Waiting game

If you missed the turnover at midnight, it’s now the dead period again for recruiting. That means a team can initiate only one telephone call per week to each prospect.

UH has plans in place to add prospects and to replace those who might de-commit.

Meanwhile, Punahou punter Alexander Trifonovitch’s commitment means:

> The Warriors are re-emphasizing the importance of a solid punting game. After all, Scott Harding, who punted as part of his three duties, was the back-to-back MVP for the Warriors.

> Trifonovitch played the majority of his games at Aloha Stadium.

> Trifonovitch has received tutoring from Eric Hannum, Tyler Hadden and Ka‘imi Fairbairn.

Here’s the full S-A story: Trifonovitch

* * * * *

The average UH sports fan walks into a Satellite City Hall and, while waiting for a loooong time, notices there’s always a window vacated because a worker is doing paperwork. We grumble about the line. We grumble about all the documents we have to bring. We grumble about the vacated window. But we never say: “As taxpayers, we don’t want to pay for Paperwork Person.”

The point is the UH athletic department always grumbles about being broke and fans always grumble about supporting a broke athletic department. But it seems the large amount of financial support is voluntary — ticket purchase, booster-club membership — while the mandatory part (taxes that go to the state, which allocates a portion to UH, which allocates a smaller portion to athletics) is minimal. If you’re paying a UH tuition, which includes a sports activity fee, then that’s a mandatory contribution. But only 1.4 percent of Hawaii’s population pays that fee.

The survey in today’s paper re-emphasizes what is obvious. Sports is entertainment and a business. If you want to support it, go ahead. If you don’t, then don’t support it.

  2. BigFan February 2, 2015 9:20 am

Well, I hope the contingent players are just as good.

  3. PONO February 2, 2015 9:28 am

That’s not good if we are planning on losing guys at the last minute, but at least we have a backup plan.

  4. azwarrior22 February 2, 2015 9:44 am

Why only 1 call per week, when the LOI signing day is Wed?

  5. letsgowarriors February 2, 2015 9:51 am

call me crazy but i am very happy w our local commits this class.

Agasiva, Matautia, Afalava and Borden. Ulu-Perry would make this a GREAT local class for us, IMO.

Continues the dismal track record of Chow for bad recruiting.

  7. azwarrior22 February 2, 2015 9:56 am

Here’s a thought…can an unannounced DC with UH ties be helping with recruiting behind the scenes?

  8. st. anthony trojan February 2, 2015 9:57 am

Problem is…if the back-up plan has been ‘poached’…..what then ??

Seems like from one poster on here….we are last in the MWC…in recruiting…3 star players…all others have double digits… n we have one so far….eeek…
Not sure if was Polly or sumone else….looks very very dismal…..but hey…we got a punter…n maybe..we get a few surprises….

Hope all enjoyed the game yesterday…
Monday morning QB….Wilson should have called a time out.. n talk coach into having lynch run it 3 times…or not thrown that pass..n just toss to the end zone that only Yao could catch….then run twice…

  9. azwarrior22 February 2, 2015 9:57 am

#6, I’m no Chow fan but enough with the negative waves…let’s just wait and see how this all plays out.

  10. letsgowarriors February 2, 2015 10:00 am

if Wilson called a timeout he would have burned his final timeout and theyd only be able to run Beastmode once.

  11. Rodney February 2, 2015 10:08 am

Did anyone recognize the TD pass
    before half time,that Seahawks ran.
Look like ikaika to kemp in Unlv

  12. st. anthony trojan February 2, 2015 10:12 am

    # 10..they had 26 seconds…surely they can run 2 plays ?

ne way..is monday morning QB… have to keep that in mind…

Seattle HC says he “saw” NE stack the box with 8 “big players” and decided to pass

who says you MSUT RUN UP THE MIDDLE if 8 in-the-box? fake a hand off for “up-da-middle” and play action pass – easier when Seattle had stacked the receivers to their right side – Wilson certainly can run to his left

all under the bridge and super bowl history!

From OL recruit J.R. Hensley. Whether or not he commits and signs, it’s still pretty cool to see his thoughts about the team.

He also said he had never been around a football team like the Rainbow Warriors.

“Obviously, if I went there I’d be a minority in a way but when I went there it was such a family,” Hensley said. “It was just a whole different setup. I haven’t seen a college football team like that ever.

“Everybody knew everybody so well and they all travel together. They just go by the brother code. I haven’t seen anything like that anywhere else, so it was really, really cool.

  19. Local Boy February 2, 2015 12:58 pm

Did anyone hear about Menlo College dropping their NAIA football program over the weekend? There are a bunch of local Hawaii high school players affected by school’s decision to drop football, only; citing travel subsidies as one reason. Menlo had to travel to other states to play plus pay schools to travel to theirs.

  20. bowwar February 2, 2015 1:20 pm

    19. Got a feeling Lavaka and one of our OL might get to switch to DL. Elijah Tupai and Dejon Allen were good DL in high school. Dejon is starting on O line so doubt it be him. But wouldn’t be shocked if Tupai moved to DT considering we are pretty deep at guard position. Dejon Allen, Eperone Moananu, Tui Eli, John Waa are all capable guards. Fred Ulu Perry would solidify C if we somehow got him. Agasiva can play tackle or inside.

  25. oldyobo February 2, 2015 2:21 pm

Why is stating the fact of Chow’s dismal recruiting considered a negative comment? So all the national ranking services putting Hawaii at the bottom is being negative?

  26. 2scoops February 2, 2015 2:28 pm

    Hey #18:
Just checked the menlo college athletics website and sure enough the board of trustees voted to drop their NAIA football program citing financial issues. Menlo had to pay to travel away and pay travel subsidies to attract other schools to play at menlo. Sounds familiar; UH better take notice. Menlo had rich history of providing another opportunity for our high school kids to play. While not quite division III, there were still quite a bit of local boys from the islands listed on their current roster. So sad. Any of you former menlo college players, care to chime in? Despite being a small school in the palo alto area, menlo college made a name for itself.

    24. His recruiting has been bad. The talent on this current class is actually pretty good for once even though we are missing key positions. Just a little too late I think. His first couple recruiting classes were just so bad all around that it’s making it tough for us to be good right now. Whether it’s guys not qualifying or going on missions, we didn’t hit enough key pieces.

    http://hawaiiathletics.com/news/2013/2/6/FB_0206131442.aspx

Out of 2013 recruiting class, Miller, Polk, Hill, Washington, Kirkwood, Sale, Wily aren’t even on the team. Zwahlen went on mission so he doesn’t join until now. Higdon might be gone and wasn’t really a D1 caliber DB to begin with. It was nice signing Kennedy and Trayvon, but you need to hit on a lot more guys than that.

  30. letsgowarriors February 2, 2015 2:54 pm

  36. jeezy33 February 2, 2015 3:20 pm

    30. But when you count on them to be in your recruiting class and have no contingencies, you pretty much shot yourself in the foot. Pretty sure they signed… So not making it here is a bad thing.

  37. kapakahi February 2, 2015 3:27 pm

    #35,

Bad enough if they enrolled but never contributed…….but worse if they didn’t even qualify to enroll…….yet counted towards the allowed annual maximum of 25 scholie signees…….and take a scholie spot that coulda gone to a qualifer instead……who might’ve contributed.

  38. Old School Dave February 2, 2015 3:34 pm

Former UH recruit Drake Miller who left after his redshirt year, is now at Dixie State (UT). Doesn’t seem to have seen much action. Maybe injuries?

  39. What??? February 2, 2015 3:48 pm

A fact is something that has really occurred or is actually the case.

An opinion is a judgment, viewpoint, or statement about matters commonly considered to be subjective.

Some people seem to think their opinion is a fact. They cannot be correct before the event happens and plays out. 2013 has partially played out. 2015 has not.

  40. BigWave96744 February 2, 2015 4:21 pm

Don’t be surprised if Drake ends up at Utah St. Klune was the LB coach at Utah St when Drake chose Hawaii over USU. He left Hawaii to be closer to home. He comes from a tight nit family in Utah and is getting married soon.

  41. kapakahi February 2, 2015 4:23 pm

    #38,

    Nice opinion……

  42. Fei jai February 2, 2015 5:11 pm

Glad norm got us a decent punter this year. Can’t play chowball without a good punter.

    Thanks norm!

Maybe we can be known as punter university? Usc is linebacker university. Hawaii is punter u.

  43. Warbow February 2, 2015 5:27 pm

#36…another way walk-ons hurt the program. Those scholarships that don’t make it to campus are then given to average talent walk-ons who bust their tails in practice. Those walk ons help but hurt at the same time because of poor recruiting we’re losing what could be quality athletes for average walk ons.

  44. letsgowarriors February 2, 2015 5:31 pm

Lol what? That makes zero sense warbow

  45. pollypicador February 2, 2015 5:32 pm

Re-Will the school’s basketball violations serve notice to how Chow follows the rules?

    Absolutely.

If Chow didn’t follow the rules to the letter T in the past you can bet that he will in the future, especially in the wake of what is happening to the school’s basketball program facing many rules violation.

The school can ill afford to have 2 programs in hot water because it may induce the NCAA to hand out more severer penalties. (?) So I think it would behoove Chow’s governing of the team this season (and next?) to be squeaky clean.

Chow can’t break, circumvent or overlook any of the rules.

The school’s Chancellor needs to reiterate this to Chow. One black eye is bad enough. Two “may” give the proponents of UH athletics some fuel to have the football program on permanent hiatus.

One area of my personal concern is for Chow not to exceed the NCAA mandated countable 20 hours/4 hours a day of activity (practice, weight lifting, team meetings etc.) his players go thru during the football season. From my observation this may be borderline, especially how I have often seen how the players are getting at least 15-20 minutes of practice time with their position coaches (most notable are the OL and special teams) before and even after practice.

Every stone needs to be overturned…and overturned again…and scrutinized.

Boosters, transcripts, camps, off season compliance, recruiting rules…everything.

Every smudging of the rules in the past, too, need to be under stricter enforcement.

Chow has to be proactive, vigilant and honest at following the rules.

Anything less and another repeat of what is happening to the basketball team happening to the football team will spell doom to the image (public perception, respect) of the school in my opinion. It would get ugly.

  46. Warbow February 2, 2015 5:33 pm

For every walk-on that is awarded a scholarship during the season, there’s a recruiting failure that made it happen, except in cases of career ending injuries to scholarship players.

  47. Warbow February 2, 2015 5:38 pm

43…we’re allowed to award 25 scholarships per year but stay at the 80 total limit. So if 5 guys sign and Hawaii excepts their LOI’s but don’t make it to campus, that’s 5 scholarships that they can award to walk-ons or transfers provided they don’t go over the 80 limit. Make sense now?

  48. jeezy33 February 2, 2015 5:40 pm

    45. You do realize that walk ons are awarded scholarships at every school right? And it does not affect the initial scholarship recruiting class unless it is awarded within 1st 2 years. So if a walk on comes to Hawaii, gets awarded a scholarship his junior year, it affects nothing. Scholarships open up all the time due to transfers, graduations, medical retirements, etc. Your logic makes 0 sense. Sorry..

    This is fact.. not opinion

  49. jeezy33 February 2, 2015 5:41 pm

85 is the limit if I’m not mistaken. Which is more than enough to put together a solid team.

  50. Warbow February 2, 2015 5:51 pm

    45. Makes sense to me. Hawaii’s walk on policy is their plan C for recruiting. So we have 25 guys sign their LOI’s and are promised scholarships but only 20 make it into school. That’s 5 scholarship that Hawaii uses to award to 5 prior walk ons if they don’t put Hawaii over the 80 mark. Like you said if it’s with in the first two years it counts against the initial 25 per year. If they had done the proper homework they players with bad grades or can’t make the SAT scores like Holmes would never been offered scholarships. If he signs and don’t make the grades, which will happen, that’s one scholarship that a average walk on will end up getting.

  51. What??? February 2, 2015 5:53 pm

#47 – Yes, that is a fact (in my opinion)

  52. Warbow February 2, 2015 5:58 pm

    85. Oh I forgot, you’re the guy who said that it’s not an official offer without an in home or campus visit. Lol

  53. letsgowarriors February 2, 2015 5:59 pm

If u have leftover initials u can give it to a late qualifier or save it for January and give it to a midyear jc kid and count him towards the previous class

  54. jeezy33 February 2, 2015 6:00 pm

    49. Your talking about 2 completely different subjects…

    1. Has our recruiting been bad? prior to this current one? Yes.. No argument there.

    2. Do walk ons hurt our recruiting? No. Walk ons aren’t promised anything. If a walk on decides to come here, is good, and can help the football team, then its a bonus.

I’ll repeat it again. Bryant Moniz, Chad Owens, Ashley Lelie, Royce Pollard, James Fenderson, Lono Manners, Reggie Torres, Shane Austin, Britton Komine, Steele Jantz, and I’m sure there are more don’t hurt the team. These guys are bonuses. If we offered every kid we thought was the next Owens, we’d be in bad shape. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Yes, Hawaii needs to recruit and evaluate a lot better. But lets not hate on walk ons because there is no correlation there.

  55. jeezy33 February 2, 2015 6:02 pm

I said most kids you are serious about offering, is followed up with a visit. Verbal offers in the fall mean absolutely nothing these days. Go search the databases. There are over 100 reported offers. But I don’t expect you to know anything about recruiting. I’m sure Ryan Parenteau really chose UC Davis over Hawaii. hmm

  56. jeezy33 February 2, 2015 6:03 pm

OT Austin Webb announced his commitment to Hawaii just now. He is one tall dude. Probably needs to redshirt to get stronger.

  57. jeezy33 February 2, 2015 6:05 pm

I guess Warbow thinks coaches are dumb enough to offer a kid a scholarship without meeting a kid and his family to get to know what type of character he has….

  58. Warbow February 2, 2015 6:17 pm

    49. Walk ons hurt your recruiting when they are relied upon to be your Plan C. Nothing against walk ons, I see the needs for them but if they are your plan C, then you’re in trouble.

    54. Tell that to the former recruit (Smith) who was formally offered by letter in the fall (and excepted) by a previous staff but the new staff refused to honor it. Hawaii forked out some bucks to payoff his law suit. He never had an official campus visit or in home visit. Once you’re offered, the school is bound to it. That’s why it’s important to do your homework first. Many players confuse an offer letter with an interest letter.

  59. Warbow February 2, 2015 6:20 pm

I guess Jeezy is stupid enough to believe that some coaches don’t offer players just based on his 5 star rating and his game film only.

  60. Old Diver February 2, 2015 6:24 pm

Nothing wrong with offering one or two borderline recruits which the BCS schools have turned away. For Hawaii that sometimes is the only way to get your 3 plus star recruit. IMO this fourth recruiting class for Chow will have to impact the team immediately or he is out. Waiting for Wednesday.

  61. jeezy33 February 2, 2015 6:26 pm

    57. So you’re going almost a decade back to find a time where a kid got his scholarship pulled? That happens all the time… Chow is the coach now so I don’t think he’ll be offering any scholarships without bringing a kid for a visit to tour the school. I hope you know your facts if you’re going to bring up an old case from way back.

Who said walk ons are relied on for plan C?? I don’t think I ever heard a coach say that. You welcome walk ons and kids with upside by offering preferred walk on spots but every school does it. USC just got a kid today named Caleb Wilson to walk on. He isn’t plan C. If he blossoms into a NFL TE, then bonus for them. If not, then maybe he can help them on Special Teams.

Why can’t we ask for Hawaii to recruit better and have a solid walk on program where over looked kids like Ikaika Piceno, Ranan Mamiya, Kapiiokala King, Nayton Kuresa can come in and compete?? We only have 25 scholarships like u say so it help to bring in hungry 18 year olds who want to compete.

So is signing undrafted free agents in the NFL hurting your draft because undrafted kids are outperforming your draft picks.. I mean NFL teams like Seattle and NE can’t be relying on Plan B to compensate bad draft picks…

  62. jeezy33 February 2, 2015 6:27 pm

    58. And I’m sure you’re stupid enough to believe that the coaches wouldn’t pay a visit to that kid if they are actively recruiting him and the kid has interest in Hawaii…

  63. jeezy33 February 2, 2015 6:28 pm

Warbow, stop getting desperate and digging yourself a hole because you know absolutely nothing…

  64. Warbow February 2, 2015 6:34 pm

62 .. So says the tweeter recruit stalker and Hawaii’s own Mel Keiper Jr. wannabe.

  65. jeezy33 February 2, 2015 6:37 pm

Great comeback.. Lot of logic… Getting called a stalker by someone that stalks me… Ironic.

  66. jeezy33 February 2, 2015 6:37 pm

  67. tom February 2, 2015 6:42 pm

    # 44 I have often seen how the players are getting at least 15-20 minutes of practice time with their position coaches (most notable are the OL and special teams) before and even after practice.

Thank you for pointing this out – I am sure that NCAA will be interviewing you soon.

What makes you think that they don’t read this kind of stuff?

  73. kapakahi February 2, 2015 7:32 pm

    #55,

Don’t if they already are……or are even gonna be……good Olinemen, but just gotta say that……the 3 mainland HS OL prospects (Hensley from OK, Webb from TX, Northup from CA) sure do at least look the part…..with their measureables. Can’t teach height and length……but can develop strength and technique.

At least they’ll look good in uniform……hopefully for UH.

Wonder whether Webb’s commitment to UH just today……just 1 day after this last weekend’s recruiting visits……means that Ulu-Perry decided to stick with his UCLA commitment.

    Hmmm…..

  74. kapakahi February 2, 2015 7:35 pm

    does that make sense?

  85. BigFan February 2, 2015 8:41 pm

#72, it was interesting to note that Hensley mentioned in a recent article that it was a great family atmosphere at UH but realized that he would be a minority. For some that can be intimidating. He seems like a good prospect.

  86. BigFan February 2, 2015 8:49 pm

Not that he was considering us but looks like Nela Otukolo going to Fresno ST. Maybe this will limit Desean Holmes choices, lol.

  87. tom February 2, 2015 9:14 pm

    # 71 AL:

You are correct. When schools and prospects make oral scholarship agreements with each other, the commitment is not considered binding until put in writing on national letter-of-intent day.

Daniel Smith of Boise, Idaho, alleging the University of Hawaii broke the law when it did not honor a (oral) promise to give him a scholarship after UH changed head coaches from June Jones to Greg McMackin. There was never a formal letter of intent or anything else written.

Case was, like seemingly all UH legal matters, was settled out-of-court.

Smith went to some DII school but never played due to injuries.

I don’t think Fresno is in the running for Holmes.

  89. Stephen Tsai February 2, 2015 9:19 pm

With Daniel Smith, the problem wasn’t pulling back the offer. The problem was telling him not to pursue other offers. After that, offers were put in writing.

    #83,

Not a commitment……but some kind of offer (probably as an invited walk-on)……to Kaleb Fossum…..from El Toro HS (Orange County, Cali.)……to play WR/SB/PR/KR prospect in FB……and LHP in baseball…..for UH….

    Then between UH…….and SDSU?

Just to put my 2cents in. You could actually have up to 30 commits and 30 scholarships to give for the year but there is reasons why you can do that. If I’m not mistaken is if you don’t have all 85 scholarships used. The most you could sign is 30 but you have to have exceptions.

  93. Z February 2, 2015 9:29 pm

Thanks for clarification ST. I figured it had to be more than just pulling the offer with Smith.

  94. Fei Jai February 2, 2015 9:33 pm

Seriously. If you come to uh now as a chow recruit, you are damaged goods to the incoming head coach.

  95. BigWave96744 February 2, 2015 9:43 pm

For those keeping score, Nela Otukolo decomitted from his old Bishop Gorman HS after a few days and now committed to Fresno St

  96. BigWave96744 February 2, 2015 9:49 pm

The trend now days make verbal commitment a joke. Its now common for guys to decommit 2-3 times before LOI day.

    Wham Bam Thank You Ma’a.

    Ma’am

  98. Old Diver February 2, 2015 10:01 pm

What ever happened to? Just saw that Eastern Illinois QB Andrew Manley is training with Chad Ikei in hopes of getting a shot at the NFL.

  99. al February 2, 2015 10:10 pm

    93…no class.

  100. al February 2, 2015 10:14 pm

Nope. 25 commits for the ensuing season max. Not including some grey shirts and not including those going on a mission. Subject to no more than 85 current scholar student/athletes for the year.

  101. 3-Prong February 2, 2015 10:14 pm

    Salanoa Alo Wiley,
Play in front of family and friends. If you plan to live in the dessert in the future choose UNLV. if you plan on coming back home, put on the green. Step right in at Defensive end or choose to be the next Joey, up to you! Let’s Go Bows!

  102. al February 2, 2015 10:17 pm

One way or another we need a WR/KR in this class as bad as we need some DT’s.

  103. al February 2, 2015 10:19 pm

Alo-Wily was projected as a DT. He could have started here.

Mahalo to Jeezy and Kapakahi for keeping up on the latest recruiting stuff. Every recruiting site on the webb is using twitter, facebook, etc. to track the latest decisions. Glad we have guys that know how to utilize those same resources. ST has to have more solid leads to report on a major outlet like the SA but this stuff, whether or not it ultimately comes to fruition, still tells us a little more on the Warrior recruiting trail. Facinating if you’re a recruitaholic like me. I for one like the big OL guys that could be signing. How many times in the past have we potentially had so many 6’6″ type OL guys on signing day. It’s obvious Chow intends to keep the running game an important part of the offensive attack. Size absolutely makes a difference in run blocking. JJ showed a 6’2″ athletic OT works in a pass first offense but I’m excited to see this much size. When Kaumeyer was let go he said in an interview that when he and Chow were hired they made a promise to not leave the cupboards as bare as what they inherited when they leave. Very bold but revealing statement.

  105. leron February 2, 2015 11:12 pm

A good example of verbals not holding true weight until signing day:

Someone at Montana State is bummed

  106. BigWave96744 February 3, 2015 1:42 am

Leron #104, good find…. I guess you win some and lose some.

  107. Maddog50 February 3, 2015 4:57 am

Speculation is at a peak. Lots of opinions and assessments. Think there will be some more surprises to the good. The fence sitters and long shots appear to be known. We will see what happens and regardless of what many think…..this has the makings of the strongest group by far than in the past couple of years. Gotta take chances when you just can’t get what you want. Here is to the new thrust for fundraising to support this program. I for one am in it is the only way to upgrade the program overall. Go Warriors!!!!

  108. tempmanoa February 3, 2015 7:37 am

Of course a coach offers a scholarship to his best recruits or most wanted recruits, and takes a few select walkons who do not count against the scholarship limit. A very few manage to get a scholarship eventually and this does limit space on the roster for new players or new recruits. So if you have a lot of walkons playing it means you could not get enough recruits worth offering a scholarship to. Walkons sometimes turn out to be gems who were not recruited becasue they were a step slower, smaller than normal, or did not have a great high school record, but they can overcome this to become very good players.

  109. Buffoman February 3, 2015 7:47 am

Are we absolutely not on the radar of that large o-linemen from Punahou? Wouldn’t it be just about an all time coup in both he and Ulu-Perry decided to play at home.

Wishful thinking at best but nice to dream.

  110. Shoko February 3, 2015 8:00 am

Here’s hoping for some good recruiting news.

  111. kapakahi February 3, 2015 8:11 am

    #108,

Took 4 official recruiting visits (Oregon, UCLA, Texas Tech, Cal)…….but still undecided……so could still take a 5th official trip…….to UH……if still undecided after NLI Day.

Maybe he’s waiting to see what Ulu-Perry does……since seems like he wants to go to school where he he’ll already know a teammate (Canton Kaumatule @ Oregon, Breiden Fehoko @ Texas Tech, Kanawai Noa @ Cal, Fred Ulu-Perry???).

    Hmmm…..

  112. PONO February 3, 2015 8:53 am

UH is not being considered by the Punahou lineman that is uncommitted.
