Colt makes the list

It always appeared as if Colt Brennan were an ambassador for Hawaiโ€˜i.
Maybe he does have political juice.
Colt has been invited to attend the Jan. 20 presidential inauguration, according to his father, Terry Brennan.
“I hope he wears matching shoes,” Terry mused.
Terry also said Colt had successful arthroscopic surgery to correct a “meniscus” problem. The procedure took about about 10 minutes, and Colt already has resumed weight training.
Colt arrives in Hawaiโ€˜i Feb. 3, and will stay for about a month.

Colt- the 3rd stringer- is the HOPE of the WASHINGTON Redskins. I am not surprised that he was invited to the Inauguration. Hawaii ties notwithstanding, Colt is an east coast phenom in the making. If anything, his tie to Hawaii has brought out a bunch of ignorant haters. I can’t wait for the NFL pre-season and a chance to see CB5 light it up again and earn his way to a higher position.

    WOW- Giants are self-destructing.

    Hi Brew!

RE: UNLV game… We’re getting 2 rooms this time ๐Ÿ˜€

I may be getting some extra tickets – so we have more room on the bench. It depends on how much they are.

  19. Stephen Tsai January 11, 2009 11:19 am

Anyone else notice how giddy newscasters seem when they’re announcing impending storms?
All of our paper’s East Honolulu leaders get like that, too. That’s because they weren’t around for the big New Year’s Eve storm in the 1980s, when the Hawaiโ€˜i Kai streets started cracking.

  20. Justin January 11, 2009 11:22 am

anyone know who the five JC transfers are currently enrolled at UH?

  23. Stephen Tsai January 11, 2009 11:29 am

    Justin:
i think I posted it a few weeks ago, but I’m not sure where I put the list. But it was two Texas guys, Brett Leonard, the San Mateo DT and a defensive back whose name escapes me at the moment. Because of APR restrictions and graduations and such, they could only bring in in five at the break. That’s why Chizzy has to wait until May.

  24. 99club January 11, 2009 11:33 am

    Congrats Colt! Have fun.

I worked as an Inaugural Committee limo driver in 1984-85. It was -20 on the night of the 19th and so cold that they had the ceremony indoors the next day. All I did the night before was deliver space heaters and parkas to the troops on the Mall! That was the only time I’ve seen the Potomac River iced over.

  29. FloridaTed January 11, 2009 11:42 am

Considering that Colt is ‘only’ a third stringer (at the moment), he sure gets publicity like a starter.

Shows you the force of his personality.

I’ve heard that he will compete for at least back-up this pre-season. Makes sense to me.

  30. brew808 January 11, 2009 11:43 am

  49. A-House January 11, 2009 12:13 pm

    Mr. Ferd Lewis:

I read your column this morning and am somewhat dissapointed in some of your comments regarding “why” Hawaii played certain teams on the road.

I, for one, believe that if you want to be amongst the best you play the best – doesn’t matter where or the final score. It gives the coaches and players and fans the opportunity to witness what the “upper level” of competition is like and what UH must do to reach that level. It may enocurage more people to donate (money, material, labor) to UH sports.

As for Florida, Urban Meyer, like the cry baby he was while at Utah, never wanted to play Hawaii at home because of (you list the excuses)———–. He does not want to lose to UH while at “powerful” Florida. Make ass for him!! Did you see his face during the entire first quarter at the Swamp? He could not believe the UH would be so tough and hold them scoreless! Unfortunately, the turnovers and a miraculous fumble where the ball was fumbled “forward” and bounced back into the arms of Tebow hurt the Warriors. If Alexander’s pass to the wide open WR was not over thrown, score would have been UH 7 and Florida 0 at the end of the first quarter.

How many mid-major football teams can say that they played against 5 national championship teams – ony Hawaii. It would be interesting if the Boise States, Utah, TCU, and BYU played against Florida and Georgia and USC and see the final scores. BTW, Florida best South Carolina 66-10, but did anyone read how Florida BLASTED the Gamecocks? Did anyone hear any sports analyst or sports caster say how badly the Gamecocks got beat? I did not! Guess its easy to blast Hawaii, but leave the SEC alone.

So, James Donovan, get well soon and continue to schedule the very best teams to play Hawaii – here or away – we will be there!!!

  50. Da Punchbowl Kid January 11, 2009 12:13 pm

    Hey Tsai-

I notice in some of your posts, you start by saying : “word on the street says”.
When you get the “word on the street”, is it on the street in front of your house in the morning? Or is it somewhere else? The only words I’ve seen on the street are “stop” and “yield”. What’s up with that?

    ๐Ÿ˜† j/k of course…

  51. brew808 January 11, 2009 12:14 pm

The World Buffet or the all you can eat ribs buffet at Red Rock are the leaders for the “formal” banquet.

Will you be in the area?

Las Vegas is working on finding a place for the Tsaiko gathering on 9/18/09. Maybe, the World Buffet at Rio will make his list. One down point is that they go not take reservations for large groups and it has no room large enough for us.

I say, let UH’s athletic progam be the cream of the crop that it can be. In the hardest of times, the most excellent will stay the most excellent and the half-hearted will fall.

bighilofan2 — gotcha listed, and knowing your past concerns in getting tckets to away games, I will try to explain…

Rich2176 will be obtaining the tickets. We do not know when, but we do know he will come through. You will be dealing directly with Rich. Please be patient.

Once he has the tickets Rich2176 will probably announce on the blog and send emails to the people who requested tickets. His email will give confirmation and any payment instructions. If he does not have your email address, I do via the survey and I will send him a listing of name, email, and ticket number when he is ready. In the meantime, the info is posted on the LAS 2009 web page to give a general overview and visible assurance that ticket/party requests were received.

I will continue to collect ticket requests until Rich2176 is ready and tailgate and FRIDAY night party RSVPs until Sept. via the survey at:
    http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=_2b0TEhRn0xTX82JQRdJ2gyQ_3d_3d

If you cannot get into the survey or have subsequent changes, please email me at: stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com

    brew-
    Fat Tire Ale.

    Liz-
My first time in TX I was in a large grocery store (Furr’s I think) and I kid you not: on the same aisle the display went from milk, eggs, butter, then guns.

    jm2375-
I remember the Air Florida crash. Howard Stern was a shock jock at one of the DC stations at the time and he called Air Florida reservations the morning of the crash to ask how much the fare was from DC National to the 14th Street bridge. I can’t stand the guy to this day.

  157. roysan16 January 11, 2009 2:55 pm

I am glad A-House wrote about how he was disappointed that Ferd wrote a column saying it wasn’t a good idea that Hawaii played Florida on the road. Because I agree similarly with what A-House said. And I’m disappointed at Ferd, too, for not looking beyond the horizon.

The residual effects down the road far outweigh the hardships of the Hawaii team traveling so far. And not getting a return date with Florida at Aloha Stadium.

Not withstanding all the fervor and passion for the Florida game it’s the fan’s interests in games scheduled like this that adds to the fervor and passion for the program.

I think it’s games like this, more importantly, *that sparks the fervor and passion in the youth across the state*.

The indelible impression that it leaves on kids, as they watch our Hawaii team take a bad beating to the Florida team I believe *lights a fire in them* where some of this fervor and passion transcends down onto them and they do someday want to stay home and play for the Warriors.

In the living rooms across the state the youth, the littlest ones growing up, *see the sorrows* on their parent’s face as their moms and dads cheerfully and, more so, cry fully moan the losses and drubbings of the the Hawaii team taking in the Sugar Bowl game and at Florida. The lasting impression in games like this, has what I believe contributes to the defining moment in the kid’s life, for here they are watching the Hawaii team on the national stage playing the best teams in the nation and getting beat up. It’s this *transference of pain and sadness of Hawaii getting beat up that serves as their wave of inspiration that someday may drive them to ascend in sports or elsewhere*. Yet, preferable and hopefully, someday to the UH program.

So there is more beyond the horizon than what meets the eye. And people should realize this.

Furthermore, I look at our youth today that are ascending onto the national and world stage-Brian Clay, Natash Kai, the two time World Champion Little Leaguers, Shane Victorino and many NFL players from Hawaii. And I pause and reflect in my mind if somewhere along the way if there were times when they watched their parents, uncles, aunties, neighbors and friends with tears and impassioned emotion after a Warrior loss. And if this made them steadfast in their pursuits.

So in the end I would instead bridge the gap and continue playing the highest calibre teams in the country, here or away, because not only am I in agreement of “if you want to be the best you have to play the best theory”. But I firmly believe if this Warrior team ideology(playing the best anytime, anywhere) if continued and remain adopted is self serving to our youth as they, too, watch.. And this is important. And priceless. And the trickle down effect one can see how it can be foretelling as we are beginning to see today as our youth are ascending.

Note-To Al. Regarding #208. I’m very flattered you offered to include me.
But I’m having a hard time with my life right now, or for that matter most of my life, because it just seems like I’m rolling one gutter ball after the next. And not exposing who I am, namely having others seeing how inconsequential my life is I think this allows me to save face. And this is the honest answer. Nothing to do with me being condescending or snobbish because I really don’t try to be.. I do think you guys are a swell group. And it warms me to see pictures of you all having fun at tailgates and Karaoke.

Honestly, I really don’t care if UH gets $600,000 or $1 million from a game. It’s not my money.
As far as I can tell, UH hasn’t canceled any sports or games because of finances. And the lights and A/C still work in the Sheriff Center. So, really, what do I care?
Now if somebody can tell me who’s going to play right tackle, that I’m interested in.

  171. Stephen Tsai January 11, 2009 3:13 pm

For instance, UH projects a shortfall for this fiscal year.
Well, UH’s fiscal year is based on the academic calendar. So the official numbers aren’t due until June 30. Then they get audited twice. And a report is issued in, I dunno, October or November. So why the heck should I care in the first week of January about projections?
    But I digress.
I’m just irked because these numbers stories are burying my volleyball stories.

Thank you for your eloquent post on how UH losses can affect our youth and perhaps contribute to their future successes.

This is another way of making a “contribution” to UH – it’s not only the money (large or small) or other material contributions that will make UH better; it’s our TOTAL effort that counts and we can take pride in all our contributions.

Like LizK says, no matter what your current situation is, come join us and make as many memories as you can that will sustain you at all times. I believe that’s the way it is for all of us. Total strangers who found a medium for fun, food, football, and becoming very special friends.

    roysan-

I don’t attend as many Tsaiko functions as some here do, but without exception, when I do attend one, it’s pure bliss. My son attended this last week’s CC for djmitcho and came away extremely impressed by the variety and niceness of those in attendance.

You are an extremely intelligent and thoughtful poster, as evidenced by what you write here, and I have one word for you: engage. Even if you can’t make it to all of the functions due to financial or personal considerations, try to make it to at least a couple of functions, you’ll see what all the fuss is about.

It’s sounds cliche or maybe even like I’m blowing smoke, but I have met some of the best folks I’ve ever known here, and being a Tsaiko has truly changed my life for the better in many ways. As A-House and others have suggested, it really is about friendship and happiness, regardless of what ever else is going on with us as individuals.

Find a way if you can… I f you need a ride or other help let us know. Somebody will be glad to help. You are, by the quality of your posts, a quintessential Tsaiko and we’d all love to meet you. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Speakin’ of Colt…

I have a dream. One day, after an All Pro career, he will return to Hawaii, become the youngest head coach ever at UH, win it all a few times and then run for Governor. And win. That’s my dream.

    Okay, time for my nap.

brew808: Angry Whopper can be gotten as a regular, a double, or a triple. I don’t think you can get it as a Jr. Eh, it’s okay โ€” there’s pepperjack cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, battered onions, jalapeรฑos, and ketchup. I was hungry yesterday, so I got it for lunch. Very messy, but it left me full for a while.

LizKauai: IDK anything about a math commercial. I’ll keep an eye out for it, though.

d1: Hehe, you must really be enjoying that DVD set.

  209. brew808 January 11, 2009 4:59 pm

Okay – I like that dream too! But for some reason, I don’t see the coaching path. After a long and storied NFL career, I see Colt going directly into the sportscasting booth (like SF#8). All the while, he’s an active Warrior booster, helping w/ recruitingm, fund-raising, and mentoring from the side. Then moving on to AD or 808 politics…. Hey, but I’m cheering for the Tarheels…. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ™„

  212. 99club January 11, 2009 5:40 pm

The thing I hear most about Tyler Hansbrough is that he needs a consistent mid-range jumper to really be successful at the next level.

Yeah, I had satellite with all the sports bells and whistles but switched to cable right at the end of the November. We were unhappy with the local channel reception…really blurry.

  215. Garret January 11, 2009 5:45 pm

their concern was that boosters arenโ€™t supposed to influence recruits. i figured since he verbaled in July, weโ€™re pretty sure what his intent is. i might need people to promise not to be boosters if they wish to ask questions.

    ST,

Sadly, according to NCAA rules, most of the people who post here are *already* boosters. And there are major problems that occur when boosters communicate with recruits before they sign their NLI. An “accidental bump” is allowed, when you run into someone in person by accident and happen to say hi…but anything online would be termed *not* accidental. It would be very, very easy to get UH in trouble with the NCAA over Corey Nielsen.

Once people give money to a school, like the Tsaikos have done already, or a group has gotten together to support the athletic program (JUGS machine, selling t-shirts and giving the proceeds to Na Koa or the Athletic Department), then those people are pretty much considered boosters for the rest of their lives. Other Tsaikos donate regularly to UH or the Athletic Department, and some are Na Koa members. They cannot promise to not be boosters in the future…they are already boosters.

Verbals do *not* reduce the restrictions on boosters communicating with recruits. This is not first amendment rights, as the NCAA is not a government entity. Otherwise, you could have UH arrange to have boosters meet with recruits during recruiting trips or in chat rooms…those things would automatically prevent the recruit from ever signing with UH.

So, on this occasion (and this is rare!), I side with the compliance people about the need for caution. For example, I can think of at least 10 questions that would make Corey Nielsen forbidden from signing with UH and could result in other sanctions. I would *not* ask those questions, but others could ask them out of curiousity or out of a desire to help recruiting. Or, you could have fans of other teams (you know that some read this blog) pose as UH fans and use the chat to get UH into trouble. That would NOT be something that UH needs so close to NLI day.

Long day for me (park picnic, birthday party for 2 friends, etc.) and I need to put my kids to bed now. I hate being a downer anyway, and this was not a positive post.

  219. brew808 January 11, 2009 6:10 pm

I don’t know the letter of the rules…. but I have to say that I don’t believe that is an allowable question! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ I think you can ask about his stats, his play, his HS, even his visit to 808 and the campus. But I don’t believe you can ask anything that can be construed as enticement, recruiting, or influencing his decision in any way or form. IMHO ๐Ÿ˜

Frankly, I don’t think we should do this. IMHO. I don’t want the Tsaikos to be in ANY way responsible for messing up student athlete’s future…. ๐Ÿ˜

  221. wafan January 11, 2009 6:21 pm

I agree with Garret and Brew. Better safe than sorry. The opportunity for a blogger from an opposing school to ruin it for Cory and the UH is too great. Better to keep it low key now and then blog with him after he signs.

Besides, Cory probably visits this site already and knows of our interest and excitement in anticipation of his signing and arrival!

What the heck? We have waited this long, what is another bunch of weeks?

  222. Manoa January 11, 2009 6:28 pm

I am glad that we are not doing the chats– no sense taking a chance– other schools have gotten burned and most now try to stop anything like that on websites or blogs.

There is another problem for UH, they must try to stop the blogging/chatting, otherwise it is something they will need to investigate and quite likely have to self report to the NCAA. This is what got a lot of schools concerned. So from the compliance standpoint, better to stop it than to allow it and have to report it as a possible violation they knew about.

  223. bighilofan2 January 11, 2009 6:39 pm

For all of you coming out to Seattle for the WSU game on 9/12 . . . otherwise, you might want to skip this post.

Izzy is checking on breakfast and brunch buffets in the area. It does not look good. High prices or non-existent. Will continue looking, but may be changed to a dinner buffet. Problem is that Seattle just does not have very many Tsai-ko friendly (inexpensive with lots of good food) buffets.

On the other hand, for those looking for hotel/motel rooms in the Seattle area, Izzy suggests these (cut and paste the hotel internet sites in a new window to open):

The line about protein folding reminds me of the featured speaker at the conference I attended last summer. His name is Dr. Erik Demaine, and he’s a professor at MIT. He earned his Ph.D. and joined the MIT faculty at age 20! His series of talks was on having fun with math, and one of the things he did was talk about origami. He tied that to his work on computational origami, which deals with folding algorithms similar to those being studied in protein folding.

i know many have been also lambasting ron lee. but, if the parts don’t work as it was draw up on the drafting table then the structure cannot be built. we certainly had many parts missing.

i also believe that the coordinators should be cut loose and allowed to run and direct their kuleana as described in their job descriptions. the lee brothers know what needs to be done and know how to call a game if they were allowed to.

for example, ron lee was never conservative in his play calling in the past. even when his second and third string went in the game plan was still carried out as if the first team was in, thus, sharpening the skills of the bench and creating depth. he would only call off the dogs until a four-five td lead was had in the fourth quarter.

i hope that the coordinators are given a free reign this coming year. coach mack needs to let go the purse strings.

al- Kauai also had a drowning – but for a different reason. Luckily, my son was off that day. But it was in the area that he guards.

only snowed twice since i been here. getting lots of sun, but super cold.

there was a small article/editorial today in the Denver post about 21st century recruiting and blogging. apparently college coaches are now writing blogs to keep fans informed. maybe tsai can relay the message to Mack and he can start a blog.

    http://www.denverpost.com/colleges/ci_11421121

  267. letsgowarriors January 11, 2009 9:41 pm

btw, how come Mack has not commented on the 5 JC transfers that have already signed their LOI?

  268. Da Punchbowl Kid January 11, 2009 9:44 pm

Ya know, wif all o’ dis chat/ncaaa rules controversy here tonight, I’m glad we have the wise counsel of bhf2, Esquire and Papio fisherman extraordinaire.

Somewhere, a man with a big forehead, who has remained strangely silent while we worried and posted about the chat thing is having a good chuckle at at our antics. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So the initial rules stand, I guess, no head butts, eye gouging, folding chairs etc. … ๐Ÿ˜†

  269. uhwarriors January 11, 2009 9:45 pm

Even though we are thrilled that a prospect has verbally committed to the Warriors, we need to be very careful in communicating with him or his family on a blog, message board or via any other means (i.e. myspace, facebook, etc.).

The long and the short of it is that if you have ever been a member of Na Koa or any UH booster club or contributed to any UH booster club, Koa Anuenue or the UH athletic department, you are considered a โ€œrepresentative of the institutionโ€™s athletics interestโ€ and you retain that status indefinitely (NCAA Rule 13.02.13). You should be aware that if you pay a โ€œpremium seat contributionโ€ for any sport, you are making a contribution to Koa Anuenue.

If you fall under the definition above, you are a โ€œrepresentative of the institutionโ€™s athletics interestโ€ and cannot have any contact with a recruit or his family until he has enrolled in school. If you inadvertently come into contact with a recruit or his family, you shall โ€œnot engage in any dialogue in excess of a greetingโ€ and must โ€œtake appropriate steps to immediately terminate the encounterโ€ (NCAA Rule 13.02.3). So for those of you may fall under the definition of โ€œrepresentative of the institutionโ€™s athletics interestโ€, please be careful about any communication with recruits and their families.

  271. Da Punchbowl Kid January 11, 2009 9:50 pm

I think since we have the legal counsel here, it’s time to ask the hard hitting question that’s on everybody’s minds at this point…

What did you use for bait for dat papio? ๐Ÿ˜†

  272. Pomai January 11, 2009 9:54 pm

The whole ncaa is a joke, but the problem is that it is a joke we have to live with. Better to error on the side of caution, schedule his chat after he sign’s. They can over look the sh!t the USC’s of the world do but would be all over UH like a ton of bricks.

  273. Da Punchbowl Kid January 11, 2009 9:55 pm

    I share whitey’s “Papio envy”.

  274. alโ„ข January 11, 2009 9:56 pm

  280. uhwarriors January 11, 2009 10:01 pm

    Pomai,

The way the NCAA rules are written, “boosters” can’t have contact with recruits until they are enrolled and attending school. It doesn’t matter if the recruit has signed a letter of intent.

  281. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER January 11, 2009 10:05 pm

Hey folks if you are in search of a Colt Brennan Redskins Jersey or Davone Bess Dolphins Jersey, check out http://www.prideofhawaiisports.com

I called the guy and met up with him to first check out the Jerseys (to ensure the numbers, name, and sleeve logos were sewn on, and he also let me try it on.

    Awesome wears…
He will be at the Colt Brennan for Leukemia fund raiser at the willows on Feb 3rd…
Check out the link below for more info
    http://www.sportshawaii.com/sh/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=29724

Word on the street is that Davone and many other NFL guys (with Hawaii ties or not) may also be at the Willows that night.

Anyway I have no affiliation to http://www.prideofhawaiisports.com but chose to help the local braddah and shop local.

    Al,
I’m be wearing my new Jersey when I see you at the Pro Bowl Family Day.. You gonna be there, again, right?

  286. Garret January 11, 2009 10:30 pm

If Corey starts school at UH tomorrow, then the chat should be okay. Early admits who are in school before NLI day do not sign the same type of NLI agreement, so the signature isn’t what would be important. So, if he’s in school then that changes things.

However, I hadn’t seen it specified that he was going to be in school. Plus, I don’t understand why the compliance person would object to the chat if he was a current UH student–just like we’ve had blog guests from lots of the Warriors.

So, either there is absolutely no harm (because he’s enrolled at UH) and the compliance person is way off in the objection…or he’s not involved in school and there could be a big problem.

  287. Garret January 11, 2009 10:31 pm

“involved in school” should be “enrolled at UH”

  288. Garret January 11, 2009 10:36 pm

but, how can they prove who you are?

    Al,

That is my biggest worry, the anonymity. We already have Tsaikos who pretend they are other people and we have a False Al. It would be easy for a fan of another WAC school to pretend to be a UH booster and ask the wrong question to Corey…and then UH would have to self-report the potential violation and UH would have to go after this blog. That could get messy, and it would also potentially bar Corey from going to UH and cost UH other ways in recruiting.

I really don’t want any chat with a potential recruit who isn’t enrolled at UH and hasn’t signed a NLI. I really cringed when David Graves (I assume that was him, I’ve been busy and haven’t checked back to make sure) went on SportsHawaii and posted, and a couple Warrior fans directed questions/comments towards him.

  289. Garret January 11, 2009 10:40 pm

It looks like these types of issues might go away soon…the coaches want an early signing period (it would probably be in December) and it might get adopted. I’ve been posting in favor of an early signing period for quite some time–it would be great to let the athletes put the process behind them and it would save on recruiting time and money. Plus, it would give the big-name schools less time to go after committed recruits. Did you notice that UCLA got 4 commits yesterday, 3 of them had given verbal commits to other schools?

The American Football Coaches Association has forwarded a proposal for an early signing day for college football recruits and it wil be reviewed by conference commissioners this Thursday.

“We’re looking for an early signing day in the third week of December,” Rob Ianello, Notre Dame assistant and head of the AFCA FBS Assistant Coaches Committee, said at the coaches convention in Nashville. “There are more than 1,000 verbal committments right now, and about 15 per school. Why not sign them? Is it a reservation or a committment? What we’re seeing is oversigning and late switches. An earlier signing day would also be cost effective.”

Ianello said the large majority of coaches are in favor of a signing day before the traditional one in February.

  290. Garret January 11, 2009 10:42 pm

This South Florida Sun-Sentinel reporter has been very positive towards Samson and Davone all season, but this article is less than positive.

Here is a position-by-position breakdown of what the Dolphins will find in their postseason analysis:

This group was blossoming before Greg Camarillo suffered a season-ending knee injury. Ted Ginn Jr., Davone Bess and Brandon London all have promise, but need some refining.

Ernest Wilford turned out to be a free-agent bust. The Dolphins will likely trade or release him. Wilford was paid $7 million and made only three catches in 2008.

The Dolphins might address this position by signing a veteran or two considering Camarillo, Ginn, Bess and London have only seven years of NFL experience combined. Depth is an issue.

The interior was an issue all season, and it prevented the Dolphins from effectively running between the tackles.

Getting Justin Smiley and Donald Thomas back from their season-ending foot and leg injuries should help, but the Dolphins might need to find a bigger and more physical center than Samson Satele.

  291. Garret January 11, 2009 10:43 pm

This article about the winners and losers of the bowl season mentioned UH.

Non-BCS teams: Utah won, but the other seven bowls matching BCS vs. non-BCS teams all went to the big boys by an average of 15.1 points.

Hawaii: The Rainbow Warriors got essentially a home game against struggling Notre Dame and were routed by four touchdowns.

  292. Pomai January 11, 2009 11:13 pm

    uhwarriors
Well then if he’s in school then go for it. But IMHO coach Mac has enough problems, he doesn’t need us causing any additional. Like I said better to error on the side of caution. Heck we can wait another month or so!!!!

  293. uhwarriors January 11, 2009 11:28 pm

I just re-read the rule on when a “prospective student athlete” or recruit is no longer considered a recruit and thus cannot have any contact with “boosters”. In addition to enrolling and starting school, the status also ends when the athlete participates in practices or games if those occur prior to the start of school. (Rule 13.02.11). So the earliest opportunity for “no problems” contact would appear to be in early August for athletes coming in the fall.

Please understand that I am not an expert with NCAA rules. I just try to find the applicable rules in the over 400 page NCAA rules manual and try to understand them.

  294. TOM January 12, 2009 12:11 am

Perhaps as a matter of abundance of caution, we should NOT ask any questions of Corey – if he wants to write something on the blog, it probably will be OK but I would avoid asking any questions or making any comments just to be on the safe side which would include welcome to the blog or the warrior nation.

Better safe than sorry for us, and better safe than lousing up a player hopes.

  295. grapes January 12, 2009 1:29 am

dont even have him on. wait til he commits on signing day. he is NOT at UH now. i dont think stutzman is either, but i am not sure.

Yum! You guys make me jealous of the fresh fish. Even if I can find the same type of fish here it just does not taste the same. Must have to do with how old it is, where it was caught, and with whom I am sharing the meal.

Information for people coming up for the WSU game in September . . .

Still checking on possible venues for a game day lunch or dinner. Difficult because Seattle just does not have very many buffets and, most importantly, the prices are high.

Once several possibilities are identified will let you know.

Some time later, another Tsai-ko shows up rummages around, patiently waits for a bit, then leaves because no one else shows up.

Is this a portent of things to come today?

    Egads.

  323. wafan January 12, 2009 6:46 am

Finally got one of my bags returned on Saturday. On the return trip from LAX last Tuesday the agent was very incompetent. Could not identify me on his screen, argued about the need to pay for an additional bag that was supposed to be free (I had the paperwork but he refused to read it — I wonder if he could read English), and sent that bag on an around the world trip to . . . COPENHAGEN via SAS.

Yep. Interesting people working in our airline industry.

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Re: Lost Bags – at least you are at home where you get clean spare underwear…..

  327. Manoa January 12, 2009 7:03 am

There are limits on the coaches’ comments. I believe they are entitled to one press conference on the recruits they sign, so if they have a conference on the signed JC’s, they might not be able to have one on the high school signees (someone correct me if I am wrong).

The early signing is badly needed– unfortunately, many of the big conferences and best teams have been opposing it since they can pounce on the kids with verbals to the smaller schools like us. It also lets a coach like Mack identify the kids who really want to become Warriors and are truly ready to sign with their parents.

  328. wafan January 12, 2009 7:05 am

    Kekoa . . .

Been looking around. Problem is finding a restaurant that is big enough for up to 30-40 people that will not close to other business.

Even checking on the possibility of doing a catered event. Just need to find a location that is inexpensive and easy to reach.

Of course, price is a major concern. I figure something between $20-$30 for dinner per person for dinner is reasonable in the Seattle area.

From now on I am going to check those luggage tags before they go down that chute.

  336. Pride. January 12, 2009 7:30 am

    A-House:

    January 11th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
    Mr. Ferd Lewis:

I read your column this morning and am somewhat dissapointed in some of your comments regarding โ€œwhyโ€ Hawaii played certain teams on the road.

I, for one, believe that if you want to be amongst the best you play the best – doesnโ€™t matter where or the final score. It gives the coaches and players and fans the opportunity to witness what the โ€œupper levelโ€ of competition is like and what UH must do to reach that level. It may enocurage more people to donate (money, material, labor) to UH sports.

Thanks A-House, you took the words right out of my mouth. We need to have the play anyone, anytime, anywhere attitude. We can compete against anyone. We need to have the attitude that we can compete against Florida, USC, LSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Texas and believe that we can beat them, because they can be beat. Those top tier schools do have the best talent in the nation, but we need to teach our young men that if they prepare and excecute, they can beat anyone at any given time.

Part of coaching student athletes is to teach young people the skills that they need to succeed in life. In a few years our Warriors will be out in world working in their chosen field. We need to teach them now, how to prepare themselves, and then to perform at the best level that they possibly can. We need to teach our Warriors not to back down from challenges. even the ones that appear to be impossible to overcome. Remember that these athletes will be the ones that we depend on in a few years to protect us. They may be FBI agents, Secret Sevice Agents, Navy Seals, DEA Agents, Commissioned Officers in combat, Helicopter pilots in the army guard, F-20 pilots in the Air Guard, Undercover HPD officers, High School football coaches, HECO Engineers, Firefighters, jobs that will be very challenging at one time or another. It is here at the University, on the football field where they will learn how into run to fire when everyone else is running away, face down a husband as an SSD officer for HPD, who’s holding his family hostage, fly a helicopter into hostile territory to pick up a downed pilot in the Middle East.

We will not do our players any favors by teaching them to back down from challenges. The challenges that they will face in their future will be far more intimidating than facing a receiver who runs a 4.28 40, or facing an offensive tackle who stands 6-9 345.

So I agree with A-House, have bags packed and ready to travel.

Back to school for the Warriors, Jason, Kelli, all UH students and da public school kids.

Last semester for Jason & Kelli!! Senioritis kicking in yet? My dept had a policy that graduating seniors didn’t need to take the final if they were getting an A or B.

    Good Morning Everyone!

    wafan,
I know what you mean about losing luggage. The first time I ever paid for an airline ticket (my dad worked for united, so I flew on a pass), was the summer between my SO and JR in college. I worked in Alaska that summer and on my trip back I had 3 pieces of luggage. 2 bags and one cooler box filled with fish, crab and shrimp. When I got to Spokane, I only got one piece and it wasn’t the food. For some reason, they forgot to take it off the plane and sent it on to Montana, along with most of my clothes. Luckily they delivered the next day and it was still frozen.

I hope today’s blog reads something like this. Long Beach Poly players Iuta Tepa and George Daily-Liles reaffirmed their commitment to the Warriors today with Tepa cancelling his remaining visits also joining them will be Long Beach Poly Safety Stan McKay he has also cancelled all remaining visits. When asked for the reason all three gave the same answer Hawaii is a place like no other we feel this place will help us become better people and they have the “Best Fans in The World”.
