Early passing looking good. They’ve run some things that Shoji mentioned they’ve been working on. Taylor hit left, right and 3-meter. Adolpho on the quick in the middle she doesn’t usually run.

I just watched Riverside defeat Cal Poly in five sets. So Riverside got its first conference victory.

10. We didn’t need Cal Poly to lose. However, Riverside is not to be dismissed as inconsequential any more. Cal Poly defeated Davis on the road in three straight sets whereas Hawaii lost there in five sets. Riverside has improved considerably so Hawaii had better not underestimate Riverside when playing there next week.
As to the answer for your question, the only way that Hawaii can win the Big West is to win all the rest of its matches, beating Northridge decisively and for Long Beach to upset UCSB a second time, this time on its own home court.

Cindy, why is Jmy incorrect? UCSB has the tiebreaker against CSUN, so if UCSB wins out the rest of the season and if CSUN does the same, they would be tied for first place and then UCSB would win the conference. UCSB has three more matches to play and UCSB already beat Fullerton tonight, so UCSB is actually 11-2. Northridge has only two more matches to play, so both teams if they win the rest of the season would be 14-2 even. You probably forgot to count tonight’s UCSB victory.

To clarify all of the above on getting the AQ bid, if UCSB wins out, it will get the AQ regardless of what UH and CSUN do. If UCSB wins out and CSUN wins out, the will have identical W-L records and UCSB will win the AQ via tiebraker–being 2-0 against CSUN.
If UCSB wins out and UH wins out, UCSB wins the conference title outright as it will have two losses in conference vs. three for UH and CSUN (assuming CSUN wins all its matches other than the one against UH).
If UH wins out, CSUN wins all remaining non-UH matches, and UCSB wins all but one of its remaining matches, then all three teams will have identical conference records. The conference tiebreaker formula says that teams will be ranked based on W-L records against the other tied teams. UCSB will be 3-1, UH will be 2-2 and CSUN will be 1-3. UCSB gets the AQ.
For UH to win the AQ, it must win out and UCSB must lose two more matches in conference. UH and CSUN will have identical records (assuming CSUN wins its remaining non-UH matches), and 1-1 record against each other. The next tiebreaker is record against common opponents beginning at the top of the conference standings. That would be UCSB with four losses. UH will be 1-1 against UCSB and CSUN 0-2. UH gets the AQ.

Interesting question even if unlikely scenario. What would happen if all three teams tied but UH didn’t win the tiebreaker against Northridge due to point differential (Hawaii wins five close sets)? No one would win the tiebreaker against two teams. Would they then all three share the conference title?

38. You forgot that the tiebreaker beside record against each other is point differential and UH wins that one against UCSB. However, if all three teams tied, maybe then the next one is common opponents at the top of the list. That would answer my question in comment #32.
Sucks that northridge is senior night. If it was an easier match like cal poly or Fullerton they could play their seniors more.

42. Read the bylaws, section 20.14. Point differential doesn’t come into play until four other tiebreakers have been considered, and only applies when just two teams are tied. And even then, it is point differential for all conference matches. In the case of three tied team, point differential is not considered at all for tiebreaking puroses. Seriously, I don’t know where people are getting the idea that point differential against tied opponents matters at all.
45. Maverick – read what Cindy Luis said in comment #27. She mentioned that UH would beat UCSB on point differential. Is she wrong then?

51. I agree with you there. I just don’t think that scenario is likely. UCSB will not lose two matches. Long Beach has the best shot at beating UCSB but that’s not a given either. Even Shoji now doesn’t worry about an automatic qualifier. If UH wins the rest of its matches, the team should get an at-large bid based on its RPI.

42. CSN is the perfect test for the post season. If you can’t beat the teams that have beaten you before then you haven’t done enough to improve and ‘earn’ your place in the rankings. Wahine have added offense. Utilizing every aspect (and some unsuspected ones, too) they have ‘tweaked’ their offense and shored up their defense. Northridge is a good test of these changes. They won’t roll over and give us the match, so the Wahine will have to win it to deserve it. Magnificent Seven of Ali, Ashley, Courtney, Emily, Kaela, Kristiana and Mita will get their court time and if we lose, then CSN will have out played us, but I don’t believe that home court advantage is fiction here for Wahine. Come out and support these hard working, hard playing sisters. Am sure that underclasswomen will gladly step aside when and if time comes and Wahine will not miss a beat or overlook an opportunity to perform one more time for SSC crowd and their loving fans. Go Wahine, got your backs!
