We all know that coach, the after-the-facter who scolds a player for making a mistake that he was not warned in advance about not making.
State lawmakers have become that coach.
It appears this is the scenario: UH goofs, then lawmakers sift through news reports, read the outraged comments sections, then summon UH officials for a public — and long-winded — scolding.
And then everybody feels good about themselves, well, except for the ones who lost their jobs for making the errors.
But if lawmakers were to haul in everyone to explain mistakes, there would be nothing but informational briefings. Homeless, falling test scores, the traffic jams at the H-1/H-2 merge and Punahou exit …
And what happens from these public scoldings other than don’t-do-that-again warnings?
Perhaps how-to-prevent sessions and clear action-penalty rules would be a better use of time. UH mistakes do cost taxpayers money, but informational hearings cost taxpayers money and time.
UH will never have another Wonder Blunder. UH also will never have another concert, which is part of how it lost the Bruno Mars concerts to the Blaisdell. And UH might not ever have a Gib-clause contract, but it also will continue to have a lag in signing new contracts.

i’m actually very curious about this statement, because i remember reading somewhere a while ago that the graduation rate for UH football at the time was around 40%, but i can’t find that information anymore. does anyone have UH’s graduation rate over the three years of norm chow’s head coaching tenure?
also, regarding ST’s blog post: yeah, the public scoldings probably dont’ do much, but it’s great theatre. and it makes the legislature seem like they actually care about UH in general.
The only thing happening this week is there’s a football game.
Davis will play this week. He had a shoulder issue entering the last game.
I also think there at that point where they’re not going to blow anyone’s redshirt season just for four or five games.

@#4 Come on, Man! A little research at the NCAA site reveals that UH team in 2012-2013 was ranked #85 of 245 schools for their Academic Progress Report with a score of 962. Similarly, for 2013-2014 the APR score was 966. You can just imagine how many schools fell below UH in academic progress and graduation rate.
1. Isn’t there a law school with attorneys on campus who could help review some of this sh-tuff?
2. Finding the next coach should be easy. Follow the blue prints used by Texas, Miami, Nebraska, USC (So. Cal and So. Car.), Oregon State… With our resources, easy.
3. I can only assume the “redshirts” are not playing because they are not as good as the starters. So we should be optimistic?
The only successful concert that the University of Hawaii ever staged for a nationally recognized performer in the rock/pop genre was Bob Dylan at the Andrews Amphitheater.
Leeward Community College has a better track record.

Could not agree more. Donna Mercado Kim is great grand stander. But where are her hearings into wasted dollars within the state that dwarf coaches’ payouts. Obviously the legal person assigned to document review misunderstood the clause and missed it. Who got fired, removed etc is protected information. Maybe Donna wants that info so those individuals could sue. Can you say irony? If leg wants to help pass a bill removing all coaches from HGEA. I doubt that any other institution has their coaches under a collective bargaining unit. UH needs to manage their business more professionally and legislature needs to do their homework on value (costs/benefits) of intercollegiate athletics. No one needs more side shows. Everyone needs to focus on what they can do to make UH a model of professionally managed athletic department. Get it right the first time and work together to move the needle in the right direction. Enough with the sound bites and photo ops.
On Saturday, I met a woman who attends UH sports events, including football, volleyball, and basketball.
I asked her if she reads the Warrior Beat.
She said, “No, because it is so negative.”
Just read this mornings article on team is fired up.
I mean, I get it Lance Williams is a leader, the coaches talk him up, he’s always saying the right thing. But at some point, he needs to start backing his talk up a little on the field. On the onside kick, he literally did nothing when the ball was bouncing towards him. Almost like he backed and was scared to collide with the kicker. If he wants it so bad, go get the damn ball. I’d prefer a player giving a pep talk that is going to out and make a play like Gener. He lays everything out there.

#11, Agree, been watching his play closely, him and Benny Fonua are guys who make a lot of tackles BUT it’s always 6 to 10 yards down the field. All people see is the amount of tackles they make, I see all those yards they give up before the tackle. I’m sure we got better on the bench.
Direct your criticism/frustration/hatred toward the coaching staff, and lay off the student-athletes. Let’s keep it civil.
Maybe the instructions to the team before the onside kick were not good enought. Like when can our team go for the ball. Is that legal for the kicker to be running alongside the ball he kicked ?

I think UH’s legal arm is in much better hands with Okinaga. One of the sharpest attorney’s I’ve had the chance to work with. UH should expect more out of its general counsel and now I think they will get more.
On that famous on-side kick at Reno; why didn’t the coaches put in an all-hands team (like WR’s or DB’s) on the front line assuming they knew it was coming (the whole stadium did) instead of LB’s? And instruct them to get that damn ball or blow people up trying to field it?

21…It was obvious that the special teams players on that on-side kick didn’t know the rules for recovering the ball. They waited for the ball to go ten yards before they made an attempt to go get it. Bad on the coaches for not teaching them that they could touch/recover the ball at anytime after the kick. In other words “go get the ball” and not wait for it to get to you. I’m not blaming Williams for that, he was doing actually what he was told to do. It’s on the coaches to teach it and remind them of them during that time out. It’s obvious they never practiced it with that group of guys that was out there and just threw a bunch of guys of there.
Two people lost jobs — a legal guy and the AD.

Clyde…They are big boys and have heard worst from their coaches. I’m pretty sure they have heard it all before. Consider it construction criticism, not more, nothing less.
SA coverage of the hearing (not under our host’s byline) hinted that buyout/payoff costs for assistants would be different before and as of Jan. 1, 2016. The implication was these other costs would be higher if the head coach is terminated this calendar year, but that wasn’t spelled out and no details were mentioned.

the players play , the coaches coach–mostly everyone (tries) to do their jobs , right! If you gotta get on somebody , put the blame on The Administration (UH). A lot of people (fans , etc.) talk about the failures (lack of proper game prep , time manage- ment , etc.etc.etc.) but who , is really in charge? What is being done about it? Why does the administration continuosly screw-up (maybe the State should fire everyone from Director , UP – not the coaching staffs)! example of past blunders is not , on a timely basis , renewing the contract of a coach who orchestrated the biggest football turnaround and took us to the SugarBowl (#4 million dollar payout)-WHATZ UP?

I definitely blame the coaches. But also on the player not to back off from contact. This is remedial stuff were talking about.

I’ve been saying a while that UH should hold some EDM concerts at the Stan Sherriff. Blaisdell no longer does so shouldn’t be difficult to get them. They will definitely have no problem in selling out and making money

Yes, politicians love grandstanding, but, do they back it up with the money UH needs for its Athletics Department?
Rep. Issac Choy has said previously that UH’s athletic budget should be balanced by line item funding, yet nothing is done toward that end. The politicians show very little knowledge about running a big athletic program while tripping over themselves for camera time to chide UH’s AD over contracts he had nothing to do with.
Dysfunction and the hamstringing of UH Athletics stretches from Aloha Stadium, to the capitol and onto the upper campus at Manoa.
If lawmakers and UH’s administration are sincere in wanting to remedy UH Athletics’ problems, they need to walk the walk. Fix everything. All of the above.

Isaac Choy is the biggest grand stander of all. After Dave Matlin announced that he was using part of the Waterhouse donation to fund partial Cost of Attendance, he got on camera and again “scolded” Matlin, saying why use grant money and what will happen when the grant runs out? Well, what was he do to? His committee and the legislature slashed UH’s budget and refuses to restore that funding. What a hypocrite. Like another blogger said, smooth talker like a slimy politician should. He’s actually not that smooth.
On the one hand, Choy went to San Jose State. On the other hand, he’s a Roosevelt grad.

EDM concerts at UH would be very risky. Lots of drugs and deaths at these types of concerts. That’s the last thing that UH needs at an event hosted at their facility. Not worth the risk in my opinion.

Chow is was and always will be the problem. He cleaned house when he came in and basically has produced the worst losing record in the history of the school. Jones, MacMackin somehow or another produced bowl teams and respectable performances on the field. Was Chow hired so he could learn how to be a head coach at age 70 …….argh?

Occasionally there are posts suggesting using architecture students to design a new stadium or today to use law students to review contracts. This is not a good idea for many reasons:
a) students are not licensed to practice architecture/law
b) students do not have the experience in construction documents or contracts
c) professors are unlikely to oversee student work due to lack of liability insurance and compensation issues
One would not go to a med student for surgery, so why go to an architecture or law student for professional services?

Many moons ago, I sliced my wrist while changing a razor blade in my box cutter. I went to Kaiser Hospital Emergency in Waikiki (yes, that long ago) and was asked if they could have a med student (3rd year) stitch my wound. It looked simple, so I said “okay.” After stitching my wrist, the resident came by and told the student to open it back up so he could check for possible damage to tendons/ligaments etc., so the student removed the stitches, and the resident checked and said “stitch him up.” So the med student stitched my wrist for a second time, and the resident came by and told him to do it again because the stitches were too close to the edge of the “flap of skin.” So the student removed the sutures and stitched me up a third time. A week later, when the bandages were removed in order to take out the sutures, my entire hand, front and back, was black and blue. And so yes, one shouldn’t go to a medical student for surgery, and a law student for contracts, etc.

NotNasti — you remind me of when I got hit by a bat in a 4th of July softball game when I was on the mainland attending a USCG course a few decades ago. My forehead and face was covered with blood and they took me to the base sickbay. After a 20 minute wait, an off-duty doctor was found and strolled in from the festivites–red cheeks and holding a beer can. He squints at me and says I’m going to need a few stitches. “Oooo, can I try Doc?” asks the 3rd class corpsman on duty. Doc finishes his beer and says he better do this one since it is over the eyebrows…I was only slightly less horrified.*
Same thing in the dentist office made my eyes open wider. To this day, I am not sure if those were was just a doctor – assistant humor shtick or not. I guess they ask you in real life. 😐
* back home I showed my doctor the healed area. He said good job and asked if he was a plastic surgeon. I dunno.
Since Mrs. Books is a doc, and I have both seen and heard her stories about med students…whenever I’m at teaching hospital (frequently this is where med students do rotations) and they ask if don’t mind having a med student see me…the answer is an unequivocal–NO.

I agree that the politicians are the root cause of many of UH Football’s challenges. The lack of financial support, low coaches salary cap, non-competitive COA stipends, outdated facilities and the list goes on and on.
Yet, we are the ones that vote the politicians into office. We need to organize ourselves into an influential voting group, similar to how Hawaii’s unions create voting blocks and elect politicians. Elect those that commit to supporting UH Athletics and education.
Got to admire the coach’s and player’s optimism in still shooting for a bowl game. This weekend should be interesting, and perhaps the following week even more interesting.

i’m not really interested in APR. APR is meaningless and a shame. I’m interested in ACTUAL graduation rates. Not an NCAA invented metric that has nothing to do with whether or not players are getting degrees.

Eric Burton played at Andrews? I saw him + the Animals at HIC (Honolulu Inernational Center, now Neal Blaisdell Center). I forgot what year it was, but was a long time ago. Must have been in the 60s. First rock concert I went to. Big screen video and light show. It wasn’t laser in those days, but was fantastic. Showed video of B-52s dropping bombs in Viet Nam. Anti-war movement days. Everyone smoking pakalolo. Actually gave me headache there was so much smoke. Best song – The House of the Rising Sun.
The point being missed here is the money used to pay off these blunders is taxpayer money. The legislature is answerable to the public as to how funds are spent. This isn’t the first time UH screwed up and after repeated inquires by the legislature UH is continuing to screw up. So is everyone here suggesting UH should be accountable to no one?

Andrews, Nov ’72. A relative unknown duo (in Hawaii at least) were on tour promoting their first album they had released earlier that month. The show opened with the spotlight on a single guitarist. He played and sang the first verse of a song he had written then the stage lights shone on the whole band who joined him on the song. It was magical. The song was Danny’s Song.

You are absolutely right about the elected officials. I wonder how we can identify and qualify those who will support UH, UH Athletics and education in general?
The other problem is, I am sure you have seen many politicians who promise much in their campaign stage and deliver little while in ofice.

I could think of two ways to promote politicians that will support UH Athletics and higher education in Hawaii.
The first way, similar to the political parties is to hand-select candidates that have a nexus to UH Athletics, like former Representative and current Congressman Mark Takai, a former UH athlete and WAC swimming champion. Those that would have a strong commitment and a successful career in the Legislature.
The second method would be to have an organization, whether it be Na Koa or a newly formed group to meet and poll potential candidates prior to elections in regards to their support of UH Athletics and proposed legislative bills supporting UH Athletics. The organization would endorse those that agree to commit to UH Athletics support. If they fail to deliver on their support, they would lose their endorsement in following elections.
