Warriors get commit from Geiger
Hawaii got a commitment from Fullerton College sophomore hitter Garrett Geiger according to the Hornets’ website. He was one of the three recruits in the arena last week.
The 6-foot-5 Geiger led the Hornets in kills during his freshman year in 2018 with 171 and earned second team All-Orange Empire Conference. He also helped Fullerton to a berth in the state tournament, a first for the program in only its third season of existence. Currently, he is leading the 2019 Hornets in kills at 186 with two matches left on the season. Geiger will go down as the all-time leader in career kills.
“Geiger is one of a kind! He’s always looking for a challenge and is inspired by the physical and mental challenges that tough humans take on. We are proud of him”, Hornets head coach Eddie Rapp said in the release.
Believe this was who Hawaii went to see during their road trip to California, in between the Concordia and UCSD matches.
We are the number one team in the country, why are we going after 2nd team all conference players. Nothing against the kid but shouldn’t we aim higher?
1. he was second team all-conference last year. As a freshman. Nine players on the first team, three of his Fullerton teammates, 10 on the second team. Including Kelsey Yogi L Irvine Valley. Don’t understand your problem
I don’t think the original poster has a “problem”. He asked a simple question why the best team in the country would target a juco kid who was a 2nd team player and curren Fullerton team isn’t good at all.
It’s a fair question when you would think the number 1 rated team would be in the mix for all Americans. Ganot would probably be recruiting 2nd team guys for his basketball team. Volleyball is on another level. But only time will tell
In men’s volleyball teams have to share 4.5 scholarships. While the best will demand as close to a full ride as possible a coach still has to field a big enough team to hold practices and provide depth in case of injury or loss of players for whatever reason during the course of a season. It’s like how a NBA team is assembled. No team can afford a starting five of superstars but you can win with two or three stars. Fans of men’s volleyball need to wait till the recruiting class shows up in school. And in some cases even till the spring semester. He is most likely not one of the star guys UH is looking to secure but he is probably a good enough player to contribute at a given position if he is the best available next season. Look at BYU. They lost setter Will Stanley for the season and the back up was not getting it done so they pulled a setter from their club team. Last week they lost to Grand Canyon. Even with two highly touted 6’9 foreign players at OH. That’s where Wade has to be given credit for assembling this group of guys. Next year there is already a coveted 6’7 OH from Europe who has all kinds of accolades and a 6’3 Matautia type OH coming in and are possibly pursuing a middle from Brazil. I doubt seriously this JC guy is taking up much of a scholarship unless he truely is highly recruited. Guys like Rado and Gasman and the two Euros brought in this year are already getting their fair share of scholarship money. And a guy like Colton certainly deserves something.
Being a freshman on the all-conference team really doesn’t mean anything. all juco players are either freshmen or sophomores. i agree with original post, we should be going after international kids or top HS players. if we do go the juco route, they better be in the top 5 juco players

Anyway for this weekend Stijn has to play well Against the Beach at the Pyramid. In his sophomore year and last year at the big west tournament he was awful. Uh can’t Afford that, especially if Ensing AND defalco both play well.
The California state system is intriguing to navigate. I went to a college counselor’s workshop eons ago and was told that the 4 year colleges look at the juco students for entry. Many students who do not get into their college of choice (for whatever reason) will go to a junior college. The admission officers of the 4 year college will accept transfers more readily because the students have nowhere to go after their sophomore year, so they will take them over a sophomore from a 4 year college as those students do have a school. I don’t know if this makes sense or not. At one time, I viewed an SAT video that showed a number of students preparing their college applicants. I thought it was sour grapes when a student didn’t get into Berkeley and said, “well, I will just go to a junior college”. I know this is not volleyball related but I wouldn’t necessarily equate their junior colleges to ours.
This was eons of years ago so the practices may have changed.
Since our three redshirt juniors are academic seniors this year (I’m assuming), will they be returning as graduate students next year to play as fifth-year seniors? Mahalo for your patience and answer.
As they say in the circuit, “if you are good, they will find you. (Regardless of who you play for.)” Coaches may prefer their recruits play for stronger prep, club, JuCo programs, but they also recognize loyalty. Maybe Greiger’s recruitment to Fullerton started early and he wanted to go to the college that offered first, maybe he is a legacy and mom/dad played sports there, etc.
We do not know where Greiger will be on the depth chart, but people have to understand that SOME programs are able to keep and maintain a cupboard full of blue-chippers, but as we’ve seen with recent outgoing transfers, players wanna play. Coaches may have their tier I athletes (guaranteed starter/first off bench), tier II (project), tier III (fundraisers), etc. We’ve seen a mini log jam at Opposite between Stijn, Rado…and now Humler, but it worked out because nobody had to sit for more than one year.
On that same-ish note, as awesome as we were last year, having Stijn be a 6 rotation OH allowed Rado to take the oppo position. Stijn was Stijn, but struggled with some of his passing/backcourt play and we were still as good as we were. That whole experience of last year “returning” to his natural position as OH paid off ten-fold for this year. Rado also had some bouts of offensive struggles, but he grinded it out and hit the weight room/practice gym hard in the off-season and those two players have been exactly what everyone was hoping to see.
Great job coaching staff in building our state’s program back to the level of prominence we once held in the late 90’s. I think Milan Zarkovic compliments Charlie Wade extremely well. I feel like him to Wade is like what Wade was like to Shoji in SOME ways. Either way, it works!

3. Was just asking what the issue/problem was with going after a player who got second-team as a freshman in a very competitive conference. Plus he had three other teammates on the first team which only had nine players. Voters likely couldn’t justify Fullerton having four. Just how the voting goes.
What voters think of a certain player doesn’t reflect the true value of a player.
Case in point: Nikki Taylor twice was a second team All-American. just how the points fall. or the bias.
4 – I heard he actually committed in January. Guess they held off the official announcement until after his visit.
Mahalo Cindy for your insight. The guy you were replying to (#3) mostly posts and tweets about UH football, baseball, and basketball, and now volleyball. I guess he’s knowledgeable about every UH sport. That’s why I don’t post cause I don’t know anything. But I like your post because it’s reasonable and makes sense.
Sometimes you can’t tell how good a player will be based on his all-star credentials when younger (1st team, 2nd team, etc). For example, I looked back at 1984 (year I grad) Advertiser all-state football team, available on HA website. I accurately remembered how Leo Goeas was “only” 2nd team all-ILH his senior year, and never made 1st team All-WAC (2nd team All-WAC senior year only) yet was drafted in the 3rd round and played and started several years in the NFL. Bern Brostek was “only” 3rd Team All-State his senior year, yet was recruited by Washington, was a 1st round draft pick and also had a decent NFL career.

the conflict is with baseball hosting Fuillerton Thursday & Friday
Warriors have a bye into Friday’s semis. if they are No. 2 seed, they play at 5 p.m., No. 1 seed plays at 7:30. Baseball is 6:35 p.m.
Since baseball is at 1:05 on saturday there is no conflict with the 7 p.m. VB final.
Looking at the baseball schedule, they don’t have any TV info up for the Titans series. just radio.
