Hawaii moves up a spot from the preseason poll to No. 6 today

Hooray! Movin’ on up! I would like to see this lineup at least once during the Grand Canyon series to see how it works (below). I have a feeling that I am not the only one that thinks that this might be our most potent lineup. Of course, what is really important is consistency and the ability to keep the mistakes to a minimal. Because there is a big difference between hitting a ball with terrifying velocity into the court as opposed to out of it.

    MB – Gasman, Mol
    OH – Von Tilburg, Matautia
    S – Franciskovic
    OPP – Parapunov
    L – Tuileta

  2. Warriorfan January 9, 2017 2:20 pm

I want to see that lineup too the only thing is Stijn and Austins passing needs to hold up well especially against big serving teams like ohio state and ucla.

  3. Roxy January 9, 2017 2:51 pm

Well this is a surprise. Never would’ve thought that Dunning would retire before Shoji

  4. eric96822 January 9, 2017 3:08 pm

Wow, never saw this one coming. Ok Plummer and Fitzmorris and that fantastic Libero, transfer to Hawaii. Here… Just kidding. Or am I?

  5. haleiwacrossfitter January 9, 2017 3:50 pm

#4. No way a Stanford player transfers. It would be shocking if one did. I don’t recall any Stanford players, or at least starters, ever transferring from there. Players go to Stanford for the program and the school, not for Dunning.

Not a dig at Dunning, he’s a great coach. But Stanford itself is the main draw to the athlete.

This is going to send a ripple through the college coaching ranks. A top coach will leave another program and one will be needed to replace that coach and so forth. Stanford will only hire the best. I could even see a Karch Kiraly pulling a John Speraw and coaching both Stanford and the national team. Who knows. But some top program is going to lose their coach to Stanford.

  6. Maverick January 9, 2017 4:11 pm

    5. Agreed. And why leave a team that is favored to repeat? In any case, not sure UH has any scholies left to offer any transfer.

  7. Cindy Luis January 9, 2017 4:23 pm

    3. thanks just saw that about Dunning.
    7. thanks. mentioned Kan a month ago. Did not know about Bunn

  8. Cindy Luis January 9, 2017 4:31 pm

Some roster changes for the Warriors. Machado and Frank no longer with team but they picked up Isaac Liva today. Played three seasons at HBA, then football, volleyball and basketball senior year at Mililani. Redshirted for Warrior football this past season as a DL. is listed at 6-5 depth, played right side for Eagles and Trjoans.

  9. warriorfan January 9, 2017 4:34 pm

Wow too bad about Nainoa Frank, I thought he showed great potential last year, was unstoppable at times with Joe setting him.

Not really shocked about Dunning, better to go out on top, seemed like he always wanted to retire at a normal age.

My bet is Stanford will try to get McCutcheon from Minnesota and I think he takes it, it’s way easier to recruit there and win.

  10. warriorfan January 9, 2017 4:37 pm

I just hope no one takes Dan Fisher , he’s my pick for UH when coach Shoji retires but could see the school that loses a coach to stanford considering him.

  11. warriorfan January 9, 2017 4:53 pm

Nice to have Carly Kan and Cali Bunn added to an already loaded team. Any idea which indoor players will play besides Emma and Mags?

  12. Cindy Luis January 9, 2017 5:45 pm

    12. have mentioned before who crosses over from indoor.
Mitchem, Castillo, Kahakai, Anderson, Guinasso in addition to Maglio and Smith . Taylor still listed on the roster but she said she’s not going to play. they start practice next week.

  13. Cindy Luis January 9, 2017 5:46 pm

    10. liked Frank as well but he was being moved from MB to OH and was pretty far down the depth chart. still in school, probably going to still work out with redshirts when team is on the road Wade said.

  14. Cindy Luis January 9, 2017 5:49 pm

    10. don’t see Kiraly taking the Stanford job. what works for him and Speraw is the proximity to the training center in Anaheim. It will be interesting to see who ends up at Stanford.

  15. warriorfan January 9, 2017 5:54 pm

    Glad Annie is playing beach.
I think Annie has great potential at beach, we needed a big with the loss of Nikki.

  16. warriorfan January 9, 2017 6:11 pm

Darn allison Martinez verballed to Long Beach State I was hoping UH could get her in 2018, no idea why she picked Gimmilaro and Long Beach, She was a youth national team member.

  17. Cindy Luis January 9, 2017 6:11 pm

    16. she played beach at IVC and was pretty good at it.

  18. warriorfan January 9, 2017 6:15 pm

I thought Sibley was considering playing beach also.

  19. Kahuna January 9, 2017 6:27 pm

#17….maybe she got spooked by UH getting Trinity Castaneda. I think we got the better one. I like Trinity’s physical tools. 6-1 and touches 10-3. That’s pretty good for a high schooler.

  20. warriorfan January 9, 2017 7:19 pm

    20. there’s room for both, we still need a pin hitter in that class, we are set at middles and setter.
Maybe she will change her mind signing day isn’t until November
how much would long Beach fans hate UH if UH steals their top recruit though LOL

I know alot depends on chemistry but I’d love to see these pairs for the sand bows this year.
    1. Mags/Tucker
    2. Martin/Smith
    3. Ozee/Shucht
    4. Kan/Mitchem
    5. Rooks/Homayun

  21. Eric96822 January 9, 2017 11:52 pm

#4 … Chill out, I was just kidding. Anyway, here’s how much I know about Stanford volleyball … Colleen Miniuk transferred to Michigan.

  22. T103 January 10, 2017 5:48 am

Awwww bummed about Frank, always rooting for local youth wen they choose to stay home. I Wish him the best. I wonder if Bunn would play indoors? Excited for this season for mens.

  23. T103 January 10, 2017 5:51 am

Ohhhh AND I’m surprised about Liva, I was asking a while ago about him, b/c I knew he played for Mililani/HBA back in h.s. and was puzzled that he was on the football team b/c I thought he was gonna play UH vball the whole time. Anyway, hopefully he does good and can contribute. Can Liva start practicing right away and possibly play if needed?

  24. haleiwacrossfitter January 10, 2017 6:46 am

#10. Hugh’s wife’s family is in Minnesota. That was the main reason he chose to coach there. I don’t think he will go to Stanford. But I’m sure they will try to convince him to. He may, but doubt it. I think he’s cemented at Minnesota.

And I hope no one touches dan fisher either. Would like to see him at UH when the time comes.

  25. Cindy Luis January 10, 2017 5:38 pm

    25. if you remember McCutcheon originally took the UCLA then backed out to go to Minnesota where wife Wiz is from. Part of it was her wanting to be closer to family after her dad was killed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

  26. haleiwacrossfitter January 11, 2017 12:29 am

#26. Of course I remember, that was such a tragedy during the 2012 games. Still hard to believe that happened.

Who knows, maybe time has healed Wiz and family and they may consider the move to Palo Alto. I’m not convinced that’s the case, but there is always a possibility that it happens.

Other than Karch, MAYBE Salina Davidson or Eric Sullivan, who are the top assistants in the country who could make the move without head coaching experience, I don’t know who else Stanford would really go after other than Hugh. So who knows. This is going to be interesting to see how this plays out and the ripple effect it has on the entire landscape of college volleyball coaches.

  27. haleiwacrossfitter January 11, 2017 12:33 am

    Sorry, meant Salima Rockwell.

  28. Warriorfan January 11, 2017 3:12 am

So according to an interview posted at the official warrior volleyball instagram Tui is calling himself a junior, guess he lost a year of eligibility ,darn was hoping he would be a sophomore.

  29. oxtail01 January 11, 2017 9:08 am

Hoping for transfers to UH from Stanford? Keep on dreaming. They won the national championship with a bunch of freshmen, well on their way to more championships. Why would they transfer here when the program is in decline with an old head coach who will most likely also retire (if not, he SHOULD), who’s glory days were decades ago? Are some of you actual fans or just blind?

  30. Kahuna January 11, 2017 10:20 am

#29…….UH need to look into that subject. Tui graduated 2014. Same as Jahlani Tavai, Donyeh Patterson and other redshirt sophomores on the football team. Tui should be a redshirt sophomore this year….unless Tui himself do not want to stay another extra year in college and declared himself a JR. Some football players are redshirt sophomores even though they graduated a year ahead of Tui. Those are probably greyshirts so I dunno.

Another reason maybe that Tui, UH or USC never officially put in a request for redshirt and the year he sat out counted as a “used” year and is lost. UH can always petition the NCAA for the year back so we will have to wait and see what happened or will happen.

  31. Kahuna January 11, 2017 10:24 am

Also graduated in 2014 and are currently redshirt sophomores are basketball players Zach Buscher and Brocke Stepteau.

  32. oxtail01 January 11, 2017 12:47 pm

While top programs like Stanford makes a smooth transition to a new era, probably a dominant one, UH Wahine volleyball program muddles through uncertainty with unsettled situations in coaching and recruiting that may mark the beginning of a sad decline. All the while the happy fanbase continues in their “see no evil, hear no evil… no worry, be happy” mentality. Yeah, go ahead and engage in all the “what if…this player, that player banter” while the dynasty collapses.

  33. Andrew January 11, 2017 2:26 pm

Stanford has basically been under Dunning for the past 16 years. There’s no telling how Stanford will be going forward. Sure they will attract recruits, but the performance of those recruits will depend a lot upon the coach that is leading them. With Dunning leaving it’s also uncertain what their current players will do. Who knows, maybe they may not gel well with the incoming coach or maybe they went to Stanford for Coach Dunning and now that he’s gone, maybe they’ll transfer.

  34. tongo January 11, 2017 3:48 pm

It is a time of transition but “collapsing” it is not. And no, most fans are not blind to the growing trend that tilts top recruits to the Power 5 conference. UH is only one of three mid-majors that have remain a top 20 program since the advent of the Power 5 influence. It is trend that influence all sports including volleyball. As long as fans continue to be passionate about the wahines, players like Nikki will stay home instead of going to Nebraska, or Annie, a top 15 player in HS, will come from Texas.

  35. tongo January 11, 2017 4:13 pm

I have been to the farm to watch the Cardinals play with Dunning coaching. And I would much prefer to watch the wahines play at the Stan Sheriff instead. IMO, there is no comparison when it comes to the passion, excitement, and support for the home team. Total 2016 attendance for Stanford was 39,000 while wahine had 128,000. Which program do you think is more likely to collapse? Probably neither but each team faces uncertainty with coaches retiring.

  36. Cindy Luis January 11, 2017 6:33 pm

    new thread up for Wed.
29/ as for ‘official’ Tuileta is a junior because it’s his third year in college.
he should not have lost a year of eligibility when sitting out. if nothing else he has a redshirt year which means he is a sophomore this season.

  37. oxtail01 January 11, 2017 8:38 pm

34 and 35, no one argues against the great program built here and the best fans in the country. What should be argued is that “greatness” isn’t forever and the position Dunning has left Stanford leaves little doubt that they’ll excel no matter who replaces him. Same cannot be said about the situation here and anyone who says otherwise is blind.

  38. chink January 12, 2017 12:53 pm

Didn’t realize until now, but what happened to Lara Schrieber?
