No. 2 Hawaii 3, Queens 0; UCLA outlasts Stanford in 5
Freshman opposite Filip Humler put down a career-high 10 kills with just one error and No. 2 Hawaii swept host Queens 25-13, 25-17, 25-16 in today’s nonconference men’s volleyball match at Charlotte, N.C.
It was the first road match for the Rainbow Warriors (6-0), who have not dropped a set this season. Hawaii also got eight kills from junior hitter Colton Cowell and seven from junior opposite Rado Parapunov, the latter playing only in Set 1.
The Royals (2-8), a second-year program, were led by sophomore hitter Nic Cavallari’s eight kills.
Hawaii out blocked Queens 11-6 and won the dig war 28-14. The Warriors also had six aces — three by Humler — while holding the Royals without an ace.
Cowell and junior middle Patrick Gasman each were in on five blocks and Humler 4. Humler did not commit a hitting error until his 17th.
Hawaii, the national leader in hitting percentage (.470), finished at .458, including .700 in Set 1.
Hawaii was in control from the start and, by the time the Warriors were leading Set 2 at 15-10, all 12 on the travel squad had seen the Levin Center court.
The Warriors face St. Francis (5-3) on Friday and have a rematch with the Royals on Saturday.

3:10: Hawaii up 16-11. With Max Rosenfeld in, Warriors have used all 12 players they brought on the trip.

Joe is a phenomenal setter only thing is I hope the middles can be involved in the offense….too many sets to Stijn and Rado.
1. tonight Rado had eight sets, SVT 3.
they run the middle when they can but their strengths are the pins.
Both Solbrig and Gasman had 7 attempts and ended up with five kills each.
Over in Westwood, Austin Matautia got hot at the right time to help UCLA turn back Stanford, 21-25, 25-14, 16-25, 26-24, 15-10. Matautia was hitting negative until midway through Set 3 with 5 kills and 5 errors. He finished with 12 kills and no more hitting errors after those 5. had eight digs and was in on four blocks.
Rattray didn’t play.
I was sorry to see Austin Matautia transfer to UCLA and was wondering why he didn’t have to sit out a year like many transfers.
Nice to see the reserves get playing time.
#4 – there’s no transfer redshirt rule for MVB, in general, although if a player transfers between teams in the same conference, not sure about having to sit out. That’s why Austin and Brandon could play right away. (And proving what we’ve been saying all along – the UH B team players could start on almost any other team.)
2. Yes thats true but both only played one set. When you play the patty cake teams thats a chance to get the middles going. At times last week Hawaii was fairly predictable at times just setting pins.
4. Hawaii released both Matautia and Rattray so there was no issue about playing right away, especially since they aren’t in the same conference.
If I remember correctly, there’s been times such as in women’s volleyball that if you don’t get a release you have to sit out two season. which may longer be in affect.
Both players wanted to leave, in part, because they weren’t going to get the playing time they wanted. They’ve been able to help UCLA although Rattray hasn’t played the last two matches. Not sure if he is hurt.
6. I agree that you want more balance but the bottom line is you go with what is going to score points.
They set the middles enough to keep the block honest. You also have to consider when they set the middle. They’ve gone to Gasman a lot to start matches, which opens up the outside.
You also have Solbrig running the step-out so technically that is an outside attack.
