Caryn Kunz, who is Inoke’s neighbor, said the water was 4 feet high in the Funaki house. They supposedly lost almost everything. Furniture is all ruined, too.

Off Topic…
Here on the NorthShore, we have repeatedly informed, complained and even had stidies done about the flood potential and danger to the Federal, State and County. Guess what? We got a lot of nods and “I know” from all of them. Seems like no one wants to take the problem and try to find a solution. Otake River and Paokawila seems to be the most problem areas but since the Bachelor family suffered lost of lives (4 or 5 if memory serves me) nothing significant has been done.
The are of Haleiwa, by Kawamata Brs. repair shop was the area in question where the houses was swept away by that killer storm and it was the same area this time again. Do we have to have more deaths before dredging or some type of remediation gets done?
Anyhoo, done with my rant for the day.
Got get my butt in gear and start cleaning up the houe and yard. Lucky we live high up and didn’t get no water damage. The farmers have been wiped out though.

So sorry to hear about Inoke’s family’s home! Too bad that I’m sure it would be an NCAA violation for any fan (or even the school!) to give anything to his family to recover from the flooding. If the state does stuff for all the families that were flooded, then they can help Inoke’s family along with the other families. I wish that things had been taken care of a long time ago like NorthShoreFan said they were asking.
LSU couldn’t do anything for the homes of the families hurt by Katrina from what I read.
Garret- re Funakis and all – perhaps donations to the Red Cross or Salvation Army or a church or somesuch would work.
Especially if insurance does not cover them.

I just saw your post at the end of the last blog. Thank you for the good wishes, and I hope that Monday goes as well as yesterday for my company. Sometime or other I need to update Momo…I forgot to mention anything when I talked with him yesterday!
The kids are dealing with Katie’s loss, though it is hard. A couple of times Faith has burst into tears and has had fits of crying. Mika says all through the day that she misses Katie. But we’ve been talking with them and they seem to be okay.

Aren’t there enough problems already? How many families got walloped by the weather? My heart goes out to all of them.
It is truly refreshing and encouraging to see our student athletes doing so well. There are so few who make it to the big paychecks, but these young men carry the proper message: get your education, get your degree and become a valuable member of the community. These guys already are.
Their degrees is the only thing these young men or women have control over, for most of them, it’s just a pipe dream. Even the best of them are just an injury away for this dream to end in a flash.
Big Kudos to all of them, including Big Mack.

Actually, I think it’s to show the public, legislators and especially student-athletes how important an education is to the coaching staff.
However, getting a degree is of little value in the long run if there is no commitment to creating a positive environment for our families and our communities.

Going to a bar doesn’t mean having to drink alcohol. Cannot speak for others on this blog such as LizK and Jason who also don’t drink, but I usually go through three or four O`Douls at $3.50 to $4 a pop as well as juice or coffee. Bars don’t suffer $$$ losses from my patronage and they sure don’t have to worry about my being stopped for a DUI and getting them into trouble for serving me too many drinks.

With the weather being what it is, it’s perfect for sitting on the sofa with the laptop and getting some blog time in…there’s always a silver lining somewhere.
Glad to have the opportunity to reflect on the past regular season. Everyone has roller coastered along with the team. I’m certainly happy that the ride has been on the up-swing at the end and clearly shows the overall improvement from the start to now.
This morning, I’m reflecting on what went on with the Tsaiko Ohana. “Proud to be” would be a great understatement. Lots of comments have already been made about the hands on things we accomplished in the first half of 2008…NOLA, iTouch, championship bracelets, Cooke field redo, JUGS machines, anniversary party…amazing stuff for a bunch of folks who barely knew each other in cyberspace and had no organized structure. We used the 6F’s in sight at all times with heavy emphasis on Friends and Food.
With all that’s been already said about the team and the first half of the Tsaiko year, I’ve focused on the Tsaiko’s 2nd half of 2008. I will remember the prideful surrogate family as D1 and Bulla proudly shared the exploits of their athletic sons. I also fondly remember the T-gates that dotted the Warrior schedule. We were having so much Fun (another F), that we started having T-gates for aways games!!! Kekoa, are the folks over at the Bayview GC still asking about having us back?!! We were rocking the place so much that other visitors were asking if they could join our group!
Our steady stream of T-gates at the cabana was interrupted by a botched reservation that sent us up to the upper field in a “steady stream” of rain. People got wet…got muddy…but, there were no unhappy faces. The collective “fun energy” of a Tsaiko tailgate could run a community for a month, and then some. Phenomenal
Coming to the homegame event was a study in Tsaiko-ship. Diversity with a capital D. Not only folks dropping in from the neighbor islands, but also from the mainland and internationally (TChahng for example). Not only guys, but great Tsaikettes too. Not only the well aged, but also the talented future in Brie, Ukuleleboi, and Jason. Not only the veterans, but also the newcomers like Curveball, momo, J Force, HeinekenHealer, Nalani and many, many more. No longer are we suprised to have 60-70 people there. The one constant is the Fuud. There’s always enough to max everyone out (even with a contingent of Marines next door) and it tastes better than any restaurant! The folks working in the office and the security posts always smile when they see us coming. Yes, I’ve arranged for the reservations (and I botched one), but the real thanks go to folks like Kazz and SteveM who put so much energy to organizing the outings. To be sure, there are others….mahalos.
Don’t get me wrong. This not a utopia cuz we’re not perfect individuals. We’re common folks with common flaws. But, we have incredible times together because of the respect given and taken amongst all of us. So, as the end of 2008 draws to a close, Betty and I send out our “bottom of our hearts thanks to all of you.”
I’ve touched on the hi-lites. As in any family, there are distressed times too. For those who are facing the hard times with financial or physical problems, we continue to support in various ways, and with the powerful use of prayer.

After the torrential rain emptied the orange seats during the first game, there was a long delay before kick-off. The PA announcer comes on and says something to the effect of, “Hawaii football fans, this game is being telecast across the nation by FoxSports. Let’s show the viewers the way we support football in Hawaii by moving out of the Blue sections down to the Orange level seats.” π
Koakane and I waited for the resulting stampede down to the exposed seating area…and waited….and waited….

Question for Liz (or other DVR owners) – can I DVR one thing and watch something else live or does it have to be on the DVR already? I’m confused. π

For Dish DVR owners, you can DVR 2 satellite channels (and 1 over-the-air network) at once while watching a different channel. I never bothered to set up my antenna because I don’t need to record more than 2 channels at a time.
By the way, I think you mentioned yesterday that you just signed up with Dish. Did you know that you can get Cinemax for a penny a year for 2 years? You can just call them or go online to get it.
No one answers at Murphy’s and there’s only a machine on at Champion’s. What other townside sports bars are there?

There will be flooding everytime there’s a heavy rainstorm.
The people who live/farm there, KNOW it. They are the ones who are

Surely there will be an organized effort started to help the Funaki Ohana and all others. Keep your eyes and ears open and report it on the blog so we can all contribute what we can to help as many as possible.

I had a bit of a dizzy spell this morning at our math competition, I think because I only had a banana for breakfast, and I didn’t get much sleep. I feel better now, but I don’t want to take the chance that I get ill at the game. I’ve had a lot of things on my plate recently, especially with finals next week, so I think my body’s telling me to slow down. As such, I’m making my ticket available, first come, first served. It’s with the students (Mānoa Maniacs), although they don’t really check for validated student ID at the Stan Sheriff Center (although they are supposed to). Third row aisle seat (right next to the band).

Great to hear about the 18 grads, and the positive impact Lafaele and Kalilimoku are having on our community. I was stoked that Lafaele committed to UH, and have been a huge fan ever since.

Seeing that the young man is down, I don’t think it’s a good idea to continually admonish him for any of the off the field issues he may be stigmatized by this year… Or handout any admonishments to any of the players for that matter. There’s nobody that feels worse about what has happened this year “than Tyler himself”. In a way I think he’s really contrite and sorry for letting his school, team mates and fans down…and in a way I think he’s suffered enough. To Tyler, I say, at this point, I like to see you go out with your head held high. And maybe act like a surrogate to the new Warrior recruits…and impart some sort of guidance and wisdom to them so they don’t make the mistakes you’ve made. This is called making the best of a bad situation. And continuing the role of “Warrior” and team player. Best wishes to the Tyler family and supporters, for I’ll always remember the young man filling in for Colt admirably last year and really “clicking” and “on fire”.

Just got back to my seat after a little excitement.
Rain has been between steady and torrential all day. I missed the tornado warning because the water was about to flood the back rooms of the house (shades of 2006 and our sandbagging!). I sent Ukuboi and bro out into the rain to trench and build a protective barrier to encourage the water to flow towards the storm drain at the front.
They worked hard and we are ok for now.
Stevo’s (#2 son) friends live in Hanapepe and they said the twister was around the Pakala- Kaumakani area but they did not see it. The boys are out cruising to look at the river and take pix of the flooding.
Half of Waimea town was flooded out when I went to the store earlier.

Very cool that Coach Mack is going to walk with the UH faculty. He is a ‘professor’ & does so much to ensure that his charges are graduating. Glad to see that Chancellor Hinshaw is recognizing Coach Mack for that.

Another Christmas project that comes to mind after reading that Brad Kalilimoku was spending his own funds for the Speed & Quickness program he runs in Wai’anae. At the soggy T-Gate on Richardson field, I put some kala in a can collecting for a Tsaiko cause. Could we use those funds to help Brad’s after-school program? If he graduates in Dec. and doesn’t play football for UH after graduation, does the NCAA still care if we provide funds or supplies for this program?

They look very unprepared, their kills look very weak and they play tentative all around. I thought Shoji would have a better gameplan or preparation for this match, but the poor girls don’t seem to know what they’re doing right now.

tough to win when we hit .05 for the match…..we need more size on the line- don’t know how many blocks Stanford ended up with but it was obviously a lot more than we got…well, next season Tuaniga at 6’2 and a season Ferrel returns at 6’1 to compete at OH. I’d like to see Aneli at Libero next year to keep a taller front line to be game ready when regionals start…watched three regionals so far, Na Wahine is the shortest team by far

My feeling on why it has been so hard for the Wahine to get really deep in the NCAA playoffs: lack of competition in the WAC. For the longest time, the Wahine’s win streak was the big story…but when nobody in the conference can beat you, you really aren’t getting battle-tested. NMSU has added some level of competition, but too many of the WAC teams do not require the Wahine to be at their best to win. So often the matches are sweeps with most of the games not close…with the Wahine not having to play their best because the games are not in doubt.
The Wahine can start the season strong and show that they are as good or better than the top teams around the country at that point in time. However, when they start WAC play they aren’t being tested each game and so they aren’t being pushed to improve in close games like other teams. So, teams like Stanford or Texas improve through the season due to their tough conference season…at the end of the season they are battle-tested and the Wahine haven’t reached their full potential like the other teams have been forced to reach.
Anyway, this is strictly my opinion and I’m not an expert in volleyball. I watched a good number of games while I was a student at Texas and I watch the Wahine play every chance I get. I think that the first few rounds in the NCAA tournament aren’t hard to get past because they are clearly the better team (thanks to the seeding process), just like during the WAC season…but when you get to the final 8 teams, the challenge jumps significantly and that level of competition is far above what the Wahine see in the WAC.

Garret: I see no reason to disagree with that. It might not be the only reason why we haven’t been able to get over that hump, but I certainly think the weak competition in the WAC doesn’t help much.
Still, we did reach the Elite Eight. That’s nothing to sneeze at. I guess we’ve been spoiled for so long that it’s Final Four or bust. Considering how women’s volleyball has grown in the past ten years, I don’t think that’s as realistic as it used to be.
Yeah – Congratulations to Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford for winning the heisman TROPHY! After all, it is a TROPHY contest! Personally, right now I’d prefer a fancy H Kymry kookie instead, or some freshly baked chocolate chip w/ pecan kookies…. π π― π

You have a valid point with the WAC play, but I think it goes a little deeper. Our tall, European pipeline seems to have dried up and the Wahine were by far the shortest team in the final eight, yet all night long the hit right into the Stanford All-American trees, instead of finding a way around it, hardly any quick sets at all. There didn’t seem to be any gameplan for the Cardinals. On top of that, you add five times as many errors and you get beat by NMSU, as has happened.
The Wahine had no fighting spirit tonight, like last night and no visible adjustments were made. Maybe Shoji is burned out or they were just happy to make the final eight, I don’t know, but something sure was way off.
Stanford is good, but not that much better than Hawaii.
I also agree with the discussion from Garret and Jason on Wahine V-ball. It’s interesting to consider the second part of Jason’s statement, “Still, we did reach the Elite Eight….”
That, is the question. Shoji really develops players and gets them to perform at a very high level. But UH is not getting the top tier athletes. You can only go so far with heart and hustle, and team play. You’re not going to win out consistently (at least four top matches to get through the elite eight) going against 6-3 and 6-5 players with the same heart, hops, and team play as your 5-10 team. Yeah, you can win on some, maybe several nights, but…. Competition helps. But talent can not be overlooked.

I agree that talent is also important. One thing to consider is that there isn’t a professional league for women’s volleyball in this country, which changes some of the factors for recruiting. When UH recruits against Stanford and other teams, academics seem to come into play much more–from what I’ve read and noticed by what the women athletes say, plus I notice the women graduate at a much higher rate than the men.
There seem to have been a lot of recruiting battles where UH and Stanford were among the finalists for a top recruit and the top recruit picks Stanford. Part of that is due to the higher level of competition, and part of that is probably due to academics. Many of those athletes are from California and by staying closer to home their families can watch them play. However, I can also think of several top-tier recruits from Hawaii that have gone to Stanford and absolutely *killed* UH in the NCAA playoffs.
I’ve also seen first-hand the facilities at Texas, Stanford and UH…and they really aren’t close. In fact, the facility difference might be even greater than it is for football…
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you in the storm, especially Inoke and his family. Try to stay dry over there!

Jason is right, elite eight is not bad at all. A lot of programs would be thrilled to get there. USC and UCLA are no longer there. To make the final four and especially winning it, is not an easy task anymore, It seems, right now at least, just a few schools get all the top recruits and they take turns winning the thing
UCLA was tops for a long time, but is down for awile now. There’s still hope for us.

i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again.
in volleyball and basketball, both genders, we will attract some of the fab 50 players. however, not enough to field a consistent elite squad. recruiting in volleyball has become tougher because although there are more quality players there also is an abundance of quality programs unlike the glory days of past.
for us, so remotely located in the middle of the pacific ocean we need to take advantage of what we can offer and who we offer an education to. we should go back to the much scrutinized european markets. sure we need to do our homework, but, as tony tuioti has proven, that given the right person with the right contacts anything is possible.
we also should be tapping the orient and asian areas for student/athletes.
why shouldn’t baseball in fact, go after the puerto ricans, koreans, and japanese???
we need new vision and a concerted effort. shouldn’t the other coaches take a cue from mack and tony????

Watching Chizzy’s You Tube, it’s interesting that even if the play goes inside, if closed, he makes a fast adjustment and heads for daylight on the outside. With his speed, he can out run most linebackers and corners/safeties.
Wonder what causes so many of the Warrior ball carriers to run “inside” toward opponents rather than take the “outside” route which appears to be more open, most of the time.
What I didn’t see is his blocking skills/techniques. I was hoping that he would match Bradley Randle’s skill in blocking, but Pauoa Boy’s cross street neighbor is UNLV bound. I found that choice very interesting in that he could have selected a number of PAC 10 teams instead of a MWC team.
Was it reported early in the recruiting season that 6 or 7 of the top HS QBs chose to attend non-BCS conference schools? With more athletes making this decision, there will be greater “parity” amongst schools and we will see greater competition and fewer and fewer “unbeaten teams” at season’s end.
This can continue the fuel for a “play-off” system to replace the BCS. Why does ESPN securing the rights to televise the BCS for the next 4 got to do with not eliminating the BCS system? Do we want a TV afflilate dictating what college football can do and cannot do?

Congratulations to the Wahine VB for reaching the final 8. Height may make a difference for them, but imho it is the coaches responsibility to get the “team” ready. You notice “team”, not individual. The Wahines were a team last weekend, but lost it and team went out the window.
Also, you really have to consider that in the past ten years, women’s volleyball at the other universities has really developed. I mean, look at Purdue. They hadn’t had a decent volleyball program for years, once their Hall of Fame coach left. Now look, they are a solid top 25 team. It used to be the same schools every single year β Florida, Hawaiβi, USC, Stanford, etc. Now we’re really seeing other teams step up with programs of their own, and it’s getting harder to recruit.

nebraska came back from 2-0 in sets, and 9-3 in set 5 to win…Washington controlled the first two sets then they went into passive mode from set 3 and the huskers kept the pressure on and won out….i hope ron lee watched this match, can’t play not to lose and hope the match ends soon, the team got to keep on bringing it…

shoji found out that the quick low set against a quick big block doesn’t work unless the pass is sharp, the set is on line and fast and the hitter is ready…something wasn’t up to speed because we got stuffed big time…all four regionals, the sets were high and the hitters got their kills but then again their hitters were tall…Nebraska OH, a lefty is 6’5…Texas OH is 6’4 and the MBs are 6’5 and 6’4..we got three wahines at 5’10 or less

I think Jason said this earlier. The quick-set game can work but needs to work precisely and efficiently. Once the passing game broke down, the rest of the strategy didn’t have a chance. The high sets work with towering hitters that can adjust and play the power game. Thus, the top four seeds advance. IMHO π

I do not personally think that getting taller (6′ 3″+) women for the vb is that hard for UH, but the problem lies with whoever is responsible for recruiting for the wahines. we have an asst coach from MN, the IA player of the year, player from Chicago, etc. What the wahines may be lacking is someone who stays on top of the recruiting all year around. I’ll bet that there are lots of talented women who would love playing at UH and in front of huge crowds, but don’t come here because they were never recruited.
I only noticed that because the commercial came on. It’s kind of a junk game. I don’t see much from 55 or 99.
Last night I watch most of the De La Salle game winning the NorCal HS Championship. DLS doesn’t have the athletes as in previous years but the coaching is still tops. The announcers marveled at how there were no missed tackles by the DLS team. Almost every time, the defender squared up, hit their man, and wrapped up. Even the smaller players. That is a skill that is needed at all levels of play. IMHO π― π π―

What other news sources failed to show, or even mention about the the devastation the La’ie community has faced, her blog shows pictures of residents in waist high water trying to recover items from their homes.If it wasn’t for ST blog and mention about what happened to the Funaki home, then I wouldn’t have know how bad it really was out in the La’ie community. Reading immature remarks by the Mayor ( in a SB interview he proclaimed the damages start off at 2.7 million ) and very little from the governor or Congressmen. The words and actions that should be introduced have so far been so oblivious to the higher ups. For it is incumbent that FEMA should be stepping in and helping the communities. And residents, like the Funakis, should be assisted in applying for federal assistance. What’s a shame is that the perilious conditions as these require better leadership by our government. And so far I don’t see this happening.

Koakane: Those guys from Kenya always win in unbelievable record times. I’m so proud of my son but have to admit last year when he expressed interest in running the marathon and decided to do it last year I had to stop and wonder if he is really MY son?!?! Can’t even imagine wanting to wake up at 3am to go run 26 something miles through the humid & rainy streets of HNL. I just don’t get it, but I couldn’t be more proud of him. At 13 he finished very high last year in his age group and beat his dad. His dad started training in August this year in hopes of beating his son this year, but if the tracking site is accurate it isn’t gonna happen! π Son is way ahead & should be finishing soon. Waiting for the call now!

Congrats shout out to my son #2 just finished the HNL Marathon in 4:47! If the site is correct it says he finished 7th in the 14 and under age group! His dad hasn’t passed the 40k marker yet. They are waiting for him at finish line.

Jason Campbell got his throwing arm hurt. They’re looking at him closely, but he seems okay. As he was taking some warm-up tosses, so was #5 in the background. I think Campbell will continue to play.
