Game Day: Hawaii Bowl

The Warriors end the season with 31-14 loss to Louisiana Tech in the SoFi Hawaii Bowl.

The Bulldogs amassed nine sacks, including 2.5 by Jaylon Ferguson. Ferguson set the NCAA record for career sacks.

* * * * *

Kam McKnight goes 39 yards for the TD to extend LA Tech’s lead to 31-14 with 3:45 to play.

* * * * *

Cole McDonald throws a 7-yard scoring pass to Marcus Armstrong-Brown to close UH to 24-14 with 6:14 to play.

The Warriors had gained possession when Scheyenne Sanitoa blocked a punt that Eugene Ford fielded.

* * * * *

J’Mar Smith goes 4 yards on the keeper to make it 24-7 with 55 seconds left in the third quarter.

* * * * *

The Bulldogs extend their lead to 17-7 on a screen pass to Jaqwis Dancy that turned into a 58-yard touchdown. That play capped a 92-yard drive that would have been abbreviated if not for quarterback J’Mar’s 25-yard scramble on third-and-13.

* * * * *

Israel Tucker goes 5 yards up the gut for a TD to give LA Tech a 10-3 lead with 10:27 left in the first quarter.

The big play was J’Mar Smith’s 41-yard pass to Teddy Veal and the ensuing 5-yard penalty for a face-mask grab.

* * * * *

In UH’s first drive of the second half, Chevan Cordeiro and Cole McDonald trade turns at quarterback. The drive ends when Jordan Baldwin intercepts Cordeiro.

* * * * *

It’s 7-3 at the intermission. Of note:

> It’s getting chirpy with a lot of penalties. One of the penalties denied LA Tech’s Jaylon Ferguson of setting the NCAA career record for sacks. He needed just a half sack, and it appeared to get it when he tackled quarterback Chevan Cordeiro. But Ferguson was penalized, and the play was negate, giving Terrell Suggs the record — at least for another half.

> UH has 121 yards in total offense, 75 in penalties.

> UH has three takeaways, with two involving Kendall Hune. Hune has a fumble recovery and interception

* * * * *

It’s getting sloppy. Hawaii assessed three 15-yard penalties on this drive, including two on freshman right guard Solo Vaipulu.

* * * * *

Kendal Hune, the last signee of UH’s 2018 recruiting class, bats J’Mar Smith’s into the air then makes a diving interception. Hune now has a pick and a fumble recover.

* * * * *

On a play action, Chevan Cordeiro connected on a 24-yard scoring pass to Jason-Matthew Sharsh to give the Warriors a 7-3 lead with 8:20 left in the first half.

Cordeiro was filling in for Cole McDonald. Sharsh, who caught his first scoring pass, started in place of injured John Ursua.

* * * * *

LA Tech was nearing the red zone on a pass fro J’Mar Smith to Adrian Hardy. But UH cornerback Rojesterman Farris stripped away the football and defensive tackle Kendall Hune recovered. UH’s ball at its 29 with 11:41 left in the first half.

* * * * *

Louisiana Tech leads 3-0 after one quarter. Here’s what happened:

> UH slotback John Ursua did not play because of an apparent hamstring injury.

> After three ineffective drives, Cole McDonald was replaced at quarterback by Chevan Cordeiro. Cordeiro’s first possession resulted in minus-5 yards.

> LA Tech’s Jaylon Ferguson sacked Cordeiro, giving him 43.5 for his career. He is a half-sack short of tying Terrell Suggs’ NCAA record.

> Bailey Hale kicked a 24-yard FG for the quarter’s only points.

* * * * *

John Ursua will not play today because of an apparent hamstring injury. He did not practice on Wednesday and Thursday.

* * * * *

All the stars are out today.

For the SoFi Hawaii Bowl, Willie K sang the national anthem.

And then Kimie Miner followed with sparkling rendition of “Hawaii Pono‘i.”

And then Max Holloway was announced as UH’s captain.

By the way, the Warriors are the visiting team today.

    And yes. Please, updates.

1420AM Bobby Curran calls attending the UH basketball portion of the Diamond Head Classic™️ and The SoFi Hawaii Bowl™️ “doing the double.”

Looks I will only be doing the one 🤗

    Mr. Grease:
Which event will you be picking?

  6. Chicken Grease December 22, 2018 8:51 am

Ah a few of us pals are goin’ to da Diamond Head Classic™️

Will watch the SoFi Hawaii Bowl™️ at a Christmas party in East Oahu (see what I did there? A Grease is already IN the East Oahu vicinity being at the Classic™️ and will attend a Christmas party I haveta go to anyway. We WILL have the HAW/La. Tech matchup on the flat screen, though, of course).

Gotta wonder about some of these sponsors. Is SoFi sponsering today’s bowl due to high debt in Hawaii? 🤗🎄

Have great fun doin’ th’ double today, Mr. Tsai! You will do a great job, as usual, you who is basically the ONLY person confident that the Warriors would qualify for the SoFi Hawaii Bowl™️ wherher they beat SDSU or not. Well done, Mister!

It’s all fun and games until moke karma involves itself, and den bumbye, someone staying crying in their moms basement….

  8. Stephen Tsai December 22, 2018 8:57 am

Don’t know much about SoFi, but I do like the idea that some young people with some extra money decided, let’s put our company name on a bowl game.
    Me?
I’d probably have Cardi B be at our company Christmas party.
Btu a bowl sponsorship is fun, too.

  9. Stephen Tsai December 22, 2018 8:59 am

    Boolakanaka
    Agree.
Although, it’s better to stick the adult kid in the basement than to become Arthur Spooner. (OK, everyone has 20 seconds to Google that reference.)

  11. Andrew December 22, 2018 9:05 am

Doing the double sounds great but after attending the Diamond Head classic, I’d imagine by the time the game finishes and head over to the stadium, parking and traffic would be a crap show already

  12. Warrior Lifer December 22, 2018 9:07 am

Will be attending both the DHC game and the Sofi UH bowl game. Very excited for both, as it will be my first opportunity to see both teams live. Have been watching both teams from my phone and laptop all season so far, so hopefully both teams are able to pull out “W”s today for the state. Exciting day of sports ahead, go bows!

Indiana State is upsetting Colorado, 46-34, with 15:52 left in the second half.
    Hawaii’s got next.

  20. A-House December 22, 2018 11:11 am

interesting happening in a bowl game this morning — Memphis scores a TD — Wake forest, on 2nd play, goes for 49 yd pass play with the RT holding the arm of the charging DE who can’t get to the QB — no flag — next play, a pass to the 1 yard line — Wake Forest runs up the middle and is stuffed — then, the refs decide to allow a review of the previous play which they, again, agree the WR touched the pylon with his right hand, but the ball was out of bounds

dah, what am I missing — you can run a play and then go back to review the previous play and again rule no TD? I thought once you run another play the previous play cannot be reviewed — rule different for a “bowl” game???????????

  21. Chicken Grease December 22, 2018 11:13 am

Mr. Tsai—saw Artie Wilson 6 rows up from where broadcasts are done. He had on a gold chain that (as he late Don Rickles would say) “was signaling ships.”

    Right now:
    Colorado 34
    Indiana St. 48

  22. Stephen Tsai December 22, 2018 11:21 am

    Mr. Grease
Artie is wearing his “play” clothes.
    I don’t think he owns any sweat-stained T-shirts.

  23. Chicken Grease December 22, 2018 11:46 am

Oh yes, heh, Artie was wearing some casual grey-ish shirt and I did not see his pants. That gold chain around his neck, though. Absolutely fab.

  29. H-Man December 22, 2018 1:56 pm

Bows just like Wahine, cannot make free throws and have lapses in the 2nd half. UNLV on 17-1 run. But there’s 8 min left, so maybe the Bows can make their own run. Not holding my breath. Everything falling for the Rebels. And really hoping the Warriors stayed focused and don’t fall flat against La Tech this afternoon. With an expected crowd of 35K+, now’s the opportunity to re-build the fan base.

  30. seewhy December 22, 2018 2:24 pm

Wow, basketball game was pathetic to say the least. I’ve never seen so many blown layups. It was like watching a youth basketball game. Terrible.

  31. HawaiiMongoose December 22, 2018 3:01 pm

I’ve watched a lot of UH hoops over the past 45 years. Especially over the past 25 I’ve hardly missed a game. And it’s not often that I’ve seen a UH team underperform as badly as this year’s edition did today.

It looked to me like the players didn’t come out mentally prepared to compete. They played scared for the first ten minutes, and after fighting their way back into the game their second half collapse was disheartening. Sure UNLV had more atleticism but that shouldn’t prevent UH from executing fundamentals that are within our players’ capabilities.

We boxed out poorly and gave UNLV second, third, fourth, and in one sequence a sixth opportunity to score. Our best jump shooters couldn’t convert a slew of open three ball attempts. Inside we failed to convert multiple bunnies. And the free throw shooting wasn’t even up to high school standards. Only Buggs and Colina looked like they came to play and even then Drew was off from the line.

I don’t know what Eran can do to turn the tide but he’d better figure out something or this year will be a losing season for UH in the Big West.

  32. J-FORCE December 22, 2018 3:12 pm

    Lets Go Bows!!
Not a good start, Lets Go Warriors
    You can do it!!

  33. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 4:08 pm

mr. a house: Why the heck did Wake Forest squib kick? Almost cost them the game.

  34. NotNasti December 22, 2018 4:14 pm

Went to the BB game. No traffic and at 4:10 pm. Lots of parking.

  35. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 4:14 pm

If I was Brocke Stepteau, this is what I would be thinking: I paid my own way for three seasons and you’re benching me because I’m undersized? If my teammates knew how to set screens, I’ll get the job done from long distance.

Clearly, Stepteau was a little rattled. He was a 88% free throw shooter coming into the game and I’m pretty sure he never missed three in a row.

I expect a better effort against Colorado. The team is now adjusted to facing superior size and speed. What did the coach expect after scheduling Hawaii-Hilo and Mississippi Valley State? Of course, they were going to lose this game.

They beat Utah on a neutral court.

They’re better than what we saw today.

  36. NotNasti December 22, 2018 4:15 pm

    @Aloha Stadium

  37. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 4:19 pm

mr. burro sabio: I can’t use an acronym with your user name because it would sound like I’m trolling you. Baseball needs to go back to the composite bats to generate more offense. Just make the pitcher wear a helmet. There is no next generation of Rainbow fans. Parents, when they bring their kids to the game, are not paying attention. They are running all over the creation, or they’re glued to their phones. Even the youth baseball teams that come to the games aren’t paying attention to the action on the field.

  38. seewhy December 22, 2018 5:57 pm

Still trying to run the ball with Holly. 😂

  39. suckkabooya December 22, 2018 6:07 pm

kinda lost without Ursua right now. Like last year for Brown. A little early yet.

  40. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 6:11 pm

Does Cordero still get to redshirt?

  41. seewhy December 22, 2018 6:13 pm

Yes, this will be his 4th game out of 4 possible games to play.

  42. Warrior Dave December 22, 2018 6:14 pm

UH offense is struggling big time.

  43. seewhy December 22, 2018 6:14 pm

  44. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 6:19 pm

It’s not McDonald’s fault that the RB dropped the ball on the handoff and his offensive lineman moved.

    Great.

There will be two warring factions next season.

    On the team, and online.

  45. Boolakanaka December 22, 2018 6:20 pm

A redshirt can play in any four games and preserve their eligibility.

  46. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 6:26 pm

    Thanks. 45 & 43.

The sideline should at least pretend that the receiver’s foot was out of bounds.

    Sell it.

    Don’t just stand there.

  47. winning December 22, 2018 6:26 pm

  50. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 6:37 pm

I am so confused about who Hawaii’s QB should be.

If the receiver holds onto the ball and they have it at the one, first and goal? Do you take McDonald out?

  51. Inyoface December 22, 2018 6:38 pm

    Cordeiro is a touchdown machine.

You’re third in voting for team MVP, but c’mon.

    I wish I recorded it.

  59. suckkabooya December 22, 2018 6:55 pm

Looks like the 2017 Mautautia. Nice and healthy

  60. suckkabooya December 22, 2018 6:58 pm

F’ken Awesome. Defensive Preview for next year. Batoon’s scheme. Aggressive ball hawking.

  61. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 7:04 pm

I’m okay with the off-setting penalties.

You want to support your quarterback.

    This team has Cordeiro’s back.

  62. Inyoface December 22, 2018 7:07 pm

    1st and 40!

  63. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 7:09 pm

The La Tech defender missed the ball carrier’s head, but the intent was there.

  64. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 7:15 pm

Minority report: I think Cole McDonald should start the second half. If he doesn’t move the team, then bring in Cordeiro. The freshman got knocked around a bit on that second-to-last possession.

  65. Bogeywarrior December 22, 2018 7:31 pm

It’s not Cordero, the offensive line has to block better. LAT blitzing 6-7 guys. Stop making stupid penalties OL!

  66. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 7:40 pm

No. You misunderstand me. I want Cordeiro to stave off a serious injury.

  67. Inyoface December 22, 2018 7:44 pm

    Put in Moussa

  68. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 7:48 pm

    Right there.

The tackle McDonald endured which made him shy of the first down is a hit that Cordeiro would have felt the impact more.

At some point, the Bulldogs are going to pick up a personal foul or two.

There is bad blood on the field.

I guess his built reminds me of Mackenzie Milton, and it still makes me sick to my stomach that his career may be in jeopardy.

  69. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 8:10 pm

If you’re two possessions down, I think you need to run the kick back.

    Your offense is struggling.

    You need a shorter field.

  70. suckkabooya December 22, 2018 8:10 pm

Furuta gotta be the RB if they want to pass

  71. Inyoface December 22, 2018 8:19 pm

    We’re missing Ursua big time.

  72. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 8:20 pm

I think Beth Mowins was one of the announcers who called the Hawaii/Alabama games at the Super-Regional.

  73. HawaiiMongoose December 22, 2018 8:27 pm

As bad as the basketball game was, this football game has been worse. So many mental errors. So many wasted opportunities. Defensive breakdowns. Turnovers.

All in all a day for UH fans to forget.

  74. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 8:30 pm

The defense did some good things. They just didn’t get enough rest.

  75. suckkabooya December 22, 2018 8:33 pm

Batoon’s 3rd quarter rotational adjustments killed them, especially in the middle. The 25 yard first down swung momentum and UH is struggling to recover. Overmatched without Ursua but still get chance. Got to tough it out. RJ Hollis called it. He could see this coming as far as protection.

  76. suckkabooya December 22, 2018 8:41 pm

Maybe put in Moussa? Need the long ball from the pocket.

  77. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 8:42 pm

    67.

    Now put in Moussa.

    A bridge too far.

Hawaii took one baby step in the right direction this season.

The team has a lot to be proud about.

    Always consider the athletic budget.

Hawaii will always be in the position of overachieving.

  78. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 8:45 pm

    A glimmer of hope.

    Need a quick score.

First play: Go to the end zone.

  79. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 8:48 pm

    A running play?

The OC does realize we’re three possessions down, right?

  80. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 8:49 pm

I hope that was a busted play and the QB had no choice but to run.

  81. seewhy December 22, 2018 8:51 pm

The logic in the play call choices are taking years off my life…

  82. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 8:52 pm

    Way to go, Cole.

    You have haters.

  83. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 8:55 pm

    Onside kick.

It’s early, but go for it.

    Nothing to lose.

  84. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 8:58 pm

In the near future, there will be no special team coaches.

The ball will be automatically placed at the 25-yard line.

    There will be no punting.

Everybody has to play four downs.

For the survival of the game.

  85. suckkabooya December 22, 2018 8:58 pm

Nice kick. Gotta make that play

  86. Chicken Grease December 22, 2018 9:06 pm

    Upsetting.

Other teams invaded UH house today . . .

  87. seewhy December 22, 2018 9:07 pm

  88. cappie the dog December 22, 2018 9:08 pm

  90. Inyoface December 22, 2018 9:12 pm

    Nearly four hours!!!

Kudos to the people who went to the game.

  95. azwarrior22 December 22, 2018 9:29 pm

Hopefully this will leave a very bad taste in the Warriors mouth and be a strong motivator for next season. This game was lost in the trenches. LT defense man-handled the Warriors O-line. Warriors could not sustain any drives because they had no time.

    Here’s my 3 takeaways…
    1. LT defense man-handled the Warriors O-line
    2. Hawaii without its top playmaker on Offense (Ursua) and Defense (Tavai).
    3. Hawaii didn’t capitalize on turnovers.

A good season, but not good enough !!

  96. Honu888 December 22, 2018 9:41 pm

Well 2018 has finally come to an end. It seemed like a very long season. Not the way I wanted it to end but the last two final game of the regular season was still sweet in my mind. Good luck to all the Seniors in their future endeavors! Thank you all for all of your contributions. Sweat, blood, and tears. I wish you all the best going forward. We have had a lot of young talent that has contributed this past year and will only grow and get even better so I think our future looks bright. Work hard on the off season and we’ll see you next year!

    Go Warriors!

  97. A-House December 22, 2018 10:16 pm

defensive coaches took all of 4 games to defend the R ‘n S scheme — rush 3 DL with 4 LBs and 4 DBs — La Tech’s down line made UH OL look really bad rushing 3 with 2 LB blitzing to disrupt OL blocking schemes leaving QB ‘bare’ for a beating — UH OC/HC needs to develop plays to over come this defensive scheme

very unhappy with all the 15 yd penalties by UH — they were “goaded” by LaTech, reacting, and flagged for unsports man like penalties — on the one play where #60 was asses 2 15 yd penalties, none was assessed against #45 for “body slamming” Chevan — yet, earlier, UH was assessed 15 yds for the the same thing — notice how ‘tame’ La Tech was in the 2nd half

    on to 2019!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe we can get Colin Kaepernick next season!

  99. coachdb December 22, 2018 11:09 pm

Seriously we got a lot of work ahead next season lots of pac12 teams on the schedule no D3 lay downs!

  100. suckkabooya December 22, 2018 11:13 pm

The defense was incredible in the first half. Aggressive. Second half was 4 man rush with a lot of “read and react” packages. The D-line did get good push though. Someone just has to make the play is all. It was right there to be made. All game (all season actually). Something to focus on really improving off season. Making the play when it’s right there to make. Just like in the first half tonight. That first half defense is the defense I expect next year. You can see what is possible. So much possibilities. Hopefully the players understand their (collective, as a whole unit) potential. They just need to reach that next level, especially in developing 2 or 3 dependable playmakers. Veteran Coaching. Can do.

    Dear Santa,

I want a new offensive coordinator and defense coordinator.

    Thanks,
    UH Football Fans

  102. suckkabooya December 22, 2018 11:51 pm

Tonight’s offensive problems all had to do with protection. Both quarterbacks couldn’t get comfortable. Good tape for the entire offensive unit (players and staff) to evaluate intensely. If they can figure out how to prepare for and beat that specific (La Tech scheme) type of pressure package (via screen, shovel, “hot read”, draw, max protect) and have an answer for stuff like that, anything else (other blitz schemes) will be easy to make adjustments on . Lucky to get this opportunity, even though they did get “lickens”. Worth it I think, despite the loss. I am positive the O-line will be much better next season. That combined with tonight’s lessons can help make them an “elite” offense moving forward. Just got to protect better for the many playmakers next year. Can do too.

  103. Chicken Grease December 23, 2018 12:21 am

If coaches can contemplate leaving, then WE (as fans) can similarly contemplate suggestion coach(es) leave.

Two way street. You know who tend to be most fond of “two way street” analogies?

    Answer: Coaches. Especially HEAD coaches!

P.S. on a more positive note, someone PLEASE tell me Genta will return next season.

  104. Chicken Grease December 23, 2018 1:14 am

I dunno if I would up with a QB competition if I had a talent like how Cordeiro does. They kept talking about Mililani’s Gabriel going over to Georgia?

Well. Maybe it’s Cordeiro who needs to take that spot.

  105. Markazulu December 23, 2018 4:31 am

This was a good wake up game for any of the boys if they thought we “arrived”

Learn from it because they are still a relatively young team with alot of talent.
We weren’t supposed to win more than 5 games. They proved people wrong all season long. It didn’t end pretty but this years team has me very very optimistic going in to the next year.

    Great year boys.

  106. H-Man December 23, 2018 5:06 am

The one thing I didn’t want, happened. Warriors got embarrassed on national TV, again. Warriors did not come prepared. I blame Rolo and his staff for that. Play calling was suspect. Too many penalties, but it seemed the officiating was slanted against Hawaii. QBs…I don’t know what to say except, in spite of the pass rush, they missed a lot…missed by over throwing…missed by throwing into traffic when they should not have…missed seeing open receivers….just plain out of sync between QB and receivers. Cole especially stared down his primary receiver. Defensive secondary play once again performed very poorly. Sorry Abe, but I think a coaching change is in order.

  107. Whats up December 23, 2018 5:31 am

That was just a poorly disciplined played game by the young men!

All season the Hawaii Football players represented themselves, their Families and Hawaii well. But last night was an undisciplined unsportsmanlike like penalty disaster. 12 penalties for 140 yards! Not many teams can overcome 140 yards in penalties and win.

John Ursua was missed last night but I have to question how prepared the coaches got the team for the Hawaii Bowl… 15 extra practices and they looked out of sync on offense. The Hawaii Defense played almost the whole game with the Offense looking like they didn’t even practice the past few weeks. I think the Offensive coaches didn’t seriously prepare the Hawaii Offense and they got dominated by a well coached and prepared LA Tech team. Which led to QB sacks, O-line frustration and 140 yards of unsportsmanlike penalties.

Yet again, the Hawaii Defense did everything they could to keep Hawaii in the game but they eventually got gassed. I give credit to the Hawaii defense coaching staff and the defense players, they played there okoles off. Good job Hawaii defense!

This young coaching staff and young team learned some valuable lessons and gained tons a game experience this season and last night they showed on Offense that none of it stuck. Both Cole McDonald and Chevan Cordero took a beating by the LA Tech Defense. Hopefully, after this embarrassing performance and okole whipping on National Television at the Hawaii Bowl the Hawaii Offense Coaching staff and players take a look deep at themselves. Because next season it only gets tougher with the murders row of games right from the beginning of the season.

Hawaii did exceed my expectations this season.

Next season will be a Hawaii team with loaded with returning starters and the expectations will be higher by the fans and sports pundits.

With higher expectations come increased pressure to perform and win… Will next years Hawaii team crack under the pressure? Or will they rise up and as the saying goes “Pressure makes Diamonds”.

    Live Aloha/Play Warrior

  108. Old School Dave December 23, 2018 7:43 am

I think that LA Tech got into the heads of UH players with all of the taunting and jawing (originated from the banquet the night before). UH players were more interested in “getting back” at the mouthy and pushy LA Tech players, rather than focusing on their assignments, and it worked. UH failing to capitalize on the 3 turnovers in the first half, was a killer. Cory Batoon’s D played inspired ball in the first half.

Regardless, lessons learned, albeit, the hard way. Gotta get bigger, stronger, faster, quicker during the off-season.

Bad Bowl, but Good Season (8-6)! Still a significant turnaround!

Hurry up and extend Rolo’s contract and give his assistants a pay raise!

  109. anywaaaays!! December 23, 2018 8:27 am

poor coaching, poor preparation. this loss is ENTIRELY on the coaches. rolo needs to make some drastic changes in his coaching staff or rolo himself needs to go.

  110. Rodney December 23, 2018 8:57 am

Elevate coach Batoon for Head Coach!!!

  111. A-House December 23, 2018 9:52 am

like the “Day After Tomorrow” — it’s done — now prepare for a new and bright future!

it all hangs on the coaching staff to accomplish this — returning players and new ones need to secure and retain a positive mind during the off-season

La Tech front 3 was so dominating that UH QBs took a beating — surely, there must be a way to buffet the 3 DL rush and 2 blitzing LBs — Coderio got slammed on 2 consecutive plays like there were no OL blocking — also, plays to off-set such a defensive scheme

Ah, check your stock portfolio (assuming you even know what that is). Trump has done more for especially high-risk than any recent president other than Reagan.

You can choose to wait until a coach decides to leave, then give your crocodile tears and one-line comment farewells that’s supposedly supposed fo impress. Success through progressive means. Try it some time. Not to the left, not to the right. All YOU.

  115. NorthShoreFan December 23, 2018 10:45 am

Great game for the first half. Not sure what happened second half but LaTech turned it up. We just got beat by a great defense. O-line couldn’t protect, QB’s didn’t have time to do anything.
D had too much playing time again….but on to planning for next year.

Record setting bowl game this year….some great some not so.

  116. Boolakanaka December 23, 2018 11:27 am

Rolo needs to go ?? Tell me Enstein who would you get for the same price and go to a bowl game two out of three years??? Seriously, Rolo is third from the bottom of all coaches in D1 in salary and probably at the very bottom considering the cost of living— seriously, of all the inane and entirely uneducated ignorant comments.

  117. cappie the dog December 23, 2018 11:44 am

You don’t fire a coach who made two bowl appearances in three season. Nick Rolovich wants to be here. With the exception of maybe Idaho and New Mexico State, Hawaii has got to be the hardest program to win at. Basketball is even harder because you don’t have a deep talent pool here so you can’t recruit regionally. Take this the right way. Hawaii is like a backwater compared to other athletic departments flushed with money. Rolovich, I think, did yeoman’s work getting this program back to the brink of respectability.

If you fire Rolovich, who are you going to get?

For the time being, you have to be content with mediocrity.

It’s better than staring into the abyss, which is where the program was before Rolovich’s hiring.

  118. Boolakanaka December 23, 2018 11:52 am

And let’s not go through the ridiculous exercise of actually confirming our ignorance and mention Cal Lee as a potential HC. First, he does not want the job as he knows first hand the complexity of the position (and this is primarily all the off field things one must be responsible for) first hand. Two, he would never get hired. You want two words why it’s almost impossible for a very successful high school coach to make it and why it makes a very poor choice—Jerry Faust. You want two more words —Tony Sanchez. Basta!

  119. suckkabooya December 23, 2018 12:20 pm

Everything is on the right track. Everything. A few pieces just have to reach a next level, including Coach Rolovich. Sometimes it’s hard for us to tell if they’re on track (like the end of last year was hard to figure) but right now its easy to see that UH is. Next year is crucial though. Depending on how things are managed it’s possible UH can become an Elite “Group of Five” program (on a similar level to Boise or UCF). Or (if they cant reach that next level) they can become the next San Diego St. Nobody would thought this would be possible one year ago. 2020 will be the year that will determine the programs direction, when all the next level stuff should have been reached and cemented as foundational. Hopefully this Staff can fulfill the potential that came so unexpectedly early. Unexpected success. We shouldn’t be so spoiled, we should feel lucky actually. Lots of time to complain and call for changes, but not yet I think.

  120. H-Man December 23, 2018 12:55 pm

Was unable to post on Reardon’s column. I try here.
I think the D-line played well. It was when La Tech swing it outside that Hawaii couldn’t contain. Kendall Hune is a big surprise this season. He has gotten better and better through the season. I also like the play of Samuela Akoteu. He has great range to make tackles at the sidelines. Ta’ala has to be double-teamed to stop him. I like the D-line.

  121. Old School Dave December 23, 2018 1:11 pm

Making drastic changes to your staff can backfire like with CSU. Bobo fired his entire defensive staff, hired a DC with the highest salary, and the result was a losing season.

Not a popular idea, but a mainland bowl should be the next goal for the program. Las Vegas, anyone?

Is your brilliant insight to make a preemptive termination in the event the coach might choose to leave? Congrats, you are officially the smartest man on the internet-not.

  124. dreamcitymike December 23, 2018 1:39 pm

We displayed youth & inexperience last nite, hope this hurts into the new year & spring & beyond! Coaches, staff & players need to learn from this debacle, we gotta get smarter & down right better real fast with that pac 12 gauntlet looming in the distance! I was expecting a awesome display with 15 extra practices instead got down right dejection! Yep hope this hurts coaches & student athletes, hope this hurts! Live aloha Play warrior!

  125. cappie the dog December 23, 2018 2:08 pm

You have the right to your own opinion, but I define debacle if you are playing badly on both sides of the ball from the outset. Hawaii led at the half. The defense created some eye-popping turnovers which is why I referred to them as being a unicorn and Big Foot. It is something that you never see out of Hawaii. Debacle, I guess can be used to describe the offensive line, though.

“Preempitive” nothing. Man, you let me live for free in that dome of yours, no?

If you really read between the lines of what I advocate, you will see that Saturday’s dismal (it’s nothing else!!!! O.K.? That “game” was embarrassing and dismal for UH and I wouldn’t be surprised if Matlin is meeting with Rolo In offices today. Yes TODAY. Sunday, the “most state workahs no work” day. While the Diamond Head Classic goes on!) further moves toward at least consideration of the football program go move to a lower level. A notch down. Until the program can find itself again. Going down a level would benefit UH football in that:
    • The salary would be competitive;
    • TC Ching field simply has to be among one of THE most quintessential D1 or DII fields around the country. Easy for students to get to;
    • Again, will help UH craft the football identity that they seem to be strugging with. Heck you can even bring back that lousy rainbow logo—very much a D1 or D2 logo.

Just asking for it to be considered. Thought about. Rolled in the mind.

And why do opponents of this automatically scream the proverbial bloody murder?!? Very strange. What are THEY hiding?

  127. Chicken Grease December 23, 2018 2:17 pm

Correction: only meant to mention advocating going down go DII (added on D1 by mistake in my most
    previous comment).

  128. cappie the dog December 23, 2018 2:19 pm

Raimo takes too long deciding what to do with the ball. It’s like watching Vander Joaquim. Vander holds it above his head, whereas Raimo keeps it at chest level. Either way, it usually results in a turnover.

  129. Boolakanaka December 23, 2018 2:20 pm

Silliest comment ever—first basic question, who is going to pay or subsidize all the travel. A division below does NOT have the resources to float such travel. Moreover, again the way title IV works is that your largest sport supports the majority of your women sports and non revenue ones. If you lose D1 football your jeopardized the rest of the programs. So, how would you handle that significant part of the program?? Seriously, what’s your background in management ?? I am on faculty at a school of management and some of your suggestions hold no water not make any sense….#stayinyourownlane

  135. suckkabooya December 24, 2018 12:32 am

I don’t mind the rotation of quarterbacks. As long as it is game planned and prepared for in a specific way so that both QB’s understand their role in it. And especially when the skillsets (of the QB’s) vary in a way that the personnel and formations can contrast. Would mess up the defense for sure. Plus it would excite the fan base (and TV viewer base). The way they rotated Cole and Chevan in Saturday’s game was not in that way. It looked more desperate than decisive. Live and learn though. May as well try it out and see if can work. It didn’t on Saturday, but it will someday. Someday real soon I think, Gonna be unbelievable when it happens.

  136. tom-warriornation December 24, 2018 7:43 am

Sorry for the late comment on the game but the question is “How do you negate a fierce pass rush”?

Why didn’t we do screen passes or swing passes to speedy RB’s like Elijah Dale, Reed or Holly (saw we did one to Furuta but don’t think he has the speed to outrun LB’s or make them miss). Or just plain quick passes to our wideouts or slots; just to avoid our QB’s being in the pocket for too long?

  137. tom-warriornation December 24, 2018 8:05 am

Also when we had Cole do the RPO option; it seemed like he ran on the same side that our RB ran; which didn’t fool their defense–shouldn’t he have ran it the other way?

At least we won the first half; and give credit to our defense that came up with 3 turnovers in the first half; and played the run up the middle very tough. When LA Tech started doing plays to the outside; their speed showed along with great blocking. We also need to recruit better talent like them!

Congrats to our team and coaches for our great season!

  138. Chicken Grease December 25, 2018 12:00 am
