Saturday’s game — actually, halftime of Saturday’s game — is the halfway point of the Warriors’ 13-game regular season. With Wyoming as another rugged opponent, head coach Nick Rolovich is hoping that several developing players, particularly on the defensive line, will be ready if needed.

“You want to make sure you’re still growing your roster as far as developing your players and getting them ready,” Rolovich said following today’s two-hour workout. “This is the time when guys have to start standing up and stepping up if this is their opportunity this time of year. Guys needs to be ready to play.”

Rolovich noted that Kendall Hune, who joined in July, has earned a significant role in the defensive-line rotation.

“You saw Kendall Hune get better through the first part of the season,” Rolovich said. “Guys like Justus Tavai have to be ready to play. You can never have enough defensive linemen.”

    RE: Boolakanaka

Yup, that’s why we can’t have nice things…

  4. haka October 4, 2018 12:26 pm

Kendall played well against SJ. I noticed Mataafa also got in the mix. We need Justus to step up along with Russell. These are big bodies that we will definitely need to shore up our D-line depth.

Great position to be in at the halfway point of the season. The chips have fallen our way, but we now need to control our destiny with all phases of the game raising their level of play!

    Referring to yesterdays post:

I know Kaimana plays rush end for us, but I think he would project to the NFL as a 4-3 Outside linebacker. 3-4 outside backers and rush ends are making all the money these days but guys Kaimana’s size are doing very well for themselves on Sundays.

    Lavonte David: 6′-1/2″ 233 lbs
Telvin Smith: 6′-3″, but only 215 lbs
    Thomas Davis: 6′-1″, 235 lbs
    Shaq Thompson: 6′-0″, 230 lbs
    Mychal Kendricks: 5′-11″, 240 lbs
    Myles Jack: 6′-1″, 240 lbs
    Darron Lee: 6′-1″, 233 lbs

All these guys are “undersized”….and all of these guys are top 15 4-3 outside linebackers in the NFL.

Kaimana needs to get as much on film as he possibly can, and when his pro day comes I can tell you this, if he pushes 225 at least 15 reps, and runs a sub 4.8 40 yard dash I guarantee he’ll get NFL tryouts.

He runs a sub 4.7 in the 40 and I guarantee you he’ll have a job.

Zzzzz arguing amongst ourselves on a blog designed to support UH Football… tsigh.

Happy to hear that Coach is focused on depth.
Play together as one. Live Aloha as one.
Good for all. All for good.

Outstanding job by KK thus far …need to create more depth on d line …Kendall stepping up in last game, be great to see Justus Tavai & D. Russell start contributing as well! Live Aloha/Play Warrior!!!

  11. haka October 4, 2018 2:54 pm

The pure joy of the Hawaii fans when the Warriors went up into the stands after the game is, well, pure ALOHA! Absolutely love it! Dats wat its all about baybee! #livealohaplaywarrior

  12. Old School Dave October 4, 2018 3:28 pm

Hope the UH Administrators are not taking an attitude of:

“Why must we increase coaches salaries and improve the facilities? It hasn’t helped at CSU!’

Believe that Coach Wagner encountered the same attitude after winning the WAC and Holiday Bowl in 92. The rest is history.

  13. iGrokSpock October 4, 2018 3:28 pm

One thing that bugs me (besides the cockaroaches hea that ST sometimes gets to swat) is when Miano refers to Kaimana as KK. This was since last season. Had at least one mistaken identity so far this year (I forget which game). When I reviewed the play on DVR I only see #96 make the play, not the older, soldier brother. Thanks to KK by the way, for his service to our country.

I have no idea who the person is who keeps messing with blog, I can only pray for whomever it is.

The bigger picture is this: Why would you want to denigrate and disregard the hard work of the of the UH Football Warriors? These are good people who sacrifice much to represent you, me and all of their fans and family across the country and world. This blog is the only community for many of their family members and friends to enjoy each others’ company. This is their turf so to speak. Do you really care about that? This is the only public forum for UH fans. It’s sad that you don’t seem to understand or care about any of that. You steal the joy of the tens of thousands who read here. If you can’t help yourself, please, and I mean this with all the compassion I can muster, get help.

I bear no animosity to you, I pray for you, and hope you can find peace with yourself. God bless and keep you always. I have named no names here – you know who you are. Live aloha.

  17. haka October 4, 2018 4:15 pm

    Wikipedia…
The Paniolo Trophy was the trophy that went to the winner of the game. Paniolo is a Hawaiian word meaning “cowboy”,[1] and the trophy featured a bronze cowboy on horseback, twirling a lariat. The trophy was donated to the two schools by the Wyoming Paniolo Society, a group of Hawaii residents with Wyoming roots.[2]However, neither team was able to locate the original Paniolo Trophy before the rivalry was reinstated;[3][4][5] this led to a new replacement trophy being created based on photographs of the original;[6] 2018 the Warriors will get the trophy back!

  22. Da Punchbowl Kid October 4, 2018 4:35 pm

I’m getting old, dear burro. It makes me more prayerful. You gonna be at the pa’ina on Saturday? I wish there was someplace to get good pipikaula. I’ll prolly bring sushi. lol! It’ll be good sushi though. Pipikaula sushi?

  23. Da Punchbowl Kid October 4, 2018 5:00 pm

I have it! A “Na Koa” sushi platter from you know where, and a side of Time’s mellow pipikaula! He Hawai’i kakou!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

DPK: Mr. Multiple Personality has a name, and several folks know who he is. Like you, and as a psych major, I have compassion for the man. That said, I think he’s beyond trying to reason with because he either can’t, or doesn’t, appreciate what anyone is trying to convey to him. Even da rubbah slippa hasn’t dissuaded him.
Yes, it’s sad what he does to the blog and Stephen’s patience. Perhaps it’s best not to correspond with this guy. Ignore him, and let Stephen and the SA ITT guys deal with him. Too bad there’s no “ignore” option.

  25. Da Punchbowl Kid October 4, 2018 5:21 pm

Mahalo, Clyde. I figured it was worth a try.

  26. Old School Dave October 4, 2018 6:28 pm

Lead sports story on KHON is on Alabama’s QB for some 2:00 mins. Next story was a 30 second blurb of something like, “Oh yeah, UH is playing Wyoming this week and their QB is not bad, either.”

How about more profiles and interviews with UH players? Just a thought.

Let’s go Warriors! Beat Wyoming and go 6-1 (3-0)!!

  27. SteveM October 4, 2018 7:38 pm

    RE: #17
Boolakanaka — you got to be better too.
But, hey, if you ever need an alibi…

…and as clyde said, it is best to ignore until ST and the “thwack” crew does maintenance. I vaguely recall there is a background story here but any publicity will exacerbate the situation. This is not new or original. Move on. Do not feed the trolls.

  28. cappie the dog October 4, 2018 7:38 pm

islandman- I am absolutely devastated. I’m a little foggy on the year, but Hawaii was at Fresno State(WAC Tournament), a semifinal game, I think, and late in the game, Mike McIntyre and a Bulldog player dove for a loose ball at the half court line. The ref blew the whistle on McIntyre which propelled Fresno State into overtime and eventual win.

It was such a horrible call.

I never saw Hawaii compete like that.

In defeat, it is the best game in Riley Wallace’s career.

    RIP, indeed.

  29. haka October 4, 2018 7:47 pm

The Wyoming defense will be tough. We all remember their safety..he’s good. I think this should be the game that Cole takes it up a notch and starts to pump fake and look’em off. He should also fake passing and running better after handing off when in RPO plays. Play it out. Let the theatrics hold them for that split second more. It’s fine tuning. It just may be the difference between fourth down and touchdown! Go China!

  30. amela October 4, 2018 7:51 pm

You can find savich in the north end zone yellow section by himself cheering for himself, lol.

  31. cappie the dog October 4, 2018 7:54 pm

New Order played Maui last night.

“Vanishing Point” is on their set list.

    I’m psyched.

They’re going to play “Love Will Tear Us Apart”.

This is the best song of the eighties.

  32. JesseJames October 4, 2018 8:30 pm

#26… Old School Dave… Agree. While we always support the Hawaii boys (and girls) in their mainland endeavors, we need to promote and focus more on UH…da home team.

Even 1420 on the AM often talks about the boys playing on the mainland…and bypass the UH kids

  33. suckkabooya October 4, 2018 11:35 pm

The defense has more to prove than Cole does (my opinion). They have had shaky CB iso coverage all season long, And the guy responsible for the over the top safety help was a linebacker last year. You can tell Batoon wants to do all kinds of inventive “stuff” with his fronts and packages but a lot depends on the ability to cover for at least five seconds. Every single game (it’s hard to believe but EVERY single game) this season the coverage broke down somewhere (anywhere not only corners) at critical times. Once they figure out how solve the problems, Batoon can tinker with all his “stuff”. The secondary has to “make a play”. They can do it. They gotta do it. Go Defense! Go Warriors!

  34. Maddog50 October 5, 2018 1:44 am

Wyoming will be our biggest test so far. They play hard tough power football on offense and function very well on D. The offensive game is squarely on the OL to neutralize the front 7 of Wyoming. Obviously they are gonna come full throttle a fterlast weeks disappointing showing. Warriors gonnahave to get up early and stay up. Hopefully we get their offense off the field early and force the back up punter to kick. Starter is out and he kicked once against Boise and it wasn’t pretty. Warriors need to put up 35 on O to win this one-GoWarriors!!!!!

  35. haka October 5, 2018 4:26 am

    Yawn

  36. Maddog50 October 5, 2018 5:16 am

There appears to be no solution-

  37. Maddog50 October 5, 2018 5:49 am

Would not be surprised at few wrinkles tomorrow. One might be on D with a more traditional 4-3 kind of look. Coach Rolovich mentioned Justus Tavai getting himself ready to contribute. WYO plays a lot of double TE and utilizes a FB. To me they most closely resemble SDSU on offense. Screens and flairs will come into play. Gotta come out with flaired nostrils and play downhill!

  38. A-House October 5, 2018 7:27 am

is Max Hendrie in the mix to gain playing time on the DL?

    still a rush-end?

  39. H-Man October 5, 2018 7:40 am

Key tomorrow – Hawaii has to sustain drives. Not worried about our defense. Special teams concern me. But in the end, Warriors win. I previously posted Hawaii 35 Cowboys 14. I’ll stick with that prediction.

  40. Da Punchbowl Kid October 5, 2018 8:29 am

The biggest test so far, these Cowboys. Warriors have had other tests and still have just one loss. The wins won’t come any easier, they will just get sweeter.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    Live aloha. Play WARRIOR!!!

  41. haka October 5, 2018 8:40 am

I know this team will meet every challenge with preparedness and confidence. They will fear not the outcome, but will compete with everything they have to the very end. They will visualize the success of the process and see the future. Play smart. Play fast. Play hard. Play Warrior!
