UH has plans in place to add prospects and to replace those who might de-commit.
Meanwhile, Punahou punter Alexander Trifonovitch’s commitment means:

The average UH sports fan walks into a Satellite City Hall and, while waiting for a loooong time, notices there’s always a window vacated because a worker is doing paperwork. We grumble about the line. We grumble about all the documents we have to bring. We grumble about the vacated window. But we never say: “As taxpayers, we don’t want to pay for Paperwork Person.”
The point is the UH athletic department always grumbles about being broke and fans always grumble about supporting a broke athletic department. But it seems the large amount of financial support is voluntary — ticket purchase, booster-club membership — while the mandatory part (taxes that go to the state, which allocates a portion to UH, which allocates a smaller portion to athletics) is minimal. If you’re paying a UH tuition, which includes a sports activity fee, then that’s a mandatory contribution. But only 1.4 percent of Hawaii’s population pays that fee.
The survey in today’s paper re-emphasizes what is obvious. Sports is entertainment and a business. If you want to support it, go ahead. If you don’t, then don’t support it.

Did anyone hear about Menlo College dropping their NAIA football program over the weekend? There are a bunch of local Hawaii high school players affected by school’s decision to drop football, only; citing travel subsidies as one reason. Menlo had to travel to other states to play plus pay schools to travel to theirs.
Disappointing, no NT to replace Samia and to plug our porous defensive line…

19. Got a feeling Lavaka and one of our OL might get to switch to DL. Elijah Tupai and Dejon Allen were good DL in high school. Dejon is starting on O line so doubt it be him. But wouldn’t be shocked if Tupai moved to DT considering we are pretty deep at guard position. Dejon Allen, Eperone Moananu, Tui Eli, John Waa are all capable guards. Fred Ulu Perry would solidify C if we somehow got him. Agasiva can play tackle or inside.

Just checked the menlo college athletics website and sure enough the board of trustees voted to drop their NAIA football program citing financial issues. Menlo had to pay to travel away and pay travel subsidies to attract other schools to play at menlo. Sounds familiar; UH better take notice. Menlo had rich history of providing another opportunity for our high school kids to play. While not quite division III, there were still quite a bit of local boys from the islands listed on their current roster. So sad. Any of you former menlo college players, care to chime in? Despite being a small school in the palo alto area, menlo college made a name for itself.

24. His recruiting has been bad. The talent on this current class is actually pretty good for once even though we are missing key positions. Just a little too late I think. His first couple recruiting classes were just so bad all around that it’s making it tough for us to be good right now. Whether it’s guys not qualifying or going on missions, we didn’t hit enough key pieces.

Out of 2013 recruiting class, Miller, Polk, Hill, Washington, Kirkwood, Sale, Wily aren’t even on the team. Zwahlen went on mission so he doesn’t join until now. Higdon might be gone and wasn’t really a D1 caliber DB to begin with. It was nice signing Kennedy and Trayvon, but you need to hit on a lot more guys than that.

Don’t be surprised if Drake ends up at Utah St. Klune was the LB coach at Utah St when Drake chose Hawaii over USU. He left Hawaii to be closer to home. He comes from a tight nit family in Utah and is getting married soon.

Those walk ons help but hurt at the same time because of poor recruiting we’re losing what could be quality athletes for average walk ons.

Absolutely.
If Chow didn’t follow the rules to the letter T in the past you can bet that he will in the future, especially in the wake of what is happening to the school’s basketball program facing many rules violation.
The school can ill afford to have 2 programs in hot water because it may induce the NCAA to hand out more severer penalties. (?) So I think it would behoove Chow’s governing of the team this season (and next?) to be squeaky clean.
Chow can’t break, circumvent or overlook any of the rules.
The school’s Chancellor needs to reiterate this to Chow. One black eye is bad enough. Two “may” give the proponents of UH athletics some fuel to have the football program on permanent hiatus.
One area of my personal concern is for Chow not to exceed the NCAA mandated countable 20 hours/4 hours a day of activity (practice, weight lifting, team meetings etc.) his players go thru during the football season. From my observation this may be borderline, especially how I have often seen how the players are getting at least 15-20 minutes of practice time with their position coaches (most notable are the OL and special teams) before and even after practice.
Every stone needs to be overturned…and overturned again…and scrutinized.
Boosters, transcripts, camps, off season compliance, recruiting rules…everything.
Every smudging of the rules in the past, too, need to be under stricter enforcement.
Chow has to be proactive, vigilant and honest at following the rules.
Anything less and another repeat of what is happening to the basketball team happening to the football team will spell doom to the image (public perception, respect) of the school in my opinion. It would get ugly.
For every walk-on that is awarded a scholarship during the season, there’s a recruiting failure that made it happen, except in cases of career ending injuries to scholarship players.
43…we’re allowed to award 25 scholarships per year but stay at the 80 total limit. So if 5 guys sign and Hawaii excepts their LOI’s but don’t make it to campus, that’s 5 scholarships that they can award to walk-ons or transfers provided they don’t go over the 80 limit. Make sense now?
45. You do realize that walk ons are awarded scholarships at every school right? And it does not affect the initial scholarship recruiting class unless it is awarded within 1st 2 years. So if a walk on comes to Hawaii, gets awarded a scholarship his junior year, it affects nothing. 45. Makes sense to me. Hawaii’s walk on policy is their plan C for recruiting. So we have 25 guys sign their LOI’s and are promised scholarships but only 20 make it into school. That’s 5 scholarship that Hawaii uses to award to 5 prior walk ons if they don’t put Hawaii over the 80 mark. Like you said if it’s with in the first two years it counts against the initial 25 per year. If they had done the proper homework they players with bad grades or can’t make the SAT scores like Holmes would never been offered scholarships. If he signs and don’t make the grades, which will happen, that’s one scholarship that a average walk on will end up getting.

2. Do walk ons hurt our recruiting? No. Walk ons aren’t promised anything. If a walk on decides to come here, is good, and can help the football team, then its a bonus.
I’ll repeat it again. Bryant Moniz, Chad Owens, Ashley Lelie, Royce Pollard, James Fenderson, Lono Manners, Reggie Torres, Shane Austin, Britton Komine, Steele Jantz, and I’m sure there are more don’t hurt the team. These guys are bonuses. If we offered every kid we thought was the next Owens, we’d be in bad shape. Sometimes you just get lucky.
Yes, Hawaii needs to recruit and evaluate a lot better. But lets not hate on walk ons because there is no correlation there.
I said most kids you are serious about offering, is followed up with a visit. Verbal offers in the fall mean absolutely nothing these days. Go search the databases. 49. Walk ons hurt your recruiting when they are relied upon to be your Plan C. Nothing against walk ons, I see the needs for them but if they are your plan C, then you’re in trouble.
54. Tell that to the former recruit (Smith) who was formally offered by letter in the fall (and excepted) by a previous staff but the new staff refused to honor it. Hawaii forked out some bucks to payoff his law suit. He never had an official campus visit or in home visit. Once you’re offered, the school is bound to it. That’s why it’s important to do your homework first. Many players confuse an offer letter with an interest letter.
I guess Jeezy is stupid enough to believe that some coaches don’t offer players just based on his 5 star rating and his game film only.

Who said walk ons are relied on for plan C?? I don’t think I ever heard a coach say that. You welcome walk ons and kids with upside by offering preferred walk on spots but every school does it. USC just got a kid today named Caleb Wilson to walk on. He isn’t plan C. If he blossoms into a NFL TE, then bonus for them. If not, then maybe he can help them on Special Teams.

You are correct. When schools and prospects make oral scholarship agreements with each other, the commitment is not considered binding until put in writing on national letter-of-intent day.
Daniel Smith of Boise, Idaho, alleging the University of Hawaii broke the law when it did not honor a (oral) promise to give him a scholarship after UH changed head coaches from June Jones to Greg McMackin. There was never a formal letter of intent or anything else written.
Case was, like seemingly all UH legal matters, was settled out-of-court.
Smith went to some DII school but never played due to injuries.
I don’t think Fresno is in the running for Holmes.
With Daniel Smith, the problem wasn’t pulling back the offer. The problem was telling him not to pursue other offers. After that, offers were put in writing.

Just to put my 2cents in. You could actually have up to 30 commits and 30 scholarships to give for the year but there is reasons why you can do that. If I’m not mistaken is if you don’t have all 85 scholarships used. The most you could sign is 30 but you have to have exceptions.

Mahalo to Jeezy and Kapakahi for keeping up on the latest recruiting stuff. Every recruiting site on the webb is using twitter, facebook, etc. to track the latest decisions. Glad we have guys that know how to utilize those same resources. ST has to have more solid leads to report on a major outlet like the SA but this stuff, whether or not it ultimately comes to fruition, still tells us a little more on the Warrior recruiting trail. Facinating if you’re a recruitaholic like me. I for one like the big OL guys that could be signing. How many times in the past have we potentially had so many 6’6″ type OL guys on signing day. It’s obvious Chow intends to keep the running game an important part of the offensive attack. Size absolutely makes a difference in run blocking. JJ showed a 6’2″ athletic OT works in a pass first offense but I’m excited to see this much size. When Kaumeyer was let go he said in an interview that when he and Chow were hired they made a promise to not leave the cupboards as bare as what they inherited when they leave. Very bold but revealing statement.

Speculation is at a peak. Lots of opinions and assessments. Think there will be some more surprises to the good. The fence sitters and long shots appear to be known. We will see what happens and regardless of what many think…..this has the makings of the strongest group by far than in the past couple of years. Gotta take chances when you just can’t get what you want. Here is to the new thrust for fundraising to support this program. I for one am in it is the only way to upgrade the program overall. Go Warriors!!!!
Of course a coach offers a scholarship to his best recruits or most wanted recruits, and takes a few select walkons who do not count against the scholarship limit. A very few manage to get a scholarship eventually and this does limit space on the roster for new players or new recruits. So if you have a lot of walkons playing it means you could not get enough recruits worth offering a scholarship to. Walkons sometimes turn out to be gems who were not recruited becasue they were a step slower, smaller than normal, or did not have a great high school record, but they can overcome this to become very good players.
Are we absolutely not on the radar of that large o-linemen from Punahou? Wouldn’t it be just about an all time coup in both he and Ulu-Perry decided to play at home.
Wishful thinking at best but nice to dream.

Maybe he’s waiting to see what Ulu-Perry does……since seems like he wants to go to school where he he’ll already know a teammate (Canton Kaumatule @ Oregon, Breiden Fehoko @ Texas Tech, Kanawai Noa @ Cal, Fred Ulu-Perry???).
