50th anniversary of ’68 Olympic teams, plus NLI notes

The 1968 USA women's volleyball team.

For history buffs, USAV had a story about the reunion of the 1968 Olympic volleyball teams in Mexico City. Hawaii was well presented by players from here and some who would make their home here.

On the women’s side, Bobbie Perry, Fanny Hopeau, Sharon Peterson.
On the men’s team, Pete Velaso, Jon Stanley, Tom Haine, Butch May.
Read the story here.

The 1968 USA men’s volleyball team.

Been posting these commits at various times. IMHO the Wahine will be good but young next year
Here’s the 5 that are expected to sign NLI on the 14th:
Braelyn Akana 6-0 FR M/OH Honolulu, HI Kamehameha Schools
Amber Igiede 6-3 FR M Baton Rouge, LA St. Michael the Archangel Warriors
Riley Wagoner 6-0 FR OH Dublin, OH Dublin Coffman HS Rocks
Tiffany Westerberg 6-3 FR M Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada Maple Ridge Secondary School Ramblers
Hanna Hellvig 6-3 FR OH, FalköpingSweden Ållebergsgymnasiet
Just got off the phone with Igiede’s coach. The Warriors lost in 5 tonight in the state semifinals. He said that Igiede will remind folks of Danielle Scott (Long Beach State). A big, physical kid, he said.
And mentioned on previous thread, former SandBow Lea Monkhouse has transferred to UCLA.
It was announced today by UCLA To read click here:

OMG Lea Monkhouse to UCLA Wow tough one. Good luck to her.

  2. Rabbit ears November 9, 2018 5:10 pm

Wow Riley Wagoner grew 9″ in ten minutes

  3. Kahuna November 9, 2018 5:14 pm

ALL RIGHT!!!….We finally got some real size coming in!!

6-9 Riley Wagoner will be a stud. Hehehe

I know typo….just having fun! Love this class. Looks like everybody coming in are from winning programs. Also very athletic with Wagoner being an All State in volleyball and basketball while Hellvig plays indoor and beach for Sweden. Brae can play OH or MB and Idiege is reported to be able to touch 10-3. Got a bunch of winner!!!

  4. H-Man November 9, 2018 5:31 pm

Looks like a very good class. I like the “international” flavor of the class. One each from Sweden and Canada. One each from Ohio and Louisiana. They’re international right? None from California. And one local girl. Add to returnees, shake and mix = winning combo.

  5. Kahuna November 9, 2018 5:46 pm

This is approach I hope the UH coaches will take from now on. We cannot limit ourselves to recruiting only Cali kids. There are powerhouse teams out there with ZERO Cali kids so it’s not like we have to have them on our team.

California is natural recruting ground for us because of the conference we are in and the close proximity to Hawaii but we also in a dogfight to get the upper tier girls so I rather we go find talent elsewhere instead of settling for projects.

We have had very good luck with Canada and I hope we will keep the pipeline open for the future.

  6. Cindy Luis November 9, 2018 5:47 pm

    1. All Hall said about Monkhouse leaving (reported a few months ago) was that she wasn’t happy being in Hawaii.
    2. 3. yes, a typo. thanks for pointing it out.
    4. There may be more. I only know of 5. and you never know if there will be walk-ons next year. Assuming Burns doesn’t return as a grad student, they lose 7 of their 15. 8 + 5 = 13. Wahine usually carry 17 or 18.

  7. cappie the dog November 9, 2018 5:52 pm

    Louisiana.
    Ohio.
    British Columbia.
    Sweden.

Hopefully none of these recruits get homesick and decommit.

  10. H-Man November 9, 2018 8:22 pm

Wow, with only 13 projected players for next season (8+5), Wahine has more scholarships to offer? Or only room for walk-ons? Could use a setter with only Iosia returning.

  11. Cindy Luis November 9, 2018 8:29 pm

    10. just doing the math. believe they have 2 scholarships left. They do need another setter.

  12. Bleachercoach November 9, 2018 8:56 pm

Yes I am very hopeful and looking forward to the recruits. I saw videos of Igiede, Westerberg, and Hellvig
All of them are 6’3″ with good size and “hammer-type arms”…They all look very athletic. Helivig is really athletic and gets really up there. I know it’s probably my imagination but her entire torso (up to her waist-line) was above the net on some of her Kills.
Wagoner is also athletic but not so tall…6’0” might be stretching it unless she grew more. Brae Akana comes from super athletic genes and will become even better as she mature. Maybe , next year Iosia can focus on her setting and not need her on the PINS….The blessing is that she can become a Setter 1st option/Attacker 2nd option…It could prove to be lethal since she’s confident and good getting so much work as an OH this year. The biggest question to an all-star Frosh team is chemistry? I like this recruiting class very much

  13. Cindy Luis November 9, 2018 9:54 pm

    12. UH will go back to a 5-1 next season. They only went 6-2 out of necessity.
Don’t see Akana as a setter.
What Igiede’s coach told me was that she hits a heavy ball and has given 5-6 opposing players concussions during her career.

  14. AdmrVT November 9, 2018 11:20 pm

#6, 10, 11: I believe they will have only 4 scholarship returnees (5 if Burns returns), not including Krug & Ross, who are not on scholarship (I believe). Since volleyball is a 12 scholarship “head count” sport, they should have 3 open scholarships (2 if Burns returns) after the expected recruits sign their LOI on Wed.

  15. H-Man November 10, 2018 9:06 am

Thank you Cindy for update on available scholarships. Too bad Liliana Light decided to go elsewhere. But, never know what’s over the horizon. I have confidence this coaching staff will find a good one.

  16. iGrokSpock November 10, 2018 2:06 pm

I don’t think that the Wahine has had a “heavy ball” hitter since at least Kee Williams. She could put some dents into the floor. Can’t wait to see Igiede.

  17. iGrokSpock November 10, 2018 2:08 pm

Hey Cindy, I think that Bleachercoach was referring to Iosia focusing on setting next year, and not to Akana.

  18. iGrokSpock November 10, 2018 2:13 pm

I informally met Bobbie Perry many years ago at some USVBA volleyball tournament that I was playing in and she was a referee, and Pete Velasco in his Lokahi Volleyball club summer program. Both were classy people.

  19. Perry Fan November 10, 2018 3:25 pm

Bobby Perry has not stopped being a leader/coach/teacher.

  20. Perry Fan November 10, 2018 3:26 pm

Bobby Perry is still doing great things in Hawaii.

  21. Big Island Volleyball Fan November 10, 2018 4:55 pm

Cal Poly defeated UC Irvine with three identical scores of 25-23.. I bet that UH fans who watched this match were tense to the max as all sets came down to the wire. Well, with a new lineup next year, UH will be able to challenge Cal Poly more but I wouldn’t bet on who could win the Big West title next year. We still don’t know who signed up for Cal Poly till next week.

  22. OrbitalRipZ November 10, 2018 4:56 pm

The Fat Lady is about to sing. Cal Poly sweeps Irvine, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23.

If Irvine had pulled off its biggest upset of the season, it would have put Hawaii not only back in contention but in the driver’s seat for the “automatic qualifier” to the Dance. But Irvine, like every other BWC team, had no answers for Torrey Van Winden — a legit AA. And thus slams the last chance for the 2018 version of the Rainbow Wahine to “represent.”

For those of you who are unclear about the Bows’ chances for an “at-large bid” based on its RPI, the NCAA spells it out here: https://www.ncaa.com/news/volleyball-women/article/2018-11-08/ncaa-volleyball-teams-high-rpi-rankings-tournament

And for those who want to hear the magnificent pipes of the Fat Lady, here she is at last (copy and paste in your browser): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-bXjK_5C8g

    16. I assume you stopped watching in the 2000s when Kim Willoughby was on the team?

Regarding the recruits, we can only hope these incoming players can help improve this team. Let’s not hype them up just yet.

  25. Rodney Okita November 11, 2018 9:56 am

Hope that Kate Lang a 2020 setter verbal commit gets better during HS so that she can contribe immediately! Wish that the staff give Janelle more serving OPT since she is more consistent than Rika!!

  26. Kahuna November 11, 2018 10:13 am

I don’t think fans are any different from the coaches who recruited these kids. The coaches looked at these kids and feel excited about them too. If the coaches are not,,,,then why recruit them?

The only different is the coaches know more about them then we fans do but in terms of excitement about the future players, I have no doubt Robyn and her staff is chopping at the bit to get them into the gym and coach them up.

It’s human nature to be excited when something new and exciting is seen on the horizon.

The way sports work is we fans hype up our players while the coaches do the hard work and get them to the level fans wish for.

I’m sure Robyn is glad the fans feel excited. The alternative is to say little or nothing about the incoming players…… which then can be interpreted as the players coming in are average and don’t deserved mention.

  27. islandman November 11, 2018 10:53 am

    22. Thanks for the article on the RPI.

  28. H-Man November 11, 2018 6:17 pm

Riley Wagoner – Jr and Sr Season Stats
    Season SP K K/S Kill % Att E Hit %
    2018 79 378 4.8 45.5 830 68 .373
    2017 89 456 5.1 47.1 968 85 .383

Riley’s high school numbers look good.

  29. Hot November 12, 2018 4:28 am

    26. Some fans have unrealistic expectations of these recruits. Of course the coaches see potential in the kids they recruit, but how many of these kids that fans overhype actually pan out? Read some comments in other boards, and you’ll some of these fans proclaiming these recruits to be starters next year. Another recent example was the hype on Shaney Lipscomb and Sophia Howling.

  30. Cindy Luis November 12, 2018 10:32 am

Lipscomb and Howling left for very reasons. Both very good players, not the right fit. Think the better term is It didn’t work out. Not that they didn’t pan out.
