Match day: King

The volleyball Warriors open the 2016 season tonight against King in the first round of the Outrigger Resorts Invitational in the Stan Sheriff Center.

Here’s what we know …

… Um, uh, well …

OK, OK, King is a bit of a mystery. The Tornado — that’s a singular collective noun, like Cardinal, Heat and Wolf Pack — is a member of Conference Carolinas. King is a Division II school located in Bristol, Tenn.

The Warriors, meanwhile, return starters in an offense’s first two phases — passing (libero Kolby Kanetake and outside hitters Siki Zarkovic and Kupono Fey) and setting (Jennings Franciskovic). If the Warriors dominate, Joel Worsley might get some playing time. He’s a promising freshman who has drawn comparisons to Nejc Zemljak.

Opposite Stijn van Tilburg, a 6-8 freshman from the Netherlands, is going to be the go-to attacker.

Harvard and Lewis play at 4. First serve for the UH-King game is at 7 p.m.

Nick Rolovich is a collector of unique antique. On his desk is what appears to be a simple Rolodex. Instead of numbers, it contains words of wisdom from Mouse Davis. There’s one card for each day. (Presumably there’s a 366th card for this leap year.)

    WOW – maybe second.

    A Rolo-dex?

He can always add these 4 from another famous Mouse from Aneheim:

“To Laugh At Yourself Is To Love Yourself.” – MM

“Live Every Moment As Not To Regret What You Are About To Do.” – MM

“Arithmetic Is Being Able To Count Up To Twenty Without Taking Off Your Shoes.” – MM

“Don’t Stress Over Anything You Can’t Change.” – MM

    Good morning Tsaikos!

It’s the start of MVB!! Remember, no TV coverage for the tournament, so come on down to the SSC to watch it in person.
BTW, ST, it’s JOE, not Joel, Worsley.

That was one ugly basketball game last night.

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

    Good morning everyone!

A rolodex with words of wisdom from Mouse Davis… now I’m curious.
BTW, some coaches say Mouse brought the Run ‘n Shoot offense with him on the Mayflower. Maybe not, but he would have a lot so say about life and football over the years.

  7. el burro sabio January 7, 2016 12:17 pm

SteveM, I heard a tale that Mouse had to dive in the ocean and save the run ‘n shoot plans when the Santa Maria sank.

Good one, Not Nasti #3 🙂

Ahhh…so there is a Mouse in the Rolo-House…

Just finished listening to Coach Rolo and his crew at the Downtown Athletic Club broadcast. Coach continues to impress with his sincerity and genuine aloha. Speaks from the heart, was the way the radio folks put it. I have to agree.

Rolo has some well laid plans for building the program. Loving it so far.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

#10 – Mouse DNA, all the way. Good genes, dat.

That was a very good singing of Hawaii Pono’i. At first, i got a message saying the video was unavailable, but then it came on.

#11, the Downtown Athletic Club event was nice. The buffet was much better than the Chow Mein and Chow Fun when the previous coach was introduced. Learned that our WR coach’s name is pronounced “Ke-fen-say” and not like “defense” with a “K”, and that Rolo received a boatload of unsolicited recommendations in support.

This was much more low key that the Norm Chow intro where he whipped up the emotions of the crowd by speaking of preparing players for the NFL and chasing championships. Rolo’s mantra seems to be to do things the right way, and the feeling I had was one of synergy among the coaches. I think they will work well with each other.

So now that Stephen Johnson has been offered by Kentucky…are we to be the bridesmaid?

Happy Birthday to gigi-hawaii, one of the founding Tsai-kos and Blog Party 1 hosts.

  19. Sangamon Keith January 7, 2016 7:09 pm

#16 Al, I think Johnson would be foolish to go to Kentucky. They have a returning starter who has already thrown for over 3,000 yards twice, and a freshman who has already showed starting abilities this last year. With only two to play two, he’s looking at a senior year only chance to play.

Stijn Van Tilburg had a pretty good night, worth the price of admission!
I hope people check the warrior volleyball team out.

Thanks for the story Da Punchbowl Kid.
    Now for some linemen

    Way to go, Sarah Toeaina.

I nearly tumbled into the next row when she missed that open layup which could have cut the Penn lead to one.

Leading scorer, again, on the road, like at the beginning of the season.

How many games can Hawaii win with a three-point field goal percentage under twenty-five percent?

    So far, 8.

Defense and rebounding, and especially, hustle.

They’re going to have to win with intangibles.

Coach Beeman has done a brilliant job with the scheduling.

They beat a lot of bad teams on the road, hence the 5-0 road record going into the Big West opener against Long Beach State.

And, conversely, getting their lunch handed to them when facing superior talent has evidently gotten them ready for conference play.

Frankly, I’m shocked that they won today. The first quarter of the Penn game was very depressing.

    Faith restored.

  24. MAKA January 8, 2016 7:41 am

Anyone know who the coaches were for the game last night ?
