Game Day: UH vs. Colorado

The Rainbow Warriors and Colorado meet in today’s consolation round.

It is a surprising position for the Buffaloes, who were were considered a favorite to reach the championship game. But Indiana State, and electrifying point guard Jordan Barnes, proved to be too good. The Sycamores defeated UNLV today to reach the title game.

The ‘Bows went with a taller lineup in the opener. It will be interesting to see if guard Brocke Stepteau, who started the first 10 before coming off the bench yesterday, will return to the staring lineup.

Too much subbing. Players playing scared on eggshells afraid of making mistakes and getting subbed out.

Didn’t realize USC (yeah “THAT USC and not talking South Carolina”) won TWO of these Diamond Head Classics. Heh. The first one and the most previous one.

This team is afraid to foul hard. Foul to prevent the shot being attempted. You can foul hard without being dirty about it.

  8. cappie the dog December 23, 2018 3:59 pm

This feels exactly like the Wichita State game. Colorado has similar colored uniforms.

  9. cappie the dog December 23, 2018 4:03 pm

Yup. The Shockers game went into overtime, too. Call a damn timeout.

Quick flashback to Bobby Nash vs oral Roberts. Good look. Couldn’t convert.

  11. H-Man December 23, 2018 4:04 pm

Buggs almost made the follow shot for the win. I liked that play with Stepteau driving the basket and passing back. So tied and on to OT.

  12. shoots December 23, 2018 4:04 pm

Yeah, why not call a timeout?

  13. cappie the dog December 23, 2018 4:06 pm

Don’t put Stepteau in a corner.

Glad to see the team overcome its shooting woes to pull out the win at the end. All things considered a much better performance than the opening round debacle against UNLV.

This is my observation about our big men.

They miss a lot of easy shots.

But at least they’re in position to miss the easy shots.

Anybody who follows UH basketball annually knows that we had big men who didn’t even know HOW to get into position, let alone miss an easy shot.

I’m not discouraged by the point blank range missed shots.

    They’re freshmen.

    Muscle memory.

  19. cappie the dog December 23, 2018 6:02 pm

I sat behind a guy who was keeping score.

    Who does that?

He and his buddy, both under thirty, were shouting so much, but they were shouting smart things.

Not hecklers trying to draw laughter.

The live experience is enhanced by the people you sit with.

The guy not keeping score agreed with me that they should have called a timeout.

But then again, this team aren’t geniuses at running set plays.

The trademark Hawaii offensive possession is Drew Buggs dribbling a lot.

Prior post 129…. You can have a Div I athletic program without football. Examples are the Big West schools other than UH like UC Irvine, LBSU, Fullerton, UCSB, etc.
UCI has more men’s sports 9 to UH’s 7, but less women’s sports, 9 vs 12 for UH. UH also has 2 coed sports. UCI has men’s soccer and track and field.
And it would take less upper campus and state funding to run such a program. UCI required $10.6 million of that type of support in FY 2017 while UH required $19 million. Though UCI received about $4.7 in student fees and UH about $1.5 million.

  24. suckkabooya December 24, 2018 1:33 am

This is what I hope the running backs work off season…..

Holly has to spend a month just taking pass blocking reps. Once he gains some confidence in his abilities as a blocker he can keep the defense honest (in RnS) and find his niche like Furuta has.

Speaking of Furuta, I hope he can put on 8 to 12 more pounds and become a hybrid fullback/H/tailback. He usually has to be ankle tackled because of his dimensional build. But he is often times “trip-able” because his speed/balance ratio doesn’t really punish the hand that trips him. A heavier, more powerful but slower (deliberate) Furuta will have the better balance to punish and wear down LB’s. And wear down pass rushing DE’s too (he pancaked Ferguson on a chip) using power.

Miles Reed going to have to work on cut blocking. He can learn this with a week of reps. Should be easy for him, his shoulder’s already there. Just gotta work on technique. Got to utilize his jump cut somehow too, special..

  25. cappie the dog December 24, 2018 6:29 am

I worry about baseball getting the axe.

Mike Trapasso needs to get his team to the post-season.

I hate how the Big West doesn’t have a conference tournament.

    Who are they? The Ivy?

Even the Ivy has a conference tournament, for basketball, anyways.

  26. Whats up December 24, 2018 7:07 am

I think Rolo needs to realize that we the Hawaii fans want him to succeed and he has most of the Hawaii fan support. But he has to make the tough decision and hire an Offensive Coordinator or another coach or a consultant that can move the Hawaii Offense forward. I understand that Brian Smith and Stutz bleed Hawaii green… However Rolo, you need give yourself, Smith and Stutz that chance to learn from someone else.

We all can see the Offense has gotten stale and predictable, teams have figured out the Hawaii RNS/RPO offense. With the current offense coaching staff have reached a level of predictability and Rolo you need to bring in expert consultation like Mouse Davis to work with the Wide Receivers.

Then, if possible get one of those Eastern Washington coaches from the offensive side of the ball that can add something to Hawaii offense. Eastern Washington offensive schemes could take advantage of Cole McDonald and Chevan Cordero mobility and while still airing it out.

Hawaii has multiple QB’s on the roster that can start and we are blessed to have that. But the Hawaii RPO and RnS are not enough… bring in an Eastern Washington coach on offense to add a new dimension to the Hawaii Offense.

  27. Old School Dave December 24, 2018 8:51 am

The sun came up the next day!

IMHO, I think that LA Tech’s defense had something to do with UH’s non production on offense. If you don’t have the players to execute, it doesn’t matter who’s drawing up the Xs & Os. LA Tech has talented players who were physically superior, especially that #85 on the D-line (everyone was focusing on #45) who raised havoc. LA Tech has also won their last 4 bowl games. UH got sucked into the mind games from the mouthy LA Tech, but it worked (140 yards in penalties). Valuable lessons learned.

Still, UH going 8-6 is impressive progress, when everyone here was predicting a 3-10 season. Hope the staff can improve the performance of the O-line (2 true freshmen starters), RBs, and defensive interior linemen (very hard to sign). I was impressed by the play of Kendal Hune, Blessman Taala, & Samiuela Akoteu in the interior (all returning in 2019).

Next, the hiring of an effective Strength & Conditioning Coach, along with extending Rolo’s contract and raises for his assistants.

  28. burro sabio December 24, 2018 9:04 am

#25 – nah that baseball stadium is the best investment for UH ever. And on the bright side, if they get rid of baseball then there’s plenty of room for an on-campus football stadium.

  29. Kev-1 December 24, 2018 9:34 am

I’d take Colina over Raimo. Coli a needs reps to become better and learn. Zigmar plays too small for a big.

  30. burro sabio December 24, 2018 10:32 am

Kev-1, what, 17 rebounds not good enough? High standards, haha!

  31. NorthShoreFan December 24, 2018 11:00 am

IMHO….Warrior need to study film on what LaTech did to us defensively. We’ll definitely be facing the same type of defense next year. Like after the Army game, defenses took a page from that game and we were not able to counter much.
Looking for a competitive season net year. Some good games on tap.

  32. cappie the dog December 24, 2018 11:16 am

Hawaii will improve when the newcomers challenge the veterans for playing time. Colina, Hullard, and Carper are all green, but I can see an upside that previous seven-foot bigs lacked. I used to clap when a center caught the ball, or received the ball and didn’t move his pivot foot. They were not D1 players. I can name four but I won’t. It is unseemly to ridicule amateur athletes. Eran Ganot, I presume, recruited at St. Mary’s. He must have some ability at talent evaluation.

You have to respect Zigmars Raimo. This guy worked his butt off. He is what Tony Akpan accomplished in one season, in regard to playing time. The guy was a quick learner. Benchwarmer to reliable backup for Haim Shimonovich, all accomplished during his freshman year. I sound like a broken record. He was gone by the time Hawaii played Xavier in the NCAAs. I think his absence was the difference between a win and a loss. He obviously brought physicality. A bigger and stronger Vincent Smalls. It, perhaps, started a chain reaction. You never know. If Hawaii went deeper into the tournament, maybe Carl English’s draft chances would have increased, or rather, be induced into sticking around for his last year of eligibility.

But back to Raimo. 17 rebounds. My timeline puts him in the company of Tony Maroney, the guy with zero vertical and would just stand there and through telekinesis, the ball would drop into his hands like magic. The guy was an unmovable edifice.

    Go Bows.

  35. islandman December 24, 2018 12:14 pm

17 rebounds tied the tournament record.
Ziggy is #2 in the Big West for FG PCT at 56.7 % and Buggs is #4.
Raimo is #3 in rebounds per game, 7.2 and Buggs is #1 in Assists per game, 5.3.

  36. 808bowler December 24, 2018 2:32 pm

Honestly we either stick to the Rns or rpo offense. These 2 don’t mix.

Defense needs more speed and bigger linemen. Lb are good enough. More speed for our secondary.

  37. cappie the dog December 24, 2018 3:09 pm

    islandman-

    I have a question.

If Hawaii’s attendance remains at a median average of, say, twenty to twenty-five thousand for the next five to ten years, does this jeopardize the football program as a FBS entity, or other sports subordinate to football?

And what sport do you think would be first on the chopping block?

    Wait, that’s two questions.

  38. islandman December 24, 2018 4:50 pm

    37. They don’t provide or haven’t seen the financial statements for the athletic department broken down by each sport, so i don’t know.
They should provide that for the public.
As a whole, for FY 2017 Operating Revenues, Rights & Licensing was $12.4 million, contributions $4.2 million, ticket sales $5.8 million, student fees $1.5 million, university and state support $19 million, other $ 4.8 million. Total of $47.7 million.
    —————————————————————————————–
Cappie, on another note, UH is 2nd of the teams in the Big West in the basketball NET rankings at 150. 1st is UC Irvine at 97.

  39. SteveM December 24, 2018 5:38 pm

I am also optimistic for next football season as the young UH roster gets more playing time.

It’s been 10 years since the Sugar Bowl, but LA Tech reminded me of how Georgia handled UH back then. They were the only team to stuff Hawaii’s Run n’ Shoot an no doubt LA Tech studied that. So has/will everyone else from now.

But I was impressed with UH’s defense…possibly the best since the Glanville/McMackin years. If Batoon gets a few more “draft choices” (ala Glanville), it could be very interesting.

Fight PC, folks. PC simply is not normal. That person or persons who lodged a complain would hope that I wasn’t coach at the time of that situation. I would have calle in every legal favor. Would’ve spent every reasonable dime to fight it.

  43. burro sabio December 24, 2018 11:05 pm

#38 – the financial statements should have separate columns for baseball and men’s volleyball, then all non-revenue sports together.
#37 – men’s golf, tennis, and swimming have 4.5 scholarships each so that’s equal. Then it’s a matter of coach’s salaries, roster size, and travel.

    Got to endow scholarships.

I just have this image of Mr. Tsai being the ONLY one listening to a talkative relative (oh come on, now. We all have at least one) at the obligatory family Christmas Eve suddenly getting an alert on his phone, putting proverbial index ginger up between his face and said talkative relative, proceeding to speed dial someone and atart taling into said phone, and walking away from now silent talkative relative. islandman: What worries me more about the performance of the football team is attendance. Hawaii is 2-0 coming into their game against Nevada. They have a chance to stay in first place for one more week, stave off the inevitable, because everybody could see by then that Fresno State was Jim Sweeney-good. And they can’t even get 25,000 people in the stadium.

And then the wheels came off…for awhile.

But it doesn’t seem to make a difference if they’re winning or losing.

The attendance was 30,911 for the bowl game, but it didn’t look that way on television. That must be tickets sold. I wonder what the actual gate was?

I keep returning to this point. The program lost a generation of fans because they went to pay-per-view. The same-day telecast on K5 was absolutely key to breeding future fans.
