Monday football notebook

> Defensive tackle Kennedy was charged with two counts of assault in the third degree, as well as resisting arrest and harassment, stemming from his April 12 arrest at a McCully Street apartment complex. The assault charges replace the accusations of two counts of abuse of a family or household member. Because Tulimasealii and the witness did not live in the residence, among other factors, the charges were amended to assault. The assault and resisting arrest charges are misdemeanors; harassment is a petty misdemeanor. He will be arraigned on May 10 in District Court.

> The Warriors are not included in the Mountain West’s 2016 schedule of Friday night games — sort of. The Warriors and California will open the season on Aug. 27, which is Saturday in Australia but Friday in Hawaii.

> Maybe it is self-expresesion or the byproduct of a 16-year friendship between Nick Rolovich and Nate Jackson, whose ponytail could cover the “K” and split “1” and “2” on the back of an old UH jersey. But after four years of ten-hut haircuts, long hair is indeed back … and front … and vertical this spring camp. What also has returned is a sticker of a player’s alma mater on a practice helmet.

Why in the world would anyone want to knowingly put a Punahou sticker on their helmet? Don’t they know that people would then naturally think that they went to Punahou? Some things are better just left unsaid.

The Buffanblu has a proud history dating back to 1841. I should think any alumni would be proud to wear/display their school’s insignia.

Manoa Mist, no one’s preventing you from placing your Iolani stickers anywhere.

    Imua!

Is anybody familiar with the actor David Straitharn?

He plays a lot of WASP-ish characters(e.g. Woody Allen’s “Interiors”), so it came as a shock to me that he is part-Hawaiian and attended Punahou. Now when I see him, it’s unmistakable. He played on the same basketball team as Barack Obama.

  10. NotNasti April 25, 2016 1:54 pm

    Cappie,
David Straitharn is 12 years older than Obama, and graduated from Redwood High in California. He is, however, part-Hawaiian.

NCAA Amended Notice of Allegations vs UNC, Level I violations, looks like a whitewash of UNC men’s basketball program and looks like that program is not mentioned in the Notice. In contrast, UH had Level II violations and was banned from post season, loses scholarships and vacates victories. What about the UNC men’s basketball and football player(s) who attended fake classes ?

    Can’t someone with Hawaii
ties and is in national media
do a story of UH basketball
    punishment vs NCAA white
    wash of NC basketball.

  13. islandman April 25, 2016 2:50 pm

An earlier story said the NCAA said they don’t have jurisdiction to determine the legitimacy of classes. It is not calling the classes academic fraud but calls them impermissable benefits. But the Notice conveniently only cites the Women’s basketball program.

  14. NorthShoreFan April 25, 2016 4:42 pm

Anyone thought that NC was going to get the death penalty? I was just waiting to see how the NCAA was going to sweep this under the rug. After carrying on for 20 years, the NCAA passed “new rules” to minimize all these years of cheating. Apparently the fake classes do not seem to violate any NCAA rules. They white wash it by saying the don’t certify legitimacy of classes. That’s where the “basket weaving” classes come in.
Anybody want to sign up for Lauhala Weaving?

  15. 808 April 25, 2016 5:16 pm

The NCAA will hammer UNC’s women basketball team. Someone will have to take the fall for 18 years of fake classes. They will go after the program that brings the least amount of money.

Mark Emmert and his cronies will continue to get paid large salaries. The business model of the NCAA works well for them. Why ruin a perfectly good ATM for the NCAA executives? I doubt they even care what happens to student athletes. For them, it is protecting the business model – NCAA Basketball and football.

  16. Ipu Man April 25, 2016 5:34 pm

    I agree with Rodney #12.
    But who could do it.
    Maybe Obama 🙂

  17. Mauian5 April 25, 2016 5:43 pm

Maui High LB Felti Afamui 6’2 215 picked up his 2nd offer from University of Hawaii.

  18. oldtimer808 April 25, 2016 6:28 pm

Manoa Mist why so sensitive. It’s only on their practice helmets. I think it’s a great idea to continue to instill pride in their players. Nothing wrong in acknowledging where each player came from and it may have a positive impact on future recruits to know that their coaches care.

  19. A-House April 25, 2016 7:09 pm

    UH coaches for all decades:

why pursue a student athlete who has NO chance academically of being admitted to UH? because of being a good/great athlete? because the coaching staff does not want to be identified as not pursuing/showing interest in one?

false impressions make one look bad — publicly, you can make a general statement of “ask the athlete” — “first to thy self be true”

me tinks Trapasso is on a very, very short leash

  20. A-House April 25, 2016 7:19 pm

if the NCAA say they are not responsible for legitimacy of classes — why make/follow the APR rule and punish programs who fail to meet “their standard” by reducing scholarships, etc?

me lazy, but who created the NCAA? why??? where do the “members” come from?

where is that little or unknown attorney who wants to make a big splash hiding?

  21. seewhy April 25, 2016 7:19 pm

Glad to see the coaches visiting the neighbor island high schools today. There is talent out there too.

  22. Not an Expert April 25, 2016 9:08 pm

One done and one to go for the NCAA to clear the 2 schools that should have or should get the death penalty.

North Carolina having fake classes equating to false diplomas. What gets me is that if history is our proof collegiate woman athletes have had a better percentage in graduating than their male counter part. This allegation when first brought to the attention of the NCAA was due in part to their men’s basketball program.

Can you imagine Louisville being let off the hook too. The story will change people will get paid off big time. Was there any recruits that attended this alleged hookers party under the age of 18? Being laws may have been broken it is out of the jurisdiction of the NCAA.

  23. Not an Expert April 25, 2016 9:17 pm

Investigate all the names of the male athletes during that time that took the bogus class, provided they can find the list or a computer document showing such. My guess the list was destroyed and a new one created. If on the schools computer of North Carolina they would be able to uncover the truth provided the NCAA makes an effort to do so. Cover up?

  24. Maddog50 April 26, 2016 8:11 am

Just like Tark the Shark said “the NCAA is so mad at Kentucky their going to give Cleveland State another year of probation!” Feel free to insert any other schools in the quote like Syracuse Louisville or North Carolina and the other school might be Haw…….no not that-it would never happen. Go Warriors!

  25. Ryan April 26, 2016 11:03 am

Rashad McCants has openly talked about the bogus classes and Roy Williams knowing.

    http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/11036924/former-north-carolina-basketball-star-rashad-mccants-says-took-sham-classes

How is fudging grades to get someone eligible not the NCAA’s business, but fudging a line on a transcript to get a player eligible the NCAA’s business? And in the case of UNC, it was hundreds of student athletes who got bogus A’s and useless diplomas that served no purpose once their athletic careers were over.

  26. Rodney April 26, 2016 11:20 am

    NCAA is a utter Farce!!!!
    UNC fiasco shows that the
    NCAA really cares of the
    “Student athlete”.
