  1. LC November 13, 2013 1:43 pm

According to that article on Hawaii Prep World web site Alohi Robins-Hardy was only recruited for basketball by Hawai`i. Not sure if she will be playing both at BYU.

  2. LC November 13, 2013 1:46 pm

Guess I should have put on my glasses it says she will play both at BYU and Hawai`i only recruited her for basketball.

  3. Warriorfan November 13, 2013 1:58 pm

Wow, I’m surprised, She would have been a freebie for UH, she’s solid, probably the state player of the year this year..

Also bummed about Enriques oh well Stanford is hard to turn down.

  4. connor November 13, 2013 2:02 pm

what about emily maglio from canada? does she also need to sign NLI even if she is from Canada?

  5. Cubicle1126 November 13, 2013 2:44 pm

is there a limit on the number of players with a scholarship in one sport (basketball) also playing for another sport (volleyball)? adolpho would still be on the bball scholarship, and the bball coach would have had to accommodate another of her scholarships to do that for alohi-robins. yes, she would have/could have been a freebie, but everyone’s gotta agree on the arrangement as well. just a thought … i have no inside information on this.

  6. setaone November 13, 2013 3:16 pm

Well, basketball has 15 scholarships. I don’t think that they always use all 15. That is why Hittle was able to play both and have hers counted against basketball. It wasn’t a prearraigned agreement like Adolpho’s.

  7. Cubicle1126 November 13, 2013 3:41 pm

setaone — true, but hittle was on bball scholarship at a different time, under a different coach. things change. hittle’s situation also kind of just happened. alohi-robins may have wanted a more definite commitment. but i don’t know…

  8. Volleyball fan November 13, 2013 3:51 pm

Too bad about Enriques. Charlie Wade tried so hard to recruit him. So in 2015 he’ll play against our men.

  9. setaone November 13, 2013 4:16 pm

Cubi…..ya. That is my point. Hittle’s was “spur of the moment.” Just illustrating that basketball hardly uses all their scholarships.

  10. Brandon November 13, 2013 9:41 pm

Kalei Greeley will be a huge asset to us next year. I know it’s early but is uh looking at Lexi sun? She will be a top recruit for sure

  11. Warriorfan November 13, 2013 10:27 pm

    10. I am pretty sure every top school is looking at Lexi Sun. In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if she has offers from USC/UCLA and the like already.

  12. wf November 14, 2013 6:21 am

Good group of incomers! Looking forward to next year but let’s not forget….we have a lot of volleyball to still play!!

  13. LC November 14, 2013 6:28 am

Who was the other OH/MB besides Greeley and Emily Maglio ?

  14. Ki November 14, 2013 6:54 am

    13. Megan Huff

  15. LC November 14, 2013 7:00 am

I love this forum…you can say what’s on your mind without getting dinged in the tight volleyball community on the Island. last night at practice, I was talking to a former ILH coach (boys) who was perplexed by UH passing on Alohi. Now he prefaced it by saying, all the factors are not known so the decision makes sense to anyone who knows the facts.

However technically, he felt that Alohi as a setter was the best setter out of the state in a long time. Her delivery is smooth and on point. She has the ability to find open hitters and can hit on two with ease. Her volleyball IQ is so advanced, that if she was serious, she could play at higher levels than college. Her demeanor on court allows for a calming confident presence.

To him, she is built for volleyball therefore a really great asset to have for a team. Now he also recognizes that when a team invest in players, they do so knowing that perhaps a bigger, faster, better player may be available after the fact however a coach cannot keep trading in fora newer “model’. Maybe if Alohi was able to make it known she wanted to attend UH early on, then a plan could have been made to accommodate her. I wish we could no why she wasn’t pursued stronger? by UH.

  17. LC November 14, 2013 9:07 am

Here is an article from Canada that came out today on Emily Maglio joining the Wahine.

    http://blogs.theprovince.com/2013/11/13/pinetrees-maglio-walking-tall-growing-confidence-propels-t-wolves-star-to-ncaa-div-1-hawaii/

  18. vbfan November 14, 2013 9:24 am

Maybe Aiohi is an LDS and was always inclined to go to BYU, who knows?
I don’t think she was a top 100 player according to prep vb (I know of limited value, but take it FWIW), Greeley and Kahakai were top 100 players.

#18 Just for kicks I googled Gutzmer’s name. She plays for a Division II school in Minnesota, I have no idea why you even mentioned her name.

  19. Msrpantoja1@Huh.'A'loha November 14, 2013 9:53 am

    Alohi Robins-Hardy:

4x First Team Hi. All-State selection / MVP HHSAA Div.I Champion
2013-14 SA POY; HI Gatorade POY
    VBM Fab50
    GVB–Kamehameha Kapalama–national Top 15 team / Captain
6.2 Setter/OPP “Blue-Chipper” from Waimanalo, Oahu (in Prepvolleyball.com’s data base)
    AVCA HS All-American candidate
Daughter to Wahine Mary Robins (2x HI HS’s State POY, 1984-86)
Daughter to Warrior Damien Hardy (Athletic, as I’ll get out)

The Shoji boys left for Stanford..just sayin’…Dave is ’bout ready to retire.
Hawai’i, as a whole, NOT Dave as is His-‘S’teadfast Family, is known for being laid-back.

Hope the Wahine get a couple of good transfers over the ensuing months!
    🙂

  20. Brandon November 14, 2013 10:11 am

Kalei Greeley will be an excellent asset to us. I know this is early but are we looking at Lexi sun? She will be a top recruit for sure

  21. Brandon November 14, 2013 10:12 am

Sorry never mind didn’t see I was responded too! hopefully uh can get her but she’s amazing so I don’t know what school she will choose

  22. Cindy Luis November 14, 2013 12:38 pm

    3. didn’t say for sure Enriquez was heading to Stanford. just likely from what I’ve been told

  23. Cindy Luis November 14, 2013 12:43 pm

16 Re: Robins-Hardy. I don’t believe the interest was there from either side, her or UH. And I don’t believe the family is LDS.
As for the Hittle situation, totally different. It wasn’t that spur of the moment.
and as someone said earlier, the basketball coach has to agree give up a scholarship as well as lose a player for almost half a season with the conflict of vb.

  24. Cindy Luis November 14, 2013 12:51 pm

    17. thanks for the info on Maglio. hadn’t seen anything before I flew out of LA yesterday

  25. LC November 14, 2013 1:02 pm

Kastl has tweeted a couple of times that she will play either sand vb or basketball next year but hasn’t decided yet.

  26. setaone November 14, 2013 2:19 pm

So regarding scholarships. Assuming that she is on vb scholarship, will she also take a basketball scholarship? If she is/has been paying her own way, then its a moot point, she is a walk on for both.

  27. Cindy Luis November 14, 2013 2:29 pm

only one scholarship per athlete per school year.
I believe Kastl will have to petition to play a sixth season since she has used up a redshirt season. UH’s bio info says she had a medical hardship at ASU but those aren’t usually awarded until after an athlete has exhausted their five years to play four.

  28. Brandon November 14, 2013 3:13 pm

Is sarah Mendoza on scholly right now? If not she will probably get one next year.

  29. po'okela November 14, 2013 3:21 pm

doubt shoji will give 2 scholarships to back row players.

  30. po'okela November 14, 2013 3:25 pm

passi probably got the scholarship this year from the departed croson. of course this isn’t 100% accurate but I believe that leaves UH with 2 open scholarships next. 6 departing seniors and 4 incoming freshman.

he will need to save those 2 scholarships as UH will have no scholarships to give away next season. the only graduating senior will be adolpho who’s on a basketball scholarship.

  31. po'okela November 14, 2013 3:31 pm

I think the whole issue with alohi robins hardy is of timing. she graduated at a time where UH already has 2 great setters on their roster and I don’t see her beating out any incoming or current players for time on the right side.

why’s it such a big deal? lol

  32. Brandon November 14, 2013 3:45 pm

Passi is not on scholorship right now. She is paying her own way and might get one next year depending on if Dave uses her. This was the agreement before she transferee and it’s on her cc website

  33. Brandon November 14, 2013 3:47 pm

Am I the only one not bummed about alohi? We have higgins who will be an amazing setter next year and the years to come. She will easily replace uiato because she was even considered to start this year but the decided to give it to uiato.

  34. LC November 14, 2013 3:49 pm

So how many months before we see an official “Shoji inks” announcement on the UH web site ?

The sand team is the worst, they just flat out announce nothing in the off season.

  35. vbfan November 14, 2013 3:55 pm

#30 Hard to believe but looks like 2015 recruiting could be almost done already with Granato and Castillo

Like you said only the coaches really know the scholarship count with 100% accuracy so I still wouldn’t be surprised to see a transfer next year. The team could really use another outside hitter for next season.

We will have to see if anyone leaves during the offseason. I have to wonder if Ginger Long will transfer or switch to sand. Her playing time has been cut compared to the beginning of the season and I don’t think she even made the last road trip. She didn’t appear in the box score for either the Cal Poly or UCSB matches. It also doesn’t look too good for much playing time next year with Taylor and Olevao already ahead of her even before the new recruits that are coming in.

  36. Kazu November 14, 2013 4:20 pm

    17. Thanks for the article on Maglio.

  37. Kazu November 14, 2013 4:37 pm

Northridge vollyball matches on ESPN 3 today and tomorrow if anyone’s intrested.

  38. LC November 14, 2013 6:45 pm

UCSB sweeps Davis and CSUN sweeps Poly.

    No luck,no breaks,no help.

  39. Kazu November 14, 2013 7:04 pm

38 No kidding. What a bummer. Hope this two weeks off dosen’t work against the Wahine.

  40. vballah35 November 14, 2013 7:46 pm

Just watched savanah kahakai play in the senior volleyball invitational and i was impress. She will definitely give hawaii a boost in the libero position.

  41. mauna November 14, 2013 7:51 pm

I’m not a scholarship follower, but if there is 2 left after the recruiting/transfer period passes and practice starts next August, I don’t see any reason why Shoji should hold on to two scholarships for 2015 recruits. Sarah Mendoza is a senior next season and she would need it only for the 2014 season. Shoji would still have two scholarships available for 2015. I don’t see a problem with two DS/L getting scholarship if their value to the team is there. We have seen how valuable Mendoza has been this season and she might even win the libero job over Kahakai, who knows.

  42. Wop ur jaws November 14, 2013 8:06 pm

On OC16 tonight, the mystery on Alohi was discussed. During the senior match, Howard D and Scott Wong revealed facts not rumors. Howard said he interviewed Alohi’s mom, Mary recently I think it might have yesterday in fact. He congratulated her for Alohi’s signing with BYU and wanted to know how she felt about her daughter choosing that school since she herself as a former wahine, she said she wasn’t so sure about it but that in the end BYU was the one with the best offer. Both coaches agreed to let Alohi play both sports. Mary said Alohi didn’t decide until after the states. Scott chimed in saying of late, almost all the pac 12 teams that had scholies still wanted her. And Howard said that UH wanted her badly. But Alohi wanted both sports which most schools couldn’t garantee. They didn’t say which sport at UH who didn’t agree to her playing both sports. BYU agreed to everything she asked for. Then Scott said that since basketball is the more senior sport, the scholie must be from that sport. Scott said that Alohi is the real deal and that she hasn’t been playing club for several years now. And for her level of skill, he doesn’t know how that is. He also mentioned that had UH got her, she would have easily elevated the team with her skills.

  43. tiffers November 15, 2013 9:31 am

35-Long made the travel roster as UH took 14 on the CP/UCSB roadtrip but did not play in either match

~~ From the Who Cares! Department ~~
Week 8: Matches I’ll Be Watching

    Friday (Nov 15):
Undefeated Missouri @ Florida for SEC bragging rights [both can expect to host 1 of the 16 subregionals)

USC @ Washington for current #1 in Pac-12 standings [both can expect to host 1 of the 16 subregionals)

    Saturday (Nov 16):
PSU @ Minnesota (only Gophers and Huskies stand in the way of the Lions entering the NCAA Championship with that in-your-face MO) [PSU will host a subregional, but Minn. is one of the “bubble” subregional teams in the Big Ten, behind Nebraska but ahead of the Fighting Illini]

San Diego State @ UH ….. 1 of 3 games left to end the losing streak. Go Warriors!

  45. OrbitalripZ November 15, 2013 10:32 am

    Saturday (Nov 16):
    UCSB @ CSU Northridge

  46. Brandon November 15, 2013 12:27 pm

I honestly hope florida spanks missouri. Missouri is a tough team but there undefeated record is oveerrated.

  47. Brandon November 15, 2013 12:29 pm

Missouri does have a chance at the final four this year though. There is no doubt about that, but I just think if they had a schedule like stanford or penn state they would be undefeated

  48. pacesetterhawaii November 15, 2013 3:11 pm

Missouri is ahead 2 sets over Florida. Still hoping Florida can come back. Hey guys, don’t forget to vote for Emily. Let’s rally behind her.

  49. hollycow November 15, 2013 3:16 pm

I’m for the Hawaii girls Kan and Keala. Kan’s having a tough time 1-4-11 but doing it other ways got 9 digs.

  50. hollycow November 15, 2013 3:20 pm

I believe that Missouri is going to be in one of the Hawaii tournaments when Kan and Keala are seniors in 2016. Shoji probably won’t be around then, but I see that tradition carrying on.

  51. pacesetterhawaii November 15, 2013 3:43 pm

Missouri won in 3. I am happy for the Hawaii girls.

  52. hollycow November 15, 2013 4:09 pm

For Missouri, I really believe that the Hawaii girls, especially Kan made a difference in their success this year. They are winners on the court, with their Hawaiian style defense and demeanor. Looking ahead next season with the Wahine, do you realize that we may have 5 Hawaii girls starting out of the 7. With Taylor, Olevao, Adolpho already starters and adding Kahakai at L/DS and Higgins at S. The real NaWahine Hawaiians may more than make up the loss of the 7 seniors this year.

  53. mauna November 15, 2013 4:23 pm

    51. hollycow. That’s a interesting insight. I wonder if Hawaii ever had in the before Libero time with 6 starters or after with 7 starters with that number of local girls starting.

  54. Brandon November 15, 2013 4:32 pm

Proud of Missouri. I guess I was wrong, they are better than Florida and deserve their ranking! After tonight’s match they are nc contenders and people better watch out for them.

  55. Brandon November 15, 2013 4:42 pm

Washington takes the first set 25-15

  56. Brandon November 15, 2013 5:01 pm

USC takes the second set 25-21. Gonna be a good game

  61. turfwar November 15, 2013 11:48 pm

Savannah Kahakai had a tremendous run from the service line for about 10-12 points with 4 or 5 aces. Her tough serve alone is worthy of a scholie. High toss and she hammers it. Adora Anae also looked very impressive. Terrific athlete who at times simply hit over the block. She has a chance start in her first year in Utah.

  62. Brandon November 15, 2013 11:50 pm

I wonder why they allowed Adolpho? I mean I’m not too bummed about alohi because we have higgins but byu will defanitly profit from her

  63. hollycow November 15, 2013 11:50 pm

    59. Can’t be in two places at the same time. Probably didn’t want another Adolpho situation missing 33% of the basketball season. Could be the other way around, missing 50% of the volleyball season, starting with practice for basketball in October. Wonder what part of what sport she’s not playing in with BYU that both coaches agreed on to seal the deal.

  64. Brandon November 15, 2013 11:53 pm

    62. Why did they allow Adolpho? Isn’t she a starter on both teams

  65. hollycow November 15, 2013 11:59 pm

    61. When Adolpho came in Takahara-Dias was the head and she allowed that to happen, with Adolpho using her basketball scholarship. Evidently Beeman says otherwise and won’t allow a situation like that again with Robins-Hardy. I don’t blame her (Beeman) at all, look who’s she has on the team with the bigs right now. Unexpectedly two academic non qualifying tall transfers and no Adolpho for now until December.

  66. Vbfan2 November 16, 2013 12:03 am

I think you mean Kevin Wong, not Scott. I don’t think Scott would be commenting on a recruit that chose another school over Hawaii.

I guess we’ll never know the full story regarding Aiohi ,but I will say this. If a player like Logan Tom wanted to play basketball and volleyball you can bet the coaching staffs would have worked something out. Hawaii probably did want her, but they weren’t desperate either.

  67. justafan November 16, 2013 4:06 am

BYU already has Jennifer Hamson and a women’s bball coach that has been tenured enough to understand the logistics of having a two sport athlete with conflicting seasons. Like others have mentioned, when Adolpho signed, Takahara-Dias was the coach. Things have changed, and I imagine Beeman doesn’t want to wait on two impact players. Not entirely sure how valid this is, but I heard Alohi didn’t even want to play volleyball in college. So perhaps finding a program like BYU that was willing to satisfy her needs as well as those of her family, was most fitting.

  68. LC November 16, 2013 6:45 am

Don’t beat this dead horse to death, she’s not playing for UH and Scott’s explanation ( see 59 ) should satisfy our curiosity .

  69. Hot November 16, 2013 7:24 am

    29. Melissa Villaroman and Hedder Ilustre were on scholarship at the same time.

    35. I think there’s a possibility that Long could improve and be in the mix next year, whether as a front row or back row player. It’s not like Olevao is putting up superstar numbers.

  70. po'okela November 16, 2013 12:24 pm

#67 I agree but alohi is no logan tom end of story.

can we seriously move pass this because a few months ago, nobody cared what school she was interested in and now that they’ve seen her play every one has now jumped on the band wagon?

  71. po'okela November 16, 2013 12:25 pm

    I meant #66

  72. Brandon November 16, 2013 12:39 pm

    70. I agree! She’s an amazing player but no someone worth getting fussy over. She’s not someone who would make a national championship team. She’s no destiny hooker, logan tom, Megan hodge. Now Lexi sun is someone we should fight over! She’s amazing

  73. LC November 16, 2013 12:43 pm

Scott or Kevin , like they don’t share things ?

I’ll check it out on the next replay. 😉

  74. Cindy Luis November 16, 2013 4:06 pm

Kevin is doing the OC broadcasts.

  75. Warriorfan November 16, 2013 4:56 pm

    72. Let’s be real hawaii has no shot at players like that and probably no shot at Sun either. Anyway Alohi is a great player and I think UH should have recruited her period ( she wouldn’t have cost them anything!) but whatever it’s done.

I will forgive the UH coaches if they land Noreen Iosia in 2016. I think we are solid with Higgins for the next three years, just gotta hope she stays healthy , not sold on goodman.

  76. Brandon November 16, 2013 7:20 pm

    75. I know we don’t have a big change at sun but it’s worth trying. I haven’t seen goodman play. How is she? Higgins is amazing so I agree if she stays healthy we are solid there

  77. Brandon November 16, 2013 7:28 pm

@75 and I beleive the did try to recruit her but she wanted to play basketball and they wouldn’t give her both sports. Probably cause the basketball coach wouldn’t let. Oh well

  78. chink November 17, 2013 8:54 am

Lets not fault the basketball coach. It goes both ways. Either Beeman would not want her to miss the begining half of basketball season to volleyball or Shoji wouldn’t wan’t to lose the last half of the volleyball season due to basketball. There was no compromise and I under stand both sides not wanting to be void a player for part of the season.
