Ulu-Perry to take UH visit

Fred Ulu-Perry, a Saint Louis School center, has accepted an invitation to take a UH-hosted recruiting visit in late January.

Ulu-Perry already has made an oral commitment to sign with UCLA. But there are 51 days until signing day (Feb. 3), and, well, ya never know …

The Warriors have an open competition at center. Kody Afusia has completed his UH eligibility, and Ben Clarke, who was the Warriors’ starting center as a freshman and sophomore in 2012 and 2013, is sticking at left tackle. John Wa‘a and Brendan Urban will compete at center in spring ball.

It also appears Kahuku quarterback Tuli Wily-Matagi, who made an oral commitment to Utah, also is open to an official UH-hosted recruiting visit.

    Congrats to Mariota!

What happened to Kaiwi Chung? Will he be in the mix too after redshirting?

  4. Stephen Tsai December 14, 2014 8:54 am

    Leron:
Chung practiced mostly as a fullback while redshirting this season.

What about Semisi Uluave? who is he leaning torwards to?

  10. Brad December 14, 2014 9:51 am

I guess UH only push is to ensure him he will start next year. But if he’s that good he could start at UCLA too. Too bad UH cannot offer him other amenities.

  11. Old School Dave December 14, 2014 9:59 am

Heard something to the effect (Kalani Takase?) that schools have backed off on Uluave, and that his stock has fallen off, somewhat. Could be wrong, though.

The “balanced offense that Coach Chow has implemented moved Hawaii to a Rushing Offense ranking #82 in 2014. This is up from the 2010 season ranking of #107, but the difference is only about 43 yards per game. At the same time, Hawaii’s Total Offense ranking is now #95 versus #6, with total offensive yards decreasing by about 136 years per game. Defense under Chow has slightly worse statistics, but seems amazingly good considering how little offensive play is occurring. Passing Defense went from 222 YPG to 246 YPG, so it doesn’t seem that has changed much. Net Punting is a dubious bright spot, now at #13 versus #65 in 2010. The Turnover-Margin ranking is now tied for #107, versus #14 in 2010.

jeffdman2000….cool ur so very right…. we got rid of the most ‘negative’ dude up there…problem is he won’t gp away…without being more n more negative in the nationwide press….whenever he can…

N I guess what brought this about is….all the ‘negatives’ posters had on here about his misguided ways to sum ne way… in a minuscule way…

Me sure many on here would help him pack…ASAP….

    However…ur correct…to many negatives…can’t help to show our concern…
n wanting improvement from the dismal record of coach…

But very ‘rarely’ if ever me see ne negative posts about one of our players…who we almost agree on…work hard…n they should be commended for their candor n honesty…more me can say about our soon to depart AD…

Hope you take a step ‘back’ n agree with part of what I say ne way…
We can all learn to disagree….n be ‘civil’ doing so…IMUA …M & M

New ‘spokesperson’ for Mars Candy maybe…he he he

    #19:

    I’m with you on that!

For me, the only “stat” that counts is wins and losses. Team could have 600 yards passing and 400 yards rushing for a single game, but if the score is 55 to 52 for the opponents what good is the “yardage”?

  22. st. anthony trojan December 14, 2014 11:09 am

  23. UHfan808 December 14, 2014 11:26 am

    Good morning, Tsai-kos!

Pleased to see our island guys are giving UH a look see 🙂

Even tho playing for a mainland school is neat and cool, it is also cool to play for the home team where the ppl who raised you and ppl you grew up with can come see and cheer you on without always having to catch a plane to give you high fives, words of encouragement and praise, and hugs almost immediately after home games.

Not to mention, you’d get to play for, help, and contribute to our Hawai’i Team on its quest to move back up the rankings back to Sugar Bowl years rather than help some other team kinda sorta far far away and even ones that play against our Hawai’i Team.

Opportunities are what you make of it. Be innovative in your thinking for the good of human beings, be open to feedback and know what to keep and throw out, read a lot of the good stuff, do a lot of dot connecting, and always put in the work to get stuff done and you will get to live breathe and do neat things no matter where you live or go to school. Amazing things do happen in Hawai’i Nei, too.

    😀

  24. bowwar December 14, 2014 11:30 am

Nice gesture, but UH should save their recruiting money to bring in blue-chip talent from the mainland…

    You usually make great points.

  26. UHfan808 December 14, 2014 11:54 am

Lol I think the most negative ppl on this blog couldn’t even play football but they’re sure great and terrific about making sure ppl know they have a complaint.

Btw, no one said one cannot complain. It’s more about the way those ones complain. Instead of outright complaining all the time, figure out how to complain tactfully and productively so one doesn’t throw ppl under the bus – hurt ppl’s feelings (disprespect) – and so the complainer doesn’t just end up doing exactly what they are/were complaining about in their harsh criticism of others.

What’s “funny” is when someone complains here about another being a bad coach/etc. yet the arguments and words these complainers post here on WB look nothing like a what good coach, good administrator, or good boss should be or do.

If you want ppl to listen to your comments and productive complaints (yes, complaints are not useful unless they are made in productive ways), you also have to act like and be the good coach/boss you are setting expectations for others too, right?!

  27. Chow Von Appen December 14, 2014 12:07 pm

oh, jeffdman2000. kleenex is on sale at longs, i heard.

UHfan808: no idea what you’re talking about. just because someone calls someone else a “bad coach” doesn’t mean that the person saying those words thinks he/she is a good coach.

  28. oneseason December 14, 2014 12:21 pm

#14 … 2011 definitely was less stellar in many respects (below). The comparison was between the best records (2010 & 2014) of the two most recent systems.

#21 … 2010 10 Win – 4 Loss season was pretty exciting. Improving on it would be great. However, big conference teams now have a lot more resources relative the great unwashed, so … it might be a while.

Since 2011 represents the transition point between the systems, it is also a good comparison with 2014; though when I think back to how many field goals were missed during that season, and how close many of the losses were, I can’t help but think what might have been in 2012. I was surprised to see how far the turnover ratio fell in 2011 (#74) compared to 2010 (#14), and that the punting improved in 2011 (#26) from 2010 (#65).

    Aloha kākou,

I think itʻs time to bring back Jim Donovan.

The Wonder blunder was an honest mistake.

He couldnʻt do the MWC deal because it costed too much money. Rockne Freitas was the “hero” who made the deal that we have now.

Heʻs one of ours, bleeds green. And he knows the job.

Thereʻs no magic in being an AD. They can only do what is humanly possible. Honolulu is not loaded with rich people willing to shell out big bucks like in Ohio. What makes them think that Ben Jay could do better? Or anyone else? Especially a newcomer.

    Bring back Jim Donovan.

    Kden, Puhi

  42. Tempmanoa December 14, 2014 5:22 pm

I am a huge supporter of Hawaii football, but is impossible to ignore the statistics that show how much our offense and defense have declined since Chow took over- you can argue it was the players and not the coach, but the decline is there.
Our offensive rating, combining several stats used by NFL teams for evaluating offense and defense show the following rankings out of 128 Teams. See College Football by the Numbers, and Football Outsiders databases. Ranking the stat is better than the stat itself, since it tell you where you stand next to competition– Scoring 30 points a game means nothing if your competition scores 35 points a game.
    Offense
    2010 Rank 14
    2011 Rank 68
    2012 Rank 122
    2013 Rank 103
    2014 Rank 125
    Defense
    2010 Rank 32
    2011 Rank 82
    2012 Rank 106
    2013 Rank 69
    2014 Rank 111

  43. kama krab December 14, 2014 5:42 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

In regards to Ulu-Perry, Uncle Norm was on campus last Thursday to see couple boys and it looks like Ulu-Perry will give UH a good look before signing day. He is one that would probably stay if given the opportunity.

In regards to Uluave, I think he will still end up at a big time school. Haven’t been able to keep up with him lately since I haven’t been up to campus since the ending of the season but I still feel that he has much upside and definitely has a mean streak. I even think UH has an outside shot for him.

  44. HawaiiMongoose December 14, 2014 5:46 pm

I have no problem at all with someone coming here and posting statistics from a valid source that shed light on trends in UH’s performance. That’s not negativism. That’s recognizing the situation for what it is, which is the first step toward improving it.

  45. islandman December 14, 2014 6:47 pm

    37. Tempmanoa; From the cfbstats site:

2012 Hawaii is ranked 107, 35.7 pts allowed per game, scoring defense
2013 Hawaii is ranked 115, 38.8 pts allowed per game, scoring defense
2014 Hawaii is ranked 66, 26.8 pts allowed per game

So your ranks are reversed for defense, i think , for 2013 and 2014 .

  46. PHIL December 14, 2014 6:58 pm

#26 “PUHI”…I agree about Jim Donovan. Ben Jay has no connection to the spirit & culture of Hawaii, doesn’t understand our love & passion for the UH football team, and he doesn’t know how to keep his BIG MOUTH SHUT…..I’m quite shocked we’ve gotten commitments from recruits; if I were a competing recruiter for a player UH wants, I’d bring up all the negative stuff BJ has said. Seems he wants to take the UH Athletic Dept down before he leaves.

  47. PHIL December 14, 2014 7:03 pm

#35 “ai-eee-sos”…I would not be shocked if Philly pulls a trade to get the #1 pick and goes after Marcus. Who would know him better than Chip Kelly…

  48. PONO December 14, 2014 7:13 pm

We can’t land the proverbial big fish if we don’t have our line in the water. The official visit is our line in the water. You never know.

  49. kev-1 December 14, 2014 7:37 pm

Whether a highly recruited local boy has any intention of staying home or not, the home team should host a visit. It shows the kid that you have interest, it shows the community that you have interest, it shows local high schools that you have interest, and it doesn’t hurt.

They just need to have someone there using the Jedi mind trick . . . “This is the school you were looking for. You are going to sign with UH.”

  50. st. anthony trojan December 14, 2014 8:46 pm

not cost much to host local recruit….nice gesture.. n it not hurt…

We’ll see what kind of changes Chow makes on his staff. If it stays the same we will be “up sh__ creek”. I dont think Milton will like what he sees if it doesn’t change. He might be thinking the O might morph into something substantial and if it does not might go USA.

  53. Abunai December 14, 2014 10:01 pm

If we can some how land Ulu Perry, Uluave and Wily Matagi it would be sweet!! Then maybe more local recruits would stay home….

  54. Maui December 14, 2014 10:10 pm

See all you talented local athlete don’t stay in Hawaii if you want to be like Marcus.

  55. Kaimiloa December 14, 2014 11:01 pm

47… Milton picked UH because he’s been a lifelong UH fan, not because of who the coach is.

  56. David J. December 14, 2014 11:52 pm

I was reading some of your commitment!. Why shouldn’t our local be recruited by University of Hawaii?. The kids that’s come to Hawaii to visit the University of Hawaii football program. They look at the University campus, football schedule and most of all things is the fans base!. A lots of kids wants to play with large crowd to watch them play!. But having only 17,000 or less fans support it’s really better to play in the mainland university!. That’s is why lots of local kids goes away from home to play sports somewhere else then Hawaii!. But not for the women volleyball team because they are the best in the university have to show!. Whatever happening in Hawaii sports program good or really bad you all should be blaming for it!. By not supporting your team spirt and pride!

  57. Maddog50 December 15, 2014 4:05 am

Would love to see a few more top tier kids cast their lot with the Warriors. I had info from a good source, close to the program that 4-5 wins this year (2014) would be about what they expected with the talent they had. In retrospect it could have been more with losses coming after solid or at least leading at the half. The defense needs help across the board the offense speed on the outside and some OL. Some of this is now available with a few of the developing players. Just want a solid above average recruiting class…..Go
    Warriors.

  59. PONO December 15, 2014 7:31 am

I’m pretty sure Uluave is set on going to the mainland. If we can keep home Ulu Perry and a couple Kahuku boys those would be the biggest pickups since Kennedy.

  60. 3-Prong December 15, 2014 7:57 am

We shouldn’t underestimate the desire of some of the kids to want to play in front of family and friends and wear the green of Hawaii. Sure Mariota and Te’o made it big time, but the vast majority of the players that go away would make a bigger name for themselves by staying home.

    LETS GO BOWS!
