Hawaii in, plays Baylor

The Hawaii women’s volleyball team is back in the NCAA tournament.
UH (18-8) got the announcement Sunday on the ESPNU selection show. As you can see below, the response to the program making its 26th straight postseason was emphatic:

The top four seeds are Stanford, Minnesota, BYU and Illinois.
It’s Hawaii vs. Baylor hosted by No. 15 seed Oregon.
The Wahine play the first game on Thursday.

Every year, I watch the tournament selection shows for men and women’s basketball. Teams that regularly make the tournament can have off years and still make the field.
And I think or shout: “How can?”
Conversely, there are people on the continent right now saying the same thing about Hawaii in gramatically correct English.

Re 3: It’s 1/Stanford, 2/Minnesota, 3/Illinois, and 4/BYU. Texas drops to the 5th seed.
Fascinating pairings: Hawaii is in the Oregon sub-regional along with Baylor. Shocker is that the 9-team Big 12 has only two teams in the Big Dance: Texas (AQ) and Baylor (which meets UH).
But the biggest shocker to me is that the 10-team WCC has 5 representatives — the top 5 in the WCC’s Final Standings: BYU (AQ), Pepperdine, San Diego (which takes on Cal Poly), St. Mary’s, and Loyola Marymount. Correct me if I am wrong.

In the world of women’s volleyball, is the WCC considered a major conference? Kansas and Kansas State were only three games above .500, but normally, conference affiliation outweighs a mediocre won/loss record. In other sports, three games above .500 is not a bridge too far, especially baseball. One season, UCLA got in while being only one game above .500.
To see Loyola Marymount picked over the two Kansas teams blows my mind.

31. It depends on the year. As I wrote before, the WCC and ACC are considered either the taillights of the major volleyball conferences or the headlights of the mid-major volleyball conferences. Why the NCAA doesn’t release its supercomputer’s conference power ratings on its listings for team stats is a puzzler.
I agree with you re: Loyola Marymount. Only reason I can see them being chosen is that they ended BYU’s undefeated record this week. Can hardly wait to see LM’s rpi when it is released tomorrow, assuming that the NCAA RPI will be released on 11/26 (Monday).
As for the Big 12, I predicted in the post just before this that the Big 12 was looking at 2~4 reps in the Championship tournament. Kansas St. was so weird with a rpi of 36 (what the rpi was when the Committee looked at it I don’t know) but with a 8th-place finish of the 9-team Big 12 Conference Final Standing.

Haha…the team’s reaction is priceless. Doing their thing just minding their own business then hear their name….stopped….looked up….and pandemonium. Most was not even watching the pairing. Mentioned of “HAWAII” got their attention. LOL
I was surprised that Hawaii gets to play in a lower seed bracket than Cal Poly, #15 Oregon vs. #11 USC. So the NCAA actually gave Hawaii an easier subregional than UH! Thus there is a greater chance that Hawaii could advance out of its subregional than Cal Poly. UH fans should be happy while Cal Poly fans will not be. I guess this was done for geographical reasons as USC is closer to Cal Poly than Oregon, while it doesn’t matter where Hawaii is sent to the west coast, the distance is roughly the same by air.
However, the regional itself will be tougher for Hawaii if they make it that far than Cal Poly as Hawaii is sent to #2 regional (Illinois) while Cal Poly is sent to #3 Illinois.
I was also surprised that BYU was seeded fourth while ranked #2 and before that #1 for most of the season. That last loss must have hurt them a lot. I wonder what would have been BYU’s seeding had it been undefeated.
#2 or #3 doesn’t matter much. Minnesota and Illinois could have easily swap places.
We played Minnesota 2 years ago and we played Illinois last season. Both could smoke us and Cal Poly so both UH and Cal Poly need to bring their “A” game every day.

In men’s basketball, people complain that Duke gets coddled by the tournament selection committee year after year. Is there an analogue for women’s volleyball?
Re 41: Both USC and Oregon tied for 2nd place in the Pac-12, both swept each other as visitors in conference play, both are hosting a sub-regional, but Oregon finished with more MO (winning 4 of its last 5) than did USC (losing 2 before ending conference play with a win over UCLA). Both Big West teams will be in the fight of their lives in either sub-regional.
But obviously you have to get by Round 1 to get to Round 2, and Cal Poly will be the favorite when it tangles with San Diego (3rd place finisher in the WCC but with a MO finish of 2 losses in a row) while Hawaii will be the underdog when it clashes with Baylor (2nd place finisher in the Big 12 with a MO finish of 7 wins and 1 loss to Texas).
Had Cal Poly been facing Baylor in Round 1, Mustang fans would be posting NCAA conspiracy theories everywhere.
41-43 I have to add a correction to my own statement first. I mentioned Illinois twice when I meant #2 Minnesota. As for the other two comments, you are correct in asserting that there is not much difference between Minnesota and Illinois. They could easily defeat UH and Cal Poly respectively should they meet. Still, I think that UH has a better chance of making it out of their subregional than Cal Poly in its own respective subregional. I could be wrong and both could be in or out.
According to the latest published RPI (as of 11/18)….
* highest ranked RPI not to get in was Kansas at RPI 36…though after 11/18, they lost at Iowa ST (74) and Oklahoma (75)
*all teams with the exception of Princeton (49) and UCLA (35- but losing final record) higher than Hawaii (50) got in. Could have helped that Princeton lost to Long Beach St. in Towson, Maryland on Sept. 6.
*LMU must have really benefited from beating BYU (only game after 11/18), as they were RPI 76 as of 11/18 (swept by Pepperdine on the 18th).
Good to see UCSB along with UCI in the NIVC. Since I noticed Wichita St in with a losing record 14-17, I’m assuming UCLA did not want to be in the NIVC, along with Kansas and probably K-State.
