Warrior Beat: Hey, ’19

Yesterday’s pledge from a former 4-star athlete — back/receiver Melquise Stovall — further boosts the Warriors’ 2019 recruiting class.

Stovall was at California for two years before enrolling at Riverside City College this semester. Stovall, who can run 40 yards in 4.5 seconds, was rated as the nation’s No. 6 all-purpose back as a Paraclete High senior in 2016. He had committed, then de-committed to USC, before signing with Cal. UH has first-burn knowledge of Stovall. He scored a TD against the Warriors in the 2016 opener in Australia.

Stovall joins these commitments:

> Steven Fiso, athlete, Faga’itua High (American Samoa)

> Zach Daniel, quarterback, The Kinkaid School (Houston)

> Tiger Peterson, linebacker, Kamehameha Schools

> Kaimana Wa’a, offensive lineman, Crescent Valley High (Oregon)

> Thomas Wade, offensive lineman, San Clemente High (Calif.)

> Jonah Panoke, wideout, Saint Louis School

>Michael Washington, receiver, Monrovia High (Calif.)

Can you help me reach my goal by chipping in $25 online with the last below link?
    Got this email from Rolo:
    Tom,
Received your email from my mom. Can’t tell you how thankful we are for what you have done throughout the years. I would like to pledge $500 to the account. Please put a $50 in the name of all the assistant coaches, I will let them know. Appreciate it.

Can you help me reach my goal by making a $25 donation to the UH Foundation Fund I created for UH Football recruiting–see below link.
If 2000 fans do this, we will raise $50,000. So far, I got 681 donors ($17,025), so only 1319 more donors to go–each donor spot represents $25.

After donating, text me your name to 415-324-0585 or email your receipt to: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com so I can add it below (if you don’t mind):

Isn’t Scott McLeod a greyshirt also coming to campus in January

  9. H-Man November 13, 2018 7:30 pm

Is WR Scott McLeod part of the 2019 class?
A very similar name, Melquan Stovall WR from Junipero Serra committed to Nevada; confused me at first, but he’s a different player.
Counting the greyshirts and Stovall, the commit count Is up to 10. Not bad. Actually pretty good with talent at WR.

  10. Kahuna November 13, 2018 7:41 pm

I think the kid who committed to Nevada is Melquise’s younger brother.

  11. Randy D November 13, 2018 11:53 pm

One man’s discard in another man’s treasure. We can’t get players at the top, we have to wait for them to drop down in price.

  13. cappie the dog November 14, 2018 5:15 am

turfwar- Thank you for commenting on my post.

I also think women’s basketball should split up Division I into a FBS and FCS system.

When a low mid-major like Hawaii faces Top 25 competition, both teams don’t look like they’re in the same division.

Vince Goo sprung the occasional upset, most memorably, upending nationally ranked Virginia led by Dawn Staley, but as Bob Dylan says, “Things Have Changed”.

More than any other sport, it has been my observation that the gap between the haves and have-nots is widest in women’s basketball.

  14. Andrew November 14, 2018 8:56 am

That game vs Cal seems like it was ages ago already. That’s a nice get for the offense. I’m guessing it’s pretty much an assumed thing that Ursua will be leaving after this year?

  15. jeezy33 November 14, 2018 10:00 am

Early signing day for basketball. Shocker to noone that Ganot hasn’t signed anyone.

  16. turfwar November 14, 2018 11:07 am

With the caliber of players Ganot recruits it’s probably a good thing he didn’t sign anyone. Let the next coach bring in his own recruits. I mean we made North Texas look like North Carolina. I walked out at half time and am pretty sure I’m giving up my season tickets as it seems to me that Matlin is all in with Ganot despite less than 3000 in the stands nightly. I think a program like North Texas that showcases the talent and coaching we saw last week is not too much to ask of for our Hawaii teams. Don’t believe Ganot is the guy who can take us there. And now we have to look forward to facing N.Arizona and Hilo? A waste of time and money.

  17. jeezy33 November 14, 2018 11:17 am

    16. Ganot is arguably the worst basketball recruiter I’ve seen since I’ve been alive. Bob Nash probably worst HC. Ganot is a really good coach though so Hawaii will be competitive enough for him to keep his job going forward. Just not sure I’m going to waste my time and money to attend many games when his brand of basketball is very boring compared to the coached with Gib Arnolds players. I don’t know if he’s just lazy when it comes to recruiting because he puts all his energy to game planning or is his ego just so big that he thinks he can develop these “high character kids” into legit players on the basketball court. He makes it a point that he won’t recruit these inner city talent kids that might butt heads with him at times. Was coaching Rod Bobbitt that difficult? I mean it seemed to be worth it at the end of the season. He just doesn’t wanna go after kids like that. I think Ganot needs to put his ego aside and realize not all kids coming from low income neighborhoods are always raised right and he might need to develop men in the process of his coaching.

  18. NorthShoreFan November 14, 2018 11:36 am

I read many opinions of UH coaches. We offer differing opinions and that is good. Many of the coaches we’ve not agreed with have moved on to bigger and better programs. Be careful of what we ask for…we may get it.

  19. Maddog50 November 14, 2018 11:43 am

This week an awful lot is on the line against UNLV. Warriors are gonna have to play intense physical all out football. Gonna have to be almost mistake free and some leaders have to emerge, Looking for a few tweaks in the lineup on both sides of the ball and a few offensive wrinkles. Does not matter who they start at QB our effort has to be at a high level. Hoping we get that lucky 7 for a lot of reasons! GoWarriors!!!!

  20. islandman November 14, 2018 12:24 pm

    16. & 17. So far, tickets issued for the 3 home basketball games ranged from 5401 to 5037.
As for the player 17 mentions or any player, you need the players to graduate or your team APR will go down. If it goes down too much, you may get sanctions imposed on the team. Also, you don’t need a player suspended for 1 game or whatever it turns out to be because he argues with the opposing coach on the sidelines. And you want players who will want to listen to you all of the time.

  21. suckkabooya November 14, 2018 12:31 pm

Ganot is using the Saint Mary’s blueprint. Not unexpected. He also has Riley Wallace DNA (figuratively) so there may be an international quality to Ganot’s process. He can win with the right pieces, we’ve seen that. Was clunky vs North Texas for sure. I think it was just a bad night. Can shake off. Ganot has to find a “tough minded” rotation to use when things go “off the rails”, especially when it happens so early, just to re-set the confidence and competitiveness. He can do it. Probably harder to do it here but Wallace did it. I think Ganot can too. Two more athletic wings maybe . Can do.

  22. Jeezy33 November 14, 2018 12:45 pm

    20. I didn’t say to recruit guys with no grades or Joston Thomas type headaches. I just said you need to take a chance on some kids who might not have come from “great families” like Eran always mentions. You might have to recruit a talented kid from a low income neighborhood who might need to grow up in college. I’m not saying to recruit 5 of them. it’s hard to get into Uh anyway so whoever you recruit needs good enough grades to get here.
Rod Bobbitt from Oakland or AC Carter from Atlanta are examples of guys who might not have grown up in the same middle class household like Ganot. But you need a guy like them with a bulldog to lead these other kids you bring in.

Right now, Ganot top PG the last couple of years has been a rich walk on from Texas that Gib brought in.

  23. islandman November 14, 2018 1:01 pm

    19. Agree. UNLV can run the ball, their QB can throw enough and their defense stopped SDSU’s running game pretty good.
I don’t agree with a radio host who said he thinks that UNLV’s win last week was more that SDSU is not that good this year and UH has a good chance vs SDSU too. Maybe we have a chance but they are a good team.
He says that because they lost to UNLV, saying the Aztecs lost their #1 QB and running back or something.
Checking the stats, their other QB Agnew was running the team when SDSU beat Arizona St and Boise St. and in most of the other wins. Also, QB Chapman has come back and is playing now .
RB Washington has come back too. The other RB’s are good also.
