Warrior Beat: Whacky Wednesday

Freaky Friday?

No, today was Whacky Wednesday, during which several offensive and defensive players switched roles.

The purpose was twofold: 1) It allowed an offensive player to see what a defensive counterpart goes through. 2) It gave the coaches a chance to see if, down the road, a receiver could be used as a cornerback.

“It gave us a look at some guys who may be newer to the program, see what their skill set is,” head coach Nick Rolovich said.

    Good morning, Tsaikos! 🤙🏽

  2. Boolakanaka December 5, 2018 11:13 am

Ursua would be a helluva of a nickelback.

  3. seewhy December 5, 2018 11:15 am

You only know if you go undah da helmet.

  4. seewhy December 5, 2018 11:17 am

    RE: #2 Bool

Amen to dat. With his speed. 💨

  5. Boolakanaka December 5, 2018 11:38 am

#4, yep. It’s his speed, but moreover, he has really good movement in small spaces and the ability to rotate his hips. If you got speed, and good feet, which Ursua does, he has actually super sweet feet, and ability to open up your hips and turn and run, well, you got all the markings of a great nickel-back.

Now, when you also take into consideration his elite hands and ball skills, he would be dangerous. The one item I think he is missing is makeup speed, to be clear, he is very quick, I just have not seen him turn and go, and makeup the difference on folks. If he did play nickel, I would have him play 5-6 pounds heavier, so he could put his hands on people….

  6. Stephen Tsai December 5, 2018 12:58 pm

    Seewhy:
Ursua would be a heck of a point guard.

  7. Stephen Tsai December 5, 2018 12:59 pm

I think Ernest Moore would be a terrific power forward. He’s 6-8 and 305 pounds. And he used to wear Amar’e Stoudemire goggles.

  8. clyde December 5, 2018 1:53 pm

Cross training; what a great idea. Perhaps they’ll uncover a gem with position switch.

#6: Yes, Stephen, he was a great point guard in high school. I recall his highlights and Miah Ostrowski’s impact to the UH basketball team came to mind.

  9. roygbivs December 5, 2018 2:17 pm

    Love da concept!!

Could see some outfielders in baseball
    Ward, Farris, Hicks, Okeke

    Love Rolo, keeping it FRESH

Ouch, Arizona Western is dropping football after this season.

  11. Da Punchbowl Kid December 5, 2018 3:20 pm

Nice! There may be hidden gems on the team, and this one way to find them. Coach Rolo does it right! Looking from different angles can be very revealing. This also reminds us how many great athletes we have in reserve.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  12. ai-eee-soos December 5, 2018 4:22 pm

    Don’t get too whacked out.

This is the last days of classes.

    Finals next week.

    GO WARRIORS !!!

    ACE them exams !!!

  13. ET December 5, 2018 4:49 pm

I don’t know if they did this in previous years but Devon Stubblefield is like a magnet to the football on kickoffs. I would have really like to see him play safety if he had some years left. For that matter, I would have like to have seen him on the baseball field as well after playing for SL state team.

  14. seewhy December 5, 2018 5:47 pm

    RE: #10 burro

Very disappointing. I know that’s one school that UH recruits from.

  15. cappie the dog December 5, 2018 6:23 pm

Mr. Tsai: You know who would have been a terrific power forward? Tony Akpan.

How much better would those back-to-back teams be if Haim Shimonovich had more rest?

  16. suckkabooya December 5, 2018 7:03 pm

Manase can run block unreal. 21 personnel FB or H in max protect RnS
Keliiliki would be a good bandit in an aggressive middle run blitz scheme.
Laulu would be an awesome H. Big target in RPO
I want Stallworth as coverage nickel or CB in 3rd and 10 or more
McDonald could be a nice rush first Bandit…But receiver first please.
Vanterpool and Hune could probably swap positions and not skip a beat. Both seem interchangeable. Vanterpool more stout. Hune more agile.
Augafa could play a lot of different positions O and D.
And Nuuanu-Kuhi’iki would be a good example of why you need to do this kind of evaluation once in a while.

  17. ai-eee-soos December 5, 2018 7:25 pm

McDonald – H-back, receiver. Has to put on weight.

  18. suckkabooya December 5, 2018 7:42 pm

    ai-eee-soos

To get to the NFL as a versatile utility athlete he needs to gain at least 10 pounds. imagine if he had some defensive reps as FS, SS, nickel. He could play QB, WR, slot, H, TE, punt returner, kick returner, kick coverage specialist, and kickoff gunner. Maybe Harding can teach him how to rugby punt too (just wishing). He can do this.

  19. Glenn December 5, 2018 7:48 pm

I’d like to see Ernest Moore line up as a goal line TE and sneak into the end zone for a TD catch. Or he could just block.

  20. Old School Dave December 5, 2018 9:29 pm

Salaries of Strength & Conditioning coaches at the FBS level. MWC school’s S & C coaches are from $92K (SJSU) to the mid $150K range (CSU & Boise St.) with the highest one (SDSU) earning $189K. I believe the advertised starting salary for the new UH Football Strength Coach is class B or around ) $53,000.

They look good. When does La. Tech arrive?

Herd after today’s practice Zach Wilson might be the teams best receiver. Rolo said Wilson was routing them up!

  24. Savich December 5, 2018 10:26 pm

If they’ll let Ursua run whole game, I say 4 TD to Ursua. Hawai’i will win. Make sure Cole picks this up, and not miss the opportunity like you did on several games.

  25. Savich December 5, 2018 10:28 pm

Excuse me. He did. And he missed this on several games. Utah state game. Wrong route. Long….

Fresno State winning the MWC title. Las Vegas Bowl. 7-5 Pac 12 Arizona state. Fresno State should win this Bowl game. December 15, 2018. Las Vegas Bowl.

  27. Savich December 5, 2018 10:44 pm

When was the last time Hawai’i won a MWC title? 2007, Colt Brennan was quarterback. Hawai’i went 12-0. Did not need a MWC playoffs. They just won it. JJ was the HC.

  28. Savich December 5, 2018 10:49 pm

Please note, Clemson had a playoff in the ACC. 12-0 Clemson played Pittsburgh 7-5. They do it this way in the ACC.

  29. Savich December 5, 2018 11:00 pm

If they went with Clemson and Clemson lost in the ACC title game with Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh would have not made it into the playoff championships yet. Clemson still retains title shot. Funny heh?

  30. seewhy December 6, 2018 12:29 am

    RE: #23 coachdb

If he has that much potential, he could always make the switch just like C.J. Hawthorne did in 07. That was such a game changing move because he added that 4th element in the dreadhead lineup. He went from a reserve DB with only 5 starts to a 61 rec, 859 yd, 6TD receiver.

  31. Tempmanoa December 6, 2018 3:57 am

On coaching salaries— we know Rolo is just short of the bottom of head coaches. The other area we hurt in is low pay for assistants and coordinators. If we get a good one, experience shows they will be quickly gone for higher pay. Several have gone to P5 teams. Someone said awhile back that is how it works with assistants— but we start them lower so there is higher chance they leave us and if there is a real good one we would pay to keep, we cannot afford it.

  32. cappie the dog December 6, 2018 7:01 am

If you want to be a glass half-full kind of guy, be relieved that Hawaii is affiliated with a conference for football. I don’t take it for granted. It was so important that the Warriors moved up the standings this season. I think the Mountain West has designs on casting Hawaii out the first chance they get. Remember, these are some of the same schools who perpetuated the eventual death of the WAC as a football entity. Geez. How clandestine. Meeting at an airport in Denver. I don’t trust, who was it, Colorado State, Air Force, and San Diego State? I don’t trust the MWC commissioner.

Hawaii is not New Mexico State, at least.

    I speak for myself.

  33. Andrew December 6, 2018 8:11 am

Kyler Murray beats out Tua for AP player of the year with 39 first place votes vs. Tua’s 13. I think the Heisman will be a landslide win for Kyler also

    #32.

I think BYU was in the mix.

and, yes, we ARE in a tenuous position in the MWC.

Hell, BYU was selected to be the MWC’s representative in the Potato Bowl.

If BYU decides to join the MWC we would be the odd man out,
if no one else is invited to join at the same time.

The only attraction Hawaii has, is the Hawaii Bowl, and perhaps,
    the travel subsidy.

  35. ai-eee-soos December 6, 2018 10:36 am

Speaking of namasu – New Mexico State

    2020 at Aloha Stadium

    2021 at Lost Cruces.

just can’t get rid them, but we might still “need” them further.

  36. Chicken Grease December 6, 2018 10:57 am

Just don’t get hurt during Bowl season practice, Warriros. After all, this is a winable, WAC Retro game even WITHOUT practice.

  38. kahuna December 6, 2018 1:08 pm

The conference don’t have to ditch UH just because BYU joins. Nobody plays everybody anyway so it can be worked out. The conference could also put out feelers and see if they are interested in becoming a member. Teams like Rice, UTEP SMU, and maybe even Houston might want to join so they can battle teams like Boise, Fresno State and Utah State on a yearly basis to help their strength of schedule.

I would like to see the AAC and the MWC try and form a super conference where some of the AAC team joins the MWC and the others merge with Conference USA.

  39. Andrew December 6, 2018 1:16 pm

BYU is not joining the Mountain West. That would be a big step down for them

Playing during Week Zero is another attraction.

    Super Conference ???

The old WAC was a super conference in size.

Then the sneaky breakup of the WAC, and its demise.

Many of the old WAC is now part of the MWC.

What makes you think this new Super Conference won’t have the same problems with its new, far flung members ?

Hawaii is LUCKY to be a member of a conference, and we have to pay a membership fee to belong.

  42. Kahuna December 6, 2018 2:09 pm

#39….. maybe or maybe not. There is a lot of benefits of joining a conference. It helps TREMENDOUSLY in helping fill your schedule. It allows players to become all conference thus adding to the player’s resume. Believe it or not, those kind of honors are hard to come by and any player would love to be all conference.

BYU have ZERO all conference player due to not being in a conference.

Once scheduling becomes an overbearing hardship, I can see BYU joining the MWC conference. I think their reluctance to join the MWC is not because they have a great thing going on now but because they are hoping to join a BIGGER conference like the Big 12 or the PAC 12.

If BYU was to join the MWC and wins the conference, they could get a shot at the NY6 bowls. Right now, as an independent, they practically have to go undefeated to get an invite.

Bottom line….having a conference call home have more benefits than being an independent. I just think the current BYU administration are just to greedy and wants in on a P5 conference. I

  43. Savich December 6, 2018 2:10 pm

Congratulations to Kyler Murray, Oklahoma Sooners QB on winning the Heisman. He beat out Tua Tagovailoa, 39 votes to 13 votes for the national title.

Oklahoma is looking for their 8th national title.

  44. winning December 6, 2018 2:13 pm

Some reasons why JJ should have been chosen as Head Coach: Salaries would probably have been subsidized, less turnover of coaches (remember 7-7 to 3-9 most likely due to coaching replacements), additional experienced coaches, gate probably would be at least 5-10k more. Never mind skeletons in the closet-they don’t win football games. Furthermore, although our HAC did a decent job this season, what if Nick
Rolo accepts a higher head coaching position somewhere else? As Aie-e-soos would say Ai Yai Yai !! Athletic department, to me, is caught between a rock and a hard place

  45. Savich December 6, 2018 2:16 pm

As I mentioned before, I think Oklahoma can win. Alabama must win Kyler Murray for the national title. What better than to give it to Kyler Murray already.

Clemson must win Notre Dame first. Then either Oklahoma or Alabama. That is how it looks. I think they made a good choice in Kyler Murray. Sooner QB. 5-10 195ibs.

We’ll see how it turns out.

  46. Savich December 6, 2018 2:27 pm

It appears KIFdon’t count. Tua….and the Heisman. Good choice gentlemen.

  47. ai-eee-soos December 6, 2018 2:27 pm

I agree. BYU was thinking about themselves.

Now they might want to come back into the MWC,

which as you implied, might be mo bettah for them.

Yup, BYU is thining about BYU, FIRST.

  48. winning December 6, 2018 2:28 pm

Watched Wahine play last night, and they showed some hustle. The team could use some more speed and height. Too bad UH has such strict academic requirements, ditto for the rest of the athletic department.

  49. Andrew December 6, 2018 2:44 pm

My reasoning on BYU not joining the MWC is because they are waiting for a power 5 conference, They see themselves as being above mid majors. When the conference tv contracts are up for renewal it is already well rumored that the power 5 conferences will be realigning and of course BYU hopes to get in. They money in those conference far outweigh the money in the MWC obviously, so there really is not point in joining a mid major conference. They also if i’m not mistaken make more money from TV already than mid major schools.

  50. Andrew December 6, 2018 2:45 pm

The TV money in those conferences**

  51. Savich December 6, 2018 2:46 pm

Oklahoma has the defense. And the running game. Special teams. With Kyler Murray. Is this enough?

    Alabama (same) offense…etc.
    Notre Dame (same) offense…etc.
    Clemson (same) offense….etc.

  52. Savich December 6, 2018 2:48 pm

There are some players just don’t pull their own weight. Kyler has shown enough. Heisman.

  53. Savich December 6, 2018 3:01 pm

So Texas lost to Oklahoma. That means Oklahoma is 12-0 and not 12-1.

Fairly good teams. Same as Notre Dame. Notre Dame has not won a national title since 1988. So, Oklahoma will be proving themselves worthy again. 8th national title. Kyler Murray, to do it.

    Go out with a bang.

  54. Savich December 6, 2018 3:32 pm

Unfortunately, they don’t call this the Fantastic Mountain West Conference. Or FMWC

Just like they do, on the Big 12 conference on Oklahoma. Formerly, Big 8.

  55. Rodney December 6, 2018 4:34 pm

Tua will lose the Hiesman gaurentee.
    Oklahoma will get embarrassed
    by Tua’s performance(and run game)

    34.

    ESPN has too much power.

According to Jerry Palm’s forecast, he had BYU out of the bowl picture.

I don’t think Palm is just some guy with a blog.

    ESPN stepped in. ESPN overreached.

    If I’m Wyoming, I’m p***** off.

These are the guys who left Chaminade out of their own tournament.

  57. cappie the dog December 6, 2018 6:12 pm

    47.

Their starting center scored again. That is two consecutive games. She was scoreless in the first seven games. I wish the coach would just leave her out there. I missed the Idaho game, but normally opposing teams score at will near the basket. Even last year against Hawaii Pacific. The starting center needs to learn to foul hard, a clean hard. Too many layups.

  58. Derek December 6, 2018 7:43 pm

Tua wins the Maxwell and Walter Camp Awards. Dang, I didn’t expect that. With all the chatter and hype, I thought Murray would win those awards too. Walter Camp award is significant because the voters are the 130 FBS head coaches and sports information directors. The Heisman Trophy has regional voting. I would think Tua would fare very well in the South, and in the West, and Murray would do well in the Southwest and Midwest, while Haskins would do well in the Northeast. Former Heisman winners get a vote, but that a very small sampling. ESPN had Murray with the edge, but I don’t know. I think it’s going to very close. Since Tua won the Maxwell and Camp, I think he has a shot. It’s going to be between him and Murray and balloting should be very close.

  59. Kahuna December 6, 2018 8:01 pm

I don’t think if there was a realignment, that BYU is going to be part of a super conference. My guess is there are some schools in the P5 that will be left out and they may have to realign with the G5.

Ohio State, Texas, Michigan, USC, Washington, Oklahoma, Alabama, Florida, etc….will make up a super conference and this conference can then demand big money from ESPN.

Schools like Vanderbilt, Iowa State, Missouri, Oregon State, etc…will be left out and then have to form their own conferences with others being left out and those from the current G5 conferences. BYU will not be a part of a super conference so they should stop dreaming too much and come back into the MWC.

  63. A-House December 7, 2018 7:17 am

UH coaches salaries are what they are and no subjectivity will change that unless the Gov & Legislature makes a concerted effort to prop up athletics

then, other pundits will raise hell about education, infrastructure, medical, etc., etc.

Hawaii may have the most millionaires if you use real property value as the only basis of justification

forget about mulit-millionaires/billionaires who have zero interest in sports!!!

  64. A-House December 7, 2018 7:20 am

if the ‘big boys” form a separate SUPER CONFERENCE, other P5 conferences will co-exist — may be lesser $$$, but much more than the ‘ middle ‘

this would be the perfect time for UH to petition the PAC 10 for entry w/o any travel subsidies unless all schools pay for visiting teams.

  68. burro sabio December 7, 2018 9:24 am

Mr. A-House, it’s a give and take. The billionaires in Hawaii aren’t going to just give money to UH, they want something in return. Boone Pickens didn’t just give money to Oklahoma State, it was deposited in one of his management companies on behalf of OSU. Phil Knight gets the Nike exposure at Oregon. Maybe Larry Ellison has to be asked to help the sailing team as that is something that he has previously been involved in. Maybe pursue help from the local pro golfers to help the golf team. If some of the non-revenue sports get support it takes pressure off of football to support them.
