The Warriors can send thank-you notes to Knoxville, Tenn., Tampa, Fla., State College, Pa., and Wichita, Kan.
According to CollegePollTracker.com, football reporters from those cities gave AP Top 25 votes to the Warriors. UH tied for the 36th most points in this week’s balloting with five points.
Blake Toppmeyer (Knoxville News Sentinel) placed the Warriors at No. 24.
Brett McMurphy (Stadium/Tampa), Kellis Robinett (Wichita Eagle) and Matt Brown (Sports On Earth/State College) had the Warriors at No. 25.
Meanwhile, UH received 10 points in the Coaches Poll, the 41st amount.

Gotta admit, I was getting pretty stressed at about 3am here watching the game….but the young men executed when they needed to and got it done. An ugly win is still a win. Just ask Florida State or Texas.
I know people will be harping on the defense for efficiency and how many yards they’re allowing….but my goodness they are playing fast and aggressive and it’s a TON of fun to watch if you know what you’re watching. I think as the players mature and get more disciplined in their decision making the defense will be very impressive. If you watch film, watch the details on defense….there is serious talent. Hicks, Farris, and Ta’ala are developing studs, in addition to known talents Tavai and Matautia. Okeke, Ford, Pavihi, and Thomas are flashing. The offense is getting a lot of attention, for good reason, but let me tell you…this defense has the pieces to be a serious threat. I think Batoon is doing solid work.
Also, shout out to Punahou grad Kanawai Noa, who had 7 catches for 93 yards and a TD in Cal’s win over BYU. Noa is currently the Bears leading receiver.

#10, I agree, not every local athlete gets the opportunity to play at UH, and some of them are very good athletes but the numbers just can’t allow all the players to stay home. I would think that the core of the Tsaikos and those that have written in over the years would still support our local student-athletes who are furthering their education and playing the game they love. I know they supported our son during his playing years.
I will always support local student-athletes who are continuing to live their dream and get an education no matter where they are attending school. Maybe that’s just me, but I believe it takes a village to raise a child, and just because the child leaves the village does not mean we stop supporting them…..then again that’s me…. and I’m finding out that more and more often I don’t fit in many social ‘circles’ because i’m just too old fashioned and set in my ways. Guilty as charged, but for all the local student-athletes wherever you may be…IMUA LANAKILA and make Hawaii proud!

@#11 🙂 🙂 🙂 It is the Aloha Spirit that brings our keiki back home. All of the UH teams have examples of that. Keep supporting their dream wherever they may go and they just might find their way back again.
I have been in disbelief how the freshmen and transfers have exceeded expectations many levels beyond my fondest hopes. And how the returnees have improved through dedication and hard work. The team deserves every accolade coming their way! I go to each game not wanting to pinch myself and wake myself up.
After watching the game Sat, I was impressed with some of the things Rice did…esp on defense. I went back and reviewed their Houston game. They gave Houston all they could handle until the 4th quarter. Rice was better than I gave them credit for. The team may not have played up to their expectations, but they still won by 2 td’s. For the local bettors who were unhappy that the team didn’t cover (includes me, I was in Vegas midweek), too bad, too sad!
I fully appreciate how hard the team and staff has worked to get where we are. I remember that Hawaii was picked 2nd to last in our division. The only team picked lower was San Jose whose fans are all on suicide watch.

Exciting team to watch, they’re winning, and making mistakes at the same time. As coach Rolo said, their leaving a lot of points out there, learning
from their mistakes, making corrections and moving on is the best thing. Remember the majority of this team has never played in this run and shoot system. As they get better and learn from their mistakes (offense and defense) we will definitely see a more disciplined and cohesive team. Another observation, the team appears a lot closer and more supportive of one another. No Diva’s this year, I guess they all transferred (players and coaches) The player’s and coaches who are here, really want to be here for each other, and you can tell. This team will continue to make mistakes, just support them and love on them. and keep the boos at home. Start making plans for the holiday bowl season, because this team will not let you down. Hawaii Bowl hear we come.
Dollars to doughnuts, come spring and next summer, you will some local boys currently playing at D1 programs transfer back to UH…..
Those day’s of local boys staying home and playing for UH has long past. You can’t Google something or open the sports page without reading something about one our local boys (Marcus, Tua, Jordan, McKenzie, Taulia) dominating the news. It’s just a testament to how good Hawaii football is, and it’s at the most skilled of positions. No longer just offensive and
defensive linemen. If going to a name school on the mainland increases their odds of making to the next level, more power to all of them. As UH continues its success we’ll begin to keep our share of local boys. I agree with #17, we’ll start seeing some of “Da Boyz” returning.
Loyal fans aren’t just at the stadium. Many fans chose to watch the game at a bar or restaurant. Supporting PPV or an establishment that purchased PPV is supporting the team. In my opinion, it’s the PPV and the “Stadium experience” that keeps fans away.
The success of the Warriors will most certainly be an attractive option to the one’s that have gone away. A good example would be someone like sophomore Michael Eletise. The top local recruit is now a backup guard behind two other sophomores at Arizona……you never know. Go Warriors!
Too early to look ahead, but……the good, the bad, and the ugly.
1) The good – winning cures everything, and the offense has been scoring a lot of points, so far, in spite of.
2) The bad – our defense is ranked in the 100s in the entire FBS in yards allowed and scoring allowed.
3) The ugly – some of the decisions that had been made are head scratching and some bad tackling.
By no means, UH hasn’t played their complete football game yet against a good team. But, they have played good enough at critical times to get the job done. So, it’s all positive to continue to get better and improve as a team as the season goes on. CBS Sports has Hawaii ranked #47. CollegeFootball News has us ranked #68. I see Army simillar to Navy, but they are at home. We have to play well to beat them or we will lose. Offense needs to keep scoring and not let up and minimize penalties and turnovers and UH will have a chance to win.
I have given thought that especially for the OIA schools, there should be a special night where UH comps the first several hundred tickets for each public high school, and then coordinate with buses to the stadium. A well coordinated event could bring in 10,000 to a game, and certainly some parents would also join-in.
This would not only be an outreach and PR to public schools but it could start both patronage and consumer behaviorism which seems to have been lost along the way. Back in my day, going to a UH game was a huge event—but of course I had the Halawa Housing “all ticket pass—wink!”
As long as UH has one more point than the opposition, that’s good enough for me

They need to get better each game, and they know it. I think UH will surprise people at Army – the polls, the odds makers and the fans.

Just a hard core comment on Aloha stadium. Been to dozens of stadiums, Aloha stadium is just fine (been there too). If you want to make excuses go ahead and make them -parking, food, cost, and many others. Heard one about $8 beers! Most college stadiums don’t sell beer! CSU ten bucks half hour wait! Put this nonsense aside or your gonna miss the college football story of the year! GoWarriors!!!!
Just curious – I keep reading this is the first 3-0 start since 2007. My question, what other years, if any, have we had a 3-0 start to the season. I hope somebody has the stats handy, I’m to lazy to try to look it up. 😉

You know even with the success of Tua and Mckenzie I am sooo happy and feel very fortunate that Cole decided to be a Warrior and is our QB. Compared to those two this guy has as many or more attributes that you look for in a great QB and his ceiling could be even higher. His size and arm strength alone is pretty special but combined with everything else he has shown thru three games including running ability, decision making, leadership… this guy could be one of the best to ever wear a UH uniform when it’s all said and done. And as only a sophomore his future is whatever he wants it to be.

Okay, I looked at the UH web site and found results back to 1987. In 1988 we beat Iowa, Colorado State, San Jose State, and Utah to start the season. No bowl game at the end of the year, but a record of 9 – 3, with wins over Oregon, Air Force and San Diego State helping to make that total.
In 1992 we beat Oregon, Air Force, and BYU to start the season, with an overall record of 11 – 2, with notable wins over Pitt and beating Illinois in the Holiday Bowl!
Then 2007, which ended up 12 – 1! And this year – looking forward to seeing where this one goes!!!
I’ve said this many times but as a fan who has had season tickets at Aloha Stadium since the year it opened and have had the opportunity to see and sit in many stadiums over the years I have to say I love that stadium. Could more money be spent on maintenance and upkeep? Absolutely. But for me the location, ease of driving to and out of the stadium, and the comfort of watching a game it’s a great stadium. Wouldn’t trade that place for any of the more heralded stadiums across the country. Sugar Bowl? Nope. Rose Bowl? Nope. Utah, Udub, Colorado, Boise, L.A. Colisium, Nope nope nope. and I make it a point to see as many good high school match ups thru the year too. So I’m there much more than just the UH games.
I am like the guy next to the bill payer at the table. When he ask do you have change for a $20 dollar bill, I say no. But I have $4 dollars. I leave the $4 dollars, but take out 1 $10 dollar bill. Why? So I can get back my $4 dollars. Better advertising is a must. Fill the seats.

I agree that Aloha Stadium is just fine. Try sitting on bleacher seats for a game. Man, the okole come sore. Been to coliseum, rose bowl, Reno, UNLV, Fresno ST, San Jose and San Diego. Can not beat the seats at Aloha Stadium. My only pet peeve is there is not enough parking.

You’re right. The “in stadium” atmosphere has to be fixed. We need to figure out something to attract the casual and ppv loyal fan and get them inside. The experience has to be “bar patron” like so this may be solvable with some critical thought. Let’s figure this one out. We can do it. Somebody can.
I do enjoy the Aloha Stadium style seats rather than the common bleacher ones that you have on the mainland. I’ve been to Colorado and Wisconsin. It becomes a bit uncomfortable after a while. Not to mention your seat # is merely a sticker on the seat with no defined boundaries, so if you’re sitting next to someone who is quite large, sucks to be you

#36 Made in Hawaii. We didn’t have PPV back then is correct. On Oahu, you could watch the replay around 11:30 or on Sunday for free on KFVE. Neighbor islands got it live for free on KFVE.
PPV has generated guarantee revenue for UH but also has an impact on game attendance…if we could make the game experience somehow more of an event…say a post or pre-game concert by some of the well known local acts that younger people,.like UH students are drawn to…or, as has been suggested, bringing in high school football teams and/or pop warner football teams to bring up new UH fans…that might make a difference…

Watching the game, I concur with a poster who stated that tackling was a bit suspect, particularly by the defensive backs. Hey, I would be a bit gun shy trying to wrap up a 230 pound running back in the open field. But at the same time, isn’t it what you’re tasked to do? The alternative which is what we’ve seen from time to time make the player look bad and yardage gained by the opponent, that could have possibly been eliminated.
Ann you should look into buying parking from UH. I didn’t get to the last game till kick off and it took me less than 30 minutes to drive from Kailua and find my usual parking in the inner circle parking lot and walk to my seats in time for kick off. And let me tell you there are a bunch of parking spaces available. My total contributions to UH thru tickets purchased for football, men & women’s volleyball and men’s basketball is the minimum of $1700 which qualifies me for free parking passes for all of my season tickets. A great deal and I never worry about parking.

Parking is the real problem. #39 is right. I gave up my 4 season tickets way back in late 80’s and 90’s cause they started to give tickets for parking on the mauka areas of stadium, short walk over the bridge and right on. We used to leave UH area around 6:50 and got into the stadium by kickoff most times. Now? No way Jose! When an important game was being played, stayed home to watch the delay. Now with PPV make party at home or at the bar and watch-Mo easy!
ST is Mason Mataafa still on the team? Haven’t heard anything about him. After signing day I thought he might have been one of our starting DEs.

AllG, I believe I saw both Mataafa along with Laulu on the sideline suited up. Maybe redshirting as it didn’t appear that they were involved in the active discussions. Maybe they need to hit the weight room, but good looking prospects from the eye test.

I really like the seats in the stadium. I sat on bleacher seats in college, and don’t have any interest in going back. I would like to see the wireless bandwidth increased at the stadium though. Perhaps not a surprise, but the guys that sell PPV don’t have any wifi hotspots at Aloha Stadium. But that shouldn’t stop the Stadium Authority and/or UH from enhancing their service to those of us fans at the games.

Rolo said that the team hasn’t learned a lot of play book yet, they are still learning mode. Which is pretty impressive considering… Got to give credit to the young men, on such a young Hawaii Football team. Just imagine when they get like the 2006-2007 teams that knew the play book on all 3 phases of the game!!!
As the season goes on opposing teams will have video and be able to scout Hawaii schemes on all 3 phases of the game. Army will be scouting the video from the Navy game to see what they need to do to beat Hawaii.
Knowing that opposing team have video to scout Hawaii and the young men are still learning the playbook. I expect Hawaii to be in some dogfight games and the young men will prove the naysayers wrong that Hawaii Football is not all Flash and Paper Tigers.
This team has displayed that not only do they have the predator speed flash of a cheetah but fought with the heart of a lion when opposing team make try to make a comeback and have the eye of the tiger to finish games in victory. But they have to stay hungry and not satisfied or they can become the prey.

To expand on your idea maybe each participating school could run two concessions (if legally possible). One that would provide “plate lunch” style food (we need “Stew” at halftime) on the bottom concourse and one that sells baked goods on the upper levels. Maybe get the support of their cafeteria staff for certified assistance. All for their respective schools programs as fund raisers. It may be an incredible one of a kind opportunity to raise funds if organized right. Leave the pizza, popcorn, hot dogs, nachos, fries, saimin and drinks for the Stadium to sell. Can get creative as you represent your school. All would be for the purpose of creating a future generation fan base, one game a year.
Got lots of room for “family friendly” alcohol free sections. Just got to coordinate it somehow. Its hard trying not to use “swear” words (for me; be it in anger or in happy celebration) when kids are in next row. I think would benefit everybody if that can be worked out somehow.
Maybe (if legally possible) the KCC Culinary School could run a concession or two (the actual commercial kitchen stands) and some separate “quick purchase” stands along the length of the bottom concourse. As professionals, they could really get creative. Bento, fried noodle, chili, stuff like that.
And of course, there needs to be one game where Millennials get in at a 50% off ticket price discount (via ticket office ID purchase). Maybe for that game a more updated song playlist (maybe a turntable DJ or something like that) and a lot more and longer “cam” cutaways during timeouts. Get them “pumped-up” and more involved somehow. “MTV” style.
The “Box” is such a comfortable and cozy safe house for the cautious. It controls your misjudgments to the confines of its dimensions. UH (Matlin and Co.) needs to first enlarge the dimensions of the “Box” and then still think outside of it. There is a lot of “wiggle” room so can get real creative, especially with their knowledge of the (legal) parameters. Coach Rolovich has done so much to change and re-brand the program, I hope we not wasting his time. Somebody will scoop him up quick.

Going back to the record book, I found some interesting stuff.
1924 Otto “Proc” Klum’s team went 8-0. That season they beat Army. Navy and Colorado.
1925 Otto “Proc” Klum’s team went 0-0. Beat Colorado St and Washington St that year.
There were other teams starting 3-0, but they did not have a “collegiate” schedule.
So the next team of note IMO is
1972 Dave Holmes’ team went 8-3, winning their 1st 5 games (Portland St, Cal Lutheran, Puget Sound, Cal St Fullerton and Montana. Dave Holmes followed that with a 9-2 season in 1973, winning the 1st 8 games (8-0), starting with the historic win at Seattle, beating the Washington Huskies 10-7. He finished the season beating Utah .
1981 Dick Tomey’s team went 9-2, winning the 1st 7 games (7-0) with wins against Cal St Fullerton, Idaho, Wyoming, New Mexico, San Diego St, UNLV and UTEP. He finished the season beating Colorado St and South Carolina.
1988 Bob Wagner’s team went 9-3, winning the 1st 4 games (4-0) starting with Iowa, followed by Colorado St, San Jose St, and Utah; finishing with a win against the Oregon Ducks. Wagner followed with the 1992 season going 11-2 with opening wins against the Oregon Ducks, Air Force and BYU, and finishing the season with wins against Pitt and Illinois in the Holiday Bowl. That year Hawaii finished #20 in the AP Poll.
1999 – Then came the famous NCAA record turn-around June Jones’ 1999 season. Yes, he lost the first game against USC 7-62, but he won the next four games, finishing the season 9-4, closing with wins against Navy and Oregon St.
2007 – June Jones had his famous undefeated regular season in 2007 with significant wins against Boise St and the Washington Huskies. The Warriors finished the season ranked #19 in the AP Poll.

Holmes, I think, is a relatively obscure coach to the nation, but because of Neil Everett, he got his due.

With all due respect, Mr Kekaula is the worst sports announcer on TV. Mr. Miano is ok as an analyst but Kekaulas’ diction is atrocious and his play calling is all over the place. I am especially bothered by Kekaulas’ slurring and mumbling of his words. As a local Hawaiian guy myself even I have difficulty with his play by play announcing. I’m a long time Tsaiko lurker.
