Warrior Beat: UH vs. Duquesne

The Warriors arrive for homecoming game/Photo by Stephen Tsai

Hawaii surged from a 14-0 deficit to win for the fourth time Im five games season. Cole McDonald threw 5 TD passes in 42-21 win over Duquesne.

—————-

Cole McDonald throws 7 yards to John Ursua for a 42-21 UH lead with 2:13 to play.

It was McDonald’s fifth scoring pass of the game.

* * * * *

Duquesne won’t go away.

Daniel Parr throws a 10-yard scoring pass to Kellon Taylor to close the Dukes to 35-21 with 6:11 to play.

* * * * *

Cole McDonald tosses 1-yard scoring pass to Dakota Torres to extend UH lead to 35-14 with 7:48 to play.

Torres had practiced at linebacker the past two weeks after opening the season at slotback. But he was used in the so-called Jumbo package. He ran a version of a pick-and-roll for the TD.

* * * * *

Duquesne will have the ball at its 45, second-and-6, to open the fourth quarter. Warriors still lead, 28-14.

* * * * *

Fred Holly rushes 2 yards for a TD to extend UH’s lead to 28-14 with 10:32 left in the third quarter.

The drive was set up after Duquesne QB Daniel Parr’s helmet was dislodged on a scramble. Parr exited, per NCAA rules, and his replacement, Brett Brumbaugh was intercepted by cornerback Zach Wilson.

* * * * *

The loooooongest first half comes to an end with the Warriors ahead, 21-14.

The Warriors missed a chance to extend the lead when McDonald threw too high to a crossing John Ursua on a fourth-down play with 25 seconds left in the first half.

Quick stats:

McDonald 18-of-26 for 206 yards, 3 TDs.

Cedric Byrd 7 catches, 55 yards, 1 TD

* * * * *

In the ol’ switch-a-roo, on first=and-goal from the 2, slotback John Ursua motioned behind center Taaga Tuulima — just as he did last week, when he scored on a sneak. This time, Cole McDonald took the shotgun snap and fired to slotback Cedric Byrd on an out route for a TD and a 21-14 UH lead.

The scoring pass capped an 11-play, 96-yard drive.

The Warriors have scored 21 points in a row.

* * * * *

Cole McDonald scrambles to his right and then fires across his body to JoJo Ward for a 20-yard TD to tie it at 14 with 11:58 left in the first half.

The drive was boosted when safety Leandro DeBrito was penalized for targeting on running back Fred Holly. DeBrito was ejected.

* * * * *

After a rocky start — three turnovers and a two-touchdown deficit — the Warriors are down 14-7 (and with the ball) entering the second quarter.

* * * * *

Hawaii answers back with 25-yard scoring pass from Cole McDonald to John Ursua on a go route. UH trails 14-7 with 3:12 left in first quarter.

* * * * * *

Duquesne takes advantage of UH’s third mistake, going 23 yards in three plays — the last 20 on a pass from Daniel Parr to freshman Aidan Cain — for a 14-0 lead with 7:32 to play in the first quarter.

* * * * *

It’s not raining in Halawa, but it’s pouring.

UH fails to field kickoff, allowing Duquesne to recover at Hawaii 23 with 8:26 left in the first quarter.

* * * * *
Daniel Parr throws 6-yard scoring pass to Nehari Crawford for a 7-0 Duquesne lead with 8:28 left in the first quarter.

* * * *

Warriors’ first two drives end in turnovers. Following Cole McDonald’s first interception of his two-season UH career, slotback JoJo Ward loses possession on a pass to the right flat.

* * * * *

On the 147th pass of the season, Cole McDonald is intercepted in the end zone.

* * * * * *

It appears UH will open in a 4-2-5, with Manu Hudson-Rasmussen starting at nickel in place of linebacker Solomon Matautia.

* * * * *

In one of the earliest homecoming games in recent memory, the Rainbow Warriors play host to Duquesne today at Aloha Stadium.

Both teams constructed 3-1 records in different ways. The Warriors played two of their first four games on the road. The Dukes, an FCS member, will be playing their second FBS team this season. As an FBS member, the Warriors may offer up to 85 scholarships. The Dukes are limited to divvying the financial value of 45 scholarships. But the Dukes have 13 players who started their college careers at FBS schools, including quarterback Daniel Parr and linebacker Brett Zanotto.

    [sigh] Came down with flu-like weakness and aching body in the middle of the week so gave my ticket to seat partner jm2375. Now better but still a little weak so can’t even get to Genji’s for dinner and game. Too cheap for PPV.

    So I will be listening to the radio and reading the blog during the game. Hope you watching elsewhere can fill in some color comments during the game. 🙂

    You should try the theaters. It’s cheaper, and there’s Red Vines

  5. Bugaz September 22, 2018 5:01 pm

    Army just lost in overtime to #5 Oklahoma in overtime. That’s says a lot for a close loss last week I think.

  6. Stephen Tsai September 22, 2018 5:39 pm

    Bugaz:
    Too bad. I wanted to see Army stretch out a 7-minute, 25-yard drive in overtime. That’s mathematically possible, right?

  7. Mytake September 22, 2018 5:47 pm

    I know someone who flew on the same plane with Duquesne. He said they looked small. UH should win 54 – 16.

  8. djmitcho September 22, 2018 6:13 pm

    Once again the stadium app doesn’t work for me. Such garbage!

  9. wafan September 22, 2018 6:22 pm

    Anyone else in the PNW having issues watching the game?

  10. wafan September 22, 2018 6:24 pm

    Did the Dukes QB take lessons from Colt?

  11. islandman September 22, 2018 6:30 pm

    UH favored by 40.5 pts (?)

    Hope we don’t do the Hawaii version of the ODU v VA Tech game. Sure looks it. Another turnover.

  13. SteveM September 22, 2018 6:36 pm

    Sheesh, from what I’m hearing on the radio, thanks for not making “color” commentary on the game so far…

  14. Buffoman September 22, 2018 6:36 pm

    Wow, down two touchdowns in the first quarter. And they making it look easy. Our dbs are getting toasted!

  19. Buffoman September 22, 2018 7:07 pm

    The announcers are terrible. Miano and Kekaula talk too much and it gets irritating.

    Looking (or sounding) better!
    Get all the bad stuff out of the way early (Army loss, interception, penalties) and just Roll Tide, Roll!

    Errr…that sounds too familiar but I get the spirit of it. 😯

    Go Warriors! Go!

  28. NorthShoreFan September 22, 2018 9:20 pm

    What would we do without John Ursua?

  29. SteveM September 22, 2018 9:26 pm

    NorthShoreFan — yeah, I’m not sure if a pass was complete or not, to who, and where the ball is down. Gotta listen for the crowd cheers and wait for Curran to catch up with who, down and distance.

  30. NorthShoreFan September 22, 2018 9:34 pm

    LOL!…we should punish him by having him listen to his own broadcast!…Yeah!

  31. H-Man September 22, 2018 11:48 pm

    This was a win and the team is 4-1, but the turnovers and penalties took a lot away from that feel-good feeling. And yeah, special teams play was horrid.

  32. suckkabooya September 23, 2018 12:20 am

    A lot of stuff to iron out. Couldn’t take advantage when the outside receiver was isolated in single coverage tonight. Never tested their safeties over the top either. Lots of RPO. And a tight end in the red zone. Good up the middle run stuffing. Shaky secondary coverage. Special teams was not good tonight as well. Too bad. Got to regroup and regain that swagger that they had earlier this season. Can do.

    SJSU on the road next week…no looking past them but we should be 5-1 at that pointing heading into matches with WYO/BYU. After those 2, might get a good indication on how good we are and if winning the South can be done. So far our wins:
    W CSU : lost to Illinois St. (but beat Ark who is not doing that well)
    W Navy : lost heartbreaker to SMU
    W Rice -:1-3
    L Army : looking like the toughest test we had so far (stayed with OU lost in OT)
    W Dukes : FCS
    W? SJSU : 0-3
    W? WYO : 2-2
    @BYU, Nev, @Fresno, USU, UNLV, @SDSU : 3 killer road games
    Hard to tell yet if we can hang with Fresno & SDSU but the South is going to go thru one of those two teams this year. Beating BYU will be the big next challenge.

    Heh. islandman. Guess at least you and I here are watching same thing with our breakfast (well, I have thr better version, HD 1215) . . . 🥐🍳🥓🍚☕️🥤

    Great game last night. I think the Warriors were the quicker team. It worked out well and they won. 45-21 was my original prediction. 42-21 score. They only need to win three more games to make it into the Hawai’i Bowl. ( 7-6 )

  39. Boolakanaka September 23, 2018 7:41 am

    Ugly sloppy win is better than a tight crisp elegant loss…..just ask Oklahoma.

  40. Whats up September 23, 2018 7:52 am

    Maybe I missed something? Was there a bunch of injuries?

    I did notice that there were some football players that don’t usually get a lot of playing time, getting a lot of playing time in the 1st Quarter?

    I understand Hawaii was playing a FCS team at home and it would be a good time to build depth. But probably better to put in the starters first build a solid lead, then get everyone some playing time.

    IMHO, those 1st Quarter miscues are on the coaches, the coaches preached to the team to take FCS Duquesne seriously. But to put in some of the back ups from the beginning of the game does not show that the coaches gave FCS Duquesne much respect.

    I could be wrong and way off, but thats how the optics look last night.

    Speaking of optics… The 4-1winning record, Hawaii Warriors did look good in black & green! And good job on comeback win.

    However, San Jose State is no push over at home, historically SJSU gives Hawaii a tooth & nail fight at San Jose State.

    Work Grind/Earn Respect

    Alive Aloha/Play Warrior

    Play Swag/Go Warriors!

  41. Idunnonuttin September 23, 2018 7:54 am

    September 23, 2018 7:52 am
    IMHO, those 1st Quarter miscues are on the coaches, the coaches preached to the team to take FCS Duquesne seriously. But . . .

    Don’t forget that it was the Homecoming game. Such a sure thing, this game wasn’t in any betting prediction/line queues. Rolo and staff certaintly needed to make this game suspenseful and entertaining, even if they didn’t want to.

    You DO know Warriors won last night, right? 🙄

  43. Old School Dave September 23, 2018 8:42 am

    Good win for the warriors who are 4-1 now – (who would have thought?)! Props to the UH students who filled up their sections at the game!

    CSU’s HC on the hot seat after losing to Illinois State (#15 in FCS, now 1-4. CSU fan base upset after all of the money spent into upgrading the program (coaches salaries, new facilities, new stadium).

  44. NorthShoreFan September 23, 2018 10:13 am

    The Frosting on the cake for me was Elijah Dales run….out standing…:)

  45. Kahuna September 23, 2018 10:25 am

    I think some defensive players are just suited for different offensive schemes. Pumba Williams played lights out against Navy but disappear in other games. Sanitoa showed flashes yesterday but is still a young player. Picano(#53) made some nice players yesterday but never heard about him much in other games.

    Solomon Matautia being hurt necessitated the others to step up so not sure any of the subs going to get plenty of time going forward since we are heading into the meat of our schedule and we need our best to be on the field as much as possible.

  46. NorthShoreFan September 23, 2018 11:01 am

    #45…speaks well for the team. got lots of “replacement parts” and a total team effort to get to wher we are. IMUA!
