Wow with some juggling of the pairs, UH COULD beat Pepperdine later this season! Wong will just have to be sneaky and maybe even split Cook and Tiegs to have two strong pairs instead of just one really great one and Concede the match at flight one and maybe Put Longo/Long there ( no offense to them) against Pepp’s seemingly unbeatable duo of Stewlow/Dykstra.

  5. WhyWhat March 16, 2014 10:40 am

That would be sandbagging… thats a big no no.

  6. formerlywarriorfan March 16, 2014 10:43 am

Long beach did it all the way to a championship last year ( some Injuries to Pepp helped though)
They were more ridiculous though playing the undefeated pair with Janisa Johnson down at flight 5!!!

  7. Brandon. March 16, 2014 10:43 am

Shocked at how well Taylor and spieler are doing. Expected them to be good, but not this good. Let’s See if they can pull off this upset

  8. LC March 16, 2014 10:58 am

    sandbagging isn’t a crime. 🙂

  9. WhyWhat March 16, 2014 11:04 am

Who said it was a crime?

  10. Kalihifc March 16, 2014 11:22 am

Spieler-Taylor beat Dykstra-Strehlow! Now in the finals against Pep2!

  11. formerlywarriorfan March 16, 2014 11:22 am

Holy damn Speiler/Nikki Taylor just took out Pepp’s unbeatable duo of Strewlow/dykstra!!!

  12. formerlywarriorfan March 16, 2014 11:23 am

This is gonna help Nikki’s indoor game soo much, but she’s the one I’m most surprised by.

Spieler would be a beach volleyball superstar if she was 5′ 10 so she’s not a surprise.

  13. lkapulani March 16, 2014 11:32 am

5……………dat would b called stategy………itz about winning…………itz about how smart da coach is……………every coach and every sport does it……………

  14. turfwar March 16, 2014 11:39 am

Much Mahalo to those keeping track for the rest of us. And amazing run by the Sandbows. Very inspirational. May be time for even the casual fan to check them out at Waikiki Beach this week.

  15. WhyWhat March 16, 2014 12:36 pm

    Pepperdine Larsen/Woolever def. Spieler/Taylor
    21-18, 16-21, 15-10

  16. Cindy Luis March 16, 2014 12:36 pm

    6. Johnson and Jackson played at 5 most of the season. agree with the 14 comment. It is strategy.

  17. Cindy Luis March 16, 2014 12:37 pm

    15. scores easily available online gave the link was listed above.

  18. Cindy Luis March 16, 2014 12:39 pm

    13. Spieler is really really good, even at 5-5. Taylor loves her pairs partner. and this is going to help Taylor’s indoor game. She is so athletic and a natural

  19. formerlywarriorfan March 16, 2014 12:51 pm

Darn so close, proud of Nikki and Katie though for coming in second,
One thing to look forward to , UH beach team only loses Karissa Cook but gains Koelsch/Guinasso and Schreiber from Germany for next year. While Pepperdine and USC lose a lot of their best players! Pepp will lose Larsen, Racich, Woolever, Cook and Adelhem. USC losses Burnham, Siljkovic, Fournier, and Hirschman.

  20. formerlywarriorfan March 16, 2014 12:57 pm

Forgot to mention Greeley and Kahakai who have the potential to be good beach players as well. Future is bright for Scott Wong’s team for sure.

  21. mainlandgal March 16, 2014 6:23 pm

#5 — wouldn’t call it sandbagging, it’s just strategy. Pepperdine switched up some pairs/flights going into the pairs tourney. UH had a couple of injuries to take into consideration this time around (Tiegs and Urban) so some pairs/flights were different. There is so much more into the Sand game besides just the skill and mental game played on the court. All in all, it seems as though the Sandbows had a great showing at the tournament.

  22. WhyWhat March 16, 2014 8:02 pm

    Sandbagging is the term.

  23. formerlywarriorfan March 16, 2014 8:27 pm

Yes and to many of us it’s not a big “no no”.
To me it’s just being smart and doing what you can to get an advantage and ultimately win.

  24. WhyWhat March 16, 2014 8:56 pm

I assumed there were rules in place to prevent sandbagging like in college tennis. But since SV is a relatively new sport I guess there are no rules in place to prevent it?? not sure. IF it’s so smart why isn’t everyone playing there 1’s and 2’s in the 3/4/5 positions… Is SW not being “smart”?

  25. WhyWhat March 16, 2014 9:15 pm

Found this on the AVCA site.

    c.

Players must play in order of ability. The line-up shall always be based on order of ability.
“Matching up” is prohibited. Players must compete in order of ability with the best
doubles team on the team playing at the No. 1 position, the second best at No. 2, and so
    on through all positions.

  26. lkapulani March 17, 2014 10:14 am

    #26 exactly……………and if a coach believes dat

#26………….exactly………..if a coach feels da #3 team is playing better than #1 at da time of a dual or tourn……………den he/she may change da order according to their ability at dat specific time…….it is still called strategy and not sand bagging……….da coach must turn in rosters i believe an hour prior to matches………..ea coach does not know what the other coach has done……….sandbagging is wen a low handicapped golfer plays bad on purpose prior to a tourn for a few rdz and turnz in these higher scores to their hdcp chairman to raise their hdcp for dat upcoming tourn so they my participate with a higher hdcp and take advantage of da field……………..datz sandbagging……………oooopsssssssssss sorry…………..datz cheating………r calling coaches stategies…………… cheating?

  27. WhyWhat March 17, 2014 10:57 am

    But come on… Switching #3 Long/Long with #1 Cook/Tieggs……………………….
Really……………… Thats obvious. And if you think that should happen then your argument is with SW for not doing it…………………….

  28. WhyWhat March 17, 2014 11:04 am

Same logic. Placing your number 1 team down in the line up portraying they aren’t as good as they really are is the same thing… Why do you use golf??? Try tennis almost the same format as SV and they have rules to prevent “sandbagging”

  29. lkapulani March 17, 2014 11:56 am

like i said…..r u calling do coach a cheater????????????? any team can do it……………if dey dont………datz dere prob………….at dis level…………coaches get paid 4 winning……..and uh is 5 1nd 1…………ea coach can do da same…………a coach would rather go 1 and 1…rather than 0 and 2??????????? wat would rather be if u were da coach………….and ur job is depending on it……..again itz stategy………………like i said earlier………..i believe rosters are turned in to officials an hour prior to da dual matches………..u can correct me about dat……….i apologize if i am mistaken……..if true ea coach does not know wat da oder coach did…………..dont know about u………again………. i wood rather b 1 and 1……….rather dan 0 and 2…..and keep my job…………….

  30. Cindy Luis March 17, 2014 12:39 pm

There are rules in place to prevent ‘sandbagging’
There’s also something about not switching your teams up during a tournament, except for injury, which is what happened when Tiegs was not able to play late Saturday and they moved up Riggs to 1, used Tucker, etc.
Wong said that because they had started the pairs tournament Saturday without Tiegs (first round was Saturday) She could not return for Sunday.

  31. WhyWhat March 17, 2014 3:42 pm

Understood Cindy. Someone previously mentioned conceding the 1st flight by putting #3 Longo/Long in the first flight therefore dropping #1 Cook and Tiegs. What I was arguing was that, that type of “strategy” might be against the rules, especially since Cook and Tiegs have already established themselves as the #1 UH team.

  32. Cindy Luis March 17, 2014 4:26 pm

    31. see new thread on rules
I guess they are established but it’s only 2 weekends. If Tiegs’ back continues to be a problem, they likely go with the tandems they used Sunday.
