only study and many have great difficulty passing

my one wish is to see Genta carry the ball just once and maybe more next week — would not hurt at all!!!!

and, my pal Joycie is retiring — NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! — she was a sweet heart — now who can I harass at Na Koa?

    I don’t remember Dwayne Dexter.

  10. Sangamon Keith December 15, 2018 4:10 pm

Stephen … Dwayne Dexter was a 6-6, 255 pound o-lineman from Wyoming. I know he was a freshman at UH in 1984 … don’t think he made it to the field. Not sure beyond that.

    APR, anybody?

Are “we” good? (Alumni, booster who regularly gives token amounts and decidedly non-athlete.)

Problem spots for any of the men’s and women’s programs?

We hope that more of you can join next year’s road games; and our tailgates; especially our GRAND tailgate at UNLV headed by our super organizer Fuchsia Yamashiro; who has attended 40+ UH road games over the past 10 years.

Also come meet Wayne Coito; who currently has the record of attending 44 consecutive UH home and road games combined–can anyone beat that?

    Still living with the cousin?

  22. cappie the dog December 15, 2018 11:33 pm

    mr. a house-

    Different era.

I imagine that less players would put team ahead of themselves and stick around for the duration of his eligibility and never get on the field.

    Injury-plagued?

  23. Akamai Okole December 16, 2018 4:47 am

Congratulations Rainbow Warrior Graduates … #2 … “A House” … totally agree about Genta Ito …

  27. A-House December 16, 2018 6:05 am

    #21:

best I know, he was not injured — he stood out on the sideline because of his height — holding his helmet and rocking back and forth

we all acknowledge “winning” is important, but would it hurt the team to allow a senior who has practiced for 4 years never to play one (1) down – this speaks to the “human” side of any coach

no difference than a player on a national championship team to never play a down, but will receive and, maybe, wear that ring? to say to friends I was on that championship team?

  28. A-House December 16, 2018 6:15 am

to the football coaches — appears better athletes are being recruited — significant part of future success — does UH have any left over players from the prior coaching staff?

let’s see — this is Rolo’s 3rd year at the helm — 2 years out all players who were recruited for the R ‘n S scheme

yet, as I watched 4 of yesterday bowl games, it appeared that every team lined up in the 4 wide-out positions multiple times and the “key” was protecting the QB

amazing how many sacks the App State DL had against Mid Tennessee — it must have been over 10 for the entire game — they had 4 in the 3rd qtr alone — most of the 4th qtr, they rushed only 3 DL and still recorded sacks — Mid-Tenn QB took a lickin!!!

  29. cappie the dog December 16, 2018 7:29 am

Congratulations to all student-athletes and students(in particular, my major) of the 2018 graduating class.

The economy is booming but I think you have to leave the islands.

Get a job now because analysts predict an oncoming recession.

    27.

Georgia Southern’s kicker looks like the best kicker in college football. GS had one more down, I thought: “Why not run one more play and shorten the distance by a couple of yards? They have a record-breaking five turnovers, so utilizing third down would be a relatively low-risk decision.

But no, the coaching staff saw no difference between 41 and 38 yards, and they were right.

Everybody, and I, have a right to criticize coaching, but…no, I changed my mind in the formulation of my next thought. Sometimes coaches do things that make no sense. But sometimes the coach is right.

Starting Cole McDonald against San Diego State and saving Cordeiro’s redshirt year was smart. The coaching staff did not cave into the court of public opinion.

At least the game is on ESPN. Still probably go to the bar but at least get choice. the bars are too noisy to hear Miano and Kekaula. Gotta listen to Bobby Curran on radio (which is irritatingly ahead of actual broadcast) if we do to the waterhole. If Cole doesn’t play well still got the Super Stock Chevy

  31. winning December 16, 2018 2:45 pm

Sorry, with ESPN no more Miano and Kekaula. then Bobby Curran much better altho ahead at least 5-8 seconds.

  32. Boolakanaka December 16, 2018 2:55 pm

Congrats, Gents! It’s all bout the paper….
