Patek draws interest

The Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League have inquired about the availability of former UH safety Jake Patek.
Patek said he is working out and attending Summer Session I.
If he does not play in Canada, he would attend school in the fall, and serve as a volunteer with the Warriors.

Here’s Patek slamming Steve Wichman:

Linebacker Brad Kalilimoku, who completed his UH eligibility at the end of the Sugar Bowl, could have continued to audition for Canadian Football League teams. With his quickness, he is a natural fit in the CFL’s wider game.
Instead, he decided to pursue another dream: A college degree.
Kalilimoku will serve as a student manager for the Warriors this season. He is on track to graduate in December.
“I don’t have to worry about two things anymore,” said Kalilimoku, who is a Hawaiian Studies major. “If (football) doesn’t work out, I’ll always have my degree.”
Kalilimoku was co-creator of the ha‘a chant the Warriors performed last season.

Here’s a link to Kalilimoku’s Pro Day workouts (which, for some reason, showed up on Youtube. It’s also a reminder of why we miss Princess Leila’s great work):

It has been reported that Chad Owens suffered a torn ACL that will end his Arena Football League season.
But Owens said the status of the injury, suffered in Saturday’s game, is “unknown.”
He said he will undergo further medical tests, including an MRI.
“I’m going to wait and see,” Owens said.

After allowing the offense some time to learn the plays, the defense has started to attended the unsupervised workouts. Here are two reasons why UH’s pass defense will be very good this season: cornerback Jameel Dowling and safety Erik “E-Rob” Robinson.

There’s no question that Adam Leonard will be one of the leaders this season. As previously noted, Leonard (and Solomon Elimimian) will represent the Warriors at next month’s WAC Football Preview in Salt Lake City.

Congrats to one of our blog readers, Punahou’s Abe Markowitz, who graduated Saturday. He’s pictured next to Clarence “Lafu” Tuioti-Mariner, who attended Punahou’s graduation on Saturday, then traveled to California yesterday to attend his brother Max Tuioti-Mariner’s graduation ceremony.

OK, so last week, Ryan Mouton tells me that Keao Monteilh’s new haircut makes him look like A.C. Slater of Saved By The Bell. I run a picture of Monteilh and Slater. Yuk, yuk, yuk. So now they tell me that I remind them of the grandpa — GRANDPA! — in the 3 Ninja movies. You remember that show? “Rocky loves Em-i-ly, Rocky loves Em-i-ly.” Anyway, here’s a picture of grandpa:

Awesome for Brad to stick around and get his degree. He can also help the team this year with the haka/haa, I hope it continues.

ST – if he had tried out for the CFL, I assume it would have negatively affected the APR??

    al,
Who was the pidgin english humorist who used to say, “quick as one swift”?

  9. FloridaTed June 9, 2008 7:43 am

    Good morning/afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Smart move on Brads part. He’ll be a great addition/continuation for the team. The ‘Ha’a” soul shall live on.

I’m curious, with so many newcomers on offense, if any kind of picture has begun to emerge as to where it’s going? Or is it way to early to wonder about this?

  10. FloridaTed June 9, 2008 7:44 am

Best whishes to Chad, that guy can’t seem to buy himself a brake. I hope all is better than it appears.

  11. haka June 9, 2008 7:47 am

    FloridaTed,
Never to early, the wonder of the Warriors! 🙂

I am most interested to see how the o-line comes together.

    FlaTed:
Won’t be able to give an opinion on the o-line until training camp.
The o-line coach Brian Smith is on the Mainland, and won’t be back until later this week. He’s not allowed to work with the blockers until training camp.

  19. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2008 8:02 am

By the way, that’s a nice picture taken by Abe’s dad. He should consider a career in photography.

  20. al June 9, 2008 8:03 am

okay, so i know lafu’s got big hands, since i shook them once at practice. but, that ring is huge on his already huge fingers. it is so huge, the ring, it could be deadly weapon.

hey kids and mom’s don’t forget father’s day is around the corner. celebrate him.

father’s are simple, no need presents or fancy restaurants. they would rather have a backyard bbq with or without a few beverages. they want all the kids there. just give the old man a big hug and tell him you love him.

that’s al it takes, right father’s?

  24. al June 9, 2008 8:08 am

    that’s left her following
    all pissed off.

    can i say that??

  29. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2008 8:15 am

OK, a couple of things from last night’s blog:

    Re: Manti Te‘o.
UH has a shot, but there’s a lot of competition. It’s too early to call.

    Re: The list.
It started as just another request. Despite the conspiracy of some other media folks, UH doesn’t just hand us stuff. If you want a budget item or a contract, you have to file a formal request. At least that’s how it was under the previous administration. So “Ferd” is constantly filing requests. He filed a request for the list, but then kept getting told the release would be delayed. That’s when it grew into interesting story. We all should appreciate “Ferd’s” diligent work. The stories that appear elsewhere often stem from his requests. It’s strange but on big stories, “Ferd” will make the request and UH will release the news to all of the media outlets. When it came to the list, “Ferd” was the only one to make a formal request.

Actually, they do have a right to censor an employee.
I’m caught in a pickle because I can’t talk about the Princess’ return date, and yet it is an important topic.
It’s especially a concern by the football team. Coach Mack praised Leila’s work at last night’s banquet. And the players miss the videos.

Update on a former UH (and BSU) coach.

The Toronto Argonauts Football Club announced that it has extended the contract of General Manager/Vice President, Football Operations, Adam Rita through the 2010 season.

One of the most recognized faces – and haircuts – in the Canadian Football League, Adam Rita is entering his fifth season as the Argonauts’ GM/Vice President, Football Operations after spending 2003 as the Club’s Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator. With over twenty years of experience in the CFL and six Grey Cup wins, Rita is a football executive of incredible depth and experience. In 2004, his first year in his current role, he led the Double Blue to its first Grey Cup win since 1997.

Raised on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, Rita first broke into the professional coaching ranks in 1983 as an Offensive Coordinator with the B.C. Lions under Don Matthews after 12 years spent coaching at the college level with his alma mater Boise State University, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, and the University of Hawaii. After two short seasons in B.C., Rita’s offence led the Lions to their first Grey Cup win since 1964, a 37-24 win over Hamilton.

It’s really a downer sitting in those nearly empty venues with just one in five or ten seats filled for some of the games. Will the decreased prices increase attendance?

STEPHEN: Don’t be too upset that you didn’t get a new camera for Father’s Day. It’s the THIRD Sunday in June – this year, June 15th.

GIGI: I was wondering last night how come there were no Celtics shout-outs besides mine. Is someone going to record the games for you?

KEKOA: Please call me at your earliest convenience. Mahalo. BTW – how’s your dad doing these days?

This Fantasy Sports site doesn’t think that Tyler is a good Fantasy Football pick as a starting QB. Of course, it hasn’t even been decided that Tyler will be the starter yet, so it is not a big shock that Tyler wouldn’t be a fantasy football pick right now.

Bust: Joe Ganz, Nebraska/Tyler Graunke, Hawaii

Any of the ranked quarterbacks could have a bust season, but let’s highlight two players who may not meet expectations in 2008. Graunke is a solid player, but the Hawaii offense will be quite different than what fans saw last season. The Warriors will play more to the defense and running game – which is a significant setback to fantasy owners. Graunke is worth a risk as a backup, but don’t expect Colt Brennan-like numbers in 2008.

Ganz closed out the 2007 season on a tear, but can he consistently put up fantasy numbers every week? Be careful not to overvalue his 2007 numbers, as he’s a backup or third quarterback for your roster.

  63. Garret June 9, 2008 9:26 am

    RE-Sugar Bowl Scandal

If I’m a current football player on the UH team, even looking at how embarrassing the school looks concerning the Sugar Bowl scandal, I would want to look at it objectively. And hope that the wrong doers are held accountable. I would think the current coach would want the same thing. If the two components that Coach Mack preaches about honesty and integrity. And not putting your school in a bad light are rules that he wants his players to adhere to. Then the players and coaches should be welcoming all the scrutiny the school is getting now. And hope that the wrong doer(s) are exposed and interrogated. Mistakes happened. Mistakes can be dealt with. But to think that it should be forgotten, and we should move in. And not look at where all the monies went would tarnish all the work the players achieved into reaching the Sugar Bowl. What a slight and dishonor it would be to last years players and Coach Jones if we should look the other way and forget things now, thinking that it would be distracting for the upcoming season. No “enough is not said”.

For JD, Coach Mac and the current Warrior players I can only imagine the feeling of despair and bewilderment from the school. And really I shake my head. For you folks got us to the main stage. And we… we’re so happy. Yet something that wasn’t suppose to happen backstage happened. And it’s a big headache. And now trying to fix this headache might create a bigger headache.

But when this mess is over. And all the dust is settled. Some atonements may or may not be accepted. Some sorries may or may not be accepted. I hoping they are not. I hope as a precedence harsh action are handed down in this case. For it would make people think twice about cheating again. And rendering favors. And excepting them. For the football players watching they are learning life lessons. And what is a better way to dignify their road to the Sugar Bowl than to say that the hard earned monies they made for the school has some validation.

Still sort of that way today. I mean my street has one Japanese Family, one Hawaiian Family, and one European Family…the rest are Chinese….mwahahha…

  93. AWHs' Cousin June 9, 2008 10:34 am

Das some great news Al. Reminds me of the time I everyone one got better when I was back in Egypt during the plague. Yup, back in the days I used to supervise the making of the pyramids. Used to sit on the board for the Egyptian home lands association. Too bad they would put people far from the Nile. But it was the best place to make really good dried meat. Moved to Asia soon after to help design some of the first poi pounders still used today. I am personally responsible for their shape and design as I would gnaw at the rock until they were works of art… … What were we talking about?

  94. WreckinEyez June 9, 2008 10:37 am

Younger daughter gave us a check for $100 — combined gift for mothers and fathers day. I told her no need, save it for her tuition, but she insisted. I can’t say enough good things about this kid. She works and studies hard. And I know she will reach her goal of becoming a physical therapist.

  100. bulla June 9, 2008 10:47 am

earlier that was a very interesting recollection about our youth congregating in a public park. due to one child’s perception, it appears as if the rest of the group suffered the consequences for that misperception. how sad that the grandfather had to leave with the children because they, the children, chose to leave.

which brings me to the conclusion, we all have our own truths, and we live according to our perception of life and our personal belief system. when one finds oneself in a situation or predicament that is unfamiliar; maybe it would be better to observe, assimilate, and amalgamate gradually. more often than not, it is our very own perception that leads us to a path of fragmentation by being argumentative and disruptive to our environment.

with that said, i think the story told was a wonderful parable of how we should try and live synergistically with everyone.

I am so relieved SteveM’s CAT scan was NEGATIVE (not positive, Al).

We will see him soon on the blog.

    let me say this…..
i don’t like to speak in negatives like some of you. therefore, my assessment is correct in my eyes. because he received a favorable, positive ct-scan.

  112. al June 9, 2008 11:24 am

wreck….long time no see my friend.

you know many of us have been on the this blog for so long that we have become good friends. some of us have just met and have already become good friends.

this blog has recently introduced me to maui boys whitey and duffer. i can honestly say we are good friends in a short time. we have dinner, breakfast, lunch together whenever we can.

some of us are old and some of us are young.
some of us men and some of us are women.
some of us are apples and some of us are oranges (take from my greek wedding).
but in the end we all fruit. (er, tsaiko’s)

    isn’t that what friends do?

see you next thursday folks. genji’s rich and ronnie karaoke/cattle call.

  115. WreckinEyez June 9, 2008 11:59 am

Yah Al, I agree… Many of us truly know what the Tsaiko Culture is. Others are still learning.

I honestly don’t see someone fairly new, having never been to a Tsaiko Anniversary to come in and try to change the blog. It is Tsai’s blog and he can post what ever he wants on it. No one should tell him what to do.

Many of us have been friends and we welcome anybody, I remember when Liz and Kekoa came on board. Others may have a name tag but they are far from being a “Tsaiko”. It doesn’t matter if you make it out to the gatherings or not either. My man Koauka has been around for a while and he is as true as they come. He been here since the beginning also and know the culture as he helped create it.

If you don’t like the heat, no move to Waianae. If you don’t like the Rain, No move to Hilo. If you don’t like the government in Japan, NO MOVE JAPAN.

Some people like to move in and play the boss, with things that isn’t their’s to begin with.

We are all friends here and I hope that people like those who would interrupt the peace and camaraderie of the blog realize that this community is what it has always been and move on to something that they would fit into better.

If can, can… If no can, no can…

  116. HiFlyer June 9, 2008 12:06 pm

i heard ALL about it at lunch, but still wound up with the check. 🙁

    j/k sterch

    Mr. Tsai . . .

The photos are cool. Interesting how you suddenly appeared on the invited list. Your bosses have yet to figure out how much pull you have?

Anyone’s dog went through the Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program and received a Certificate from the AKC?

I was thinking of putting one of my dogs through the program since he gets along well with humans and other dogs.

Eventually he could become a therapy dog but I think people would be kinda scared of him.

g-nalo, hubby doesn’t have Wednesday off. He gets just 6 holidays plus a birthday holiday and an anniversary holiday. Kinda chintzy over there.

I’ll make sure I get this message over to hubby’s boss, the same boss that sends you to nice and fancy dinners. The one who gave him a raise that you raved about. Yeah, I’ll let him know they are chintzy over there.

  174. gigi-hawaii © June 9, 2008 2:28 pm

wafan, yeah, I guess so! Hubby is hoping he will treat us to dinner in Tokyo. But, I told him it is probably too expensive over there, so we shouldn’t expect it.

g-nalo, right on! The State employees got it made. Do they still require you to work 10 years before getting retirement pay and free medical insurance for life? Or do you have to work longer now?

  175. FALSE PORDAGEE June 9, 2008 2:29 pm

Stretch – I see wot you mean….oh, all Tsaikos, next round on Stretch since da buggah wen win $118….woo hoo just joshing my friend.

  176. g-nalo June 9, 2008 2:30 pm

    g-nalo,

uh, us peeps who no work fo da state (or da banks) no get holiday. So no rub it in eh!

oh….sorry JM. but hey, get ‘plenny’ room here, how much sugar in your kope?

  177. gigi-hawaii © June 9, 2008 2:31 pm

eh, Stretch, I really shouldn’t have bragged about the raise. After all, he still makes less than hundred grand a year. Pretty pathetic, eh, considering he works 6 days a week.

g-nalo, right on! The State employees got it made. Do they still require you to work 10 years before getting retirement pay and free medical insurance for life? Or do you have to work longer now?

    nope, those days are gone.

    retirement pay = 5 years
    free medical = 25 years

but there’s other details to go along with just years of service.

  181. wafan June 9, 2008 2:36 pm

The “free” health coverage following 10-years of service is a really nice perk. Here, once I retire, I get for health care, bills. Sometimes I think I should have stayed In Hawai’i. Then I look at my facility and equipment and think otherwise. I wish there were a way I could have stayed at home.

Boy, if it is 5 years, wow!

  240. lopaka43 June 9, 2008 4:40 pm

Steven can’t post about it, but Ian Lind’s site has the following information about the HA negotiations

“Employees of the Honolulu Advertiser are going to hold a rally today to mark the one-year anniversary of the expiration of their contract.

According to a press release from the Hawaii Newspaper Guild

Employees have been working under a contract extension (and pay freeze) for one year. Employees from six unions will wave signs urging the company to quickly reach a settlement on a new contract, and be available to talk about the situation.

The rally and sign waving is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. To 1 p.m. on King Street near the Frank Fasi Municipal Building and Skygate sculpture.

According to the Guild’s web site, Advertiser employees are also being asked to observe “Black Fridays” by wearing black every Friday until a new contract agreement is reached. In addition, the video strike at the Advertiser has been extended indefinitely, with Guild members declining to shoot, edit, or produce new video. The company has responded with a new tie-in with KGMB, which is now supplying video to the Advertiser web site.

    One reader commented:

The Advertiser’s news connection with KGMB for videos for the website is an odd-happening.

last i knew, kgmb’s camera shop was still union (IBEW.) so — since the Tiser’s guild people are withholding their videos until they get a new contract, it would seem that the IBEW’ers at Ch-9 have thrown their lot in with Advertiser management rather than their union brothers and sisters.

also, the Tiser’s newspaper-TV affiliation has long been with KHNL. But it’s KGMB that gets all the promotional value. no idea what that’s all about!”

    Aloha all,

LONG weekend and I haven’t had the chance to keep up to date with much, but a belated get well wish to SteveM:

    Steve,

    “When you are ill,
our sun goes under a cloud.
    Your presence in our lives
    is such a bright joy
    that everything seems in shadow
    when you’re not here.
    When you aren’t feeling well,
    we feel the lack
    of your glowing energy
    and contagious vitality.
    When you are sick
    we feel incomplete,
    like a jigsaw puzzle
    with a missing piece;
    Please rest,
    take good care of yourself,
    and feel better.
    We miss you
    and want you back.”

    Get well soon.

    HELLO INTERNET & TSAI-KO WORLD!

I’m back…mostly. Thank You to everyone for their kind words, wishes and prayers!

After the first evening in Emergency (Friday) I started winning–taking in more liquid antibiotics than I gave out in blood samples 😐 I was amazed: two lab techs running batteries of blood tests in my room. Peaches tells me they were drawing from both arms 🙂

On Saturday Peaches brought me my PowerBook and a copies of the blog on a USB drive. I was too wiped out to read it until the evening, when I realized some people were looking for me… NO wifi signals or wire access….but I did have the presence of mind to hang on to my cell phone when I checked in (although I gave up my wallet). The cell phone–the thing we use when you can’t get to the blog… 😕

Anyway, my fever is under control and my air capacity (?) is 96% so I did not need any breathing appartus intervention. So after 3 nights of antibiotic IV’s, I am released back into the internet wilderness with pill antibiotics in hand.

….good to be back! Thanks again!

  281. FloridaTed June 9, 2008 5:43 pm

I just now checked the pictures again and I’ve noticed that the Tsai-Meister looks a lot like a happy Professor. O.K. good night.

gigi….. i think you are a semester ahead of time. jake’s scheduled to grad in december.

  284. gigi-hawaii © June 9, 2008 5:52 pm

yeah, Al, looks like December. But when I chatted with his mom late last year, she told me he was going to grad in May.

Oh well, what do mothers know.

  285. al June 9, 2008 5:53 pm

    hi there whitey..
    ..
your bio would be ten pages.
i hope you didn’t leave anything out.

folks, whitey should be introduced as the “mayor” of maui. i swear he knows everyone in maui and anything about maui.

FRESNO STATE GOES TO THE COLLEGE WORLD SERIES!

props to them, played well for the past three weeks.

Ho, first game in CWS – against Rice.

    Props to the WAC…

However, I still live by my creed: “ANYBODY but FRESNO STATE” 👿

  287. al June 9, 2008 5:56 pm

    longtimer….

i am not as clumsy. i did get to hug princess leila twice now. once at the first blog bash and again at practice last fall. i even got pix to prove it.

ah, what a sweet girl. i wonder if she wants to meet number one son????

  288. al June 9, 2008 5:57 pm

gigi…..jake graduates that is all that is important.

    what a great kid. godspeed.

  289. Stretch June 9, 2008 5:57 pm

whitey – 10 pages?? Are you listing all your “friends” on Maui??

  290. al June 9, 2008 5:57 pm

    okay, food time.

  291. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 6:03 pm

    Stephen,
Will that board be back again next season?
Looks like that pic was taken after Week 8 – NaMaSU. Wasn’t there a story that went with it?
Hmmm, with the greater SoS and new DC, I wonder if there is thought of upping the ante on some of those goals?
    Win
    17 points or less
    3.4 A. Carry or Less
    No Run Over 20
    No Pass Over 30 (?)
    …..

  292. Long Time UH Fan June 9, 2008 6:07 pm

    Whitey,

I hope you included some of your escapades with the DOA; those were some good stories you shared with me and the mrs. 🙂

  293. bonar June 9, 2008 6:11 pm

the board is a great tool. the goals listed on the board have been rooted with Coach for a long time. The board will be there for long time since it reflects Coach’s philosophy.

  294. Stretch June 9, 2008 6:12 pm

whitey – does your bio start off with “anyong haseyo”??

  295. bonar June 9, 2008 6:12 pm

The board is a great motivational tool. the goals listed on the board have been rooted with Coach for a long time. The board will be there for as long as Coach is there since it reflects Coach’s philosophy.

  296. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 6:13 pm

    bonar,

the goals listed on the board have been rooted with Coach for a long time

    Got it.
    Thanks.
Would you happen to know what the rest of the goals are?

  297. bonar June 9, 2008 6:14 pm

apologies for the nearly double post-got mixed messages!

  298. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 6:18 pm

some of your escapades with the DOA

does your bio start off with “anyong haseyo”??

😯 Boy, am I glad Stephen didn’t ask me to FOLLOW whitey!

  299. gigi-hawaii © June 9, 2008 6:18 pm

hey, Stretch knows Korean. How did that happen?

  300. Stretch June 9, 2008 6:22 pm

    gigi – hmmm……

  301. Kazz June 9, 2008 6:23 pm

    Koauka,

Thanks for the heads-up, I didn’t check my mail yet until I saw that post.

It’s for a good cause, kinda hefty at 125.00, but good thing they sent that in advance so I have some time to prepare.

  302. gigi-hawaii © June 9, 2008 6:24 pm

    Is Stretchette Korean?

  303. Stretch June 9, 2008 6:26 pm

    gigi – yes she is.

  304. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2008 6:28 pm

    The board will remain.
And I am now in possession of Whitey’s bio.

  305. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2008 6:29 pm

Who’s Chad Yazawa, you might ask?
He’s a lurker. Thursdays are now dedicated to lurker bios.

  306. Stretch June 9, 2008 6:31 pm

ST – Anyone set up for a Friday bio??

  307. bonar June 9, 2008 6:32 pm

    win
    17 points or less
    3.4 per carry or less
    no run over 20
    no pass over 30
3d down sucess 37% or less
3 and outs 38% on all drives
    no TD after sudden change
    score/set up score

As you can see, if you meet all of these you KA!!

  308. sjmacro June 9, 2008 6:34 pm

Welcome back SteveM and Peaches. Take it slow and easy like Liz says.
Just got back from practice and almost left because soccer camp/clinic was being held on the field. Players didn’t show till about 2:40. Five more minutes and we would have left for Waiola shave ice. 🙂 QB’s, Dbs and receivers worked out till a little past four. This was our first look at the summer crew. As we were driving in there was a big guy, thought he was a defensive guy until myki says that’s Greg Alexander. As bhf2 says “thiiick”.
First impressions seeing new QBs is that they have pretty good arms, just have to get in sync with the system and receivers. Repetition, repetition until you do it in your sleep.
Players planning on doing 7 on 7s Wednesday beginning at about 3PM.
BTW we went for shave ice at Waiola afterwards. There should be some way to bring that to the Swamp. It was supposed to have been only 92 with 80% humidity in Gainesville today. sjmacro & myki

  309. Stretch June 9, 2008 6:36 pm

sj – practice is 3 on Wednesday??

  310. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2008 6:40 pm

We believe so. We’re going to get confirmation. The players just found out it was Kamehameha Day.

  311. bonar June 9, 2008 6:40 pm

sorry, my last post was for D1shima!

  312. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 6:40 pm

    sj-macro,

    Good reporting. Domo gracias.

Hmmm…must be ono fo’ raw fish taco.

  313. bonar June 9, 2008 6:41 pm

If anyone can give an update on the hotshot hoops recruit, please do so!

  314. Maverick June 9, 2008 6:41 pm

    Pa-Taaaack!

    Gotta luv him !

    Gotta luv his Ohana!

If O’Canada doesn’t take him, their loss.

    Bring back to Hawaii Nei!

  315. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2008 6:41 pm

    Stretch:
We’re going to run a UH employee on Friday, we think.
And I think I screwed up the dates.
it’s Whitey tomorrow, Chad Yazawa on Wednesday, special guest on Thursday and UH employee on Friday.

  316. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2008 6:42 pm

Hoops recruit: Dayton was just here. He left. He’s got baby duty, although I’m sure he spells “duty” differently.

i hope you didn’t leave anything out.

folks, whitey should be introduced as the “mayor” of maui. i swear he knows everyone in maui and anything about maui

I agree–10 pages would be minimal — but as long as he doesn’t leave out his interesting life on Maui and what he did to become one who knows the land and plants so well.

    Hear, whitey? 🙂

I have encouraged the meeting of whitey and Long Time UH Fan since they are both impressive and accomplished characters on different islands (along with Tom Mui). I await duffer’s bio too.

  318. Stretch June 9, 2008 6:50 pm

ST – let the players know that although Wednesday is a holiday, Florida is not taking Kamehameha Day off from working out. okay okay, I am just bring selfish so I can watch them since I have the day off.

  319. Stretch June 9, 2008 6:51 pm

Good to see you posting tonight SteveM, welcome back!!

  320. bonar June 9, 2008 6:54 pm

I don’t know if I’m being dramatic, but I think getting him here, leading the team to greater heights, and hopefully making the NBA, will turn around the program. I admit, I’ve been holding off on buying season tickets. I like the way that Larry Farmer has continued to support Coach Nash in a low key manner and without much fanfare. You can’t ( I don’t think) argue with Coach Farmer’s ability to coach, experience, ability to spot talent and recruit. I hope he stays.

  321. bonar June 9, 2008 6:54 pm

    Welcome back, Steve!

  322. Loa June 9, 2008 6:57 pm

    evening gang!

SteveM – glad to see you back in action

Stretch/gigi – only korean i know is “ton opso” (not sure about the spelling)

    ST – nice pics grandpa

  323. bonar June 9, 2008 6:57 pm

Interesting that JP seemed to be around the action much of the time and was hard/sure tackler. That could get him to the next level. Potential problem? A relatively slow 40 time. I wonder if a more ideal fit for JP is at linebacker? I don’t believe gaining 10-15 pounds would be that much of problem?

  324. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2008 7:06 pm

    Hey, welcome back, SteveM.
We were all worried about you.

  325. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2008 7:07 pm

Hey, Mouton is really doing a great job this offseason.
Last week, he was in for two plays: He broke up a pass and made an interception.
Today, he broke up another pace. He can sky, and he’s very fast. He might be as good a corner as UH has had in years.

  326. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2008 7:10 pm

Not to get everybody too excited, but I also have a delightful picture of Whitey.

  327. SteveM June 9, 2008 7:11 pm

    Thanks, Stretch! Hello everyone!

Catching up with some of the earlier items…

Great picture of ST and Leila. Best of each of them I have seen. ST — have your Photoshop people split the photo and offer to add other people….

Wena — no new digital camera for ST. No no no …. now that my fever is down, I can hear the warning bells clanging madly 😯

  328. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2008 7:11 pm

Shall we tell Midori7 that Jon Hee and his forearms leave Hawai‘i on Wednesday night?

  329. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 7:14 pm

Isn’t that the same guy from Big Trouble in Little China?

Agree, Mouton is the real deal. As the saying goes, “Glad he’s on our side.”

    Stephen,
“pace”? spelling phonetically now, are we?

  330. Stretch June 9, 2008 7:17 pm

ST – Can you hear the scream from down the road?? you might want to break the news ssslllllooooowwwwwllllllyyyyy.

ST — thank you. Glad to be back. Peaches and I were really touched by your post and the comments from everyone.

    Again, thanks everyone!

this is the place to be…

  332. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2008 7:26 pm

    He’s going to Lowell.

  333. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 7:27 pm

    Hee’s leaving Wednesday?
    Hmmm….

  334. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2008 7:28 pm

Every time I hear “Lowell,” I think of that song that kept playing in NOLA:

Shawty had them Apple Bottom Jeans [Jeans]
Boots with the fur [With the fur]
The whole club was lookin at her
She hit the flo [She hit the flo]
    Next thing you know
Shawty got low low low low low low low low

  335. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2008 7:29 pm

    Hee’s leaving … on a jet plane …

  336. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 7:33 pm

    Who’s Lowell?

    j/k

    Speaking of pictures.
As I’m reading I’m also scanning a bunch of pics for #2 son’s obligatory slideshow.

Would someone please let homey know that I actually did have a full head of hair once? I have proof. And no, these are not daguerreotype photos I’m scanning!

  337. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2008 7:34 pm

Lowell was the mechanic on “Wings.”

  338. gigi-hawaii © June 9, 2008 7:40 pm

ton opso in korean means no money in english. Excellent phrase to know when speaking to your wife.

  339. whitey June 9, 2008 7:40 pm

Sorry about not replying, but am not the best at using the computer. my computer was giving me some flack, then i thought it was finally working, it didn’t. tried again and it was sending, then came blackout. i think ST got the necessary papers.

Stretch, not mentioning you know what. keeping a low profile on that cause no like get in deep kim chee. i already up to my neck and pretty soon will need to call 311 apso.

SteveM, great to see you up and about.

Al, you coming to Maui on Wed? Understand that it might be only for the day, so either lunch or refreshments before you get on the plane. Duffer said he going try catch the same flight.

  340. el guapo June 9, 2008 7:41 pm

That picture is also the same guy from Golden Child.

And there’s a guy who sits behind the bench or scorer’s table at men’s basketball who resembles him too. Or is that actually an unshaven ST?

  341. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2008 7:49 pm

You know, I watched the 3 Ninja movies dozens of times with my kids. Only today do I learn that his name is TumTum not TomTom.

  342. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 7:49 pm

It’s kinda funny that I never had to say that when I used to go bar-hopping. The hostesses seemed to be able to sense pretty quickly that I had no money.

  343. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 7:53 pm

…maybe it was because I would start “would you take”-ing them for the Nickle-hanas from the get-go.

  344. SteveM June 9, 2008 8:02 pm

d1shima — in those days when you used to go bar-hopping, you would have to wear a shirt with pocket and have a small wad of bill in there — or put the money folded on the table (having money clip was too tantaran though…so most used lighters) 🙂

    Errrr…or so I heard anyway 🙂

  345. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 8:02 pm

So what is Steve Wichman doing these days?
I ask here because HE may still not be able to give a coherent answer to the question….

  346. whitey June 9, 2008 8:02 pm

d1, me too. know a couple of words, apso and apo. hahahaaaaaahhhh!!!

  347. gigi-hawaii © June 9, 2008 8:03 pm

hahaha. SteveM, does Peaches know this?

  348. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 8:05 pm

    SteveM.

Oh, I thought it was also because I didn’t have the black Members Only jacket. 😉

  349. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 8:08 pm

I stopped going when those Nickle-hanas got to be $20; can’t imagine what the “deali-o” is nowadays

  350. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 8:12 pm

    whitey,

How many pages are devoted to the stories surrounding those two words? 😀

  351. whitey June 9, 2008 8:22 pm

d1, zero. i going change my image and be one good guy like you and stretch.

  352. Stretch June 9, 2008 8:23 pm

whitey – you are too far down the road to come back and be a good guy like me. hahahahaha

  353. gigi-hawaii © June 9, 2008 8:27 pm

    d1, what are nickle hanas?

  354. gigi-hawaii © June 9, 2008 8:29 pm

Candy bars used to cost just a nickle.

Now, they are a dollar. Milky Way, 3 Mouseketeers

  355. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 8:34 pm

    Stretch,

  357. gigi-hawaii © June 9, 2008 8:36 pm

  358. gigi-hawaii © June 9, 2008 8:36 pm

    oh wait! read d1’s already!

  359. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 8:37 pm

Japanese word for flower = hana

Bar hostess not really interested in you buying her flower; rather you buy her something else…

  360. Stretch June 9, 2008 8:38 pm

    gigi – i already posted.

whitey – it’s going to take more than a nickel to get your good boy image back

  361. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 8:41 pm

    thanks gigi.

I’m honored that it was memorable for you, too. 👿

  362. gigi-hawaii © June 9, 2008 8:43 pm

Stretch, I saw your bio at SteveM’s site. Bravo! You remind me of Garret and his family tradition of attending UH sports events. Does Stretchette join you?

  363. whitey June 9, 2008 8:47 pm

d1, never mind corrupting gigi’s definition of nekko hana. i going buy the dollar size snickers and give it to them and tell them that this is the “real” nekko hana.

stretch, no worry, i already reforming my ways. neva go to bars since last thurs and going have lunch with al and duffer on wed. and believe it or not, i found a nickel today on the 18th tee, so it’s a start. i keeping a straight face, so no make me laugh.

  364. gigi-hawaii © June 9, 2008 8:48 pm

  365. d1shima [sez:] June 9, 2008 8:56 pm

  379. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc June 9, 2008 10:06 pm

HI STEVEM – and welcome back. Hope you’re breathing well.

Just found this on the Athletic Department’s website – let’s X our fingers that the three bring back some heavy metal!

Three University of Hawai`i women’s track and field athletes will participate at this week’s NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 11-14, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. Heptathlete Annett Wichmann will be making her third straight appearance while high jumpers Amber Kaufman and Emily Sheppard are first-time participants.

Wichmann placed ninth at last year’s meet. She will be competing in her fifth NCAA Championship, counting her two appearances at indoor nationals.
Kaufman and Sheppard both qualified after their performances at the Western Athletic Conference Championship last month. Kaufman took gold with a mark of 6-0.5 (1.84m) that ranks third nationally. Sheppard’s mark of 5-11.25 (1.81m), which earned her silver, ranks eighth.

Wichmann, the school record holder in the heptathlon, captured her third consecutive WAC title last month. She currently ranks 17th nationally.

The NCAA Championship begins on Wednesday at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University. Qualifying for high jump starts on Wednesday with the finals on Saturday. The seven-discipline heptathlon runs Friday and Saturday.

STEPHEN: Got your message. Mahalo. .

What has happened with Mark Takai’s request that UH develop a travel policy?

  380. chawan_cut June 9, 2008 10:08 pm

    d1shima,
you are right. he’s the old man from Big Trouble in Little China with Lo Pan & young kim catrall’s green eyes.
wasn’t he also the guy from the Gremlins? Mogwai!

  381. chawan_cut June 9, 2008 10:13 pm

    homey,

Here’s the secret to playing well at darts.

    Drink less than your opponent.

    chawan_cut,

Gonna take your word for it re: Gremlins.

Hold on to your wallet. The news is saying $4.50 by the end of this week here and $5.00 won’t be far behind!

Well, that should inspire some nightmares…..

  388. JaM June 9, 2008 10:30 pm

Hey SteveM glad to hear you are on the road to recovery…

story of the day…called Kuakini at about noon and they said you were in room ####.

Got to the hospital and forgot the room number and called on the information phone. told me you were in room ####. Went upstairs with Brie and she comments “oh it is the room next to popo’s” (my mom was in 470 about a month an half ago).

Look inside and A bed was a gentleman I did not recognize…B bed empty….

went to the nurses’ station and waited…asked a nurse where is SteveM. Answer”Oh I think he was discharged…I state but information just told me he in ####. Response: I guess it ‘s not posted into the system that he left…in the meantime while talking to the nurse..patient down the hall is screaming “doctor, doctor” over and over again…and nobody pays attention!

Steve: I think you may be in better care with Peaches tending over you!

    Hi UHFan808!

One of the OIA coaches commented that if they track is being replaced…they wouldn’t mind taking it..their athletes run on red cinder rocks!

  390. UHfan808 June 9, 2008 10:43 pm

    Liz, wafan, jm2375, WassupDoc, James,
Hello and thank you too for the warm welcome back! Our athletic exploits have been fun but it’s finally time to check in with the Tsaiko ohana. I’ve missed blogging tremendously and have been lurking periodically.

WD, Would be nice to see more attending the games and filling the seats.

    Stretch and Loa,
Yep, I’m so-o-o-o behind on blogging. Finally blogging again was terribly fun last night/early morning. Once you start it’s difficult to stop. lol

  391. UHfan808 June 9, 2008 10:46 pm

Chawan, Can’t sleep yet. No rest for the weary. lol

DPK, Long time no see. Where you been??? (Where I been)

JaM, Hi there! Toastmasters this Thursday?!? Pizza if you RSVP!

  392. Da Punchbowl Kid June 9, 2008 10:52 pm

Jacob will do good in the CFL, I believe. His hustle and his work ethic are his biggest assets. That and the fact the he can flat out knock the snot outta ball carriers, recievers, and QBs. Go get ’em Patek!

Hey UHFan808, I feel ya on the being behind thing. I missed an earlier comment about SteveM, and the “mob” tried to tear me to shreds. I gotta be careful what I say, and make sure I don’t miss a thing, or “they’re” going get me.

  393. JaM June 9, 2008 10:53 pm

UHFan808: Will try to be there…12 noon? Thanks but no thanks for the pizza…

Article about how recruits in Texas go to a number of summer camps in the hope to be noticed.

With so much talent in the area and so few Division I scholarships, the players who use the summer wisely have a better chance at one of those coveted spots.

“There are over 1,200 high schools in Texas,” Texas coach Mack Brown said. “And only about 350 kids a year get football scholarships, so the competition can be pretty stiff.”

Dinner is just about ready, but I saw a word mentioned in Posts 392 and 394 which brought back some wonderful memories. DrDoc and I were actively involved in Toastmasters from1980 to 1990 on the Big Island, O`ahu and Los Angeles – Santa Monica, to be exact. I learned a lot about organizing ideas which still comes in handy today.

GARRET: Best of luck on your proposal. Will you be able to continue to work at home & telecommute if the results are positive?

BUDGET UPDATE: If there are UH Capital (Construction) or Repairs & Maintenance projects you’d like to see happen, now is the time to submit your “wish list” to the appropriate administrator in a particular department. The University System will be turning over its budget requests in a few weeks to the Regents so that they can discuss and approve – at their September meeting – the next biennium budget which begins on July 1, 2009 and ends June 30, 2011. It then goes to the Governor’s office where it will be analyzed along with all the other Cabinet departmental requests as well as projected revenues. Sometime after the November election and before January 1, 2009, it will be submitted to the Legislature.

It’s too far away to be more specific than that. James should be able to let us know when that happens.

Night All – very early Tuesday start for me.

Well now that we have a little time on our hands I thought it would be fun for us to select the “WARRIOR BEAT STARTING LINEUP”

I will list the position and the players then everyone vote for their pick for the starting player then one for a backup.
    I’ll start with the QB.

    Shane Austin

    Tyler Graunke
    Bryce Kalauokaaea
    Kiran Kepo`o

    gigi,

Have fun in Japan! Just a heads-up, Japan’s airport security rules and regs are the same as US TSA’s. And their enforcement is the same. Funny story: I was traveling back from Okinawa to Seoul by way of a connecting flight in Fukuoka. At the Okinawa airport I bought a sample package of Okinawan Awamori (distilled rice liquor) of five different bottles packed in a nice wooden framed box, in a cardboard sleeve. I had no clue what the total volume was for each of the five bottles. The Okinawa airport security personnel didn’t say anything as I carried it throught the security check point and onto the plane. But on my connecting flight from Fukuoka to Seoul, the Fukuoka security folks made me open the nicely wrapped package, inspected the volume of each bottle and determined that each contained 100ml. They would let me take it on the plane if I could fit all five bottles in a quart sized plastic bag. All five bottles fit snuggly in the bag. I asked what I should do with the wooden framed box. The said I could take it with me or throw it away. Aha I thought… so I went to the restroom and quickly repackaged my sweet Okinawan Awamori in the original wooden framed box and stuck it back in my carry on bag. Ha!…

How long will you be in Guam? I know some people who went to work on Guam for the Navy. They stayed for a week or more.

    UHfan808,

Hi! After not seeing you on the blog for quite some time, it has been great to see you posting so much lately! I’m just sorry that I’ve been so busy and hadn’t been able to blog while you were blogging.

My wife and kids are doing well, we all have been enjoying our family time together. Faith got a number of cool presents for her birthday, but their favorite has been Monopoly Jr., which my kids seem to love playing with Lori and me. They have given up their bedtime video for the game, which means I have even less blog time because I used to blog then.

I hope that your kids are doing well. Do they have summer plans?

  422. Garret June 10, 2008 4:20 am

    WassupDoc,

My company is fully funded, including allowing me to get paid for working at home, through the end of the year. If this proposal is successful, then it will fund us for the first 6 months of 2009–the government won’t get around to starting this work until Jan. 2009.

There are 2 other proposals going out later this month, then we can work on our current contracts and simply wait to hear about the judging of the 3 proposals. If 1 proposal succeeds, we’ll be fine for awhile. If 2 succeed, we’ll expand and a former student of mine with a wife with cancer will be getting a Visa and a health plan (that is an extra motivation for him and me). If 3 succeed then we’ll expand.

If we do a good job on our current contract, then in January we’ll go to Phase II which will fully fund my company for 2 years. It would be nice not to have to stress over things for that long! My company could also get bought sometime or other…but I can’t talk about that on the blog.

  428. bighilofan2 June 10, 2008 5:50 am

    Pomai,

I got it from da hosses mout da Troy Waite is da front runnah fo now, but goin fade around 2 weeks befo da game in 81 days.

did you see this mornin’s HA article about da Ethics Commn gonna investigate UH. Wat Horsy poo! A reader’s comment to Ferd’s article points out the dilemma:

“In an earlier article in The Advertiser, Dan Mollway, executive director of the state Ethics Commission, WAS QUOTED as saying he advised UH back in December that the “unique situation” (i.e., UH going to a major bowl game for the first time) justified spouses and family members of some officials travelling at UH (taxpayers) expenses. I do not believe I misread the article, so why is Dan Mollway and the Ethics Commission involved in the review/investigation to determine if ethics laws were violated? It is ridiculous and unethical to have Dan Mollway investigate himself. Another white-wash job in the making. Since the Ethics Commission’s advice to UH in December seems to be partially responsible for this fiasco, the matter should be investigated by an independant commission or special prosecutor appointed by the Governor or the Attorney General and let the chips fall where they may.”

SO I SAY: Mollway been in Hawaii Ethics Biz for 3 decades? How much Ethics cleanup we get? Meetings? yah. Speeches? choke. Bottomline? idiot decishuns all ovah.

an you like investigate? Wat? Who? They all get excuses. I wuzn’t dare but I already get dare ansahs. ‘Wuz Herman’s Fault.’ Owah, ‘he said Dan said i could.’
Owah, I relied on Herman Frazier. Da bradda wen call me up an persunally invited me fo pahty.’ Owah, Herman said can can. Owah, how about this from Dan, “I relied on Herman and my decision was based on what Herman said?” An UH is thinking…” geez, no can talk stink about Herman, he gonna sue us.”

Gmme a break. Dis investigation going noweah. A senate investigashun gonna go da same place.

Wat? Yu like investigatin Iraq/Afghan/Pakistan too? All yu need to no is get choke sand, we been spending choke choke bucks, we still dare, yoah great grankids gonna no wea Camp Balad stay, an gas gonna be $4.50 a gallon ovah heah by da time I go Florida. Yu no need doctah degree owah one investigashun fo no dat.

I can smell da hossy poo all da way ova heah. An dis is suppoze to doo doo guud fo da memories ah da team dis year, learn an gro forevah? sorry…. I disagree an i took da time to explain why i feel dis way. but you’re entitled to your opinion too. i just think its a waste of time and takes me away from tinkin warm fuzzy tauts. :D…. imho.

  429. bighilofan2 June 10, 2008 6:08 am

but we shuud do sometin. das weah i like JD come in, make da speech, go write da policy but make sewer da policy get ruum for put me on da plane (spell my name right so I get pass security) :D:

  439. whitey June 10, 2008 6:42 am

you know the “markets” on the dark side started at 5, then one of them decided 10 and it spread to the universe. then we had another market boost to 20 which took off like a rocket. now all the markets they get together and “fix the price” to 40. I going talk to my friend, bhf2, and see if i can file a complaint about price fixing. although the dark side markets are trying this new level, i think it going die because loa and stretch not going support it. hahahahaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!

  440. bighilofan2 June 10, 2008 6:47 am

plus whitey, now i stay tinkin for ask ST for send me yoah bio so i can make da intro. 😀
