Warriors complete first week of bowl practices

Even in the rain — and that’s how it’s been in Manoa all week — the Warriors managed to mix fun and fundamentals in their first four bowl practices.

Head coach Nick Rolovich said the first week of practice “was just OK. I didn’t think it was outstanding. I wish I could say it was outstanding.”

The Warriors opened this morning’s practice with a punting competition between the offensive and defensive linemen. The O-line won when Leo Koloamatangi, who needed to boot one to the 12, hit a 41-yarder than stopped on the 9.

The Warriors then went through position drills the next 75 minutes. The rotation players then were dismissed, turning practice over to the redshirts and developing players.

“This young-guy stuff is good for us,” Rolovich said.

The Warriors, who began the mental and visual preparation for Middle Tennessee, resume practicing on Monday morning. Well, that’s the plan, at least. Rolovich said if anybody misses class, he’ll make the team run tomorrow morning. He has a practice in reserve because the Warriors did not work out the past Wednesday.

For anyone interested … Rolo recently spotted escorting recruits on a tour of the dorms. Seven are here on official visits.

Hope the sun comes out soon. We need those recruits to see our more typically sunny winter weather.

  8. NotNasti December 9, 2016 1:33 pm

Noooo. Don’t take them to the dorms! Well, maybe Frear Hall, our newest dorm. And keep them away from the B-52’s. Don’t want to scare them away.

    Nevada Head Coach Jay Norvell:

“I come from a spread offensive attack. That’s what we’ll do here. We’ll play up-tempo, a spread offense. We use tempo as a tool. I had a great meeting with our players, and I wanted to let them know, defensively, we’re going to get after the quarterback and play tight coverage on people. Special teams will not be neglected. Our best players will play special teams. I was teasing our guys, I said you could be a 2,000-yard rusher and covering on kickoff. It may happen. They got a chuckle out of that.”

In Brent Brennan, SJSU is getting a true west coast coach in every sense of the word. His previous stops include San Jose State, Cal Poly, Arizona, Washington, Hawaii, and Woodside HS (CA). Six years of his coaching journey came at SJSU where he served as offensive cooridnator, tight ends coach, wide receivers coach, tackles coach, and special teams coordinator during different times.

Brennan also has a touch for developing all conference players, and unique NFL talents, with guys like Brandin Cooks, Markus Wheaton, Sean Mannion, Victor Bolden, James Jones, Darrell Jones, Kassim Osgood, Adam Herzing, Ramses Barden, and a host of others on his impressive resume.

Widely respected by his coaching collegues, San Jose State is getting a really good one in Brennan, with some great west coast ties for recruiting that should bode well for the future of the program.

me: I wonder if Colt Brennan will be part of his staff.

The three new HC in the MWC West have extensive offensive backgrounds.

Looks like going to be exciting football in our Division.

    Fresno : Jeff Tedford
    San Jose: Brent Brennan
    Nevada: Jay Norvell

San Jose has an advantage because there aren’t many FBS teams in Cali. On the other hand, cost of living in the Bay Area is crazy. Good luck getting walkons.

It may sound “exciting” to have a pass happy offense but I think the way to go is to be a little more balanced. I used to love JJ’s offence but teams are catching up to those offenses and the better teams not only in the conference( Boise, SDSU, and Wooming) but in the country are “balanced” teams. OSU….Alabama….Clemson and UW are not pass happy.

Pass happy teams put their defense at a disadvantage if they don’t sustain drives. With our tendency to drop balls….I think going to a more ball control offense is the way to go for us.

Hope the team is not missing class. Aren’t finals coming up soon? Like next week?

  17. BigWave96744 December 9, 2016 9:38 pm

I think SJSU has a disadvantage being the bottom of 7 FBS teams in Cali.

    Great Morning All!

Watching the stories and comments on CGD this morning from Baltimore is so moving.

Poignant moment watching the “scroll” as the 2 HC’s are interviewed and seeing the assignments that the Seniors have received with the realization that after this afternoon these men will move on to much bigger callings.

I chuckled what the writer says about Ohio State or was it Alabama about losing 16 starters from 2015 team who had to be replaced and the coach did a great job of replacing them and doing so well

hello! the second rotation on either team can be the starters in most of college teams including the mid to lower levels of all Power 5 schools

what’s so hard about making them 1st team and doing well??

if a lower Power 5 or mid-level coach accomplished that — that would be worthy of discussion and placement within the top 10 coaches of 2016.

jus my opinion — like everybody else here!

with a new group of recruits – it will be late Sunday or early Monday to see if any committed to UH

Maddog50 and others say the 6′ 7″ 315# OL Aussie poly is a solid commit to UH, but why no official statement from ST??

understand he will enroll at UH in January 2017.

speaking of Aussie poly — couple posted that “Baby Shaq”, the 6′ 10″ 325 # OL is enrolled in some fancy high school on the East Coast where the tuition is $70,000/year — wonder who is paying his way? a Michigan or Alabama deep pocket — is this against NCAA policy?

back when certain “private schools” on Oahu were giving “athletic” scholarships, but that changed to “academic” assistance when too many grumbled — one could say that they are an “all-star” team as they recruit from the entire State.

    A-House
    I wrote about him twice.
Just like I wrote about Stallworth in September.
