Warriors need new house rules

It is a dubious distinction that Nick Rolovich is the lowest-paid head coach in the Mountain West and third-lowest overall in the FBS.

And while UH should adjust Rolovich’s salary if he continues to do well, here’s how the school can help the Warrior program in the near future:

> Temporary housing: In a perfect world, an out-of-state hire for an assistant coach’s job will have secured living arrangements before making the move. A school policy is to provide a hotel stay for three days. Because the job probably became available because of a forced change, the new assistant coach is too busy recruiting and doing other catch-up work to find permanent housing in three days. And that’s how coaches live on couches. A little extra help would go a long way.

> Faculty housing: In the recent past, there were a few units available for assistant coaches moving from the mainland. That’s not the case anymore. The housing crunch is real. But it would be helpful if a some still were set aside, even for just a one-year limit.

> Charter flights: As the breadwinner, the football program is responsible for helping other programs. But why is child support so high? I know UH counts loose change under sofa cushions as revenue, but there is something wrong when: 1) the Warriors have to stay overnight Thursday in Phoenix for a game played a 2-hour bus ride away in Tucson, and 2) after defeating Air Force, they’re still in Colorado 24 hours later. In a home-and-home arranged by athletic directors no longer at their schools, UMass will treat the end-of-this-season game as a bowl game, arriving five days in advance UH, meanwhile, will travel 5,000 miles to Massachusetts for a mid-season game next Oct.7.

For 30 years, Guy Antti encouraged players and coaches while making the rest of us feel old and creaky.

After each home football practice, Antti would play toss-and-catch with the players. Sometimes he would do crunches, proving there are no age limits on fitness. (Meanwhile, reporters would use notepads to cover their good-living bellies.)

Antti, who has spent nearly half of his 80-plus years in Hawaii, attended his final UH practice yesterday. He is moving to Las Vegas. We wish him happiness and good health,

Rolovich extended an open invitation to June Jones to attend practices and games. Rolovich and Jones have remained close through the years, and they text and call each other regularly.

Jones showed up at yesterday’s practice. He was greeted warmly by former players and staffers. Jones said he has watched some of the UH games on television. While watching workouts, he noticed 6-7 defensive tackle Viane Moala. Jones had successfully converted Wayne Hunter from defensive lineman to offensive tackle. He praised the development of the players.

And then Jones was gone.

He later said he only had a small window because of prior commitments to meetings.

The arrest of former Warrior Kicker Joe Uglietto is drawing a stir amoung current and former Hawaii athletes of any sport. Those who wore the green and white takes pride in representing the state of Hawaii.

Few players of the past and they are embarrassed and outraged that such behavior went on for over a year.

Some of Joe’s former room and teammates have basically cut him off and no longer consider him a Warrior but a coward.

Why hasn’t the SA covered this story?

He’s the lowest paid coach in the MWC by base salary, but he has the highest maximum bonus of all the head coaches in the conference. So, all he has to do is win the National Championship game every year and he’s right there on top of the list.

Former UH assistants Mike Cavanaugh and Vantz Singletary used to live in the Faculty Housing up in Manoa, if memory serves me correctly. There is an empty President’s House just sitting there in lower Manoa. Why not use it for temporary housing for new coaches?

When I put any of my other email addresses in the e-mail slot, I get moderated. It doesn’t matter, however, if I change my name as long as I use my usual email address.

Good morning Tsaikos. Just a reminder about tomorrow’s Tailgate. All are welcome. We start around 9:30.

When Coach has a chance, he should let us know what else we can do to help besides what we’ve already been doing.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    remember when:

morning/afternoon papers and TV would hail the arrival of opposing teams when they arrived in Hawaii? no longer true.

Palace Inn – hole-in-the-wall eatery near intersection of Keeaumoku and Kinau Streets? good food, but the “draw” was the owner’s 4 daughters — eldest was the most attractive — around the corner was Kokusai theater

UH vs Nebraska — over half of the stadium was “red” – got to see Johnny Rodgers run

Hula Bowl at Termite Palace – Charles White came and refused to play on the advise of counsel – free vacation!

1st time I saw UH lower campus in 1948 — from my uncle’s house across the street — and they were still quarrying — flew on DC 3 and Hawaiian Airlines and stewardess served only the “white” passengers — so glad when Aloha Airlines started flying

i must be very bored at work!!!

    have a great day!!!!!

  14. Maddog50 October 28, 2016 12:59 pm

A House-saw Johnny Rodgers run too……at field level. Half time 18-3 with a controversial call that would have given us 10

  15. Annoddah Dave October 28, 2016 1:30 pm

@#12 A-House: I thought Kokusai was in Kalihi near Toyo. I remember Palace Theater on the corner of Keeaumoku and Beretania. Remember going to Hula Bowl to see Elroy “Crazy Legs” Hirsch.

  16. WarriorNY October 28, 2016 2:01 pm

Is there any way June can come back as a mentor/associate coach with the team? It just seems right to have him on the sidelines…

  17. Inyoface October 28, 2016 2:12 pm

Hawaii’s defense stopped Ezekiel Elliott last year better than most NFL teams this year.

  18. Tempmanoa October 28, 2016 3:03 pm

Slingbox is different from SlingTV which streams all PAC 12 games for a monthly charge. Slingbox is a different company which makes a device which streams material on your TV or DVR to you where ever you are via internet. Slingbox is limited to 2 or 3 persons on the connection.

  19. oldtimer808 October 28, 2016 4:07 pm

Man Annoddah Dave and A-House you guys are old lol…oh wait I used to go the Palace Theater and stand in the line when I was a kid to watch Roy Roger movies. Aiya I’m old too. I used to go to the Civic Auditorium on Beretania for wrestling and when Rogers came to town. The termite palace hosted him too. Nothing like the turkey day games at the termite palace.

JJ is the offensive coordinator at Kapolei High School. He is busy at the moment.

Rolo has to find his own way but it’s good to have “advisors” like JJ and Tomey.

yep, Kokusai was next to the Toyo theater, but had to move with redevelopment of the China Town area – then, Toyo was history!

AD and A HOUSE. ..you guys mo old den me. I no remember palace inn. I remember makiki bake shop and their butter rolls there. As for Hula Bowl…I remember seeing Gary Beban, OJ, and I remember the big 4 qbs…Jim Plunkett, Joe Theisman, Archie Manning and Rex Kern…4 of the top 5 Heisman vote getters that year. I guess i old too.

  25. not sean October 28, 2016 9:13 pm

That Nebraska game with Johnny Rodgers was kinda shame. More red in the stands than anything else. And they were wayyy more loud than us UH fans.

    oldtimer:

remember when Fort Street, yes, Fort Street had Kress Store, Woolworth, and Nuuanu Y was where Longs and Safeway now sits?

Palace Theater moved from downtown to Keeaumoku and Beretania and later became Kokusai — loved to watch “chumbarrah” or Japanese samurai movies — Zatoichi was a favorite as was Ryutaro Otomo the one eyed, one arm swordsman, and ——.

  27. not sean October 28, 2016 9:31 pm

I remember all that too AHouse. And then Kolusai became New Kokusai and then they had different kine movies. Da kine mickey mouse kine. Neva had the guts to go check um out. Was in high school.

  28. islandman October 28, 2016 9:49 pm

There was one theater in Kaimuki located after Queen Theater going towards the east. I looked it up, it was Kaimuki theater and i think i watched three stooges movies there. It was built in 1922 and demolished in 1982.
I saw Crazylegs and also Larry Price in the Hula Bowl, i think. But he didn’t seem to show his crazy legs that much here.
“His crazy legs were gyrating in six different directions, all at the same time; he looked like a demented duck.” Hirsch himself recalled: “I’ve always run kind of funny because my left foot points out to the side and I seem to wobble.” wikipedia

  29. z October 28, 2016 10:21 pm

King theater was the best. Had Godzilla.

  31. Maddog50 October 29, 2016 2:38 am

Utah State looked horrible against SDDU last night. They are a shell of their former selves. FSU jumped on a sluggish and depleted AF defense with 6 starters out. FSU lobs it’s passes and they get completed!!!!
So it’s on to game day and this is a season breaker. They have to get this one buy jumping on them early and having a total breakout game in all phases. They will! Go Warriors!!!!

  32. Warrior Fan October 29, 2016 4:56 am

I hope Jon Veneri periscopes the game again for us tonight! He did it against AF last week & it was great

  33. Paniolo October 29, 2016 5:37 am

Very happy to hear that one of my favorite former Warrior head football coach, June Jones was at the Warrior football practice recently. Also happy to hear that Coach Rolovich still keeps in touch with his former Warrior coach daily.
For me, I hope, maybe they discuss about resurrecting Coach June Jones’s RUN AND SHOOT offense. Some fans who were not around during the Coach June Jones era as Warrior head football coach thinks the RUN AND SHOOT is old and dead. Personally I don’t think Coach Jones would agree to that. Maybe these wet behind the ears new Warrior fans should tell it to June Jones to his face what they think of his RUN AND SHOOT.
I beleive Coach Rolo want to do the RUN AND SHOOT but does not have a quarterback, including the starter Dru Brown, comfortable to run it. I really miss the RUN AND SHOOT, an offense that scored quickly and lighted up the Aloha Stadium scoreboard during the Coach June Jones era with quarterbacks of the past, Timmy Chang, Colt Brennan and of course Coach Nick Rolovich who himself quarterback our Warriors to a 77 to (?) over BYU at Aloha Stadium running the RUN AND SHOOT.
    Hana hou Warriors!!

    Morning, Tsaikos!

Aloha and good health to Guy Antti!

    Let’s GO BOWS!!!

  35. Warrior Fan October 29, 2016 6:23 am

@Paniolo… The offense now w/Rolo is better. More balanced and we utilize the RB & TE. Remember w/JJ as HC, Boise St dominated the WAC. Reason is because the R&S was to one dimensional. With the offense Rolo has now, we’re able to get more recruits, (i.e. TE’s, RB etc..) that fit the scheme and more importantly local athletes fit this offensive system better then the R&S

  36. Akamai Okole October 29, 2016 7:02 am

    Great Morning All!

    it’s GAME DAY!

    GO WARRIORS!

  37. Akamai Okole October 29, 2016 7:04 am

Interestingly, a read of Run ‘n Shoot Football by Tiger Ellison reveals that the RnS is originally more of a run offense.

    Go figgah!

#28 It was called the princess theater. I remember watching old James Bond movies there. It even had a balcony. It was a long walk home to McCully after the movie was over but worth it.

  40. clyde October 29, 2016 8:05 am

#39: If I recall, the Princess Theater (which had a balcony like the Hawaii Theater) was located near downtown, close to where the Pali Safeway and Long’s are now. No one here probably remembers Golden Wall Theater, another classic.

#32: How does periscope work? Do you need an account (i.e. Twitter)? I have a friend who lives on the Mainland who would love to tap into a game.

FWIW: New Mexico’s backfield speed is scary. Gotta limit the “chunk” plays, and try to win in a shootout.

  41. clyde October 29, 2016 8:31 am

Warrior Fan: Re: Periscope. Disregard, I just Googled it.

Tsai’s idea of providing housing for coaching on the surface look like the right thing to do considering the low pay and the expensive housing cost but it the professors and academics find out about this, the University would have a big mess on their hand.

A football coach getting paid $400k getting free housing while the others on campus get paid get paid 10x less would have to fend for themselves with the housing shortage.

Maybe a better solution would be for someone like Artie Wilson or some RA to find some reasonable priced housing for the coaches and in exchange… coaches will provide some service to the RA like speak at some event, do commercial for them, etc…

The university don’t need any more controversy on campus. Football coaches already one of the highest paid state employees. No need go overboard and start throwing money at him. Like other said…he will get his due in time.

Maybe Na Koa can help supplement his salary like they did with JJ.
