Cole McDonald threw four touchdown passes to boost the Warriors to a 43-29 victory over Rice tonight at Aloha Stadium.
The Warriors improved to 3-0, matching their best start since 2007.

Instead of running out the clock, UH’s Fred Holly ran
away, going 46 yards on a dive up the middle to extend the Warriors’ lead to 43-29 with 1:35 to play.
The Warriors opened the drive when Dakota Torres secured Rice’s onside kick.

Aaron Cephus’ 19-yard scoring catch closes Rice to 36-29 with 1:48 to play.

Cole McDonald and Cedric Byrd collaborate on a 26-yard scoring pass to extend the Warriors’ lead to 34-22 with 3:01 left. McDonald then coasted on a two-point keeper it make it 36-22.
The drive was set up when JoJo Ward caught a short pass on second and 10, eluded a defender and raced down the sideline for a 63-yard gain.

The Owls close to 28-22 with 11:49 to play thanks to Austin Walter’s 46-yard kickoff return (following a safety) and Austin Trammell’s 31-yard, catch-dodge-and-sprint play on fourth-and-6.

After a goal-line stand, UH is stopped for a loss — and a safety. Rice closes to 28-15 with 14:43 to play.

In a 1-2 momentum changer, the Warriors forced a Rice fumble, then went 27 yards in four plays for a 28-13 lead with 4:37 left in the third quarter. Running back Fred Holly III went the final 5 yards on a stretch run around left end.

Haden Tobola, Rice’s second kicker, converted a 31-yarder with 9:45 left in the third quarter to close Rice to 21-13.

Jack Fox kicks a 34-yard field goal to close Rice to 21-10 with 19 seconds left in the first half.
On the ensuing possession, the Warriors took a knee to bleed out the clock leading to the intermission.

Armstrong-Brown secured the catch at the 10, then made a spinning move en route to the end zone.

This time, it’s a 10-yard toss to Cedric Byrd on a flag route to the left corner of the end zone. McDonald was 4-of-4 for 54 yards on that drive, the Warriors’ second possession of the game.

The Owls won the last two meetings, including a hastily scheduled game in Houston in 2014. The payback for that game is tonight’s game.

Got to give it to the defense! They made some big stops and turnovers. This team has the never give up attitude. Got to give credit to Rice Football team they gave Hawaii all they could handle.
Rice is a good team they gave Houston Cougars Football team all they could handle last week 45-27 loss… the same Houston team that put a 45-18 shellacking on PAC-12 Arizona team coached by Kevin Sumlin.
A lot of Hawaii penalties and miscues that need to be cleaned up.

Under 22,000 fans showed up. What does it take to get fans fannies in the seats?
Wow. That seemed like the most roller coaster-ish game yet. Really glad Hawaii is 3-0 while being tested so much. They earned the right to learn while still being undefeated. It looks like each new team is learns more rapidly than the last how to derail the offense, but it is really good that Hawaii seems to always get back on track.
Reardon gotta ask about the booing at the post game press conference to the players no less. That’s kinda pilau to bring it up to them. I’m not one to ever boo I’ll just put my hands in my face and shake my head no matter how bad it gets.
Gotta create the culture. Look at your other mainland colleges (who basically have their stadiums on campus). Look at their fans. We don’t have anything close to some of those schools yet and they have been doing that for years.
Listen to the Paul Feinbaum radio show. Those people aren’t crazy more than they are fans that prioritize SEC football as much as they do grocery shopping or laundry. Are Hawaii residents willing to be like that?
Remember, we have PPV too which is convenient and important to N. island fans.
We might almost be there with UH football being the only game in town. True fandom must be created.
Warriors now 3-0. After having been a 17 point favorite they only win by 14! Although a lot of things to correct with this one a 14 point win is fantastic. Overall Rice is the best team we played at the time we played them. Now CSU beats Arkansas, Navy beats Memphis and Rice will also have a decent year. As rough on a few edges as we were I’ll take a win and 3-0 anytime. Frustrated at times with all three phases of the game the remote thought of booing this effort never came to mind. GoWarriors!!

last night was one of so many “small” mistakes by the offense, defense, and special teams, but they won and, right now is most important!
very frustrating to watch — Rice was very disruptive and their DL and LBers started stunting to throw off Hawaii’s blocking scheme, in the 2nd half, but looking forward to Army!
while UH may not have started the season against a Power5 team, they have played against 3 very good mid-level teams and Army on the horizon.
Could be a lot of fans don’t have the money nowadays to buy tickets for football games with the high cost of living and rising housing costs, etc.
But Vegas never seems to be a problem, ehy?

Rice possessed the ball 13 times ending in 4 punts 2 turnover on downs 1 fumble 1 interception. They did have three TD’s and Two FG. I do consider given the flow of the game field goals are semi-stops. Not too bad. Regarding attendance, people can do whatever they want but how many are huddled in bars movie theaters garages and family rooms with a crowd. There must be thousands that unfortunately opted out of the live action. I myself envy those that go to the games particularly because it is the only game in town. I can only say they are missing out on what many have longed for exciting high scoring offense and overall stout defense. It is not out of the realm of possibility that in three weeks time the Warriors will be 6-0 and 2-0 in conference play. SJSU is pretty bad. Gotta do a gut check on your fan-o-meter! Go Warriors!!!
Good win last night. Some discipline issues but correctable. Hoping injury list is minimum. Army pose a different kind of challenge. Beat Navy so will be a tough road game.

Didn’t like the booing of the booing of the play calling. Players really don’t know who it’s intended for. Seems like childish behavior to me.

Even though last night’s attendance was roughly the same as last years average the feel was different. The energy in the stadium was caused more by the anticipation (expectation really) of seeing the “electric” plays that this offense brings. Last year had much less expectation so there was a lot of waiting and hoping as opposed to expecting. I guess that’s why there was a little frustration with the play calling, thus the “booing”. It was surprising however (to me) that this “newness” hadn’t translated into more attendance last night. I guess the balance of the opening game were Navy fans. I thought for sure 28,000 at least.
As for the gameplay all three phases took a step backward (my opinion) a little. But only a little. I think the regression was not indicative of anything, just Rice having installed a nice game plan. Especially defensively. We do need to apply more pressure (their quarterback did extend plays nicely when the pocket collapsed). Rice had way too much time to throw. The secondary needed some help from the rush. Nice to see Armstrong-Brown produce. He is the nice, big complementary target (his back shoulder route footwork does need a little “ironing out” though) that is missing from this group. Also got to figure out how to free up Ward from “good” press coverage (maybe motion him or something). He did have some difficulty getting into his route. And the special teams execution (punting unit and kickoff coverage) and decision making (by the coaches) seemed “off”. All fixable. Just a few adjustments I think. They can do it. Fortunate to be learning while still winning. Good for us the fans. 3-0. Hard to complain.
The main thing I notice about watching a winning team is that the timeouts don’t seem as torturous because you’re in a good mood.
I hope there is someone in upper management actively working on the multiple ways to get the Stadium filled. Coach Rolovich has done his part thus far so the next step has to be Management. Lots of wiggle room to get creative with so many empty seats available. This is the “figure it out year” so think “outside the box”. The direction needs to be visible and clear by next year. I usually think they can do it but, hmm, I’m not that sure. Somebody can. Just got to figure it out.
More bettah just put up and surround Cooke Field with aluminum bleachers like Maui’s War Memorial Stadium. Save money and can easily accommodate 25,000
