White helmets are here to stay

For the rest of this season, the Warriors are expected to wear white helmets. The helmets actually are the refurbished helmets used for retro night.

Here are some other answers to your questions:

Maddog50: When will the streaming issue be resolved?

Answer: Solutions are being pursued to a number of issues involving video streams of live UH pay-per-view telecasts. Although the situation has been worked on for a while, there is no timetable on when it will be resolved for UH football. The UH athletic department offers video streams of Rainbow Wahine volleyball matches using a single camera synced with a radio broadcast. That option is not available for UH football games.

Down With: Rolo, can you bring back Gaylord for all home games? Woot … woot. It really brought back some good memories of the past and UH football in general.

A: “That was kind of a special day,” head coach Nick Rolovich said. “We worked really hard to get it done for that day. I think he’s got some responsibilities that, at this point, I don’t know if he’ll be at every game or consistently. But that’s something we can always talk about.”

Iwonderwhytheyhateme: What happened to wideout Devan Stubblefield?

A: He is recovering from an injury, and will be re-evaluated next week.

Derek: Coach, what are the top three things you look for in a winning quarterback?

A: Quarterbacks coach Craig Stutzmann offers these three: 1) Decision making. 2) Accuracy. 3) Consistency.

Rolovich said: “I like accuracy. I like presence. I like someone who takes the initiative upon himself to lead this football team. The secondary (preferences), I like athleticism and arm strength.”

Pono: Which freshmen will redshirt this season?

A: These true freshmen have played this season: Viane Moala, Kaimana Padello, Jeremiah Pritchard, Keala Santiago, Kalakaua Timoteo III, Davine Tullis, Zach Wilson. Of the other 23 true freshmen, Rolovich said: “I think the final decision will be in a couple weeks. There are a couple who are ready to play. We’re probably going to have to play a few more.” Safety Kalen Hicks and linebacker Ikem Okeke appear to be the most ready to play, if needed.

H-Man: Is wideout Isaiah Bernard going to redshirt?

A: Bernard, a senior, has a redshirt year available. He has not appeared in a game this season. “He’s not high enough on the depth chart at this point,” Rolovich said. “But I think he can do some things to contribute to us.”

Maddog50: Any plans to get fullback Kaiwi Chung some touches?

A: “Sure,” Rolovich said.

Jeezy33: Does Hawaii work on tackling enough during the week?

A: “We do tackling circuit twice a day,” Rolovich said. “We start with tackling circuit every practice since the first day of fall camp.” On Tuesday, the Rainbow Warriors had a 10-minute, scrimmage-like session involving live hitting. “Which you’d rather not do on a Tuesday in the middle of the season,” Rolovich said. “If we keep missing tackles, it doesn’t matter what we call if we don’t do the little things right.”

Clyde: With 2 minutes to play, trailing 63-3 and fourth-and-13 at the Michigan 36, you elected to punt. With nearly a full fourth quarter to play, leading Tennessee Martin 28-24 and a fourth-and-1 at your 29, you elected to go for it. Can you explain the reasoning behind both decisions, and which one is more indicative of your personality?

A: On the Michigan decision, Rolovich said: “I thought we weren’t moving the ball very well. … At that point, that game was not winnable.”

On the UT Martin decision, he said: “It was a big turning point for our team. I’m sure people thought I was crazy. I didn’t want to give them the ball back on fourth-and-inches. Our guys needed to know we believe in them. In hindsight, I’m sure a lot of people thought it was stupid. I’m sure a lot of people think a lot of things I do are stupid. … It was a big play for us. There was a lot of silence on the headset when I said to go for it.”

Warrior Fan: It seems that since we went back to being the “Rainbow” Warriors, we haven’t had much success. Do you think we’ll go back to us being called the Warriors and drop the Rainbow?

A: Athletic director David Matlin said there are no plans to change the nickname. “I think you have a brand and you stick with it,” Matlin said. “Obviously, things can change in the future. Anything’s possible. Right now, there’s no intention (to change). We are the Rainbow Warriors.”

I didn’t see any rainbows in the uniform, just last season’s white, green and grey jersey. Will future uniforms display the rainbow?

  2. truegreen September 14, 2016 10:52 am

first…interesting. i was looking forward to the dark helmets at home.

  3. truegreen September 14, 2016 10:57 am

I bet Rick Blangiardi would’ve come up with a better, faster solution for the many that are shutout from watching UH sports. More proof of Ben Jay’s boneheaded decision to sell UH’s soul to the highest monetary bidder instead of evaluating the overall value of each bidder…

  4. pakegolf September 14, 2016 10:57 am

    Go Rainbow Warriors

  5. djmitcho September 14, 2016 11:08 am

Ugh….don’t like the white helmets. They look “fake”. The dark green helmets have been a signature of the program since they were introduced. Always rated as one of the best looking in the nation.

  6. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 14, 2016 11:14 am

How unfortunate that Stubblefield is so injury-prone. I really thought he was going to be a major spark for our offense. Wish him the best.

  7. bowwar September 14, 2016 11:26 am

The White Helmets “suck”, as it really doesn’t improve the identity or branding of the Warriors. I agree with #5 that the dark green helmets has become a signature of the program and improves the Warrior brand. Please, let’s not start from scratch with the white “sterile” helmets…That’s a part of Chow that needs to be let go…

  8. tom-warriornation September 14, 2016 11:29 am

Yes, the white helmets SUCK; bring back the dark green ones!

  9. Down with... September 14, 2016 11:33 am

    #White helmets suck!!!
    I’m joining the movement

Bring back the “green” helmets, bottles and grass

  10. SailorBlue September 14, 2016 11:33 am

What does the color of the helmet really matter?

Let’s concentrate on the things that do matter. Like the quarterback making good decisions or the defense actually making tackles.

In the list of priorities things to worry about, helmet color ranks towards the bottom.

  11. tom-warriornation September 14, 2016 11:35 am

Why can’t we use the backup OL on the DL since that the D starts with the boys upfront? Also the starting OL play the entire game so why not put some good bodies in there; since we have them? The FUTURE IS NOW!

  12. z September 14, 2016 11:40 am

Too busy watching the game to notice what they are wearing. Players should decide what they want to wear.

  13. kapakahi September 14, 2016 11:44 am

Would like to see Akoteu get more reps……especially since Gifford recovering from his eye injury.

  14. z September 14, 2016 11:52 am

Really like Pritchard and Santiago. Wouldn’t mind seeing Hicks and Okeke in action. 2 positions that need help.

  15. z September 14, 2016 11:53 am

I like what I have seen so far of Akoteu too.

  16. z September 14, 2016 11:57 am

Problem with UH is too many players missing tackles. Must be frustrating for coach Lempa.

  17. z September 14, 2016 12:01 pm

I like that coach went on 4th and one. Team needs to develop a play to win mentality. How many times in the past I have heard how they were playing not to lose. Hope coach Rolo can break them out of that mold.

  18. H-Man September 14, 2016 12:22 pm

From what I can recall, this tackling problem is a carryover from the Norm Chow era. This is a challenge for the coaching staff to have to undo old habits at this stage of the season.

  19. Maddog50 September 14, 2016 12:22 pm

I don’t mind white helmets…..but my preference is metallic green! Matches my Warrior Wagon(truck) Regarding 4th down attempt-do not expect to see that regularly but just like the onside KO to start season expect unexpected-Go Warriors!!!!!

  20. wow September 14, 2016 12:27 pm

lol, chow still being blamed ….

  21. Shadow September 14, 2016 12:32 pm

Count me in for “white helmets suck.” They look cheap (they actually are the cheapest helmet color you can buy) & they make your head look bigger than it is when you got ’em on.

Bring back the dark green ones – we should at least look like “Warriors” . . .

  22. Rodney September 14, 2016 12:37 pm

    Blocking
    Tackling
    Throwing
    Catching
    That’s whats needed
    Playing with confidence too

  23. Ohana Hawaii September 14, 2016 12:48 pm

Hey! I seen how many people that prayer for Davis!. All this saying about football doesn’t mean anything! Just like Stephen a serious condition. Give him a lot’s more of prayer until he gets well. That show him what’s the meaning of Ohana! Because all the mainland kids and their parents doesn’t know the meaning of Ohana. That’s is one way why not four and five stars players don’t want to come to Hawaii. Mel we all in our prayers for your fast recovery

  24. SteveM September 14, 2016 12:52 pm

I like the dark green helmets too… and the retro white ones with the rainbow on it. BUT, I wonder if a white helmet makes the receiver’s route easier to see and judge than dark helmets?

As for going for it on “4th and inches”… I recall Vince Lombardi threatening to quit if his team can’t get him one yard when needed. Just saw another famous Lombardi quote:

“Some people try to find things in this game that don’t exist but football is only two things-blocking and tackling.”

“A school without football is in danger of deteriorating into a medieval study hall.”

  25. BigWave96744 September 14, 2016 12:55 pm

    – White helmets looks like practive helmets. On the road with all white makes them look like Penn St.

    – Kapena”s Masese & CheeHoo cam to start the 4th is better than “Country road, take me home”. Too bad the audio didn’t work on the first try.

    – Ha’a, done before the team goes into the locker room seems to be done too early. Stadium is still empty, then the jacked up players goes back in the locker room for the next 10 minutes or so. I like when they did the Haka or Ha’a before kickoff

  26. BigWave96744 September 14, 2016 12:56 pm

    practice not practive

  27. Shadow September 14, 2016 1:13 pm

Come this Sat, UH will be on national TV for 3 of their first 4 games. Was (& will be) great opportunity to show everyone (particularly recruits) that we have an up & coming program that is worth paying attention to & being a part of.

Hope we show something special this week, ’cause so far, the performances have not been so great & these opportunities are being squandered.

  28. H-Man September 14, 2016 1:50 pm

Check out the statistical comparison between Hawaii and Arizona; http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400869108
Teams statistically very close except for one glaring difference – Points Allowed per Game.

  29. NorthShoreFan September 14, 2016 2:00 pm

Unis can be kalakoa for all I care. As long as the Win Column is up there and the Loss Column is 0!…LOL or 2 from here on out!
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  30. HawaiiMongoose September 14, 2016 2:17 pm

Another vote here for the dark green helmets. They look great and have been nationally recognized on at least one “best college football helmets” list.

Having said that, I can live with the white helmets for this season, provided we don’t bring back the rainbow-themed uniforms. Aside from the fact that the rainbow unis seriously undermined the green/black/white color scheme and Polynesian Warrior motif UH had spent 15 years building up as its football brand, we were outscored 93-0 wearing those things.

  31. steve P September 14, 2016 2:29 pm

ST, you’ve suggested that the white helmets are here to stay, does this infer that the team will not be wearing the dark helmets again.. and if so, why?

  32. Bart Barker September 14, 2016 2:36 pm

There is no excuse to not stream home games to the mainland. Our son would not have chosen Hawaii had we known we would not be able to watch home games. This will significantly hurt recruiting.

  33. Ipu Man September 14, 2016 2:36 pm

Didn’t we beat BYU twice with those “rainbow” classic uniforms?

  34. Inyoface September 14, 2016 2:40 pm

We never had matte green helmets, I think the would look sick!

  35. FatJeff September 14, 2016 2:48 pm

Just don’t feel the white helmets. Especially after seeing the team practice in white helmets for the past few years.

The dark green helmets were so distinctive and were there for some really good years. Hopefully they will return next year.

Yes, I AM stuck in the past.

  36. 808 September 14, 2016 2:49 pm

It was a nice when Hawaii won the Holiday bowl know as the Hawaii Rainbows. But, when JJ came to Hawaii and changed the branding it felt like Hawaii was placed on the national map.

When JJ left, the group of people who wanted the Rainbow name back got their wish when BJ officially changed the nickname to Rainbow Warriors. It was done to probably appease both sides of the Rainbow vs Warrior argument.

If Rolo and company keep on winning, it won’t matter whether Hawaii is known as the Rainbows, Warriors or Rainbows………..Just Win!

  37. dopaco24 September 14, 2016 2:51 pm

White helmets are horrible. They are even worse for the home uniforms. If you aren’t going to have a green helmet for the home uniforms, then you need a grey or silver one to at least match the sleeves. The green helmets don’t even match the home uniforms, but they at least look better than the whites.

  38. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 14, 2016 3:10 pm

The only thing of value when it came to national branding was the “H” logo. That and ONLY that. Only a handful of people on a national scale probably know that we are/were Hawaii Warriors and now are the Rainbow Warriors, much less care one way or the other.

What they do know is the “H,” and that hasn’t changed nor will it change for the foreseeable future.

  39. football junkie September 14, 2016 3:25 pm

I don’t like the white helmets for home games. I also don’t like the gray pants/color scheme. If they are going to wear the white helmets they should wear white pants. Better yet, go back to the green helmets, green jerseys, and the black pants for home games. Regardless of the color of their uni’s, they need to tackle better.

    GO WARRIORS! BEAT THE WILDCATS!

  40. Sangamon Keith September 14, 2016 4:11 pm

Answer about streaming isn’t a good answer. At a minimum, we should be able to see replays of games via UH links or on YouTube. Athletic Department isn’t being urgent enough about this problem. I understand the live streaming issue Asa contractual obligation … but at least let mainland fans have access to replays! Mushy words about other sports being viewable is only aggregation fans … not soothing!!!

  41. H-Man September 14, 2016 4:12 pm

808, as I recall, the reason or thinking behind the change was to standardize the name for the men’s program. Basketball and baseball went by Rainbows or Rainbow Warriors, while football were the Warriors. BJ conferred with the coaches and the single name selected for branding purposes was Rainbow Warriors with the concurrence of the coaches. The women were the Rainbow Wahine.

  42. z September 14, 2016 4:22 pm

Watching replay of game now. White helmets look okay to me. If they are cheaper good. I would spend more money on recruiting.

  43. A-House September 14, 2016 4:54 pm

UH tackling opponents is/are a continuing problem and needs to be fixed — tackling techniques are helpful, but if the player does NOT have the upper body or arm strength technique will not help

opponents will continue to make UH look bad.

  44. A-House September 14, 2016 4:57 pm

    personal opinion–

color of helmets – wearing fancy uniforms remind me of a person who is stuck on “status” — uniforms including helmets don’t win games – players do!

  45. z September 14, 2016 5:01 pm

Pumphrey is going to Faulk us.

  46. Keola September 14, 2016 5:06 pm

Wth? Whose idea was it to get rid of the green helmets? Can’t express enough how stupid that is.

  47. shadow September 14, 2016 5:09 pm

We ain’t winning yet & we need whatever edge we can get to get the kind of players that can win.

Helmet color, uniform design, eqpt brand, etc. can make a difference to high school players. How many teenagers you know wear “white” to show power, strength, superiority, in general, the “Warrior” qualities?

The dark green metallic helmets were unique to UH football & were synonymous with the most successful years the program has had. Bring ’em back UH!

  48. z September 14, 2016 5:18 pm

Also # 23…u make sum good valid points…

Question….is it allowable to send a fruit basket to a scholarshi player confined in a hospital, or is that againSt NCAA RULES…???

  51. pakipark September 14, 2016 6:09 pm

I like the white helmets. But the grey pants look like sweatpants or baseball pants.
White pants with green tapa trim. Save the Rainbow for Homecoming and retro night. Other than the uniform, defense needs work. In 1999, June Jones’ first year as HC at UofHawaii, after getting whupped at USC 62-7 (okay, there were some real bad calls), UofHawaii came home to play their home opener against Div-IAA (FCS) Eastern Illinois. Uof Hawaii barely escaped with a 31-27 win. Uof Hawaii trailed most of that game until QB Dan Robinson went crazy throwing the football all over the place. Let’s give Coach Rolo some time.

  52. BigWave96744 September 14, 2016 6:29 pm

We did not beat BYU twice with the retro jersey with the rainbow on the shoulder Those were worn by the 1959 team

    http://gamedayr.com/lifestyle/fashion-uniforms/photos-hawaii-rainbow-warriors-throwback-uniforms-88212/

  53. Tracy Takeshita September 14, 2016 7:05 pm

The helmets are ugly but it matches their play. Rolo should make it an incentive that they can’t wear the green helmets until the play improves.

  54. cocobean September 14, 2016 7:13 pm

Hey coach how about this. If and when attendance goes over 30 K fans for a game we go back to the dark green helmets.

  55. FearGod September 14, 2016 7:19 pm

But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.
“When you pray, don’t babble on and on as people of other religions do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again. Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!

  56. kahuna September 14, 2016 7:24 pm

I think when Rolo said that the white helmet is here to stay I think he meant it will be part of the team’s regular uniform combo….not like the old rainbow logo one…which the team busted out for special games.

I don’t know …maybe Rolo feel in love with white helmets while at Nevada and decided to make the white helmet the #1 helmet. I honestly doubt they threw away perfectly good green helmets. Maybe the green will come out for special games. Maybe Rolo not a black/dark green kind of guy.

  57. FearGod September 14, 2016 7:43 pm

    GOOD EVENING, HAWAII!

What’s in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as fair.

White helmets, green helmets, black helmets, Bows, Rainbows, Warriors – just win, baby!

  61. Maui Boy September 14, 2016 8:20 pm

White Helmets Suck. They only remind us of the first 3 games we played with them.
Don’t let the Coach or players chose the helmets or uniforms. Let the Marketing Department decide. Brand marketing produces revenue. Revenue pays the teams bills.

  62. kev-1 September 14, 2016 8:40 pm

Why does it have to be one or the other with the helmets? There are many teams that have multiple color helmets? Why not mix it up?

I embrace Rolo as the coach and am excited about what I feel he has to offer. I am also not one who likes to continue to throw out the JJ references either. But dang, I sure miss his creativity with the branding of the football team.

The old schoolers will say “it doesn’t matter what color they wear.” Tell that to the 19-22 year olds that wear them.

  63. kev-1 September 14, 2016 8:42 pm

White helmets with the white away uniforms. Green helmets with the green home uniforms. Simple. Get creative from there.

The only problem with the green color is that the shade selected for the uniforms by UA don’t even come close to matching the helmet. Heck, do we even know what the actual school green color is? Is it the old school one? I think they call it Kelly Green????

  64. Hilorain September 14, 2016 8:46 pm

If you read ST info on white helmet, it is refurbished retro rainbow helmets. If that’s the case, reading between the lines, sounds like green helmets may have run their course and cannot be used anymore. Hope they are planning on a new dark helmet.

  65. NorthShoreFan September 14, 2016 9:20 pm

    Tough Games this weekend.
    UH – Arizona
    Kahuku – Bishop Gorman
watched replay of BG / Bosco Me thinks BG will play the run and force Kahuku to pass.
Kahuku will need to man the lanes and be disciplined with their assignments.
BG read option is run very well with Tate at the helm. Dude is really accurate with his long throws.
    IMUA WARRIORS! IMUA RED RAIDERS!

    “””Discipline indeed”””””
David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. Today the LORD will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! And everyone assembled here will know that the LORD rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the LORD’s battle, and he will give you to us!”

  68. Petey808 September 14, 2016 11:28 pm

Agree! White helmets look terrible! Does remind me of chow days.

  69. mileHIwarrior September 15, 2016 3:52 am

More things to worry about than the uniforms and helmets. I do recall though in the UH vid when Rolo first arrived as Coach. He was handed 2 helmets, white and green, when he walked through the UH offices. He immediately took notice of the white helmet.

  70. UHBooster September 15, 2016 5:59 am

Somebody, please post the UH vs UT Martin game online for all the Mainland fans!!!
I know the game is over, but I would like to see how the game went overall.

  71. warriorfan September 15, 2016 6:08 am

Agree, white helmets just dont look good and we need to bring back the green helmets for home games and get rid of those ugly gray pants…..

Also agree, the answer to the streaming question doesnt tell us a thing. Why does the AD and athletic department not care enough to serve their supporters. Sounds like a lot of BS to me….

  72. Postmanke September 15, 2016 6:23 am

I like the white helmets. Gonna look even better when we beat UNR in a couple weeks.

You guys need to get more excited about the White Helmets !
