Unfortunately cp seems to have their own strategy of serving Granato every time.

Service errors are killing momentum, making it difficult for UH to string points together.

Poly is serving much better than at the beginning of the match. UH is serving much worse.

How things have changed. After set 2, UH was hitting more than 150 pts. better than Poly…now only 20 pts. And UH has more hitting errors than Poly.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but did I see numerous mishandled balls from Cal Poly that was not called? I swear I saw at least 3 or 4 mishandles not called. not excusing Hawaii’s playing but still, you have to factor in those mishandled balls that weren’t called.

45. You are correct…the refs are not calling a lot on cal poly…seems to be very inconsistent. That and T. Van-Winden has foot faulted many times that were not called. We need 4 line judges.

Those mistakes by Burns and Koelsh you just cant do that and win against a top 30 team

And it wasn’t that Poly is so much better. UH didn’t have enough OH and RS production. Maglio not set much during the later stages of the match.

Now they have to run the table basically and hope cp has a hiccup as well.

What a heartbreak after the polished look of first two. Looked like there were a couple chances to lock it up in the fourth.

I won’t acknowledge Cal Poly what so ever because I just don’t care to and I’m not high on how good they are. I have seen teams just as good…the only thing they were able to do was make Hawai‘i mess up constantly.

What I will say is, Hawai‘i wth! 2 sets up and you guys disappeared after that. Iosia, omg girl what’s up with never setting Emily when she was in? like to me she is your key x-factor, and constantly ignoring her hurt. the passing was decent enough most times to set her, but she always choose different players who either hit out or straight into the block. mistakes all around hurt this team tonight.

Lisa you must be smiling ear to ear….! i don’t like her talking when Poly comes to town because she clearly is biased. sure they are family to her, but still it’s annoying to me.

I will acknowledge Poly, they played a great last three sets. The match is a microcosm of the season for UH–highly inconsistent play. For UH to compete against the top 30, a lot of players need to play well. Didn’t happen tonite.

Wahine really need to dig deep and go undefeated the rest of the regular season. UH can not lose it’s prestige of being a tournament team year in year out and top 25 program it will hurt recruiting even more because lets face it recruiting has been really slow with signing day a month away, while other programs are already done with 2020 recruiting classes and te wahine do not have a legacy top 10 recruit wanting to transfer in like cp did.

65. UH is not a top 40 team right now. And barring a major Poly misstep, UH won’t be in the tournament. UH is not in control of its destiny, it needs major help from Poly (lose another match, lose more sets, and give up more points, than UH for the remaining matches). Recruiting is a big black hole right now. As discussed over the summer, the lack of experience recruiting was a major identified risk with Robyn’s hiring. Can’t just wait for Elena Ogilvie to commit. Need other talent before fall 2020. Next year looks like more rebuilding, but the following year could be a program disaster because of the failure to re-load this year and next.

#46 My thought exactly. T. Van WInden hitting reminded my of Nikki Taylor also. She is that good. She was great in the back too. Great match, unfortunately our passing fell apart after the second set. Really like the way Coach Robyn subs looking for a lift. Reminds me of Charlie Wade.

68. Maglio wasn’t set a lot in the later stages of the match. One would think she was in the brake room.

Maglio was great blocking but UH needed her to be stellar offensively also and it just didn’t happen.
Koeslch and castillo struggled again, it’s time to rethink Koelsch at opposite, her hitting percentage is just not high enough.. Hmm I wonder if they would have pulled this out with Maglio at opposite and Burns/Howling in the middle..

OK now that I thought about it. I hope Coach Robyn takes a risk and puts Maglio at opposite and playing all the way around from here on out. What do we have to lose?
I think it’s the wahine’s best shot at beating Cal Poly at Cal Poly.
Koelsch hitting under .200 is just not going to get it done. I think Burns and Howling are both decent in the middle with Sky off the bench in case one of them is off. Cal Poly has shown you don’t really need a middle attack. Burns completely outplayed Neiman. But they had two outlet pins who could bail them out and score points and the wahine just had one since Castillo and Koelsch were off again.

Too much of a risk to move Maglio at this point. She hasn’t shown she can terminate well on the outside or from the back, including tonight, and it is wishful thinking to assume she will. I recall everyone being on Ross’ bandwagon until she showed her limitations. Funny I don’t see many calling for her to be a bigger contributor.

Maglio is no Mitchem, who had real power, a higher contact point, and was a stronger/better athlete. And the middle will suffer, even blocking-wise, with Maglio on the outside. Maglio had some great one-on-one blocks that I don’t see any other middle making. And none of them have her powerful arm–UH would lose more kills from the middle than Maglio would get on the outside. Whereas moving Mitchem outside was a net positive, moving Maglio would be a net negative.

Koelsch and Castillo are having issues because they haven’t been playing the outside positions for very long–it is unrealistic to expect them to be consistently good; they weren’t even top 30 recruits (and yet they have displaced Ross & Sibley). Moving Maglio outside would yield similar results.

UH can beat Poly…they just need to focus, not make ridiculous mistakes, serve/pass better and have a high level of intensity for 3 sets, not 2. Moving Maglio would introduce additional issues–getting used to a new position, shoring up the middle with a RS sophomore and two freshmen, etc.. UH has enough issues as it is, and moving Maglio won’t solve them.

What do you have to lose? More matches, more sets, more points.

Current estimated RPI rank for UH is now 51, including tonight’s match. Good loss (???), I suppose. Loss partly offset by playing a 15-2 team. Poly RPI rank at 26.

Current #25 Colorado lost already this weekend and visits Washington on Sunday (probable loss). This makes it likely that Poly will enter the top 25 on Monday for the first time since October 6, 2008 (a period of 9 years, almost to the day). That year, UH lost in the regional final to Stanford. The next year, UH was in the final four, the last time UH made it that far (led by a super sophomore, Kanani Danielson).

78. I’ve seen enough to know she won’t terminate like you think she can. It’s 20 days until Poly part 2, and we’re supposed to believe Maglio is going to make a successful transition in a new position by then? And the team’s serving will improve? And the passing? Truly wishful thinking going on here and sounds desperate. And no, UH’s situation is not desperate.

(I agree with 68 to 75 & 78) forgive me for sounding off (have been a huge fan / and BOZO since Klum days). Biggest failure last night was coaching staff not recognizing and adjusting to Poly after the break! Wahine still going through ups/downs but mistakes causing serious problems (also , defense not adjusting to schemes)! Serve/receive a problem (Granato , Castillo , Anderson and Baby G).Coach Robyn asked “what can you do”—Robyn—COACH! Loss of players like Lipscomb , Misraje , Light and Smith VERY COSTLY to Wahine future. Still think Castillo would be better at OPP (better presence as block) and should give Sibley ang Mags shot at OH. Also , would favor Ross as backrow for Castillo and Granato. Sophia , Sky and Burns are works in progress , but still need playing time , to develop. Season not over yet–come on ladies–keep the faith (Maafala) GO BOWS

What bugs me is the comparison of Maglio to Mitchem. It’s apples and oranges. They have different strengths as athletes.

Mitchem is an exceptional athlete whom I admire a lot, but from a strictly athletic standpoint, Maglio is the better athlete. Her speed, agility, fitness, lateral movement, kinesthetic awareness, and vision are exceptional. Annie has fantastic power on her swing and her jump and moves well for her size as well. She has had (even up to this point), several years of development ahead of Maglio. Maglio now touches 10’6″ – 10’7″. She was a thin, untrained volleyball player when she joined the program and has made a remarkable improvement in a short amount of time. She was introduced to volleyball her sophomore year in high school and joined a club team with the twins (from UCLA who had been playing volleyball for years). In her first season was an All-Canadian at the Canadian Nationals (two years in a row if I not mistaken). She became a beach All-American in her first year of competition (second year of playing). When people say her future is super bright in the sport, it is because she is a phenomenal athlete and has unlimited potential.

Maglio has only ever played middle hitter/blocker. She has been given increased responsibility and handled it well. She has only had a handful of opportunities on the outside or back row thus far. Annie played six rotations in JuCo and had some opportunities on the left side at UH before she had the finger injury. It’s a completely different scenario asking her to go all around (or even outside) then the other players, including Annie, who have had a lot of experience.

The question is not whether Maglio can be as good as an outside hitter as Mitchem. The question is can the team benefit from giving her increased playing time (and six rotations)? I believe she can. She can serve and play back row defense as good as the players that are currently playing that rotation while has been on the bench.

Is her hitting not yet there from the back row? In a game situation, she has only been given literally a handful of opportunities. In the game last night she was given a couple of chances with sets that were completely off. Given the same set, Granato too (who is fantastic at bettering most balls) would be reaching forward for them as well and would not get a good swing on the ball.

In many matches, Maglio sits for long stretches while the team struggles to side out. She has been given very little opportunity in the back and then is asked to come in when the team is already down and struggling in a desperate attempt to find offense. She has asked and exceeded much of what the coaching staff has asked her to do, and continues to step up and elevate her game. I believe she would benefit from staying warm and not getting out of rhythm with the setter. If given a fair opportunity (much like Castillo and Koelsch have been given in their positions), I believe she will continue to elevate her game.

I love KK, but she has been given ample opportunity at OPP and her stats to date are not equating to enough offense for the team. She is a great player off the bench to elevate the team and she has blocking strength. She has done remarkably in what she has been asked to do thus far, but she has struggled to be a terminator. Maglio has all the ability to be a six-rotation player given fair opportunity and on many teams, she would be. Now maybe the time (as we are not even yet through the first half of conference play) to get the reps and see if she can add more options. She doesn’t have to be perfect back there (yet) and she needs more reps to be effective. I don’t think she has to play every rotation back there (though it would help), but she needs to stay active in the game longer rather than sit for long stretches. She would still play the middle, but move around and take swings from the right, left and back row. I think Granato, as good as she is, needs another option on that one rotation so that she isn’t pressured and doesn’t have to take as many swings. I am concerned if she continues taking so many heavy swings that she may get injured. Without her, the team could lose to lesser teams and have zero chance of making the tournament.

I was never high on Ross in the back row, but she is extremely athletic and providing some defense and one more potential option. She isn’t perfect back there either but has been seeing improvement with the reps she is getting. She is a good back row player for Castilo. I’d take Koelsch off for at least a few rotations and let Maglio serve and go through the back row several times in a game. She will get there and the connection with the setter will also improve. Without that extra bit of offense, the team could be sunk. Who else on the team has the potential to step up and be the difference maker? If she can make improvement by the next time they face Poly, the team hopefully won’t go on runs, then give up long runs to the other team.

Volleyball is a momentum game and if the team is steady throughout, they hopefully won’t get lulls and start getting down and making errors. It can take pressure off Granato as well. When someone says, what do we have to lose (or something to that effect)? I concur. Lose the Big West? Have no potential off-season? We are already in danger of that. I can’t see another player on the team with the best chance of stepping up and providing that back row offense (while being steady enough on defense). To be clear, I am not saying give her a completely “new position” such as OPP or OH and take her out of the middle permanently, she would still be a middle playing six rotations. In other words, she would still be on the floor when normally she is sitting on the bench. My lowly opinion of course.

82. Just because a player is unproven doesn’t mean they didn’t have potential to help the team. Misraje, Lipscomb, Smith, and Light all could have contributed. Immediately maybe not (with the exception of Smith), but they had potential. Many people would have said the same thing about Maglio back in the day. We have already see the potential Howling and Williams may bring in the future. The loss is that they need to be replaced with potentially as good or better recruits.

Hopefully, Misraje knee heels well for beach and we will see what she can do and I hope Lipscomb gets on a decent team next year and eventually shows her potential.

87. Obviously, most of these players have the potential to contribute, that’s why they were recruited or allowed to walk on in the first place. I am responding to the dramatic “VERY COSTLY” loss of these UNPROVEN players. And again, Misraje was not a standout in high school and is a walk on despite her height. The other players you mentioned – Maglio, Howling and Williams all came in as recruited players with high school accolades.

Come on people. Did you see the replay or the original game? I blame Ryan Kalei Tsuji. During the break Scott asked Lisa and Ryan what does the wahine have to do to finish up? Lisa said keep doing what they are doing. Ryan said let’s finish it up in 3 and go home. Scott said that is the kiss of death and guess what? It was. Hahaha

90. The incoming recruits are not of the quality of the players they are replacing. UH is going to field smaller (i.e., shorter) and less dominant teams in the next 2 years unless a miracle recruit or two commits. And I’m not holding my breath for that to happen until 2020, if at all.

Interesting, from VT, RPI futures has UH around 30th in RPI rank if they run the table, and around 48th if they lose to Poly and Irvine. UH in the 30s with only one more loss, to either Poly or Irvine. So more hope here than I thought, if these futures are accurate.

After last night’s loss to Cal Poly, does Hawaii make the 2017 NCAA tournament or the 2017 National Invitational Volleyball Championship?

Per VolleyballMag.com, the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (Nov. 26-Dec. 12, 2017) will be an annual tournament involving 64 of the nation’s top women’s Division I Volleyball teams. All games, including the semifinals and championship, are hosted by participating schools. Every round is single elimination. The event offers 32 automatic berths, one to each established conference, and 32 at-large berths. The NIVC field and bracket is announced late on the evening of the NCAA Tournament selections. The NIVC is committed to offering deserved opportunities to women’s volleyball programs; the event offers teams an opportunity to get more practices in, to experience playoff-atmosphere games, to play in front of passionate fans and to use their NIVC success and experience as a springboard to the next season.

My concern about recruiting relates to the future not the past. The current roster will lose many of its senior aces in the next two years, and there are no aces filling up the pipeline. I am worried about what the program looks like in 3 or 4 years.

104. NIVC is produced by Triple Crown Sports, and while I can’t find anything about entry fees/costs/etc. for the volleyball tourney, TCS also produces the WNIT for basketball, and I found this bit of cost data for that tournament:

“Everyone wants home games, and the WNIT makes hosting affordable for all teams. Teams can host in the first round for a guarantee of $6,500 a game. They can host in the second round for $7,500 a game.

The WNIT helps offset those costs and assumes all risk for high-cost travel. Teams pay no more than $12,000 combined for all of their road games in the Postseason WNIT. This allows teams to budget for their postseason play and doesn’t penalize them for winning.”

For the NCAA tournament,
“Transportation expenses and per diem will be provided for the official travel party of 22. Please refer to the NCAA Travel policies for all information regarding transportation and per diem expenses. Travel policies can be found online at http://www.NCAA.org.”

So I anticipate it will be more costly to attend NIVC vs. NCAA

Regarding recruiting, we need to get the best players available for all positions. For example, signing Elena Oglive would be a great get. Still we need the Emily Hartong and Nikki Taylor impact type players to make a run at the highest levels, specify playing on the court at the same time. Have you seem Texas play yet, lots of big guns all on the court at the same time. Go Wahine, here is for the out years…

Playing Maglio six rotations needed to happen on day one. She would have flourished. But she would have taken a little time to get comfortable. There is no doubt she could do it.

I strongly disagree about CP looking like a top 10 team, they had no middle attack and very weak blocking
Unfortunately the wahine had too many service and miscommunication errors in sets 3/4 and let the younger sister take over in the last two sets so they let a very winnable match get away.

Until we recruit a Kim Willoughby, Tree Wiiliams, and Robyn Ah Mow will see ever see that Banner hanging!! Nobody I mean nobody could hit the ball like Tree and Kim…They were hybrid athletes who could move and jump. Robyn flew across the floor making the bad passers look like All Americans….Emily Hartong was our best hitter who played without missing a match (never injured) in a while and Kanoe Kamanao IMO was the best since Robyn Ah Mow….We have good volleyball players today but not great athletes! I take the Athlete over the Volleyball Player

111. It’s one thing for Maglio to play six rotations as a middle to add another back row attack option, it’s another thing when some fans are calling for her to move to the right and play six rotations.

IMO sMith hasn’t looked that great at Cal… I think we can find a better libero… Her plat form is awkward… been watching a lot of volleyball just not Wahine vball, thanks spectrum… I’m not missing much from this Wahine team..
