When he was passed up for the permanent Hawaii basketball job, former interim coach Benjy Taylor had a go-to line he’d use when anyone asked him about his plans.

“I’m going to be just fine, man,” he’d say.

Thursday, Taylor was announced as an assistant coach at Southeast Missouri State, of the Ohio Valley Conference.

The Redhawks are struggling this season at 3-16 and 0-6 in the OVC. But considering Taylor was working at a car dealership in recent weeks, you’d have to think he’s happy to be back in Division I coaching. Especially considering it’s rare for teams to add staff members at this point of the season.

These are the former UH hoops staffers of the Arnold/Taylor era still in Division I coaching: Taylor; Jamie Smith, UH director of operations; Kerry Rupp, Oregon State assistant; Chris McMillian, Illinois-Chicago director of player performance; Senque Carey, Florida Gulf Coast assistant; Brad Autry, Southern Illinois assistant.

Very happy for Benjy Taylor. A real man’s man. Just walked the High Road, didn’t fight. Dealt with UH Manoa and their decisions and moved on. He will be successful, with the year he had, the 22 win season, runnerup BWC tournament, a few minutes shy of getting lead an win to NCAA dance, as well as Hugh Durham Mid Major mid season National Coach award. He will be even better. Imagine, he can recruit another Isaac Fleming, or a Jankovic, or a Mike Thomas, Aaron Valdes.. a lot of talent in the Mainland USA. .and Benjy has tons of contacts.. from all over the country.. Man, should be interesting.. SEMS.. they got him Just IN TIME for recruiting for next season..! Let the recruiting wars begin !

Good fortune and best wishes to Coach Taylor, the Best One Year HC UH MBB ever had.. and a truly great coach, and mentor. and his great young family !

A bit overblown comments from poor boy. UH with our facilities should be top two in Big little west conference every year instead fibber and Taylor were mediocre at best ranked middle of pack and never went to NIT or NCAA post season That’s the truth whether you like it or not.

Poorboy L O V E S Benjy! All of those accolades and he gets asst job with SE Missouri State. And Poorboy was predicting schools ( high mid major or better) would be smothering Benjy with HC offers. Looks like he was a bit off with that prediction. Maybe Poorboy can get off UH sites now and follow his bff on SEMS site. One can only hope….
