Big West basketball: Hawaii vs. UC Riverside

UC Riverside spoiled Hawaii’s Senior Night with a 49-43 victory in the Stan Sheriff Center.

The ‘Bows took a 40-39 lead with 4:38 to play when Eddie Stansberry hit three free throws.

But the Highlanders scored 10 of the next 13 points to win going away.

The Highlanders improved to 16-15 and 6-9 in the Big West. The ‘Bows fell to 16-12 and 7-7.

After 20 minutes, it’s all tied at 24. Thoughts:

> As expected, the Highlanders are playing a deliberate-paced, inside-outside game. It begins with 7-1, 276-pound Callum McRae setting up in the post, and then back-back-back toward the basket or kicking out to a perimeter shooter.

> Zigmars Raimo, one of UH’s two seniors on Senior Night, has eight first-half points and has held McRae to a jump hook and twisting layup.

> Best sequence: UH guard Eddie Stansberry hits a 3 to tie it at 24, then races downcourt to absorb a charging foul on McRae.

Excelling at both ends, Zigmars Raimo has a game-high eight points at the 6:23 mark of the first half while limiting 7-1, 276-pound Callum McRae to a jump hook. UH leads 19-16.

For a game matching two of the most prolific 3-point-shooting teams, there has only been one successful 3 in the first 8:01 — Dikymbe Martin‘s, which put Riverside ahead, 9-8.

* * * * *

It’s a strong start for Zigmars Raimo, who has scored four points as the ‘Bows have taken a 6-2 lead at the first media timeout. Raimo also has held Callum McRae, Riverside’s 7-1 post, in check.

It’s senior night as guard Eddie Stansberry and post Zigmars Raimo play their final regular-season game in the Stan Sheriff Center.

Tonight also marks the return of Carl English, who led the ‘Bows to the NCAA Tournament in 2001 and 2002. English’s teammates — Phil Martin and Ryne Holliday — also are in the house.

Going to a smaller lineup makes sense if you have a transition game. Does Hawaii have a transition game? If your big men aren’t in the game, run.

I have season tickets and i haven’t gone to a game in over a month. And i don’t miss it. This team is depressing. Ganot should have been gone a long time ago. But I know some fans will say ” wait till next year”. If Matlin says he’s our coach again I’m certainly not renewing. Been a season ticket guy since the 70’s. Oh well can always watch on tv for free if things get better. Last night the men’s volleyball team drew 3500 for a exhibition. And it was worth it. A very enjoyable volleyball game. I continue to believe Hawaii can be a great program again. But not under this clown.

Mind blown. Brandon Ross had the bases loaded with one out, and escaped unscathed: K and fly-out. It’s early. But holding an early lead was not what I expected. Legit? Not a fluke? Like our leader likes to say: “Let’s see what happens.” Yesterday’s win felt like a hoax. I thought Hawaii’s chances of winning a game was 0%. But to take the series? Quoting eighties new-wavers The Fixx: “Less Than Zero”.

The coach is pulling out all the stops. Yanks the starter in the fourth. More great relief pitching, this time by Halemanu.

Vanderbilt came into the series with a sub-1.50 ERA. Once Hawaii surrendered the lead and tie, they weren’t supposed to rally. Who is this team?

First and third; one out. Wu-Yella d gets them out of the inning. This team is on a mission.

Wow. Hawaii got Vanderbilt to bunt to get on base.

Way to go, coach. Playing to win, even though your runner got caught stealing second.

Through nine. I think Hawaii just earned themselves a slot in the Collegiate Baseball poll, even if they lose. Hit batter, error, but nothing can rattle Wu. He is locked in.

Oh man…Hawaii had guys on 3rd and 2nd base. But bad at bats from a fielder’s choice to pitcher and a bad bunt result in two outs and after a bases loaded situation, they come up empty on a strikeout.

If we lose the extra innings to Vanderbilt, this will surely be the one inning Trap’s not going to sleep on, especially once they go back to Hawaii after this.

Good news, Reilly got a 1-2-3 10th inning, and this game is still on. Top of the 11th with the first 3 of the batting order, here we come!

Ai eee soos. Thank you for your recruiting update. I like the idea of Coach Graham and his staff not being afraid to recruit against any school. Great mentality. I don’t think there will be much of a problem, but will be an upgrade from previos recruiting thoughts. Recruiting against the Piwer 5 is challenging, but if UH wants to upgrade, then this is a start. Go gettum Warriors

Trepasso second guessing himself ???? Thot he was a pitcher back in the day. Should be 10-3 with history making 2 out of 3 against national champ. Ai Yai !!!! Bonehead

I think the second half against Georgia Tech was worse than against Riverside. I never seen anything that bad before. Was pretty bad vs Riverside too. Weird lack of trust. They did manage to adjust after the Tech game so maybe Ganot can tweak something come tournament time. Stansberry and Buggs seem to be worn down some. Maybe Ganot needs to adjust the roles and simplify some things offensively. Let them make plays (Raimo has to lead and play better, they will win easily when/if he does). Just play. The defense is pretty solid. Can do I think.

McKenzie back to practice! Amazing and hoping for a good recovery. So Gabriel vs McKenzie in spring ball?

Both Missouri-Kansas City and Chicago State forfeited games at Seattle U. That is scary. If I’m not mistaken, UC-Davis is located in Northern California.
