May we suggest …

This is the first week Nick Rolovich can add newcomers to his staff. While there is a large selection — he joked he has 700 new friends since being hired — he also is taking his time to vet and analyze the candidates.

Not sure whom he’ll pick, but I’ve always liked these guys:

> Phil Austin: The former UH safety is now Fullerton College’s associate head coach. He previously was a quality-control coach at UCLA assisting Adrian Klemm with recruiting and Jeff Ulbrich with the linebackers.

> Chris Brown: One of the strongest Warriors, Brown honed his coaching skills at Saint Louis, Damien and, now, Bishop Gorman.

> La‘anui Correa: People always talk about the importance of not just liking football, but loving it. As legend goes, Correa used to wear a UH helmet when he slept in the days leading to training camp. He’s coached at Saint Louis, but his personal tutorship is displayed with the development of Boise State sack specialist Kamalei Correa.

> Nate Ilaoa: He knows the game, he played it very well, and he has the charm — and connections — to be a very good coach and recruiter.

> Ashley Lelie: Rolo and Lelie were a dynamic duo in 2002. They coached together for a year at Nevada. Since then, Lelie has coached the receivers at Alabama A&M. The Bulldogs’ passing game struggled, but when they completed passes, they averaged 16.6 yards.

> Kevin Lempa: While the Warriors were racking up those yards in the early 2000s, it was Lempa’s defense that produced NFL prospects. Lempa’s third stint at Boston College (as DB coach) might be the best. The Eagles lead the nation in total defense (254.3 yards per game), No. 2 against the run (82.8 yards), and No. 9 against the pass (104.66, with 13 interceptions against nine TDs).

> Victor Santa Cruz: The former UH linebacker has built a nice little program (on a little budget) as Azusa Pacific’s head coach. He was a feisty player who has combined intelligence and feistiness as a coach.

> Brian Smith: The coach who recruited Alex Green and Brenden Daley to Hawaii has been doing good work as Occidental College’s offensive coordinator. This season, Bryan Scott completed 65 percent of his passes with 22 TDs against six interceptions, and Kwame Do averaged 174.6 rushing yards per game.

> Craig Stutzmann: He is best remembered for that celebratory punt in the rout of BYU (the final UH game for him, Lelie, Smith and Rolovich). But what should be remembered is his success as offensive coordinator at Emory & Henry this season. The Wasps have been stinging opponents for 446 yards and 36.6 points per game.

> Matt Wright: Lempa used to consider Wright, a former Saint Louis head coach, as player-coach. Wright’s hand-written notebook was rich with detail and observations. Wright owns Sportstage, which aspires to be the next HUDL.

Fine list of individuals, but the salary cap for assistants at $1 million will largely determine who will be hired. I don’t see any currently employed D-I assistants from the mainland, coming here. That’s the reality of UH”s situation.

In addition, what about the strength & conditioning program? Will there be changes? What about the quality of the team’s training meals? Nutrition plays an important part of a successful program.

  5. A-House December 6, 2015 10:29 am

    el burro:

from yesterday – I was thinking of all those games years ago when Rolo was the QB and games there after which show cased the various “systems” used by UH

can go even earlier, if available, to drum up fan support to purchase tickets and attend games – there are many from 20 or 30 years ago that are still interested, but cannot go because of physical limitations and purchase PPV — another way to support the school

stir the pot now and keep stirring until the “wave” of support by the fans becomes a tsunami and local players commit to being a Warrior!!! just adding to the “fever”

  6. Former UH Athlete December 6, 2015 10:36 am

    Stutz as OC
    Brown as LB Coach/Strength+Conditioning
    Ilaoa as RB Coach
    Santa Cruz for DC
    Austin for DB coach/recruiting coordinator

Those would be my preference given the names mentioned.

I’m fairly indifferent about the rest, the applicant pool is vast, so there are bound to better choices not identified yet.

  7. A-House December 6, 2015 10:39 am

congrats to the Wahine VB team for sweeping Texas A&M and moving on to the next “regional”

guess the NCAA is NOT concerned how much they earn off the regional games – 2086 may have been a season “high” for the hosts, but not even close to what UH would have been able to pull in with 2 sell outs – let’s see, $16 x 10,000 = $160,000 x 2 = $320,000 — that’s a lot of “bread” to cover all travel and hotel expenses and leave a health profit for them

oh, well, the beat goes on to keep UH from hosting regionals every year such as Washington — Nebraska has high attendance numbers, but is it true that games are free?

  8. Mel December 6, 2015 10:42 am

The days of 40,000 plus at games are a thing of the past with PPV. Old Stadium that is falling apart, poor customer service, drunks, the list goes on. There has to be more than just sitting there for 4 hours and maybe buying a hot dog or saimin.

  9. Former UH Athlete December 6, 2015 10:42 am

Ilaoa seems like a no brainer because he already lives here, which makes it easier on the budget.

  11. 3-Prong December 6, 2015 11:01 am

NCAA Seeding: Yup it’s not about money. P5 led selection committee is all about ignoring coaches poll and hiding behind “strength of schedules” in awarding host sites. They are all about keeping their teams in the rankings and playoffs. Even if an institution like Shoji is disrespected it doesn’t bother them.

  12. Bryson December 6, 2015 11:02 am

The one mistake Rolo can’t make when it comes to his hires is to hire someone who has little to no recruiting experience or contact’s…I like the fact that Rolo wants to make the right choice and I’m sure he will choose coaches who have the same values and are tireless workers and teachers

As warrior fans that’s all we can ask of the local recruits – consider attending UH. In the end they have to do what they think is best for them. Life is bigger than football. If they still go away, wish them well and represent the 808 the best they can.

  24. Bugaz December 6, 2015 11:58 am

Mr. A-House, can be done but depends who owns the rights to broadcast those games and what they will get out of it. For example, I can’t see Blangiardi showing those games if there isn’t enough interest or if there is nothing in it for him.

  27. Sangamon Keith December 6, 2015 12:17 pm

As much as I want former UH players to succeed, it would be unwise to make this an all-local coaching staff. I like Kevin Lempa and Tyson Helton … both former UH coaches under June and both having success at higher levels. I sill like Rich Miano for the continuity of leadership back to the Jones-McMackin era, his recruiting talent, his walk-on program and love for the UH.

  37. Mel December 6, 2015 1:38 pm

Joe Seumalo would be a good get, but he’s probably looking to return to the Pac-12, with all of his OSU experience. Too bad he was the odd man out when Gary Andersen brought over Chad Kauhaahaa with him as D-line coach at OSU. Salary scale at UH is just too low, IMHO.

  38. azwarrior22 December 6, 2015 1:40 pm

JJ for OC; Glanville for DC 🙂

  39. Ran December 6, 2015 2:59 pm

I agree with #26 Graham. Timmy Chang, who is OC at Jackson State, but the HC at Jackson State was fired earlier this season. TC might be looking now.

  40. Frannyk December 6, 2015 3:29 pm

Rolo said he wanted to have a wide open offense that also used the QB run every now n then. He said he wanted to see the defense “fly around” with “H’s” on their helmets.

Stutzmann uses a fast paced wide open offense called the Spread and Shred. Stutz said his perfect game of 100 plays would be 50 passing, 50 running.

Wouldn’t it be great to see the two teammates on the sidelines together once more as they light up the scoreboard of Aloha Stadium?

Stutz for OC, Miano for DC!

  41. Frannyk December 6, 2015 3:32 pm

    TC for QB coach

  49. Not an Expert December 6, 2015 4:02 pm

Difficulty to hire JJ due to administration views or JJ wanting to be part of the program as the 2nd in command. However this would be a great way to get national attention from ESPN if he were hired as offensive coordinator and associate head coach. After 2-3 years and able to help Rolo resurrect the program this will lead to opportunities at other schools if he so desires to venture off again which may not be a goal for him. If this were to happen it will be a win win situation providing JJ understands his role as 2nd in command and that of being a mentor.

Replacing him or any person by that time should not be a problem to the program because just listening to Rolo his vision is to build a strong foundation. The program continued success will be the foundation built by many people who understands Hawaii and loves its culture. Though changes in personnel will happen this will not lead the program to fall due to its strong foundation.

  50. nomu December 6, 2015 4:08 pm

As it shapes up, looks like Rolovich was the right one for UH Football. Looks like we may get a lot of fans back in the stands for next year. Does anyone feel we also need an associate head coach? For one person to handle the pressure and workload of rebuilding this program, seems like a big ask.

  51. kapakahi December 6, 2015 4:17 pm

    #42,

    Too much off-the-field baggage.

  52. Not an Expert December 6, 2015 4:36 pm

Speaking of strong foundations, all coaches and programs should define how their program will be bigger than its people. Yet not disrespecting any one individual. Thus when a HC leaves he becomes replaceable by someone new that will be able to continue working with this foundation and its culture with continued success. Bottom line people working together for a common cause and not their personal agenda. Harder to do than spoken.

  53. Legislature December 6, 2015 4:58 pm

Frank Delima as OC and Mel Cabang as DC
QB coach Andy Bumatai DL coach Auggie T

    RE: #37
azwarrior22 — I think the dream combo would be JJ as OC/QB Coach, McMackin as DC, and Glanville as Special Teams.
Special teams would be very interesting to watch. 😯
    Defense would be solid.
    No QB controversy…

  56. Frannyk December 6, 2015 5:19 pm

With all this great talk about our NEW coach, possibilities of NEW asst. coaches and NEW recruits, can we have a NEW ANNOUNCER for football.

Kekaula is terrible! Especially when he slows down his phrasing to make an emphatic point. UGH!!!

Kanoa is already doing Wahine Volleyball and Men’s Basketball….. Isn’t it time to put him in the announcers booth as play by play for football now? Just switch him and Kekaula on game day. Pleeeeeeease OC16 Pleeeeeeeease?????

  57. A-House December 6, 2015 6:53 pm

I don’t recall which school Timoteo is looking at in the PAC12. but MasaBoy mentioned that the QB and starting receivers and RB all played as Frosh and all did well

What’s the probability of Timoteo breaking into that rotation? slim to NONE?

hope all local prospects don’t think they will be the next Mariota – he had special skills and the heart to become a Heisman winner – maybe for Hawaii, a once in a life time occurrence — in all my years following local foot ball, NONE have come close to his accomplishments in college

  66. David J. December 6, 2015 8:32 pm

You’re all crazies! All the pick you had only will be right for the team!. It’s Chris Brown bring him back to Hawaii. He really great with young players coming out from high school. But the honest truth let Nike make his own decisions to make his own coaching staff!..

  67. UH4eva December 6, 2015 9:01 pm

#56 I cound not agree with you more. Kekaula is the most irritating announcer I ever heard. It is embarrassing when he speaks and tries to make point! He also slams many parts of the country and does not show any aloha. Does not have to Rolo aloha spirit. Yes phrasing to make his point is bush league.

  68. z December 6, 2015 9:12 pm

Saw on the news soccer organization never inspected the field before scheduling the game. It appears soccer players prefer grass and have been complaining to the organization. At practice the soccer players felt the the condition of the field was not good enough. Sad for fans.

  75. kimo browner December 6, 2015 10:52 pm

The only two proven D1A coaches you named in context but not as prospective coaches are Adrian Klemm and Jeff Ulbrich. Both have been coaching or have recruiting hops. They both have recently hit speed bumps but are quality coaches. The only one you mentioned with no coaching experience in college that is worth the risk is Nasty Nate. Although he has not been coaching on the college level he could coach RBs and learn recruiting on the fly. Ilaoa was not the perfect boy scout as a warrior but he produced at game time. I do not believe any player Nate coaches can pull the wool over him. He has seen it all and done it too. Lol. He would be a players coach. Likeable guy.
Ash Lelie would be another candidate. He knows the system and has been active as a college coach. I rem Ron Lee pulling his hair bc ASH once ran a wrong route in a tight game only to catch a long distant throw straight down the mauka sideline and run the distance to the North endzone. His catch-TD broke the game wide open. Stuz is another former warrior player that has been paying his dues as an apprentice while honing his skills across the country. His road was not all smooth out of the gate but Craig stuck it out and is flashing success. Look, good coaching doesnt always come from big brand schools. But good coaches do show success, no matter what level. Think of Chip Kelly, New Hampshire-Oregon-Philadelphia. To name one. There are many.

  76. Stephen Tsai December 6, 2015 11:14 pm

This isn’t the dream team. Nobody is leaving UNLV for $90,000 a year. There’s a set amount of money. Somebody sent me a link from Facebook from a grumbling idiot saying UH should go big. People are always generous with other people’s money. There is no money.

  77. Bowwar December 6, 2015 11:27 pm

ST: Sadly you’re correct…Talk is cheap and folks in Hawaii don’t back up their talk with financial support. You’re right, there isn’t any money and whomever accepting coaching positions will have to look at the humble salary and determine whether this is a “one time fling” to move to greener pastures or just be thankful to be in Hawaii. As much as I don’t like Miano, I think he becomes a “viable” candidate because he has roots in Hawaii and coaching isn’t his sole source of income. Cal Lee needs another year to qualify for State pension, so he might also be a good candidate. And yes, we could even bring old George Lumpkin back to act as a “fatherly figure” to the young kids. He did do a good job with logistics for the team travel, etc. I like bringing Stutzman and Brian Smith back if they don’t mind the salary. I think Lelie may have burnt his bridge in Nevada, but I could be wrong. I’d like Mack to come back as DC, just because he’s a “nice guy” and UH treated him so badly IMHO…

  78. z December 6, 2015 11:43 pm

Just wondering how JJ would do as a DC.

  79. Da Punchbowl Kid December 7, 2015 1:19 am

Excellent field of candidates. My favorite choices are Stutz and Ilaoa, but the rest are quality folks too. Like Rolo, they are part of UH’s JJ legacy, and know what success looks and feels like from a Warrior perspective. I hope JJ is on the sideline somewhere.

Wishing, wanting, and what we can afford is the biggest issue here.

  80. seewhy December 7, 2015 4:10 am

  81. kapakahi December 7, 2015 4:34 am

    #78,

Mack is all done with coaching…….at least @ UH……for the all same off-the field reasons/issues that he “resigned” after the 2011 season.

  82. kapakahi December 7, 2015 4:46 am

    #77,

Atuaia was interested before…….and might be again……especially with the uncertainty of who will be the next HC @ BYU…….even if the new HC is promoted from the current staff……like what’s going on with the USC coaching staff……where former assistant and now new HC Clay Helton let go all but one of the defensive assistant coaches after the Stanford loss.

Gotta believe that TC is interested.

  83. kapakahi December 7, 2015 4:49 am

  84. kapakahi December 7, 2015 5:03 am

The soccer organization did inspect/approved the playing field surface beforehand…….but not the women’s team players themselves…….therefore the player boycott & game cancellation.

  85. letsgowarriors December 7, 2015 5:43 am

my choice for OC is still Tim Cramsey if no P5 teams pick him up

    Aloha Kakahiaka!
    It’s a new day!

  87. dopaco24 December 7, 2015 7:11 am

    Al #63,

A soccer pitch is around 120 yards in length, often shorter. A football field is 120 yards(100 yard field + two 10 yard end zones.) The stadium has removable panels on the field both at the 50 yard line and the end zones(there may be more). Look up MetLife stadium, which is where the Jets and Giants play. Aloha Stadium has the same turf system. The problem with the system at Aloha Stadium is that the replacement panels(they replaced the HAWAII end zones and the H logo) are uneven due to the wear of the rest of the field. It is so bad that the turf on the replacement panels sits up almost an inch higher than the rest of the field. In addition the stadium crews did a poor job of connecting the panels to the rest of the field.

  88. letsgowarriors December 7, 2015 7:11 am
