Search mission

Another UH coaching vacancy, another search committee.

Let’s shake it up. We suggest the following for the committee:

Dennis Christianson — Face it, the basketball program needs an image boost. Last year, the Anthology Marketing Group won six Pele awards, which is local advertising’s equivalent of the Oscars. Clients include Microsoft, Sprint, Marriott, Hawaiian Airlines, Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, American Savings, Farmers Hawaii, Bank of Hawaii and Hawaiian Telcom. Never met Christianson. Couldn’t even say if he’s dead or alive. But he’s listed as Anthology’s head honcho. That’s good enough for a seat on the committee.

Dennis Agena — He coaches basketball 364 days a year. This is a leap year, so he’s working 365. In any case, he does have a free day to serve on the committee.

Nani Cockett — Every year, the Rainbow Wahine recruiters keep searching for the next Nani Cockett. Maybe Nani Cockett can help find the coach who can complete the circle.

Michael Dahilig — If only all fans could be like the guy with the H shirt who is yelling and screaming and having a good ol’ time. Then you realize, that super fan is … a Regent? Somehow the Regents will have some sort of say in the hiring, so why not include a UH graduate who really cares about the school’s athletic future? Plus, he’s a lawyer who once served as the ASUH president. He’s seen UH from several sides.

Rebecca Lobo — If we’re going to think outside the box, let’s go outside the state. Lobo was a great player who is now an insightful basketball analyst. She has numerous connections. She could help make it a search committee instead of a screening committee.

* * * * *

Congrats to the volleyball Warriors for upsetting Stanford last night. If they win six of their final eight — and the schedule will be more favorable down the stretch — that should be good enough for a berth in the MPSF tournament.

Happy belated birthday to Debbie (Sokei) Sorenson.

At least JD is starting the search process now. good thing JD!

Gives the returning players and the next coach a chance fo leap

on next year’s recruits, and inspire the returnees of good things to come.

    Good points ST. Good points.

how about having artie wilson on the committee?

  5. Warriorbacker March 8, 2012 12:37 am

I am not sure Rebecca Lobo will be able to take time off from calling all those NCAA women’s games on espn but good suggestion.

The next coach will have a lot of talent to work with, especially if the Kuehu twins and kiwi player are good to go.

  6. AlaWai March 8, 2012 12:55 am

Coach Tony Selitto would make a good committee member. Brilliant basketball mind. National Championship coach.

  7. Steve March 8, 2012 1:03 am

The Wahine’s had a chance for the next Nani Cockett, but they let her go to WSU.

  8. Steve March 8, 2012 1:06 am

ST, actually Nani Cockett should be on the committee, just my opinion.

  9. Steve March 8, 2012 1:08 am

al, I agree, Artie Wilson should be another one that should be on the committee.

According to JD he would like to name a new HC within 2 weeks, so that the new HC would have time to recruit, since NLI Day is about 4 weeks away. He mentioned that he does not want to handicap the new HC.

  13. Pomai March 8, 2012 1:36 am

My 2 cents – It’s too bad about Dana Takahara-Dias I like her as a coach, her bigest problem I think was she only had one assistant coach that was worth anything and that was

Gavin Petersen, the other two Da Houl and Margot Richards I wouldn’t have hired them. But good luck to her in whatever she does.

  14. Pomai March 8, 2012 1:37 am

Maybe Ralph should put in for the new head coaches job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Haleakala March 8, 2012 3:03 am

ST: A normal year has 365 days. This year being a leap year will have 366 days.

  17. Stephen Tsai March 8, 2012 3:10 am

    Haleakala

Agena takes one day off every year, so he works 364 of a normal year, and 365 of a leap year, thus the one free day reference.

Pplease, how about a committee of four: JD, Nani, Coach Tony S and MRC Greenwood. Cockett, is a rarity that is truly invested in program rather than advancing her resume or catering to program idiots. MRC is far from being an expert but has shown acumen to learn quickly and is not quirky. Tony is experienced, knows the bottomline and is capable of asking the right questions.

Keep the Oscars in Hollywood and the politicians on Beretania and Punchbowl.

This aint dancing with the stars.

We are talking about a $1 m tax payers women’s program. get serious.

It worked well with Chow’s selection.

Artie selected MAC and Nash and went head over heels for hermi–three time selection loser.

I do like his TV work with Kanoa n Tony. sweet trio.

    Off Topic:

What if they lowered the rim to 9 feet for women’s basketball? Maybe then we would see more “exciting” play and more people would watch and spend money on women’s basketball in general.

I know this has nothing to do with trying to find a new HC at UH, but just think what might happen to women’s basketball if the rim were lowered. I mean, they already use a smaller ball than men’s basketball.

I think JD pulled the plug too early. I attended the Senior Night final against Nevada which the Wahine won 72-68. It was an exciting game. The play of Bello made it exciting to think about next season. Plus Dana was able to win on the road with wins against Colombia, Nevada, New Mexico St., and LaTech. I don’t know what’s with Kuehu, but her presence might have made a difference for more W’s. Bring in the next victim, er.. HC. The next victim might be Gib. His team definitely under-performed. And I thought they would do great things after their China trip.

    Howzit, everyone!

Best wishes to Coach Dana and staff.

Was hoping for more from both basketball programs this year. We surprise some teams, and then don’t show up against others. Beginning of the season looked real promising. Then just fell off the edge of the earth! Got killed on turnovers and free throws, and out-rebounded in crucial games. Fixable. Just gotta get it done.

Gratz to Warrior V’ballers!!! Keep it going!

And finally, happy birthday to all you birthday peeps!

Hope you all have a great day! Me? I’m gonna search for a good pork adobo recipe for this weekend. Kinda hungry for some adobo, since someone mentioned it yesterday.

  36. Buffoman March 8, 2012 6:56 am

I’d like to think that we can do the WBB vacancy with local talent, but it is just unrealistic to believe that the names mentioned have the ties to the talent pools we need to bring in from the continent to make the team as competitive as we want it.

If we just don’t care about the winning and just want to showcase local talent who want to stay home, then by all means get a local coach.

Not saying its not possible, but if you look at our successful coaches, they have kids from the continent with strengths not found in the islands in key positions to create a competitive team.

Recruiting is key and those who know and have contacts and relationships in those places where talent resides and want to be here to coach our team are the ones we need to really consider as HC. Take nothing away from folks like Ms. Cockett, she may be able to do the x and o thing, but without the players, it’s an uphill battle.

  37. Steve March 8, 2012 7:04 am

Heard JD say, on one of the TV Channels, that he wanted to hire the new HC within 2 weeks, since NLI Day is about 4 weeks away. Does not want to put the new HC behind the 8 ball, in recruiting. Leads me to believe that JD has someone in mind and it will be his call, no committee will be formed. With this being said, would not surprise me if the next HC comes from the current staff, in the name of Gavin Petersen.

  38. bigislandkurt March 8, 2012 7:10 am

Recruiting is the life bread of any college program. Nice to see names batted around a possible replacements for DTD. But in the end, you need a proven product when it comes to recruiting both in and out of the state of Hawaii.

  43. Think2much March 8, 2012 8:06 am

Nani Cockett was a great player but has no credentials as a coach. Give coach Bobby Awa of Konaweana a chance to take it to the next level where she can work with players of a high skill level. Some say she won because of superior talent but that is far from the truth. In the championship game, Iolani had equal talent and greater size. If we were willing to experiment with a local head coach with Dias, Awa is a much better risk with a solid record. As far as recruiting, I’m sure she’ll get her share of women with a passion for basketball who will be lucky to experience Hawaii because of it. I would also guess that if Awa is given the chance, it would include her husband.

  44. Da Punchbowl Kid March 8, 2012 8:14 am

I was thinking of Nani more as an assistant. Her father was tremendous coach, she has the DNA, so to speak. She’d be good for the program.

In any case, folks who know a lot more about the situation will be making the call. I have faith in them.

  45. papajoe2 March 8, 2012 8:31 am

alika smith as head coach, with nani cockett as one of his assistants.

keeping gavin peterson on as his chief recruiter.

then pick up two more assistants that have recruiting ties in the inner cities of socal and norcal.

  52. al March 8, 2012 9:00 am

    jm0911…again? why?

  53. jkjones March 8, 2012 9:01 am

Jim Donovan will be making the selection, so Im not lobbying for anyone, just discussing dynamics that surround its process.

Why, on heaven’s earth, would JD select someone from the current staff?

That would be simular to hiring Miano to replace MAC….only, worst.

I didnt see a hint of coaching or recruiting abilities on this team that would garner the type of attention as a bonafide candidate. From top to bottom.

    Hasnt JD learned?

    I believe so.

Donovan maybe slow afoot, but he has shown to be a sensible-learner with a long memory.

Last time around, his all-star committee bypassed a candidate that subsequently turned around a rinky-dink program in the NW.

    Hopefully Donovan gets it.

This is not about feel good networks, entitlement favors or politically correct decisions.

This is about Donavan’s 3/09/2012 pledge to bring in a coach that can win on the hardwood.

This is about injecting the wahine program with the kind of stuff that Dave Shojii and Bob Coolen have toiled endless hours to produce–a winner.

The wahine players deserve it, loyal wahine fans crave for it and the program is in desperate need of it.

In sum, this is not the time to select another coach with training wheels attached to their resume. We need something stable, preferably seasoned, that can restart a winning tradition.

  54. jm2375 March 8, 2012 9:01 am

al-san – you mentioned one of his most favorite people. 👿 Guess which one.

  55. Da Punchbowl Kid March 8, 2012 9:04 am

Lemee guess, does it rhyme with “low sun adminstrator?” 😆

  56. jm2375 March 8, 2012 9:07 am

Just remember that very few of the current coaches were college head coaches prior to their jobs here. Charlie Wade was head coach of the UOP women’s team. He’s still learning the nuances of recruiting and scholarship division of the sport that is NCAA men’s volleyball.

  57. Ipu Man March 8, 2012 9:13 am

Al, I agree with you: “alika smith as head coach, with nani cockett as one of his assistants.” But for the rest of his staff, why not hire a volley ball recruiter and turn them tall (and husky) beauties into basketball stars?

  58. Couch potato March 8, 2012 9:15 am

there’s more rocks to look under when recruiting women basketball players than men vb players. nationally speaking.

  59. LizKauai March 8, 2012 9:16 am

    Go BASEBOWS!

    Go SOFTBOWS!

  60. hossana March 8, 2012 9:31 am

Recruiting is a long term process and not a 4 wk. process that JD seems to think upon the hiring of a new coach. The new coach will already be handicap in the recruiting process and if JD thinks a new coach can come in and recruit the type of people he needs within 4 wks. before the National Letter of Intent day then JD should give it a try himself. No, the new HC will already be at a handicap and JD better realize it instead of coming up with his asinine insight that that’s enough time to recruit…..unless you want Div. 2 talent.

Yes, DTD was overwhelmed coaching in Div. 1 as she seemed lost at times but please enough with this attitude about hiring local talent or local kids…..to get the program to Div. 1 status, you need to recruit Div. 1 talent and unfortunately, Hawaii doesn’t have an adequate supply of Div. 1 talent. Nothing more and nothing less.

ST . . . that would be an excellent committee.

A lot of people say put Artie or Coach Tony on the committee. I get that, but I think women’s basketball is a completely different animal. There are some things you look for to fill a mens team that you don’t necessarily have in the women’s game. I think it requires a different approach, from people with women’s bball experience. Not that people like Artie or Coach Tony should be left off the committee . . .

  67. marc March 8, 2012 9:48 am

alika smith, HC…..with Nani cockett as one of the assistance….that would be nice hire

Kalaheo won the D2 title this year right? Still, a lot of people argue for Alika Smith to be the next HC. With the exception of this year, I have not been wowed by him as a coach.

  70. papajoe2 March 8, 2012 9:49 am

I agree with jkjones. We made a mistake with hiring a head coach with no D1 experience so lets not do it again. If we make the same mistake again, it will take another 3 years to realize it, then hire another coach. By then, with the rising costs to run a D1 athletic program, maybe we will lose some sports. Maybe not wbb, because of Title IX, but continue to lose money, and maybe some mens sport. Or even cut back on existing sports like mens volleyball. Not too long ago, weren’t they considering dropping baseball?

    I don’t get this comment/suggestion.

In the same light, would one request that if the UH men’s basketball program lacked height compared and struggled that the UH men’s team hire a men’s volleyball coach to lure height?

Or is this a case of double-standard/stereotyping because this is a women’s bball program?

And yes, I am asking a SERIOUS question.

So, who are the best Wide Receiver tandems in the country?

  73. papajoe2 March 8, 2012 9:58 am

Maybe even hire a very successful D2 coach or a top assistant from a very successful D1 program. At least with successful college coaching experience. In basketball, they only play 5 at a time. You don’t need a whole bunch of recruits like football or baseball. Just the right recruits to complimate what we have now and good coaching. Take the Fabulous 5 for example. I know they are some other smaller D1 schools that hired the right coach, got the right recruits and made it to the big dance very fast. That could be the answer to larger crowds. Do you think any of the local coaches fit that mode?

  74. papajoe2 March 8, 2012 10:04 am

Kevin or anyone else. Do you know how much money the assistant coaches for DTD was getting paid? A good coach must hire good assistants. Maybe the pay scale has to go up again to attract such. I would be nice for the program to succeed to attract the top local girls. The more local girls that suceed going away, then the future stars will get recruited to go away.

UH has 20 collegiate division one programs.

Even back when we had 19, cutting programs, like a men’s program, then a women’s program to avoid Title IX violation would have placed UH at risk of maintaining division one status across the board.

All Division I schools must field athletes in at least seven sports for men and seven for women or six for men and eight for women, with two team sports for each gender.

    At UH (dual matching sports):

    M bball, W bball

    M vball, W vball

    M tennis, W tennis

    M swim, W swim

    M golf, W golf

Odd balls (single gender only and co-ed):

Football, sand volleyball, baseball, *softball, women’s water polo, cheerleading (co-ed), sailing (co-ed), women’s soccer, women’s track and field, women’s cross country.

So UH is good right now, but cutting of any kind puts them at some kind of risk.

  91. papajoe2 March 8, 2012 10:23 am

#88, Ipu Man. Maybe that’s why Fehoko is considering going there. She was also a cheerleader and homecoming queen.

    Good morning everyone!

Best wishes and mahalo to Dana Takara Dias. She brought healing and reassembly to the wahine basketball program during one of it’s ugliest phases. Too bad she couldn’t totally rebuild it, but she played a crucial role and hopefully the future history of UH sports will remember her kindly.

  95. RedZone March 8, 2012 10:41 am

Virginia Tech coach was so impressed last year that he invited a female kicker back for spring ball.

  96. plastikiniai langai March 8, 2012 10:42 am

Heya i’m for the first time here. I found this board and I find It really useful & it helped me out much. I’m hoping to provide something again and help others such as you aided me.

  97. Warriorbacker March 8, 2012 11:01 am

Re. 43. Why should UH hire this coach that has sent her top players off to mainland schools instead of UH? No thanks. UH needs to hire someone with D1 coaching experience anyway.

  98. kapakahi March 8, 2012 11:03 am

42 – 41 Idaho. 14:25 left in the 2nd half. Gib has only 1 TO left.

I like Alika Smith for a few reasons

    1.Coaching Pedigree

2.He’s Already Coached At The College Level

3.Proven Success in His Current Coaching Job

  105. RedZone March 8, 2012 11:09 am

Thomas gets a foul then gets a T which is his 5th and he is gone. Ouch!!!

  106. Warriorbacker March 8, 2012 11:11 am

Re. 101. Most importantly he hasn’t coached women and has no recruiting contacts ( who would he bring in before signing day ends?) . Havn’t we learned anything from hiring DTD??

Men’s volleyball hiring Wade was different because there are only 20 division one teams in mens volleyball, so recruiting isn’t as competitive.

  107. kev-1 March 8, 2012 11:11 am

did joston just get kicked out of the game? WTH?

Feheko Fanaika, the 6′ 6″ 340 OL – His two top schools are????? Since he is still in SEC country now , I beleive the two schools are Florida and LSU – unfortunately Hawaii is out of the running.

  144. jm2375 March 8, 2012 12:23 pm

    Congrats to the BasketBows!!! ONWARD!

  145. ruffles March 8, 2012 12:31 pm

Hey all you experts, how about seeing who applies for the position than having the selection board choose the most qualified person. How’s that for a novel idea? I personally think they need to clean house among the current staff, losing attitude is losing attitude. From watching the games it looked like during the timeouts on the sidelines it was Gavin doing most of the coaching, he seemed to be the most vocal, but yet losing a almost 20 point lead in the second half is not just on the players, but bad situational coaching. I know choosing the most qualified is easier said than done, cause you can never be sure, so good luck to the selection board, the wahine do have talent!

  146. whitey March 8, 2012 12:38 pm

ruffles, i think all the coaches are being terminated when Coach DTD’s contract was not renewed. Whomever they hire will bring in his/her own coaching staff.

  147. Bryson March 8, 2012 12:40 pm

Re108:How many seniors were on this years Wahine BBall team? He could always hire assistants who have contacts outside of Hawaii but remember he did coach on the men’s bball team and I’m guessing if he did recruit mainland High schools most would have a girls team as well so it is possible for him to have contacts…as for never coaching women coaching is coaching it’s not like he would be applying to coach a sport he doesn’t know..

  148. kev-1 March 8, 2012 12:59 pm

    paniolo . . . where’d you hear that?

  149. Wes'side Warrior March 8, 2012 1:07 pm

  152. A-House March 8, 2012 1:20 pm

    Coach Dana:

Thank you for all your efforts to make Na Wahine basketball better and being the “bridge” to the next level of success.

  154. sean March 8, 2012 1:29 pm

Congrats to the Men’s BB Team. Rainbow Warriors true test of perseverance and guts.

Coach Dana best of luck on your next venture. You tried your best. Thank you!!

    GO ALL UH TEAMS

  155. jm2375 March 8, 2012 1:38 pm

Gotta disagree that men’s vb recruiting isn’t as competitive or there are less rocks to look under. With only 20+ Div I teams, the competition is HIGHER. As for where we are getting our recruits from, just look at the past and present Warriors. They are from Europe, Middle East, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, Puerto Rico and from Florida, Missouri and other volleyball “hotbeds”.

  156. ruffles March 8, 2012 1:41 pm

thank you for stating the obvious about the staff, what I was referring to was those who were advocating for Gavin Peterson as HC, very similar situation with Rich Miano with football.

  157. Ipu Man March 8, 2012 1:43 pm

Banana trees may grow down south in Louisiana where Shaq played.

But he was born in New Jersey and played high school ball in Texas.

    From Wikipedia:

O’Neal was born in Newark, New Jersey. O’Neal credits the Boys and Girls Club of America in his hometown of Newark, New Jersey, with giving him a safe place to play and keeping him off the streets. “It gave me something to do,” he said. “I’d just go there to shoot. I didn’t even play on a team.” He led his Robert G. Cole High School team, from San Antonio, Texas, to a 68–1 record during his two years there and helped the team win the state championship during his senior year. His 791 rebounds during the 1989 season remains a state record for a player in any classification. On January 31st, 2012, O’Neal was honored as one of the 35 Greatest McDonald’s All-Americans.

After graduating from high school, O’Neal studied business at Louisiana State University. He had first met Dale Brown, LSU’s men’s basketball coach, years earlier in Europe. O’Neal’s stepfather was stationed on a U.S. Army base at Wildflecken, West Germany. While playing for Brown at LSU, O’Neal was a two-time All-American, two-time SEC player of the year, and received the Adolph Rupp Trophy as NCAA men’s basketball player of the year in 1991. O’Neal left LSU early to pursue his NBA career, but continued his education even after becoming a professional player. He was later inducted into the LSU Hall of Fame.

So to sum up, we need coaches to recruit big shaq’s in both men

    and women basketball and football.

    😳

  158. kev-1 March 8, 2012 1:43 pm

Is there no chance that Zane could re-join the team? Is his condition that bad? Anyone know?

  159. d1shima March 8, 2012 1:45 pm

IIRC “mono” is not something that clears up in a day or two.

  160. d1shima March 8, 2012 1:48 pm

Self-care is usually all that is needed if you have mono. Unless you have a serious complication of mono (which rarely occurs), no medicine or treatment will speed your recovery. Most people who have mono recover without problems. There are many steps you can take to ease the symptoms until you are back to normal.

Your symptoms will gradually improve over 2 to 3 weeks. You should be able to return to your normal activities within about a month. Let your symptoms be your guide. You may need to adjust your school and work schedule to take advantage of times when you feel more energetic. If you feel better, try to get back to your routine sooner, but remember not to push yourself.

  165. d1shima March 8, 2012 2:01 pm

Anyone got a score on the NaMaSU-Fresnex game?

  166. kev-1 March 8, 2012 2:07 pm

last look 54 NMSU 41 Fresno

  167. Pomai March 8, 2012 2:10 pm

The treatment for mononucleosis can generally be accomplished at home with plenty of rest, fluids and over-the-counter medications.

•Take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) for fever and pain control.

•Throat lozenges or gargling with warm saltwater may soothe a sore throat.

•Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

•Rest in bed and limit activity according to the degree of the illness.

•Avoid strenuous exercise and contact sports until the doctor allows resumption of activities. The spleen may be enlarged, and vigorous activity may cause it to rupture. Most doctors believe that a person with mononucleosis should postpone strenuous activities for at least one month after the onset of symptoms or until the spleen has returned to its normal size.

    big challenge tomorrow.

btw . . . anyone else pick up that BC doesn’t sound to fond of Shaq? Seems awfully critical of the kid. I didn’t see the game, but by the way Curran was making it sound, he thinks Shaq is reckless.

    Ipu Man . . .

Thanks. Now I gotta go there tomorrow for dinner.

  179. Ipu Man March 8, 2012 3:43 pm

oops, not foodland—meant Ala moana foodcourt.

    Senior moment.

    Are we at 100 yet?

  180. Stephen Tsai March 8, 2012 3:51 pm

Like we’ve all said, when it comes to a tournament, anything is possible.

  181. Stephen Tsai March 8, 2012 3:53 pm

Saw “Steve”on campus. Tried to yell, “hi,” but I guess he didn’t hear me. Or was ignoring me. But nice to see his support of UH athletics.

  182. Stephen Tsai March 8, 2012 3:57 pm

UH was supposed to have given FF a drop-dead deadline. Heard that didn’t happen. But FF has decided against Florida, so it still remains a battle between Hawaii and LSU. I think FF is leaning toward UH, but family favors the national runner-up.

    We’ll see.

  183. kapakahi March 8, 2012 4:01 pm

    ST,

Is Mikey Andrade’s LOI contingent on FF?

  184. Steve March 8, 2012 4:08 pm

ST (185), are you talking about me, that is seeing me on campus. If so, when was this?

  185. WarriorNY March 8, 2012 4:12 pm

Ok… Congrats to the MBB but can someone tell WAC.TV to improve the broadcast by including a running score graphic? It isn’t expensive or even difficult. So annoying…

  186. Stephen Tsai March 8, 2012 4:16 pm

It was at about 11 or so.

It was drizzling. You were speed-walking next to the arena.

  187. wafan March 8, 2012 4:17 pm

Hmmm, so crews damaged a “synthetic natural gas line”.

A what?!?! The gas or the line?

  188. Stephen Tsai March 8, 2012 4:17 pm

    Kapakahi

Those are separate offers. There was a glitch with Andrade’s LOI, so it has to be resubmitted.

  189. kapakahi March 8, 2012 4:22 pm

    #192. ST,

Thanks for the clarification info on Andrade’s LOI.

BTW, any updated status on Class of 2010 signee DE Ipulasi “Lasi” Eselu?

so that means there will be sun all weekend.

    good.

  191. Kevin March 8, 2012 4:29 pm

Who was it that said FF preferred a more polynesian setting (i.e. teammates, culture, etc…). If that is the case, how interesting that FAMILY wants him at LSU.

    But then again…

  192. RedZone March 8, 2012 4:33 pm

    $. Remember Cam.

  193. Shoko March 8, 2012 4:34 pm

The score at Nevada-SJSU game after the first half is 14-13 with the Wolf Pack trailing. Only 14-13 after the half? How you figgah?

  194. Kevin March 8, 2012 4:36 pm

What can I say. Supposedly money doesn’t buy you happiness. Well maybe not all of the time, but MOST of the time.

  195. kapakahi March 8, 2012 4:36 pm

#195, That’s because the FAMILY will still be NorCal….in a more Polynesian setting….around themselves, while FF would probably the only Poly….by his lonesome….trying to assimilate…..and present the FAMILY….who would be there on game weekends.

  196. Stephen Tsai March 8, 2012 4:43 pm

I had to clean out some spam, so some of the numbers might not correlate.

    Sorry.

  200. Steve March 8, 2012 4:46 pm

ST (189) Nope, that was not me. I believe the only 2 people that know who I am are Pomai, and your co-worker, Cindy Luis.

  203. Derek March 8, 2012 4:47 pm

I don’t think Alika Smith is the answer. You need a proven recruiter on the Division I level. It could be a college assistant, but the new coach has got to evaluate and get Division I talent. Period. You can’t go on sentiment. I say get somebody from the mainland, but who loves and understands Hawaii. It’s not easy, but I would lean to somebody from California because the Wahine will be in the Big West. Just my take on it.

  204. duffer March 8, 2012 4:48 pm

OK OK made the corrections. It’s Thursday, they have PC’s on the darkside now?

steve, don’t understand, you are a tsaiko, but you don’t want to know the chief tsaiko. amazing!!!!

  206. Stephen Tsai March 8, 2012 4:50 pm

What qualities would folks like to see in the head coach of the women’s basketball team?

I have never figured out the right combination. I do know that the former USC coach, who was a finalist the last time, was pretty intriguing.

  207. whitey March 8, 2012 4:50 pm

    in my spacecraft.

  208. Stephen Tsai March 8, 2012 4:51 pm

  209. whitey March 8, 2012 4:53 pm

at one time in the past, wbb had different standards, but they have come a long ways in a short time where all now play the same game as men. so does it make a difference whether the hc is a man or woman??? I don’t know, but both have shown that they can win games in wbb.

  210. whitey March 8, 2012 4:55 pm

I guess to see a slam dunk is a rarity in wbb, but they plays and shooting is the same as men.

Where on campus? The L&L in the athletic complex? Gross.

L&L and Zippys are a shame to local food.

Reminds of the article about Courtney Senas mentioning craving local food and going to Zippys. Im thinking, either it just slipped out and she didn’t mean Zippys or she has really been lost up there in Florida thinking decent local food can be found at Zippys.

She’s from the Mililani/Wahiawa area, at least give a shout out to Mililani Restaurant!!! SOME OF THE BEST PORTUGUESE SAUSAGE FRIED RICE EVER!!!!

  212. Steve March 8, 2012 4:56 pm

whitey, I know who ST is, walked by him a number of times up at the UHAD complex. ST actually needs a new car. No offense ST, but it is amazing how you can get around in your old car. The Tsaikos should actually chip in and buy the Chief Tsaiko a new auto.

  213. whitey March 8, 2012 4:57 pm

itsy, bitsy spider went up the water spout, down came the rain and killed the buggah, this time I hope.

  214. whitey March 8, 2012 5:00 pm

kevin, one of the best korean kal b lunch places was/is in Wahiawa. I haven’t been there for years, so don’t know if they still there. It is on an adjoining road to main street and on the mauka side.

  215. whitey March 8, 2012 5:02 pm

steve, steve, if you know him, how come you no go introduce yourself to him. he said he would have bought you lunch.

  216. al March 8, 2012 5:02 pm

its been deadlocked since this past weekend.

a man should be able to make his own decisions and go with his gut instinct. let the heart lead the way.

sometimes, family members are just trying to live vicariously through their sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, and cousins. if family members truly care about another then they will give their blessings to them rather than try to steer them away from their dreams.

    …nuff said.

  217. whitey March 8, 2012 5:03 pm

itsy, bitsy spider wear you stay?? rain did it’s job. yeah.

  218. Steve March 8, 2012 5:03 pm

Kevin, Senas was starving for any kind of local food, was not picky. Talking to one of her former coaches, said she lost quite alot of weight cause of the food in Florida.

  219. al March 8, 2012 5:04 pm

i guess by now ahouse and mattyboy are beginning to realize just how close we are to getting a huge (literally) recruit.

i’ve been saying this for awhile and yes we still got a great shot at this great young man.

    Ok, I’ll join in.

Little Miss Muffett sat of a tuffett eat her curds and whey. Along came a spider and sat down besider her and said “yo ******, whats in da bowl?”.

  221. Kevin March 8, 2012 5:06 pm

    “On a tuffett”.

What the hell is a tuffett anyway?

  222. Steve March 8, 2012 5:06 pm

whitey, next time I will. ST just looked quite busy. The times I have seen him was during the football season.

  223. Wes'side Warrior March 8, 2012 5:07 pm

#182… ST… you yelled “hi” but he thought you was saying hi to one of his other personalities, so das why he neva turn around and acknowledge your greeting.

    … Just my guess…

  224. Kevin March 8, 2012 5:09 pm

    “Rehab is for quitters”.

  225. whitey March 8, 2012 5:10 pm

kevin, is a tuffet a mushroom?? I get no idea. We just had another downpour and we stay under flood warning.

  226. Kevin March 8, 2012 5:10 pm

Cocaine addiction is God’s way of saying you make too much money.

  227. Kevin March 8, 2012 5:10 pm

Flash Flood? In Soviet Russia, flood flashes you.

  228. Kevin March 8, 2012 5:12 pm

Oh I LOVE this one. You could stick it anywhere at UH. Upper campus, lower campus (next to the softball stadium especially)

Due to budget cuts, the light at the end of the tunnel will now be switched off.

  229. whitey March 8, 2012 5:12 pm

kevin, i not smart, so what is “curds and whey”. no need answer, i got to go. next time. thanks to you and pomai for your hard work.

  230. Steve March 8, 2012 5:16 pm

whitey, the only one I do not want to meet is Kevin, even tho I have seen him at the Wahine Softball games. Sorry Kevin, you just look to scary. Pomai, on the otherhand, looks more like the grandfather type.

Actually, Coach Chow should make Kevin the Warrior Mascot. Put Warrior paint on him and he could scare the opponents into not playing their best. Just saying in fun.

  231. Kevin March 8, 2012 5:19 pm

    Whitey,

I dunno. But it sounds gross and bland. Probably represented the poor class of England at the time someone smoked marijuana and wrote that nursery rhyme.

So a spider comes by while some girl is eating something and scares her away. VERY ignorant and pointless “rhyme”.

See this is what happens when softball isn’t played when it is supposed to.

  232. papajoe2 March 8, 2012 5:26 pm

I tink curds stay some people in da middle east. Some palce by China.

  233. papajoe2 March 8, 2012 5:30 pm

Das how dey got chicken katsu curddy.

  234. Steve March 8, 2012 5:31 pm

Kevin, weather report calls for more rain, and some thunderstorms, Friday and Saturday, hopefully they are wrong. Coolen should request for artificial turf in the outfield. If he had that, they would be able to play tonite.

    Ipulasi Eselu???

  237. Ipu Man March 8, 2012 7:07 pm

I think curds and whey is a milk by product used to make cheese,

and cottage cheese and muscle powder they try to sell you in those

    big plastic jars.

  238. MattyBoy March 8, 2012 7:07 pm

    Al,

It would be a great pickup indeed if Fehoko chooses Hawaii!!! But I still believe he will choose the SEC.

  239. Ipu Man March 8, 2012 7:08 pm

So little miss muffet was probably quite muscular…

  240. rainbowfan March 8, 2012 7:50 pm

I don’t think another coach could have done much better than Dana did in three years. Don’t look for coach Norm to do much better than Coach Mac’s 6-7.

  241. duffer March 8, 2012 7:55 pm

    Stee,

It was Hanneman that made those two ladies go to WSU.

Plus I think Pomai scarier than Kevin!

  242. duffer March 8, 2012 7:56 pm

    Ooops Steve not Stee 🙁

  243. Steve March 8, 2012 8:16 pm

For everyones information, the MBB game against NMSU will be shown on KFVE, tomorrow at 4 PM.

  244. kapakahi March 8, 2012 8:55 pm

    http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=2&c=1165692&ssf=1&RequestedURL=http%3a%2f%2frecruiting.scout.com%2f2%2f1165692.html

Now that Moanalua DT prospect Scott Pagano has stated that he wants to announce his college choice by August 10 (the date of his first game of the season) so that he can focus on playing football his senior season, let’s hope that Norm and staff are making a strong early push for Pagano NOW since he’s piling up more and more BCS scholie offers…..especially from Pac-12 schools….every week.

DT is a definite need position for Warriors for 2013 recruiting class with Geordon Hanohano and Haku Correa being seniors this coming season….with only Siasau Matagiese, Moses Samia, and Calen Friel the only other DT returnees….since Dustin Elisara moving to FB.

Since Gus Lavaka might go on his two-year LDS mission before joining Warriors, that would leave only incoming true frosh Dejon Allen (and Mikey Andrade?) as part of the DT corp…unless there are some new walk-ons and/or transfers.

  245. whitey March 8, 2012 9:01 pm

kapakahi, can understand why players want to make commits early, but sometimes hard to make commit cause visit are not allowed till college start school. i guess, this is why texas put so much empahasis on jr days.

  246. whitey March 8, 2012 9:04 pm

interesting that da warriors have someone like kauhaahaa from utah on their recruiting list. why, i think he is related to the utah coach c kauhaahaa.

  247. duffer March 8, 2012 9:43 pm

Eh whitey did you send a e-mail to Dana?

  248. whitey March 8, 2012 10:21 pm

duffer, you up kinda late??? yes, I did.

  249. Kaimuki Kid March 8, 2012 10:24 pm

    Cottage cheese is curds.

  250. SteveM March 8, 2012 10:26 pm

duffer — i just sent DTD an email too. I seldom get involved in such things, but this parting was bittersweet even though expected. She did a lot to bolster Hawaii’s reputation.

  251. homey ℞ March 8, 2012 10:57 pm

Kazz…er Kevin is not scary. Neither is Pomai. It’s the one you least expect is the one that can snap at any moment…like Powderpuff. Bwahahaha!

    Goodnight world.

  252. al March 9, 2012 12:29 am

hmmm…win another and we get to the cit.

win two more and gibber gets an automatic 1yr extension.

…oh and the auto birth to the big dance.

    can dream right?

  253. al March 9, 2012 12:30 am

    so two dreams going on…

dream of the big dance for mbb.

dream of the big guy from san mateo for hc chow.

dream of lunch with ahouse and mattyboy.

    haha

  254. al March 9, 2012 12:43 am

so, mild-mannered reporter for a new merged paper.

ya think that this time there won’t be someone to overturn the wbb head coach choice of the selection, by “tweaking” the minimum qualifications as stated in the job vacancy announcement?

  255. al March 9, 2012 12:52 am

    oxymoron?

ad says he wanted to make a quick decision to move in a new direction so that the new coach would have some time to sign recruits.

the signing period is about four weeks away and it’ll take two weeks to get someone in house. the resulting action is 4 – 2 = 2 , weeks that is. heck, even norm chow could not move that fast.

if the ad wanted to give the new hc a legit shot he should have cut bait earlier. i think all along this was going to happen and in hawaii’s typical fashion it came rather late, again.

    one day we will realize that there is some truth to the old saying;

    “he who hesitates is lost.”

  256. al March 9, 2012 12:55 am

reminder…tomw mbb game vs new mex st is live at 4 pm on ch 1012.

gib got his wish, he wanted to play nmsu to atone for that 40+ point wipeout that they suffered at the hands of the aggies.

  257. al March 9, 2012 12:55 am

…and will the announcement come today???

  258. slenzi March 9, 2012 2:06 am

For WBB and other non-big ticket sports, a new head coach cannot always bring in a whole new staff … its the cost of moving to and living in Hawaii. Unless i missed my guess, any new coach will be looking local, or looking for someone who wants to return to Hawaii as an assistant. We still got sticker shock in Honolulu.

  259. wafan March 9, 2012 2:54 am
