UCI coach David Kniffin usually has more to say in postgame comments that UCI posts. This was it:
“The first set felt like a No. 2 versus No. 3 match-up. Hawaii kept the pressure on more consistently tonight. This is an area we know we need to, and can, improve.”

I wonder what the UCI coach (David Kniffen) said tonite on their 2nd consecutive lost (mind you , sweep) to the Warriors. I am guessing he would not comment the same as he did last night. A humble coach would just say after being swept twice at their place, ” We just got simply outplayed and outcoached!” Period!

  6. Cindy Luis March 2, 2019 8:50 pm

    5. Not sure why you’re taking issue with Kniffen’s comments. He may have said more but that was all their SID put in the release. He’s has a philosophy degree and he usually sounds like it.
    Here’s quote from tonight.
“Coming into the weekend I was curious, coming out of the weekend the only question I have left is what do we want to do about it,” UCI coach David Kniffin said in a press release. “When you play a good team like Hawaii they are going to expose you and everything you need to work on and we know what we need to work on now.”

  7. Cindy Luis March 2, 2019 9:31 pm

    5. found some other quotes from UCI coach after Friday to the Off The Block reporter
“I definitely would’ve liked to see us play a little bit more in that point to point mentality that we talk about,” UC Irvine head coach David Kniffin said. “We definitely got caught up in the pressure and some of the errors, and when you’re playing like that against a good team and one play you’re thinking about the next play, it’s hard to put your full attention in the play at hand. And against Hawaii, you need to put your full attention at the play at hand.”

  8. Matt March 2, 2019 10:53 pm

You would think, that with all of their arsenal back, UC Irvine could have been good contenders in the BWC. They returned Stadick, Schneidmiller, Chakravorti, Wilmot, Parker, Koubi and Apfelbach to their line while Hawaii lost key libero Tui Tuiletta. There was concern as to how they could beat Irvine on the road with the set streak on the line. Hawaii has NEVER beat UCI in straight sets before, let alone, on the road of all places. It’s not easy because usually in the Hawaii-Irvine battles, it lasts for about 4 or 5 sets, and rarely 3. With the way UCI is playing, if they can’t handle Hawaii, how can they beat LBSU? It’s like UC Irvine is lost and LBSU is pretty much dominating, and Hawaii is tangled in the middle of it. UCSB as well is just playing the silent assassin, waiting to sneak and fly by under the radar. UCSD is not much of a threat in all honesty, especially since they’re pretty much a punching bag to the other BWC teams. I mean, UCSD had their chances when they could have won UCI in 5, but blew it. However, Hawaii’s toughest challenges will be for one, BYU, and LBSU. BYU in particular because it’s going to be at the Smith Fieldhouse, but, I looked at the recent game of BYU vs Stanford, BYU lost in 4 to Stanford in the Maples Pavilion, and that after BYU won in 5 at Smith Fieldhouse to Stanford. I just think Hawaii might have a tough time battling BYU and LBSU on the road because it’s tough to win there. But…with the way they’re playing, I think this could be an interesting season with twists and turns here and there. Can’t wait to see where this goes.

We better get some awards this week, thats all I’m saying! GO Bows! 2 sweeps in a row against #3. Cheeee!

  10. Kahuna March 3, 2019 10:12 am

Individual Award are not and should not be that important. When you have a team full of potential AAs like UH players don’t always put up crazy numbers needed to win awards because you need to spread the wealth around.

Stop worrying about awards and be happy we are undefeated and #2.

Weekly awards are forgotten the very next day you receive it because when that player return to practice the next day, the coaches is going to treat him the same as before. He ain’t getting any breaks just because he was DA MAN for one week.

The ultimate goal is to win the national championship and not pile up individual awards.

    Go Warriors!!

  11. jmy March 3, 2019 10:54 am

    10. I don’t think anyone’s worried about it…It’s always nice to be recognized for a great performance…

  12. Maverick March 3, 2019 11:43 am

    8. Inaccurate: “Hawaii has NEVER beat [sic] UCI in straight sets before, let alone, on the road of all places.”

UH swept UCI numerous times, even twice in the same season:
    At home: 1990, 1994, 1996 (x2), 1998, 2000, 2002 (x2), 2004, 2006, 2008
    At UCI: 1989 (x2), 1993, 1997, 2005
UH leads the all-time series 37-22 (.627), including this weekend’s results.
(Source: UH Men’s Volleyball Record Book)

It is accurate to say that before this weekend, UH hadn’t swept UCI in the last decade or so, the Speraw (and now Kniffin) era when UCI won 4 national championships and Wade was rebuilding the program.

Based on results to date, LBSU and UH are the elite teams, there is a gap, then a group including UCSB, UCLA, Pepperdine, & UCI, and after that, everyone else. But there is plenty of volleyball left to play.

I watched both UH-UCI matches several times and, as the announcer mentioned last night, UH can terminate at a high rate at 5 positions. The team hits for .478, much higher than last year’s .340, and the real improvement has been in Parapunov, who has raised his hitting percentage by 240 POINTS! Van Tilburg doesn’t have to carry the team, and his hitting has risen by .170. Cowell is the poster-boy for the well-known adage, “there is simply no substitute for hard work when it comes to achieving success.” The team blocks well (Parapunov, Gasman and Van Tilburg are the Great Wall of Aloha; after all, “aloha means goodbye” to opposing hitters), has several pressure servers, and follows a Napoleon-like floor general in Joe Worsley. His brother Gage digs balls you’d think were sure kills, but somehow, he raises them from the near-dead. Despite playing a largely mediocre competition aside from UCI has been mediocre. However, UH gave its strongest performances against its strongest opponent on the road.

This could be the best UH team in years, even better than the 2017 final four squad. In an interview that year, Mark Presho (UCI assistant coach) said UH’s greatness would be largely determined by how well it played on the road. He expected UH to be very strong at home, but could it beat MSPF teams away from home? That year on the road, UH beat UCSD, Cal Baptist, UCI and UCLA, but lost 0-2 to BYU and LBSU, for a 5-4 regular season conference away record. UH was undefeated at home in all matches.

The same holds true this year, with big conference tests at UCI (passed with flying colors) and LBSU (at least split), and an important match at BYU (seriously, should win). I expect UH to beat everyone at home. But UH needs to remain focused and continue playing at an elite level. Last year’s post-season snub is driving this team. As Chancellor Palpatine said to Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith, “I can feel your anger. It gives you focus, makes you stronger.”

  13. Maverick March 3, 2019 12:04 pm

    12. Grammatical/editing correction. Should read, “Despite playing a largely mediocre schedule to date, UH gave its strongest performances against its strongest opponent (UCI) on the road.”

  14. jm2375 March 3, 2019 2:20 pm

Maverick – “Great Wall of Aloha”, love it. Great analysis.

Looking forward to seeing the boys again at home this weekend.

    GO WARRIORS!!

  15. Manoafan March 3, 2019 6:01 pm

This past weekend the Warriors made last year’s NCAA selection committee last year look like a bunch of unfair @$$#0!&# AND *@#*^% … and I hope there is a new committee this year because last year’s bunch needs to play the fair card and not eat 5000 Krispie Kreme’s and farting silent ones behind closed doors making like they are volleyball Gods.

I still can’t over the Warriors getting snubbed last year. We should have been the National Champs and defending the title the year. We had a legitimate shot! >:-/

  16. T103 March 3, 2019 6:15 pm

@kahuna, wow, way to be a Debbie downer aye? indeed it’s just nice to have recognition of a great match. Of course I know individual awards don’t matter at the end of the day, team effort, everyone contributes. Thats like saying we shouldn’t keep stats anymore, like so and so had this many kills, digs, or blocks, and whats most important is if we won or lost. I’m surprisingly shocked and ecstatic that we swept #3 Irvine at home twice in a row. Usually its a lot closer then 3 set sweep. This team is the real deal, Go Warriors!

  17. Cindy Luis March 4, 2019 9:37 am
