The nation’s leader in touchdown receptions — John Ursua — scored a big honor, being named to the 2018 All-Mountain West first team.
Here’s why:

1. Simple answer. Hawaii passes the most in the country and the top 2 QBs in the MW were Brett Rypien and Jordan Love. Having the best fantasy stats doesn’t make you the best QB. Marcus McMariyon was probably 3rd best QB. The job of a QB is to run an efficient offense, not put up the most passing yards
Totally agree. Passing stats are misleading. Cole, however, is at a disadvantage in that Hawaii does not have the running game to complement its passing game. The coaching staff’s offensive play calling depended upon their strength. I would like to see what Hawaii can do with an improved rushing game.
We would’ve blown San Diego away if it wasn’t for those 2 key fumbles.
Want to get more recognition?
1) Start improving your conference standing.
2) Play better defense, both against the rush and the pass. Just look at the statistics and amounts of points allowed. Horrendous.
3) Run the ball better. The ideal of an very good offense is to score at least 40 points per game, and average at least 450 yards per game. A good pass/run option is 325 yards passing and 125 yards rushing in this type of offense. But you have to score, period.
Rolo and coaches need to greatly improve the defense if we want to be a serious championship contender. Just look at Boise St., Fresno State, and Utah St. this year. Get the recruits, man! But it’s a good year to get to a bowl game and that should help get some good players if they do their jobs well. So, congratulations is in order, but there is lots of work to do.
Congrats to the honored Warriors! And congrats to all of the Warrior staff and players for a successful regular season. On to the bowl game (whichever one that may be).

Individual recognition comes with team success…….its no secret. The top teams get the most players on the all-star teams.
14. Part true but this Hawaii team really did win games as a team and didn’t have many individual standouts besides Ursua and Padello. Josh Oliver got 1st team TE and San Jose St didn’t win much.
All Conference teams get weighted heavier on how well you play in conference games. There’s really no strong argument for Cole to beat out Rypien, McMaryion, or Love. He played 2 really good conference games in Colorado St and San Diego St. He played average vs Fresno St, Nevada, and San Jose St. He didn’t play vs Wyoming. He played poorly vs Utah St and UNLV. McMaryion and Love destroyed us to the point they didn’t have to play full games. So I don’t really care about overall stats when if you just watch the games, MW got it right at QB.
The guys who got snubbed were Byrd and Ward. There should be 3 WRs on each team instead of 2 and I definitely think Byrd should have gotten 2nd team if they had 6 total WRs. Ward probably honorable mention. Fresno could probably complain the most about KeeSean Johnson not getting 1st team because of this. They aren’t a pass first team and Johnson was probably the best WR in the league.

I can see 5 to 7 losses. I can see 5 to 7 wins. We can be happy we’re 8-5 and going bowling this year. Let’s not forget that out of the 8 wins, we beat only 1 team winning team (San Diego St.) when we played the teams. We lost to a running team (Army), we were trashed by BYU, Nevada, Fresno, and Utah State who ran the ball at will against us. The last 2 times we won a conference championship was when Paul Johnson ran the spread offense in which we ran the ball well and controlled the clock and Wagner’s defense was good. The other time was when June Jones had Colt Brennan (Heisman 2nd runner up) and those receivers and Illaoa scored at will and the defense played well enough to make the big
plays. Even when we went 12-0 and the Sugar Bowl some of those games were nail biters, so it ain’t easy. I marvel how Central Florida has won 23 straight games in a row, maybe 24 now. But they might lose this Saturday against Memphis without Milton. He’s just a special player, just like Tua (a great special player). He going to win the Heisman for sure. Hard to believe, man, 2 QBs former St. Louis alums, that are Heisman Trophy winners from Hawaii. Simply amazing. You have to credit Vinnie Passas.

I think if we played this years schedule next year (with all these returnees, an unbelievable amount) UH could go undefeated in my opinion. Utah St, Fresno St (because on the road) and BYU (because on the road) would be close games but next years defense would be more physical than this year’s team. And I think Batoon would be ready for Utah St’s tempo (with his own tempo scheme), Army’s power game (with an aggressive counter scheme) and Navy’s finesse (with sheer physicality and depth, front and back end).
This was the first year of this “New Era”. Lots of underclassmen and lots of “growing pains”. But lots of “maturity” was acquired as the season went along. Point is I don’t think you will be able to compare not only the personnel to this years team, but also the Coaching; applied strategy, scheme, proficiency and playbook to this year as well. We will see a different product for sure. The schedule is much tougher next year but totally reasonable to manage for this Staff (especially with guidance from veteran guys like Logo, Webber, Batoon and Banker) to oversee the development and maturation of their groups. I have high expectations. Hopefully more of us can see what is possible moving forward. With the upcoming schedule being what it is, next year has a chance to be “special”. Hard to believe. They just have to be prepared for these challenges. So good. So lucky for us.

It’s true that stats aren’t a true measurement.
But I always thought run-and-shoot QBs had challenges because opponents know they’re going to pass. Most of the time.
Which is why I thought Solo — Fa‘asolo, to family members — did a terrific job this year.

The best news is that we have a strong group of returnees, some promising red-shirts and a program on the rise. The schedule will be tougher next year, but so will we!

35. It is challenging. There there are flawed stats involved though. If Fresno, Boise st, or Utah St get up 3 scores plus which they have a lot this year, it’s very likely they’ll run more or bring in a back up. I wouldn’t punish QBs who play extremely well for handing off the call in a game that has been decided..
For Hawaii, the offense is the run n shoot so even with a bigger lead, Hawaii will still pass. And when you’re in tight match up or trailing in lot of games, you will pass more. Cole has a great first season. But his numbers weren’t going to fool voters in thinking he was better than the top 3 guys.

If Brian Gordon hangs onto that potential go-ahead TD pass at BYU in 1993, the narrative of head coaches changes. I was stupefied when June Jones left UH to take the SMU job. Until the softball team beat Alabama on a walk-off home run in the Super Regionals, I thought the season-ending win over BYU was the greatest game in UH sports. All I’m saying is that Paul Johnson could have been our coach, followed by Ken Niumatalolo.
No Sugar Bowl, but no abyss either.

Wow. After all that, your conclusion is “That’s a credit to the entire football program.” Rolo needs to hire you as “Bring Positivity, Joy, and Motivation Coach”. That’s right after he gives you free tickets to the Hawaii Bowl. 🙄
Seems like a good, even match-up. Rice would be the standard of comparison between the two. A good pass rusher would certainly allow them to drop eight into coverage. Cole ate up San Diego St when six (and sometimes less) was in coverage first half. A good barometer (final exam) for UH’s “exit interview” evaluation to conclude this season. Lots of time to “cram” before “finals”. Work.
Go Warriors. Jack Purchase is NBA material. I’m sure they sign Jack Purchase somewhere. He has the built. And Go Cole. He’s our man. He can do it. Hawai’i Bowl.
Defensively, they’ll need to be more aggressive versus La. Tech. They’ll probably see the run more often used. So they’ll need to be on the ball every play. #33 Penei Pavihi, 6-3, LB, he’ll need to be on a all time high. 13 tackles. This would give them a chance to win. So defense is important.
Conference teams all lost to their opponents, PAC 12, Big 12, Big 10 teams. So Cole cannot be honorable mention for the conference.
We cannot be chasing championships. 13-0 is chasing for championships. #4 or #3 RPI ranked. 8-5 is not championship caliber.

I think what Derek was pointing out was that despite being young, over matched, and inexperienced (some Coaches too) as the numbers exhibited, the Entire Program (including the early presence of Colt and Mouse; and the later “presence” of Vince Manuai) managed to persevere. Definitely a credit to all of them.
They never gave up and certainly appreciated the “Fan Support” by playing hard as they could and preparing best they could (especially defense technique adjustments made at bye week, I think we all appreciated the effort). And despite all the “noise” and doubters, managed to reach the Bowl Game. Maybe a little lucky some games but when you play hard “anything can happen”. I think you will find that you feel same as Derek does after all. I do.
Do you think Boise State can leapfrog Central Florida if the Broncos and Memphis wins?
Yet at some point, ‘booya, a Derek type will eventually outright state, “trust the coaches. Leave it up to the coaches.” To such types, same thing—leave it up to the coaches to number crunch all of that. Had as much odds against the Warriors this season and look at what happened. Winning season.
I’m sure coaching staff do not even bring ip sass when planning for games.

#48 Cappie: Boise (or Fresno St.) doesn’t even have to leap frog UCF to get to the NY6 Bowl. The rule is that the highest ranked G5 conference champion gets the bid. So if UCF loses, the MWC winner just has to be higher than Memphis (or any other G5 conference champ). They would go even if UCF is still ranked higher.
Hawaii Bowl tickets must be selling well and close to sell out ?? What’s available online is not very good seats. Will probably not go.

Congrats to the team, (players, coaches, staff) for a successful, for a winning season (8-5). Even sweeter when everyone, including local fans were predicting a 2-3 win season. It’s been some 7 years since the last regular season winning record – way too long of a drought. Hope the people in charge at Manoa are listening to Rolo regarding what will be needed to continue the upward climb. Rolo is not one to openly complain about what they don’t have, but I’m sure he has a list of areas that need improvement from facilities, training, meals, resources, COA, travel, etc. All of these things will be needed in order for UH to be competitive with the teams such as Fresno State, Boise State, Utah State, and even Reno.
Saw the ad for the full-time strength coach at UH. Salary is around $53,700 (APT Class B). Hmmm………
USU’s Matt Wells will become Texas Tech’s new coach and will likely take OC David Yost with him. Wells earned over $900,000 at USU and will make considerably more at a P5 School.

#59…the bowl people want to make the stadium look packed for TV. If they allows for fans to be scattered all over the stadium, it will look empty. There is also the situation of clean up after the game, hiring less ushers, and not having to open up bathrooms and concessions on the upper level. Less area to clean up, less expenses.
I can understand the bowl people doing this. They invested a lot of money to run this event and only have one shot to make money. It’s not like UH games where they have 15,000 season ticket holders to collect money from.
Go to the game,!!! You and your family/friends can truly put up with this for one game. It’s not like we go to bowl games a lot so when the opportunity presents itself, you should take advantage of it and go.
Enjoy the Warrior for the final time this season and a chance to see them go from 9 losses in one season to 9 wins the next.
Should have seen Army vs San Jose St on ESPNU. That stadium (Levi’s Stadium 68000 capacity) looked empty. Most of the fans were in a section right next to the Army sideline. Kind of embarrassing for ESPN I think. I can understand the concern. However they should reconsider and open up sections as necessary. The game is not on Christmas Eve plus it’s on a Saturday, so people may have the spare time. Might outsell Bruno Mars. (Well…maybe not right now, but sometime pretty soon. Be ready everybody). For Hawaii bowl, currently decent sideline seats (Mauka & Makai) not available. North end zone not available. In South End Zone, looks like orange section is designated as “General Admission”/Open Seating. Would you purchase a ticket not knowing where you will end up ? Blue section mostly not available, what is available are some seats in lower rows.
For the record, my friends and I have been season ticket holders for over 20+ years, and paying members of the Na Koa Football club. We don’t expect much and have not gotten much even during the Von Appen and Chow years where we endured but continued to support. It would have been nice to have a opportunity to purchase decent seats for a bowl game in Hawaii. In the past Hawaii Bowls, the blocked off areas in the lower sections were not as extensive as this year. I would bet that if Hawaii had to travel to a bowl game, UH would be begging for fans to travel to and offer tickets (sell) to the game……
And just to clarify, the term non sequitur refers to a conclusion that isn’t aligned with previous statements or evidence….for me, it’s the latter that is more concerning,
Season ticket holders had first crack at tickets. You missed the deadline so your seats got opened up to the public. You cannot blame others for your hesitation.
I know they emailed me my chance to buy early. I would not have gotten my seats since I sit in the red section during regular season but I did get an invite to by early.and find otther good seats.
I have no problem sitting in the endzone for just one game. Don’t understand the reluctance to attend just because you don’t get to sit where you want.
Would you not go to your favorite restaurant if they don’t give your your preferred seat? Would you skip a concert from your favorite band just because you cannot sit where you want?
It shouldn’t matter you are a long time season ticket holder. You are not entitled to anything. This is not UH’s business. It is run by ESPN and a separate entity.
I purchased my seats right after the conclusion of the San Diego State game. There weren’t many “good” sideline seats available, but there were a decent amount of 30 – 50 yard seats for the taking. I bought 4 in the 50 yard line section (KK). Kahuna is right. For bowl games, the early bird gets the worm. My sister has been buying Hawai’i Bowl tickets since its inception. They have first crack at seats and are now at the 50 yd line loge level. However, that means buying tickets even when UH is not playing.

Interesting article in today’s SA about moving ahead with new stadium plans. They envision having a facility with a 30,000 to 35.000 seating capacity. What does everybody think of that size? I feel it should be higher. What if we were asked to play football in PAC 12. Is the size of our new stadium a factor there? Would it be too small?

Nice looking Stadium but too small. There is more to consider than just UH Football as it stands in it’s current state. Have some vision. Think of the possibilities when combined with the rail. The Bruno Mars concert was an example of how important this decision is. Hawaii can be the premier destination for many events (better than Vegas for international functions), not only Mountain West Football.

better to build on the smaller size such as 30-35,000 seats? or, better build bigger such as the Stan Sheriff which was originally for 4,000 or 5,000 seats — those with better vision wanted and got a 10,000 seat arena — never looked back with the many sold-out crowds — just a few since the Wahine VB teams of years past

Mr. A-House, that’s why I said they should have used the TC Ching money to start on a new on-campus stadium. Wasted opportunity.
I believe the stadium size is fine. Even San Diego State’s new stadium plan have a similar capacity and San Diego have a bigger population than Oahu.
Pro Bowl is not coming back. Its not a viable option in the future. We not only have to pay them to come but the players are not even putting forth the effort to play hard. I don’t think it worth the effort to bring them back. Maybe better to get big name concerts like Hawaii are getting this year.
We have had BYU and Boise play here recently and we could not even reach 40,000. The era of 50,000 seats have past us by. I don’t see us every drawing 50,000 into Aloha Stadium anymore. Many have given up going and are watching on TV. Others have altogether given up watch football and are doing other things on Saturday night. I know because I have neighbors who used to go but now just stay home and watch videos, play video games or go to the movies.
Football tickets are expensive, going to the stadium is a hassle and the product itself is not always that great.
Its a brand new era and 35,000 should suffice.
Funny that all the proponents of an on campus stadium fail to realize there are not really that many students that actually live on campus. Last i read, only got about 3,500 beds on campus. Most students commute to campus. So the argument for an on campus stadium for this reason is short sited. Besides, when there are events at the Sheriff and at Les on the same night, traffic is terrible getting in and out. Imagine what would happen if you triple that car count. Also, where would you park? I could go on and on…

Ah, more bettah just build one 20,000 seat stadium. Going sound loud when da bugah is packed with 17,000 fans. Save $$$ on construction costs, too! Reduce the SSC arena to 5,000 like the original plan in the 1980s. Think “MANINI” and be realistic!

I like the stadium on campus idea, but where would the tailgating take place? Let’s build a place which would be a tailgater dream! Lots of trees and no porta-potties. It would be nice to have something with a light retractable roof to mitigate rains, for both sporting events and concerts. Remember the old Waikiki Theaters with the clouds on the ceiling? Let’s have a place that shouts “THIS IS HAWAI”I”. It won’t take a lot of extra costs, just a bold vision for our sense of place. Imagine entertainers or teams wanting to be here just because of our stadiums visual back drops.
It’s true that stadium capacities trend smaller these days, but I think if we ever hope to play in a higher level conference we should build bigger. Maybe more like 45K to 55K, but with upper levels closed for smaller events. The opportunity to have world class events here is very strong. MMA, music, dirt bike racing, soccer, rugby, pro-wrestling are just a few.
The new stadium will be built to serve our state for decades to come – imagine what the world will look like 30 years from now? Where would our new stadium fit into that world?

This is my wish for the New Stadium.
The New Stadium has to have a similar number of parking spaces as there is (or was as in 2007) now. The parking area has to be large (and level) enough to accommodate events such as carnivals, fairs, and a (slightly more “sensational” than current swap meet) high quality, multifaceted retail flea market. The grounds should have comfort stations, a good sized pavilion (similar to Waikiki Shell) and large volume restroom areas. The perimeter should have the ability to allow access to food trucks as well. These “amenities” would allow for possible year-round usage just for the “grounds” area itself and attract larger volume of pre-game attendees (non driving tailgaters) and tailgaters during the six to eight UH home games, possibly increasing the game’s attendance.
The Stadium itself should be able to seat at least 38000 fans. It should however be able to accommodate 45 to 50 thousand viewers via rental suites and viewing rooms. Luxury boxes and fully enclosed Luxury loge sections could be built and made available if a market for “Luxury” exists.
The idea is to profit through the year-round usage of the “grounds” area. With the completion of the rail this would have the potential be a premiere “Marketplace”. With food trucks (shave ice truck too), a produce (open market) section, a handmade crafts section, and some specialty retailers if possible (such as maybe H Zone, Reyn’s, HIC, T&C, Roxy, and Volcano eCigs for example) on top of the usual vendors selling Hawaii souvenirs and omiyage. The more attractive (to the vendors and to the public) the more profit for the State.
But the Stadium’s (actual venue) main purpose would be to accommodate stadium based concert tours year round (including Asian pop bands). Lots of opportunity for visiting tour “tourists”. As for football UH would be a vendor ideally, renting the Stadium (percentage fee?) for the 6 to 8 game home dates. MMA cards, FIBA International (Asia Host) Friendlies, Boxing cards, NFL preseason games (no Pro Bowl), and of course the Hawaii Bowl, which could have a better chance at 30000 fans regardless of Hawaii being one of the teams.
My hope is that the “powers that be” can imagine the possibilities and not restrict themselves (and all of the State) because of the lack of “vision”. It is a divisive, debatable, and controversial subject with a lot to contemplate. Ultimately the decision will be irreversible (unless expansion is in the planning) so they have to do what they think is best. UH Football will be on the rise either way. But even with a “perfect” stadium it would still be hard to get invited into the PAC 12. Maybe get chance? IDK, just got to start beating them on the field.

Hizzoner thinks the most important ting about the parking lot is that it will be under water due to global warming so he is not going to give up a dime to make it.
If you can clear that hurdle, Top Gov thinks if there is a parking lot, the attendants should be paid $25 per hour so the parking rates will be astronomical.

Dave Aranda mentioned as a possible candidate for the USU job. He may have to take a paycut to take a head coach, as being the highest paid FBS assistant. Read that USU will likely increase the HC salary to $1 million.
Would feel better if they build a 38,000 seat stadium with an additional 3,000 – 4,000 in luxury suites (total = over 40,000) modeled after CSU’s stadium.
Parking is and will always be a problem in Hawaii. Simply put, cost of land is and will always be prohibitive. Aloha should have gone hi-rise prkg a long time ago to help attendance and build stuff around it. Also, If attendance was ok they would be talking about preserving Aloha. Before Aloha gets inundated with salt water we will all be maki, die , dead. Also can ask UH geologists what lies ahead for the area- part of due diligence.
Forgot, problem is we got no other stadium to use while Aloha was to be renovated or vice-versa. Well, they could put up 30,000 seat bleachers at Waipio Soccer field. Heh Heh !
