  4. Southbay September 28, 2009 5:25 am

Aren’t they practicing at the HS with a big population of Polys that do the haka?

  5. Stephen Tsai September 28, 2009 5:26 am

    Quite true, Southbay.
    So that’s good for recruiting.
    Still …

Any chance of the Hawaii Media getting together with the Dallas Punter?

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

Have fun at the game tonight. Root for da odda team. 🙂

    Morning d1, ST.

  12. Garret September 28, 2009 6:02 am

Mac chose to have UH practice at Euless Trinity because of recruiting purposes. A football from Trinity already posted in SportsHawaii several days ago how excited he was to hear that UH would be practicing at their school (he heard from their football coach).

Trinity is the school that I posted on this blog about last season that has a *huge* Polynesian population and has a LOT of D-IA athletes that have some ties to Hawaii. The last time I checked the standings they were the #1 rated high school team in their area.

Recruiting trumps all other reasons for practice locations, in my opinion.

  13. bighilofan2 September 28, 2009 6:03 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    dragged this over.

    ST ST

    ST ST

Bradley and Hopkins, any chance of a report from their families while you’re in Dallas? Navarro’s a short hop down the road, Marlin a little more. they chose to become Warriors, represent US, Warrior Nation. I wonder how their moms feel about their sons’ choices to play for Hawaii.

let the moms know we are proud of them and glad they play for us.

  14. d1島 September 28, 2009 6:04 am

    Hi jmxxxx!

    Garret,

    Howzit.
Good point about the practice location.

  15. Garret September 28, 2009 6:04 am

According to the Euless Trinity football player, UH will be practicing from 6-9pm tonight and having a walkthrough Tuesday morning.

I’m glad that UH is practicing at night in Dallas–I remember the practices at Palo Verde were early in the morning when the UNLV game had an 8pm kickoff. It is good to be able to practice later in the day sometimes…especially on the road when class schedules do not have to be checked.

  16. d1島 September 28, 2009 6:05 am

    Hi bhf2!

    Have a terrific day erryboddy!

    HiHo…

  17. Garret September 28, 2009 6:08 am

The fact that ST reports that UH has the right to practice at SMU if it rains makes it clear that UH *chose* to practice at Trinity instead of SMU.

Practicing in front of a high school team loaded with D-IA athletes that are almost all Polynesian and do the haka before games is pretty ideal.

  18. Garret September 28, 2009 6:09 am

Q&A with Mac in The News-Star.

On how Alexander differs from Colt Brennan, who led the Warriors to the Sugar Bowl in 2007:

McMackin: Colt, he could run around, and Greg will run around north and south, but he’s got a stronger arm. He’s bigger type of guy — a 6-4, 6-5 type of guy. But I don’t know if we’ll ever have another Colt Brennan. But he’s running the offense really well, and he’s a tough guy so he’s a good leader. I have a lot of respect for him.

  19. djmitcho September 28, 2009 6:13 am

Good morning Tsaikos! Hope everyone can get through the grind of another Monday. Only 2 days til Warrior Football though…should make it a little easier.

  20. Garret September 28, 2009 6:14 am

I’ve been following Euless Trinity ever since I started posting about them last year. They have a *lot* of D-IA prospects this year and are loaded every year with great football players. The BCS schools are all over that school and will take some of their recruits, but they have a lot of other recruits there…and UH has a better shot there than in many other places to beat out BCS schools for recruits due to the Poly connections with Hawaii.

I stopped posting about Trinity after awhile because I never heard of UH recruiting a player there, so I figured there was no point to bring up the great recruiting opportunity it seemed UH would have there. However, choosing to practice there could have a BIG impact on opening a pipeline between Trinity and UH.

  21. A-House September 28, 2009 6:16 am

    Garret:

Gotta agree with your #12 post about the possible recruiting benefits for UH.

Also, gotta agree with BHF2 about certain “media” personnel making contact with families of Hopkins and Bradley and letting them know how UH fans feel about their sons. I believe it would be a “BIGGER” impact if a certain blog host initiated the contact.

Maybe, just maybe, the Warriors will “practice” their haka for Euless Trinity football players and all others who chose to attend the practices.
And, possibly, Euless Trinity respond in kind by doing their haka or joining the Warriors. That would be an awesome sight.

  22. NYUH September 28, 2009 6:17 am

Just checked the map again. LT sure is a long way from Hawaii. It’s not even in the West. We should be getting a $1 million to go there. Of course a win on Wed ESPN could be worth just as much.

  23. bighilofan2 September 28, 2009 6:25 am

a win on ESPN would be worth more than a million.

specialty is Mana bangin with his A game and intercepting 2x.

and Tank dialing his lazers onto da WR.

and Lou going like “WOW.” 😀

  24. Garret September 28, 2009 6:25 am

    NYUH,

If UH complains about going to LT, then LT will complain about going to UH…and the rest of the WAC will complain about going to both school.

Good timing with the practice tonight. Same as the kickoff-gametime.

Great idea to practice at Trinity instead of SMU. Though, if our Warriors caught a glimpse of smu’s workout room, there would be too many distractions.

    Is it Wednesday yet?
Blaze-A-Saurus and team gonna rock that house in front of America the beautiful LIVE!

The Texas pipeline is a blue chip for Hawaii that hopefully remains intact, and continues to evolve for the best.
Other WAC teams are catching on.

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Imagine what the Polynesian players at Euless Trinity will be thinking when they see the Warriors practicing there. It must be like looking at the mother land for those kids. In addition to the recruiting benefits, the cultural and social boost given to the students is a very positive thing IMHO.

  52. Da Punchbowl Kid September 28, 2009 7:46 am

  55. Coach Ricecake September 28, 2009 8:02 am

Finally seeing some smart coaching by Coach Mack. Having the players practicing at night not only has them adjusting their body clocks to the game time Wednesday night. But it also simulates the game like conditions, too.

sorry, warriors defense is a mere speed bump even with an underachieving LTU running game. Good to see John and Paipai back and while they are game their wheels arent at 85%. Alexander is hot but you cant score if you arent on the field…..this is going to be a loooong season.
Bulldogs beat the spread and a beatup Hawaii team.
    LTU 28-HAW 24.

  62. huh September 28, 2009 8:41 am

Hawaii’s coaching staff has known about Trinity HS since it broke in an article in the spring of 2007 and on the Hawaiian websites including this one. Dan Morrison originally was assigned to make contact by JJ but the warriors have not scored. If my memory serves me correctly, most of the polynesian players are part of a Tongan community of approximately 4000 that sprung from families working at the local AP. Some of the Trinity bluechippers have expressed interest in Hawaii but have opted for higher BCS profile teams in the area or across the nation.

  63. Old Diver September 28, 2009 8:43 am

    Regarding # 61

I believe we get the ball back if and when La Tech scores. Can’t run the ball if you are behind by a lot, and that is the plan.

  67. BowsForever September 28, 2009 9:18 am

La Tech might run a whole bunch but that play-action pass will get you if you’re not careful. For now, I think red-zone efficiency and pure scoring output is still the best way for the Warriors to win Wednesday’s game. It certainly seems the easier place to improve, anyway…it’s a matter of reads, progressions, holding on the ball, etc.

  68. BowsForever September 28, 2009 9:20 am

IMHO, GA’s QB rating doesn’t match up with his on-field performance just yet. The bright side is if he can step up his game, key stats like accuracy could easily hover in the 70%/Colt Brennan range.

  69. (Jesse) James September 28, 2009 9:29 am

  71. BowsForever September 28, 2009 10:02 am

I wonder, is Colt the QB of the future for the Redskins, or should he try and get himself on another team before it’s too late? IIRC he’s contracted for 4 years, but that Lions loss looked…er…bad.

  72. d1島 September 28, 2009 10:07 am

    Stretch,

In a crowd of 100k+ that parking pass may be worth more than the actual tickets!

  73. d1島 September 28, 2009 10:08 am

    BF,

IIRC Colt is on a 5-yr contract.

  74. Derek September 28, 2009 10:45 am

    Monday Maybes:
    1) The best way to beat La Tech is to score everytime we get the ball, and I don’t mean field goals. UH has to score a touchdown first and keep piling on the points. I feel UH can move the ball throwing it since Auburn, Navy, and Nichols State aren’t exactly passing teams (La Tech first opponents). We just have to made big plays and not turn the ball over. On defense, we have to get some stops, either fumbles or interceptions. Otherwise, our defense will get worn out.
    2) Good recruiting tool to go to the a Texas high school to practice. Start getting a pipeline going.
    3) I have a feeling Jim Zorn might be out soon, especialy if they lose to hopeless Tampa Bay this weekend. Then, what is Colt Brennan’s fate will be for the future?
    4) Going to play a WAC game to La Tech still doesn’t make sense to me.
There is no rhyme or reason geographically to go that far to play a confrence game. The same for La Tech. They shouldn’t come all the way to Hawaii either. Also, the cost? And the time traveling and time zoens? I say Hawaii try to get out of the WAC. Hawaii should get together w/ Boise State, Nevada, and Fresno State and try to get in a new formed Mountain West w/ 12 teams and 2 divisions. One division would be these 4 teams, plus San Diego State and UNLV. The other divison would be Utah, BYU, TCU, Wyoming, Colorado State, Air Force, and New Mexico. You can call the new conference Mountain West 12 and it can be another BCS conference. Think about it. That would be a pretty strong conference. And, teams coming to Hawaii can play a 13th game and get another home game to increase their revenues. The 2 division winners play for the conference title and the winner gets an automatic BCS bid. Simple. To me, it makes a lot of sense.
    4) 49ers were robbed yesterday. No matter, they will win the weak NFC West and make the playoffs. I believe in Singletary.

Report states that Chad Pennington is out for the *season* with a shoulder injury. Hopefully Bess will not have his stats drop due to a more ground-oriented offense under Henne…Bess is in a contract year and can use all of the receptions he can get.

ESPN is reporting that Miami Dolphins starting quarterback Chad Pennington is out for the season.

Pennington has been diagnosed with a torn capsule in his right shoulder, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting.

  78. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) September 28, 2009 11:19 am

I have to believe that Colt will be successful on ANY team – but without being disrespectful to the incumbent QB, Colt’s chemistry with the Redskins players is a strength and I am praying that what I see is actually happening- Colt is still in the right place at the right time and in the right condition…
Ke Akua is watching over him. His time will come.

  83. warriorfanny2 September 28, 2009 11:24 am

You can match Alexander’s last two games with anyone of CBs–Greg is on the mark and currently #1 in PE nationally……especially when you consider he throws more deep balls, has 2 new receivers, a non-exsistent running game and a maligned OL that has been coached by four OL coaches in the last 5 years. He is putting up more run yards too.
I also believe Kealoha Pilares and Greg Salas rank with Bess and RGM and Salas maybe the best slot ever, right up there with DB and Mighty Mouse. He certainly has the best hands of the three and runs the best routes. His YAC is better than DB and quite frankly, Owens had moves that were difficult to follow yet diagram for another to replicate, but GS can romp and doesnt look to go out-of-bounds like Bess frequently did…
Alexander’s last 2 games is reminiscent of Rolo’s streak to end his career in 2001 when he lit up the board with 176 points in the last three games against Miami (OH), AFA and BYU.
Alexander is doing his thing with an outstanding receiver corp. If staff use Green more at RB and he learns the system our O may keep this team in a position to win in the 4th Q. A lot depends on continued OL improvement and the ability of OL-backups like Adrian Thomas to step up and fill the breach.
Speaking of Thomas, he may have the highest OL-IQ and I’m hoping he has learned to dance with his two left-feet…..best wishes to the Aussie—all the eyes n roos in Bangor, NSW Australia will be watching….:)

Hope the team stays healthy on the road. It’s got to be very taxing on their immune systems with the different climates and almost 8,000 miles of air travel the past few weeks.

Saw RainbowCliff earlier today. He wanted to thank all of the Tsaikos for their support during a very dark time. It was great too see that beaming smile and hear that booming voice once again. He is a true WARRIOR. Everything is going well for him and his family.

A lot of questions need to be answered with regards to LaTech…

They were supposed to be the BEST team we’re gonna face up to this point. We said and felt the same about UNLV, but really we had them beat at several points, but missed opportunities were the end result.

LaTech was supposed to have an established run game, yet against Auburn and Navy, they threw the ball for the most part and HB Daniel Porter is only averaging 3.3 yards per carry. LaTech, through their stats, doesn’t seem like a team that forces others to punt very often. They are tops in punt returns but bad at kick returns. But then considering the opportunities they had in all of three games, who knows???

Our defensive tackles will have to play on top of their heads in this game and our redzone play must connect on offense.

Originally I thought this game was going to be a killer for us a while back, now, not so much.

  89. koakane™ September 28, 2009 12:36 pm

good day tsaiko nation and warrior fans, have a good one and like I always say play nice and be good to your co-workers

I think derek makes some good points

Simple. To me, it makes a lot of sense.

pp, stretch and st have a good mnf entertainment viewing the game. know of one person who is whishing she was there.

In 1976, I attended a Cowboys game at Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas. Parking was $8 for a mile away, which I thought was ridiculous. Two end zone seats were about $25 each, available day of the game at the stadium box office.

Roger Staubach, Drew Pearson, Too Tall Jones, Randy White and Company against the Baltimore Colts with Bert Jones and Lydell Mitchell.

The lead changed hands 4 times in the final quarter before Staubach pulled it out with a last minute drive.

  102. Buffoman September 28, 2009 1:46 pm

I think Derek has some good point. Madesome of ’em myself a while back with the alignment of the schools.

Problem is simple, money. Not greed so much as dollars to be in a conference. The reason why MWC will not trade out a poor performing school like SDSU for a Hawaii is basic economics. Cost more to get here than going to SD. Same for Wyoming or CSU.

That being said, I think that coaching in Hawaii is the toughest job around. Each has to win. Has to. The reason is that perceived value through association has to be there or what would entice people to bank Hawaii. Simply put, it cost too much to send teams here to compete in a conference schedule.

So, good idea, but we really need to create that Boise State aura about our football team or we become more vulnerable. There has to be perceived value to having the Warriors in the conference, bottom line.

  104. Manoa September 28, 2009 2:23 pm

#96 Wafan, and others, Euless Trinity started out doing a Maori Haka, but Tongan elders objected. As was pointed out, there is a large Tongan population employed at Dallas Fort Worth Airport (American Airlines, I think). They came up with a Tongan haka which blended the Tongan language, Tongan culture, and Texas football culture, by using football quotes the Trinity coach used to inspire and teach his players translated into Tongan– unique.

SMU has some ties to the Tongan population in the area not because of football, but because many Tongans are members of the Tongan Methodist Church which is influential in many Tongan communities (including in Hawaii– the Tongan Methodist Church is on Flamingo Road in Waimanalo).

    Re: #74,

Yes, there is no rhyme or reason to flying so far for conference games every year. The cost, time traveling, time zones aren’t really selling points.

In fact, the above factors along with the prospect of a 12 team conference with 2 divisions is what caused some teams to leave the WAC some years ago and form their own conference…

Any talk of the MWC accepting Hawaii without mentioning this is meaningless and lacks any historical context.

    Re: #83,

Saying “you can match Alexander’s last two games with anyone of CBs” and also comparing them with the end of Rolo’s career is a bold statment. I agree with giving Alexander a lot of credit and certainly more than many people have been giving him. It seems the bold statement may have been more to get people’s attention in an attempt to “educate them” or to bait a response but I’m sure you’re aware that it’s really a reach.

While he has done very well during 2 early road games and led the offense to average 32 points / game against Wazzu and UNLV, this isn’t close to Rolo getting 500+ yards in 3 consecutive games while leading the team to average 60 points / game against Miami (Ohio), Air Force and a top 10 undefeated BYU.

Comparing his last 2 games to ONE of Colt’s is an oddly open and carefully worded statement and is a good way for you to get people to open their minds a little (not that it’s needed as much on here as it is on some other places). It will be fun to see the team develop further as the year goes on.

After the offense sputtered in the first game against a good Div1AA C. Arkansas, they have proven to be deadly when GA has time to throw in the last 2 games (against limited opposition). As is well known, the OL is a MAJOR component in any offense and it’s comforting to know Hawaii has someone of Gordy Shaw’s pedigree and experience to guide them. They will need to show the ability to be deadly in all situations over the entire season but they have clearly shown a lot of potential and have some big weapons.

Rainbow Wahine remain #4 in the AVCA poll. No other moves in the Top 4.

If this was football we’d drop to #30 as soon as we got into WAC play, but then again in women’s collegiate volleyball they determine who’s truly the best by actual play on the game court.

Actually Dan Kelly’s blog remarks were OK in my mind – just stating his leaving Hawaii as a family thing. His relationship with Coach Mac may be one of those personal family situation vs. a head coach’s concern of not losing a scholarship because someone is leaving the program without graduating.

Lets remember that Dan Kelly contributed to our undefeated season in 2007 and leave it at that. Young guy is growing up. lets leave him alone with the good memories from the past.

Coach Mack needs our support now. He is with us. He’s doing good.

Report from the Euless Trinity football player that has been posting to SportsHawaii:

so having the warriors practice at trinity was pretty awesome!
what i noticed is that Greg and Bradley praticed on that holeshot route (where Bradley was open most the time in the UNLV game) a couple of times
Salas didn’t drop one pass when i was watching but Bradley dropped like 2 or 3 times

    Didn’t really watch the defense

One of the coaches tried to recruit my friend Na’a…he’s a pretty good linebacker, we got some poly players here at trinity and i think hawaii can snag a few…as for the skill guys…idk JJ might pick them up…but then again JJ might pick all of them up haha oh well we shall see

they pratice sometime tomorrow and i want to go watch…i think its like 9 in the morning…idk gotta check…might be early so imma go to school at around 7 and if they don’t and pratice at 9 then i just might skip first period :-$

on a side note…i had no idea Liz Chun was so short…i taught she was about 5’5” 😆

Fresno State has a bye week this week so they have *2* weeks to prepare for UH. Thank you Karl Benson.

Fresno State’s football team will have an opportunity to rest during this bye week, and also a chance to study its next opponent.

“He’s a big presence in the pocket,” Dooley said of Alexander. “He’s got a very good arm and he’s making the accurate throws and he’s staying in there waiting for guys to get down the field and he has exceptional wide receivers around him. They really got it rolling. It’s going to be a big challenge for our defense.”

It turns out that hiding the bomb inside of the body makes it invisible to airport metal detectors, making them “useless.” The bomb created a crater in the ground below the suicide bomber which means that it isn’t great for assassination attempts…but it could destroy an airplane in flight.

Fitting and not surprising. But can’t really blame the Kaiser on this one…

Of future concern is the officiating staff for the home game against Boise State. Barring oddball happenings from now until we meet BSU at Aloha Stadium, no doubt Benson’s interest lies in seeing that BSU maintain their undefeated status at no cost.

Enough with this “rah rah for our fellow conference” non-sense, in dollars and cents it makes sense but in the whole scope of things, it really does us NO favors to see another lopsided game with reference to penalties.

The road game in Fresno State was a good example. FSU was undefeated at the time and ranked and the WAC did NOT benefit from our upset over them last season… The amount of penalties and the “acting” by their kicker in that game was all I needed to see…

BSU is a good enough team to go undefeated and should we lose that game, let it be because of BSU and not because of some sly wheeling and dealing…

But just to be sure… the schedule we’ve got to start the conference season does NOT work in our favor.

Thanks for the memories Dan Kelly. But no matter what the circumstances, you shouldn’t have been in a conflict with and disrespecting the coach. That kind of stuff will really hurt you in the work place (when you get there). All of us old-timers probably have stories where we stuck our foot in our big fat mouthes. Our very best to you.

    Regarding #184

I remember when my son was participating in his first judo match in high school having never taken judo before. He came to me and said his team mates told him his opponent was experienced and good. I told him he was good also and just play to his strengths. Needless to say he dominated his opponent to the point that after the match his opponent was crying to his coach. Well, Boise is good, but so are we. I expect to win each game we play starting with La Tech, because we are good enough. If Boise goes without a penalty though I will be singing your tune.

evening to all much going on tonight

think al is correct about stretch being over. many has donated sending in a check instead of using a cc. but no matter main thing give its for a good cause.

mac should also look for a sticker which takes a local flavor like a sm shaka, a sm H stretche’s design good) or something to put on the helmet. years back someone designed a shirt that the defense got when they intercepted a ball. it said ‘Aihue you wouldn’t understand it a WAC thing’

  202. koakane™ September 28, 2009 10:40 pm

    bulla, good job. 😀

Curt, agree with you. the shirts, all the icicles. i try to forget those things, and remember the positive memories that young man gave me.

all of us got a ying, and a yang. All of us contributed toward D K’s headspace. including DK. i’ve never written about him, but da tones ah da blogs overall went down in ’08. prolly had sumtin to do wit da Mrs.

i’m guessing, but i’m prolly correct, dat da guy who thinks Coach Mack wears pink panties is habut about sumtin dat got nuttin to do wit dis year’s team. personal beef wit da coach. why don’t you tell us wats really on your mind instead of hemmin an hawin, get to da point. you’re setting a bad example for da young man. you’re also setting a bad example by not manning up and using a fixed handle. jmo.
pretty soon, you goin incite a “yawn.”

  208. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc September 29, 2009 12:44 am

Just checked Stretch’s webpage – as of this moment, he’s $110 over his goal and has reached his personal challenge. The other personal challenge for the same fund by another Tsai-ko is $890 away away.

Re the proposed fund-raiser mentioned a few days ago: Is there any interest from Tsai-kos on planning & putting on a two-part fund-raiser – one for people who live here and are able to take part and the other for people who don’t and/or can’t – to send the some of the Pep Band and some of the cheer-leading squad to the San Jose State game on November 21?

If you’d like to learn more, please send an e-mail to swood at hoku dot com by Wednesday evening, September 30.

Meanwhile, start saving your HI-5 cans & bottles to bring to the next T-Gate on Saturday, October 10. The beneficiary this time is the Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s SAVE OUR SPORTS Drive.

day yu go. Soares gonna be mayor. Funaki coujld be coach. 😀
