T minus 11, hoping our players are on fire tonight. Nice pregame segment on Faith Ma’afala.

  2. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 7:02 pm

    1. saw them shooting it Wednesday. didn’t see it tonight
Williams still not cleared to play. practice related.
Same lineup as last night. Howling, Koelsch, Granato, Iosia, Kahakai, Greeley, Maglio.

  3. warriorwahine October 7, 2017 7:08 pm

the first prime number strikes first and again!

  4. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 7:12 pm

UH up 8-3. TO CP. Maglio really came to play.

  5. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 7:24 pm

    Keep serving torrey van winden.
    Love the strategy.

  6. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 7:34 pm

    sorry lost the internet.
Hawaii 5-0 in blocks, Maglio in on 4.
UH wins 25-16. only the second set that the Mustangs have dropped in conference play.

  7. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 7:42 pm

UH 8-0 in blocks. it’s 8-4. TO Mustangs. How about that set from Burns

  8. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 7:45 pm

Burns does more than the freshmen on the court.

  9. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 7:47 pm

couple of low sets and some miscommunication and Mustangs pull to 10-8. TO UH

  10. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 7:49 pm

Wow how does that ball drop there
Getting a little sloppy ,come on wahine.

  11. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 7:57 pm

Casey needs to get going , would love Mckenna Ross to serve.

  12. Brandon October 7, 2017 7:58 pm

Someone on cal polys team is screaming like a banshee lol.

  13. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 7:59 pm

Granato with the ace UH up 21-19. To Cal Poly.

  14. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 8:04 pm

    Castillo ends it 25-22.

  15. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 8:07 pm

Casey was clutch at the end of set two, came through.

  16. T103 October 7, 2017 8:09 pm

#12 I KNOW!! when UH serves them, u can totally hear whoever it is that is yelling on Cal Poly’s side, it’s kinda irritating. SOOO. my friend is on the sideline and she was saying #11 on Cal Poly, younger sister of the Van Winden sisters has a temper… At one point when one of there team mates shanked a UH serve, she said out loud, OMG, Coach, Sub! And it was loud enough for my friend to hear, and she’s sidelines but not like on the court…. Shesh…. So shame. That is Lisa’s Ma’a’s twin sisters daughter.. her niece. So shame….

  17. Maverick October 7, 2017 8:10 pm

Poly beat #23 Wichita State after being down 2-0, so they know how to comeback against a very good team. UH has to seal the coffin in set 3.

  18. Maverick October 7, 2017 8:12 pm

    16. So shame? Really? Let her be a banshee. Not like it is working.

  19. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 8:14 pm

Keep serving at Torrey van winden!

  20. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 8:18 pm

She is loud but I wouldn’t call it a temper.
Cal Poly up 5-1. TO UH

  21. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 8:22 pm

Unfortunately cp seems to have their own strategy of serving Granato every time.

  22. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 8:26 pm

Ace by Iosia pulls Hawaii to 13=8. TO Mustangs

  23. T103 October 7, 2017 8:26 pm

Not shame that they yelling like screaming banshee, shame that she actually said that on the court, like not even in a time out, out loud, in front of her team mate who shanked the ball.

  24. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 8:31 pm

Too many long runs given up by the wahine tonight.

  25. Maverick October 7, 2017 8:31 pm

Service errors are killing momentum, making it difficult for UH to string points together.

  26. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 8:34 pm

Ma’afala still in. Cal Poly up 21-13. TO UH

  27. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 8:34 pm

Wahine should have shut the door this set instead they gave cp some life.

  28. Maverick October 7, 2017 8:34 pm

This set is a goner. Just get ready for set 4.

  29. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 8:39 pm

Cal Poly takes Set 3 25-15.

  30. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 8:46 pm

Deja vu. A. Van Winden has Cal Poly up 6-1. TO UH

  31. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 8:47 pm

Another long run by cp, not good.

  32. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 8:49 pm

i just dont understand why Casey serves.

  33. Maverick October 7, 2017 8:53 pm

Poly is serving much better than at the beginning of the match. UH is serving much worse.

  34. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 8:56 pm

Granato out of the back ro. Mustangs still lead 13-10 but call a TO

  35. Maverick October 7, 2017 8:57 pm

How things have changed. After set 2, UH was hitting more than 150 pts. better than Poly…now only 20 pts. And UH has more hitting errors than Poly.

  36. Maverick October 7, 2017 9:03 pm

Castillo is really struggling tonight. If UH wins the match, Maglio is my player of the match. Granato is bombing well, but Maglio’s defense is the difference maker.

  37. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 9:04 pm

Granato hits long. it’s 22-16. TO UH

  38. Maverick October 7, 2017 9:05 pm

This set is a goner. On to set 5.

  39. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 9:05 pm

Wahine just making too many silly errors that cp is not right now.

  40. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 9:05 pm

We need maglio on the court at all times but oh well.

  41. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 9:08 pm

UH closes to 22-20. TO Cal Poly

  42. Maverick October 7, 2017 9:11 pm

Maglio was in the rotation when Poly took a 7-1 lead. Other players need to show up. Castillo and Koelsch are having off nights. Maglio even having an off night offensively.

  43. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 9:12 pm

Adlee Van Winder with the kill. it’s 25-22. On to Set 5

  44. Maverick October 7, 2017 9:15 pm

To state the obvious, a slow UH start will give Poly with huge comeback victory. An even start or lead in the first 8 points for UH, and they will have a big advantage. UH outplayed Poly after 7-1 in set 4.

  45. Ashley October 7, 2017 9:16 pm

Correct me if I’m wrong, but did I see numerous mishandled balls from Cal Poly that was not called? I swear I saw at least 3 or 4 mishandles not called. not excusing Hawaii’s playing but still, you have to factor in those mishandled balls that weren’t called.

  46. Maverick October 7, 2017 9:21 pm

Torrey Van Winden reminds me of Nikki Taylor.

  47. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 9:23 pm

Interesting keeping Maglio in the back room
Cal Poly up 6-4. TO UH

  48. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 9:24 pm

Wahine just cant make mistakes like those last two they are fighting for ncaa tournament berth..

  49. Don October 7, 2017 9:25 pm

    45. You are correct…the refs are not calling a lot on cal poly…seems to be very inconsistent. That and T. Van-Winden has foot faulted many times that were not called. We need 4 line judges.

  50. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 9:27 pm

Cal poly up 9-5. TO UH

  51. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 9:28 pm

Those mistakes by Burns and Koelsh you just cant do that and win against a top 30 team
    Too much second guessing.

  52. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 9:33 pm

Just disappointing they let cp back in and get a groove, just can’t do that.
Defense after set two was a step slow and a lot of careless errors hurt the wahine.

  53. Maverick October 7, 2017 9:35 pm

Terrible loss. UH’s tourney hopes take a dive tonight. A big dive.
And it wasn’t that Poly is so much better. UH didn’t have enough OH and RS production. Maglio not set much during the later stages of the match.

  54. Cindy Luis October 7, 2017 9:35 pm

    Cal Poly wins 15-9

  55. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 9:36 pm

Now they have to run the table basically and hope cp has a hiccup as well.
Ugh just not a goodnight to be a uh fan.

  56. vballer9988 October 7, 2017 9:39 pm

robyn is just not a good coach…this game and 3-4 other games were definitely winnable with the current players…

  57. Maverick October 7, 2017 9:39 pm

Expect a program low RPI ranking next week, maybe in the 60s (at about #50 right now).

Stunning statistic: UH outblocks Poly 16 to 5. And still loses.

  58. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 9:42 pm

Cp is not a good blocking team and they wont get very far because of that.
UH tonight kicked itself in the foot with miscommucication errors and just slow reactions to some second balls(ahem casey)

  59. greenthumb October 7, 2017 9:43 pm

What a heartbreak after the polished look of first two. Looked like there were a couple chances to lock it up in the fourth.

  60. Maverick October 7, 2017 9:45 pm

Here is the tiebreaker formula for the AQ:

In the event two teams tie for first place in the final standings, the following tie-breaking formula shall be used to determine the automatic qualifier:
    1. The winner of the two-match series between the tied teams shall be declared the automatic qualifier.
    2. If still tied, the team with the best record in conference matches against common opponents beginning at the top of the standings and working down the standings until the tie is broken shall be declared the automatic qualifier. Ties among teams at the top of the standings should be broken first to establish a ranked order.
    3. If still tied, the team with the best total win/loss set record in conference matches against all conference opponents, including the matches between the tied teams, shall be declared the automatic qualifier.
    4. If still tied, the team with the best win/loss set record against common conference opponents, excluding the team with which it is tied, beginning at the top of the standings and working down until the tie is broken shall be declared the automatic qualifier. Ties at the top of the standings should be broken first to establish a ranked order.
    5. If still tied, the team with the highest point ratio in all conference matches shall be declared the automatic qualifier.

  61. Ashley October 7, 2017 9:48 pm

I won’t acknowledge Cal Poly what so ever because I just don’t care to and I’m not high on how good they are. I have seen teams just as good…the only thing they were able to do was make Hawai‘i mess up constantly.

What I will say is, Hawai‘i wth! 2 sets up and you guys disappeared after that. Iosia, omg girl what’s up with never setting Emily when she was in? like to me she is your key x-factor, and constantly ignoring her hurt. the passing was decent enough most times to set her, but she always choose different players who either hit out or straight into the block. mistakes all around hurt this team tonight.

Lisa you must be smiling ear to ear….! i don’t like her talking when Poly comes to town because she clearly is biased. sure they are family to her, but still it’s annoying to me.

  62. Maverick October 7, 2017 9:49 pm

Right now, assuming UH runs the table and ties for best record with Poly, we go to tiebreaker #3, and at the moment, Poly has lost 3 sets versus 6 for UH.

BTW, Ryan Tsuji needs to stop telling people about the tiebreaker (i.e., a win by UH at Poly in less than 5 sets and UH vaults ahead of Poly). He is so wrong with what he just said. Please stop, it is so embarrassing to watch.

  63. Maverick October 7, 2017 9:52 pm

I will acknowledge Poly, they played a great last three sets. The match is a microcosm of the season for UH–highly inconsistent play. For UH to compete against the top 30, a lot of players need to play well. Didn’t happen tonite.

  64. Maverick October 7, 2017 9:55 pm

I agree with WF that UH needs to run the table and Poly has to lose one more match against a non-UH BW team. Given this team’s inconsistency, I can’t see how UH will win tiebreaker #3 (or even match Poly’s record), or even tiebreakers 4 or 5.

  65. Warriorfan October 7, 2017 9:56 pm

Wahine really need to dig deep and go undefeated the rest of the regular season. UH can not lose it’s prestige of being a tournament team year in year out and top 25 program it will hurt recruiting even more because lets face it recruiting has been really slow with signing day a month away, while other programs are already done with 2020 recruiting classes and te wahine do not have a legacy top 10 recruit wanting to transfer in like cp did.

  66. Poly Flava October 7, 2017 10:01 pm

Theres seems to be a disconnect with Iosia this year, I see Iosia transferring to LB or even Cal Poly next year.

  67. Maverick October 7, 2017 10:10 pm

    65. UH is not a top 40 team right now. And barring a major Poly misstep, UH won’t be in the tournament. UH is not in control of its destiny, it needs major help from Poly (lose another match, lose more sets, and give up more points, than UH for the remaining matches). Recruiting is a big black hole right now. As discussed over the summer, the lack of experience recruiting was a major identified risk with Robyn’s hiring. Can’t just wait for Elena Ogilvie to commit. Need other talent before fall 2020. Next year looks like more rebuilding, but the following year could be a program disaster because of the failure to re-load this year and next.

  68. Firefly October 7, 2017 10:15 pm

Glad that Poly finally got the monkey off their backs, once they settled down and played their game there was no stopping them esp TVW!! BYE Iosia see u wen u get back home.

  69. rabbit ears October 7, 2017 10:21 pm

#46 My thought exactly. T. Van WInden hitting reminded my of Nikki Taylor also. She is that good. She was great in the back too. Great match, unfortunately our passing fell apart after the second set. Really like the way Coach Robyn subs looking for a lift. Reminds me of Charlie Wade.

  70. FitTrainer October 7, 2017 10:49 pm

Cindy did you mean “interesting keeping Maglio in the back row”? I hope she wasn’t kept in the “backeoom”.

Inwould have liked to see her in the back room much sooner. I really think with more time back there she could change the dynamics having her as backrow attack option. She is normally a consistent server and she can play defence back there! I like how the VW girls play six rotations. Maglio has that capability given some time and experience back there.

One of the biggest problem has been the second rotation that has trouble siding out. Yes Mags was in on one of those last runs but that was an anomaly and everything was going south by then. Normally when she comes in she gives a lift. But it seemed like she hadn’t got a set in a long time and lost her rhythm.

Burns was affective tonight as I knew she can be. Would like to see her play at LB. they have a front line With a couple of 6’4″ players on some rotations.

Overall thought block did their job tonight…16 team blocks is decent.

Cindy can update on if Granato is feeling okay? Heard her shoulder may be bothering her and/ or a cold or flu.

Hoping the team has a lot of fight left in them left to run the table.

  71. Maverick October 7, 2017 11:02 pm

    68. Maglio wasn’t set a lot in the later stages of the match. One would think she was in the brake room.

  72. Bleachercoach October 7, 2017 11:08 pm

Didn’t read everyone’s comments so I hope this is not repetitive. Anyways, the way we played the 1st 2 sets was amazingly the best “TEAM” effort I saw so far this entire season. The girls were playing with FIRE coming out of their eyes! Then…..Cal Poly just capitalized on every time Maglio was in the sidelines like 8 points for the other team later. I still don’t know why we can leave our own All American player on the bench that long.
Emily needs to be in the game the whole match. Her energy and effectiveness carries the team. Again, she has to pass receive in Beach VB so why doesn’t she have the opportunity to stay in. I would really be quiet on this matter if we saw her going around and not be efficient. Who else is? No player is that much better in the backrow anyways. I would love to see her hit from the back. Why only let Granato and Ross hit back there when you have the Best OTT player waiting 10 minutes or so to get back into the match….I honestly say she being not on the floor HURTS our chances. She is the X Factor…We are a much team at this point than Cal Poly but even with all our errors , Emily getting cold on the bench only questions the strategy. She got to play all 6 rotations. It makes the best sense!

  73. warriorfan October 7, 2017 11:12 pm

Maglio was great blocking but UH needed her to be stellar offensively also and it just didn’t happen.
Koeslch and castillo struggled again, it’s time to rethink Koelsch at opposite, her hitting percentage is just not high enough.. Hmm I wonder if they would have pulled this out with Maglio at opposite and Burns/Howling in the middle..

  74. warriorfan October 7, 2017 11:15 pm

    70. It’s too far in the season to put Maglio at opposite unfortunately the time for that passed like 4 weeks ago, right now she still looks awkward there and if it happened a month ago she might have been comfortable playing al the way around by now.
shame cause it might have made the team better prepared for opponents like CP or the NCAA tournament.

  75. warriorfan October 7, 2017 11:33 pm

OK now that I thought about it. I hope Coach Robyn takes a risk and puts Maglio at opposite and playing all the way around from here on out. What do we have to lose?
I think it’s the wahine’s best shot at beating Cal Poly at Cal Poly.
Koelsch hitting under .200 is just not going to get it done. I think Burns and Howling are both decent in the middle with Sky off the bench in case one of them is off. Cal Poly has shown you don’t really need a middle attack. Burns completely outplayed Neiman. But they had two outlet pins who could bail them out and score points and the wahine just had one since Castillo and Koelsch were off again.

  76. Bleachercoach October 7, 2017 11:49 pm

    72. I agree it may be a little late but its rotation when Emily is not in the game like forever is when we don’t have as much offensively and defensively. I think wherever you put Maglio would be fine. She is just the most athletic bigs (anyone over 6’1″) we have. Castillo is not steady at outside IMO…I knew she had knee problems (surgery?)between her Junior and Senior High School Year. It appears that has affected how she gets on top of the ball. Don’t get me wrong! She is good, but I only can assume her knee prevents her from elevating like Mags to be as efficient. Kendra, not a prototype OH, but has overachiever more than any other expected recruited OH….By her approach to every ball you can notice her passion of giving her all. More often than not, she contributes and is steady just as much as any player out there. I thought Savannah gave up her body alot tonite and dug lights out most of the match. Granato is just “pure power”. Thought Granato played a very good game elevating her power the most I have seen.
Our passing and setting still needs tons of work after seeing it disappear after Game 2. Very Exhausting Lost!!

  77. Maverick October 8, 2017 12:26 am

Too much of a risk to move Maglio at this point. She hasn’t shown she can terminate well on the outside or from the back, including tonight, and it is wishful thinking to assume she will. I recall everyone being on Ross’ bandwagon until she showed her limitations. Funny I don’t see many calling for her to be a bigger contributor.

Maglio is no Mitchem, who had real power, a higher contact point, and was a stronger/better athlete. And the middle will suffer, even blocking-wise, with Maglio on the outside. Maglio had some great one-on-one blocks that I don’t see any other middle making. And none of them have her powerful arm–UH would lose more kills from the middle than Maglio would get on the outside. Whereas moving Mitchem outside was a net positive, moving Maglio would be a net negative.

Koelsch and Castillo are having issues because they haven’t been playing the outside positions for very long–it is unrealistic to expect them to be consistently good; they weren’t even top 30 recruits (and yet they have displaced Ross & Sibley). Moving Maglio outside would yield similar results.

UH can beat Poly…they just need to focus, not make ridiculous mistakes, serve/pass better and have a high level of intensity for 3 sets, not 2. Moving Maglio would introduce additional issues–getting used to a new position, shoring up the middle with a RS sophomore and two freshmen, etc.. UH has enough issues as it is, and moving Maglio won’t solve them.

What do you have to lose? More matches, more sets, more points.

  78. Maverick October 8, 2017 12:29 am

Btw, is Greeley now relegated to cheerleader status? I have wonderful memories of her play against Penn State two years ago. Such a shame that her career has to end like this.

  79. Maverick October 8, 2017 1:25 am

Current estimated RPI rank for UH is now 51, including tonight’s match. Good loss (???), I suppose. Loss partly offset by playing a 15-2 team. Poly RPI rank at 26.

Current #25 Colorado lost already this weekend and visits Washington on Sunday (probable loss). This makes it likely that Poly will enter the top 25 on Monday for the first time since October 6, 2008 (a period of 9 years, almost to the day). That year, UH lost in the regional final to Stanford. The next year, UH was in the final four, the last time UH made it that far (led by a super sophomore, Kanani Danielson).

  80. warriorfan October 8, 2017 2:05 am

    75. She hasn’t been given a chance to make that conclusion that she can not terminate on the pins or from the backrow though.
she’s taken very few swings from there.
her blocking would still be a big asset on the right..

  81. Maverick October 8, 2017 2:23 am

    78. I’ve seen enough to know she won’t terminate like you think she can. It’s 20 days until Poly part 2, and we’re supposed to believe Maglio is going to make a successful transition in a new position by then? And the team’s serving will improve? And the passing? Truly wishful thinking going on here and sounds desperate. And no, UH’s situation is not desperate.

  82. Hot October 8, 2017 2:42 am

    78. Have you actually seen Maglio hit the ball? She hits for a high percentage, but she doesn’t have the full, quick swing of prototype middles, and IMO, I don’t think her arm swing will cut it on the outside. Also, taking Maglio out of the MB would be a big blow to the UH block. Howling is just not ready for primetime, and Williams is raw. It’s laughable to assume those two freshmen will handle the middle like it’s no problem. Maglio can play six rotations at MB if the coaches want her to. Several years ago, Lauren Duggins played about five rotations as a middle, while the libero, Melissa Villaroman, went in for the other middle and the opposite.

  83. ignaciosaid October 8, 2017 3:18 am

(I agree with 68 to 75 & 78) forgive me for sounding off (have been a huge fan / and BOZO since Klum days). Biggest failure last night was coaching staff not recognizing and adjusting to Poly after the break! Wahine still going through ups/downs but mistakes causing serious problems (also , defense not adjusting to schemes)! Serve/receive a problem (Granato , Castillo , Anderson and Baby G).Coach Robyn asked “what can you do”—Robyn—COACH! Loss of players like Lipscomb , Misraje , Light and Smith VERY COSTLY to Wahine future. Still think Castillo would be better at OPP (better presence as block) and should give Sibley ang Mags shot at OH. Also , would favor Ross as backrow for Castillo and Granato. Sophia , Sky and Burns are works in progress , but still need playing time , to develop. Season not over yet–come on ladies–keep the faith (Maafala) GO BOWS

  84. Hot October 8, 2017 3:38 am

    81. I’m sorry, MIsraje? Are you kidding? She was a 6-2 walk-on who didn’t have great stats in high school to begin with. The only “costly” loss out of all the players you mentioned is Smith, who is better than Kahakai.

What bugs me is the comparison of Maglio to Mitchem. It’s apples and oranges. They have different strengths as athletes.

Mitchem is an exceptional athlete whom I admire a lot, but from a strictly athletic standpoint, Maglio is the better athlete. Her speed, agility, fitness, lateral movement, kinesthetic awareness, and vision are exceptional. Annie has fantastic power on her swing and her jump and moves well for her size as well. She has had (even up to this point), several years of development ahead of Maglio. Maglio now touches 10’6″ – 10’7″. She was a thin, untrained volleyball player when she joined the program and has made a remarkable improvement in a short amount of time. She was introduced to volleyball her sophomore year in high school and joined a club team with the twins (from UCLA who had been playing volleyball for years). In her first season was an All-Canadian at the Canadian Nationals (two years in a row if I not mistaken). She became a beach All-American in her first year of competition (second year of playing). When people say her future is super bright in the sport, it is because she is a phenomenal athlete and has unlimited potential.

Maglio has only ever played middle hitter/blocker. She has been given increased responsibility and handled it well. She has only had a handful of opportunities on the outside or back row thus far. Annie played six rotations in JuCo and had some opportunities on the left side at UH before she had the finger injury. It’s a completely different scenario asking her to go all around (or even outside) then the other players, including Annie, who have had a lot of experience.

The question is not whether Maglio can be as good as an outside hitter as Mitchem. The question is can the team benefit from giving her increased playing time (and six rotations)? I believe she can. She can serve and play back row defense as good as the players that are currently playing that rotation while has been on the bench.

Is her hitting not yet there from the back row? In a game situation, she has only been given literally a handful of opportunities. In the game last night she was given a couple of chances with sets that were completely off. Given the same set, Granato too (who is fantastic at bettering most balls) would be reaching forward for them as well and would not get a good swing on the ball.

In many matches, Maglio sits for long stretches while the team struggles to side out. She has been given very little opportunity in the back and then is asked to come in when the team is already down and struggling in a desperate attempt to find offense. She has asked and exceeded much of what the coaching staff has asked her to do, and continues to step up and elevate her game. I believe she would benefit from staying warm and not getting out of rhythm with the setter. If given a fair opportunity (much like Castillo and Koelsch have been given in their positions), I believe she will continue to elevate her game.

I love KK, but she has been given ample opportunity at OPP and her stats to date are not equating to enough offense for the team. She is a great player off the bench to elevate the team and she has blocking strength. She has done remarkably in what she has been asked to do thus far, but she has struggled to be a terminator. Maglio has all the ability to be a six-rotation player given fair opportunity and on many teams, she would be. Now maybe the time (as we are not even yet through the first half of conference play) to get the reps and see if she can add more options. She doesn’t have to be perfect back there (yet) and she needs more reps to be effective. I don’t think she has to play every rotation back there (though it would help), but she needs to stay active in the game longer rather than sit for long stretches. She would still play the middle, but move around and take swings from the right, left and back row. I think Granato, as good as she is, needs another option on that one rotation so that she isn’t pressured and doesn’t have to take as many swings. I am concerned if she continues taking so many heavy swings that she may get injured. Without her, the team could lose to lesser teams and have zero chance of making the tournament.

I was never high on Ross in the back row, but she is extremely athletic and providing some defense and one more potential option. She isn’t perfect back there either but has been seeing improvement with the reps she is getting. She is a good back row player for Castilo. I’d take Koelsch off for at least a few rotations and let Maglio serve and go through the back row several times in a game. She will get there and the connection with the setter will also improve. Without that extra bit of offense, the team could be sunk. Who else on the team has the potential to step up and be the difference maker? If she can make improvement by the next time they face Poly, the team hopefully won’t go on runs, then give up long runs to the other team.

Volleyball is a momentum game and if the team is steady throughout, they hopefully won’t get lulls and start getting down and making errors. It can take pressure off Granato as well. When someone says, what do we have to lose (or something to that effect)? I concur. Lose the Big West? Have no potential off-season? We are already in danger of that. I can’t see another player on the team with the best chance of stepping up and providing that back row offense (while being steady enough on defense). To be clear, I am not saying give her a completely “new position” such as OPP or OH and take her out of the middle permanently, she would still be a middle playing six rotations. In other words, she would still be on the floor when normally she is sitting on the bench. My lowly opinion of course.

  86. oldtimer808 October 8, 2017 5:53 am

I think its time to give Mags the opportunity to be a six rotation player. The only way the coaches will know for sure is to go for it. This loss shows that this team with their limitations without a true terminator can still be effective. I know the fans have high expectations but the lost of Mitchem and Taylor was huge. I disagree that Smith is better than Kahakai. I personally enjoy watching Kahakai play and we can’t be concerned with Smith because she made her decision to transfer to California and hasn’t shown much this year with California. Players leave for a variety of reasons and that’s the nature of young student/athletes.

  87. FitTrainer October 8, 2017 5:59 am

    76. Agree what a shame it is for Greeley to have her career end like this.

  88. FitTrainer October 8, 2017 6:05 am

    81. I would also like to see Sibley getting some reps in for Koelsch. Her block has not been there, but she can hit. I would have preferred her back up to Granato (like last year) and have Casey on the right, but don’t think that will happen now. I hope she just keeps getting some playing time because I fear we could lose her in the off-season if she doesn’t see any time. Also, she can provide a different look when Koelsch is struggling (so she needs to get in and get some reps there) and for when Maglio isn’t playing a rotation at OPP (unfortunately, maybe wishful thinking).

  89. FitTrainer October 8, 2017 6:11 am

    82. Just because a player is unproven doesn’t mean they didn’t have potential to help the team. Misraje, Lipscomb, Smith, and Light all could have contributed. Immediately maybe not (with the exception of Smith), but they had potential. Many people would have said the same thing about Maglio back in the day. We have already see the potential Howling and Williams may bring in the future. The loss is that they need to be replaced with potentially as good or better recruits.

Hopefully, Misraje knee heels well for beach and we will see what she can do and I hope Lipscomb gets on a decent team next year and eventually shows her potential.

  90. Hot October 8, 2017 6:15 am

    84. Smith apparently had injury issues early in the season but has taken on the libero role in the last few matches. I personally do not enjoy Kahakai shanking passes and missing easy digs.

  91. Hot October 8, 2017 6:25 am

    87. Obviously, most of these players have the potential to contribute, that’s why they were recruited or allowed to walk on in the first place. I am responding to the dramatic “VERY COSTLY” loss of these UNPROVEN players. And again, Misraje was not a standout in high school and is a walk on despite her height. The other players you mentioned – Maglio, Howling and Williams all came in as recruited players with high school accolades.

  92. FitTrainer October 8, 2017 7:28 am

    87. I agree we have no idea if the players are “highly costly” (that was not my comment). Perhaps? We will never know now, but what could be costly is that if players are let go, asked to redshirt or leave then they need to be replaced with as potentially good or better players. Are there other recruits lined up to step in over the next year or two for these players?

  93. Lori October 8, 2017 7:33 am

Come on people. Did you see the replay or the original game? I blame Ryan Kalei Tsuji. During the break Scott asked Lisa and Ryan what does the wahine have to do to finish up? Lisa said keep doing what they are doing. Ryan said let’s finish it up in 3 and go home. Scott said that is the kiss of death and guess what? It was. Hahaha

  94. Maverick October 8, 2017 7:52 am

    83. You actually made points in my argument’s favor, lol. The issue not whether Maglio can be a better outside than Mitchem (and truly not apples to oranges–we are talking about moving a top middle to the outside; of course the players have different strengths, that’s life). The question is whether moving Maglio is a net positive for the team (like moving Annie was) or a net negative. This is the point of disagreement.

For all the reasons you mentioned, moving Annie was a lower-risk decision that worked out very well. Moving Maglio is much higher risk, again for the reasons you pointed out, particularly at this point in the season. I see a lot of hoping/wishing/belief in the Maglio move, but no recognition of how difficult the move will be and or how limited the upside is. The other solution is to continue to work on fundamentals and mental focus, but most posters don’t want to go there. Not an interesting answer, not a hopeful answer.

UH won two sets against Poly with Maglio in the middle (and having her on the court is no guarantee that UH won’t give up big runs, as occurred last night). UH won 2 of 3 against BYU and UCLA with Maglio in the middle. UH can compete with top teams. The issue is overall inconsistent team play and the inability to play at a high level for 3 sets. This won’t be solved by merely moving Maglio to a different position. You still have the passing issues, the serving issues, the mental focus issues. A Maglio move is not a panacea, just something that adds more complexity to the situation. This experiment should have been conducted weeks ago. Now it is a sad hail Mary because fans think playing musical chairs with the lineup is going to yield big results. It won’t. Most players need time to adjust, be better, etc. and Maglio is no superwoman. She’s great, but posters’ expectations of her are too high when projecting her success at outside. We are 2/3 into the season, and the coaches need to focus on solving existing issues rather than creating new ones.

  95. Maverick October 8, 2017 8:00 am

    90. The incoming recruits are not of the quality of the players they are replacing. UH is going to field smaller (i.e., shorter) and less dominant teams in the next 2 years unless a miracle recruit or two commits. And I’m not holding my breath for that to happen until 2020, if at all.

  96. FitTrainer October 8, 2017 8:11 am

    93. I wasn’t referring to replacing the seniors, but replacing the players that have left, quit, de-committed etc.

  97. Maverick October 8, 2017 8:16 am

Interesting, from VT, RPI futures has UH around 30th in RPI rank if they run the table, and around 48th if they lose to Poly and Irvine. UH in the 30s with only one more loss, to either Poly or Irvine. So more hope here than I thought, if these futures are accurate.

    94. Ok, got it. In any case, my comment holds in the generality. Recruiting is not what it was 4 or 5 years ago.

  98. FitTrainer October 8, 2017 8:52 am

    92. I’m okay with agreeing to disagree on some of the points.

I agree that the move to use Maglio as a six-rotation player would have been more effective if done weeks ago. I agree she is not a panacea for all of the team’s problems. I agree that the team should continue to work on fundamentals and mental focus.

What I do not agree with is that having her play as a six-rotation player (at least some of the time) is a “net negative”. It’s a “net positive” to me and I don’t think the team will lose sets or matches because she plays six rotation.

Granato’s shoulder has been bothering her. She’s had heat and/or ice on it. I can’t say for sure, but I believe she was hurting last night though she still finished strong (maybe Cindy can provide input on Granato’s shoulder). What it illustrates (to me) is that there is too much reliance on her. Maglio is the most capable player of adding a back row attack. Granato does better when Maglio and other players are getting points and takes the pressure off her. Other than Ross, Maglio has the most potential to step up and provide offense from the back row. Both Ross and Maglio can play back row (Ross for Castillo in the back row). Maglio can pass/receive and play defense. She is also a capable server.

The team still has a chance (however slight) to win the BW and/or make a tournament run. However, what we are currently doing, in my opinion, isn’t going to take us much further even if we clean up a few aspects of our game. Maglio in six-rotations could give us another dimension. We can “compete” with some good teams or we can potentially raise the bar a little more and wine. And God forbid someone gets injured, I’d rather she get some reps in now at various locations on the court. Bottom line is I feel it could help not hinder. If she doesn’t get in there (and a fair opportunity to get more than just one or two attempts), we may never know.

  99. FitTrainer October 8, 2017 8:53 am

    95. Agree with Maverick about the recruiting not where it was 4 or 5 years ago.

  100. FitTrainer October 8, 2017 8:56 am

    96. haha! That was “win” (not wine or “whine”).

  101. Haikuguy575 October 8, 2017 10:23 am

After last night’s loss to Cal Poly, does Hawaii make the 2017 NCAA tournament or the 2017 National Invitational Volleyball Championship?

Per VolleyballMag.com, the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (Nov. 26-Dec. 12, 2017) will be an annual tournament involving 64 of the nation’s top women’s Division I Volleyball teams. All games, including the semifinals and championship, are hosted by participating schools. Every round is single elimination. The event offers 32 automatic berths, one to each established conference, and 32 at-large berths. The NIVC field and bracket is announced late on the evening of the NCAA Tournament selections. The NIVC is committed to offering deserved opportunities to women’s volleyball programs; the event offers teams an opportunity to get more practices in, to experience playoff-atmosphere games, to play in front of passionate fans and to use their NIVC success and experience as a springboard to the next season.

  102. Casual Observer October 8, 2017 10:27 am

Just reading the comments and wondering: Why is recruiting cited as an issue? Most of the top talent on the team was recruited by the Shoji staff and most or all have outstanding resumes. No one complained or expressed concern when these players were being recruited. And is great recruiting the answer to mediocre coaching or is great coaching the answer to mediocre recruiting? Hopefully the answer is somewhere in between .

  103. Maverick October 8, 2017 11:44 am

My concern about recruiting relates to the future not the past. The current roster will lose many of its senior aces in the next two years, and there are no aces filling up the pipeline. I am worried about what the program looks like in 3 or 4 years.

  104. Maverick October 8, 2017 11:47 am

    99. If UH fails to make the NCAA tourney and decides to go to the NIT, then it will be a new low for the program. Shoji turned down a similar opportunity years back when the team didn’t make the NCAAs. I think UH should have the view of “NCAA or Bust”, rather than let’s get to any post-season tourney that will take us.

  105. Maverick October 8, 2017 11:48 am

Hey FitTrainer, did you use to post under HaleiwaCrossFitter? If so, welcome back.

  106. islandman October 8, 2017 11:54 am

    99. Are there any dollar cost differences to UH in participating in the NIVC vs. the NCAA tournament ?

  107. Maverick October 8, 2017 12:08 pm

    104. NIVC is produced by Triple Crown Sports, and while I can’t find anything about entry fees/costs/etc. for the volleyball tourney, TCS also produces the WNIT for basketball, and I found this bit of cost data for that tournament:

“Everyone wants home games, and the WNIT makes hosting affordable for all teams. Teams can host in the first round for a guarantee of $6,500 a game. They can host in the second round for $7,500 a game.

The WNIT helps offset those costs and assumes all risk for high-cost travel. Teams pay no more than $12,000 combined for all of their road games in the Postseason WNIT. This allows teams to budget for their postseason play and doesn’t penalize them for winning.”

    For the NCAA tournament,
“Transportation expenses and per diem will be provided for the official travel party of 22. Please refer to the NCAA Travel policies for all information regarding transportation and per diem expenses. Travel policies can be found online at http://www.NCAA.org.”

So I anticipate it will be more costly to attend NIVC vs. NCAA

  108. H-Man October 8, 2017 12:44 pm

The problems are in the back row.

  109. tako October 8, 2017 12:55 pm

Regarding recruiting, we need to get the best players available for all positions. For example, signing Elena Oglive would be a great get. Still we need the Emily Hartong and Nikki Taylor impact type players to make a run at the highest levels, specify playing on the court at the same time. Have you seem Texas play yet, lots of big guns all on the court at the same time. Go Wahine, here is for the out years…

  110. z October 8, 2017 1:01 pm

CP came out serving tough after the break and we really struggled. With Castillo and Granato in the back row together I pretty much knew where the serve was going. CP has a finisher in VW. We used to have one in Nikki. Last year she carried the team. We just don’t have that this year. Still it seems like we will have to do better at passing and serving to win games.

  111. rabbit ears October 8, 2017 3:30 pm

Playing Maglio six rotations needed to happen on day one. She would have flourished. But she would have taken a little time to get comfortable. There is no doubt she could do it.

  112. nomu October 8, 2017 4:06 pm

Cal Poly is a top 20 team, and last night, played like a top 10 team. If you are Hawaii, you have to come away from that match a better team and if you don’t, that’s a real problem. Last night, Cal Poly showed they wanted it at least a 100 times more than Hawaii did. And the VW sisters are at least as good as the best in the country.

Now, for the downside. For some reason, there seems to be a Wahine lack of focus and confidence switch that turns on for some players. And at the least opportune times. There should be no room for that kind of negativity.

So, this team takes the first two games playing at a high level. No question, you have to conclude the potential is there to be a great team. They were consistent. Then their mental game, which imho, is one of your top priorities, seemed to slide to a low level.

Last night’s match with Cal Poly should be “humble pie”. Might actually the best thing to happen to the wahine, being on the other end of playing against a conference team with some high level terminators.

Most times, great teams win championships because every player on that team plays at a high level, not just one or two. And last night, it looked like Cal Poly was that high level team, just about everyone played great, showed their grit in winning the last three, and probably in large part because they were playing Hawaii.

Maybe even more so, CP knew they were the better team. CP looks like a team that could very well make it to the post season finals. If CP wins the Big West, they will be a great representative for our conference. Let’s see if the Wahine can win in less than five in CP. That would make things really interesting.

  113. Warriorfan October 8, 2017 5:43 pm

I strongly disagree about CP looking like a top 10 team, they had no middle attack and very weak blocking
Unfortunately the wahine had too many service and miscommunication errors in sets 3/4 and let the younger sister take over in the last two sets so they let a very winnable match get away.

  114. Bleachercoach October 8, 2017 6:53 pm

People who don’t go to Beach Volleyball doesn’t know how athletic Maglio is ! No other indoor player we have can do what she does on the Beach….Remember Beach is 2 players playing 6 positions at once. If you attend Beach games often Maglio can set, pass, kill , and duh? Block.
She is an the All American Indoor and Beach player!!!…Stop the EXCUSES EVERYONE!!!

  115. Bleachercoach October 8, 2017 7:02 pm

Until we recruit a Kim Willoughby, Tree Wiiliams, and Robyn Ah Mow will see ever see that Banner hanging!! Nobody I mean nobody could hit the ball like Tree and Kim…They were hybrid athletes who could move and jump. Robyn flew across the floor making the bad passers look like All Americans….Emily Hartong was our best hitter who played without missing a match (never injured) in a while and Kanoe Kamanao IMO was the best since Robyn Ah Mow….We have good volleyball players today but not great athletes! I take the Athlete over the Volleyball Player
    Just my opinion!!!

  116. Bleachercoach October 8, 2017 7:06 pm

Sorry Teee Williams….she played like a TREE at 5’11” or 6’0″ Kim and Teee could elevate like no other. If we don’t get players that are superbly gifted and special, a 5’10 or 5’11” OH from here locally or mainland won’t cut it in these days of the Giants!

  117. Hot October 8, 2017 8:25 pm

    114. Beach volleyball is not indoor volleyball. Katie Spieler was an AA in beach. You think she’d be great as a six-rotation player indoors?

    111. It’s one thing for Maglio to play six rotations as a middle to add another back row attack option, it’s another thing when some fans are calling for her to move to the right and play six rotations.

  118. FitTrainer October 8, 2017 9:14 pm

    117. Spieler is a fantastic beach player. While she no longer plays indoor, she would be a defensive specialist mainly because of her height and therefore not a 6 rotation player (not that a smaller player couldn’t play six rotations – Carly Kan for example). I don’t think anyone is presuming all beach players can play six rotations or all great indoor players can play both.

Maglio is a standout player in both indoor and beach and few players are accompanied at both. That is part of what makes her special.

  119. Kauaiboy October 8, 2017 10:43 pm

IMO sMith hasn’t looked that great at Cal… I think we can find a better libero… Her plat form is awkward… been watching a lot of volleyball just not Wahine vball, thanks spectrum… I’m not missing much from this Wahine team..

  120. Robin October 9, 2017 8:18 am

Starting to think the NIVC’s reboot could be a godsend for the Wahine. Even if they did make the NCAA tourney, can’t see them making it past the 2nd round at best. Would be more game experience for the younger players, plus the possibility of hosting games. Probably the best teams would still be from the Power 5- top of the lower half of their standings, and maybe the WCC. Not that I would like to see it become commonplace for UH, but again, the additional games would be beneficial.
