Warrior Beat: Keene observation
As Navy set up to punt, Hawaii’s Jeffrey Keene moved side to side, eyeing an opening into the backfield.
Then Keene burst through the middle, and blocked Owen White‘s punt just inches after it exited his shoe. Defensive end Max Hendrie scooped the football and raced 19 yards to the end zone for a 28-0 lead.
“I just saw an opening and took it,” Keene said following this morning’s two-hour practice on the grass field.
Keene said the play was a result of studying videos and working on kick-blocking drills.
What was unique was the approach. Past UH kick-blocking specialists Matthew Harding and John Hardy-Tuliau attacked from the edge. Tony Akpan, Tua Mahaley, Viane Moala and Meffy Koloamatangi were rim-protecting blockers. Keene used his pass-rushing skills to storm the middle.
“I enjoy it,” Keene said of the middle attack. “It’s fun. It’s something different.”

Regarding some of the comments from the prior post, I like the June Jones and Greg McMackin era uniforms, and the Paul Johnson era uniforms. There are going to be 12 – 14 games per season, so it shouldn’t be difficult to include both. Lots of teams have tough mascots (Aztecs, Badgers, Bears, Eagles, Wildcats), and the University of Hawaii has that with the Warriors, but it also has a lot more to show and market. And on a related note, wins are great, getting ranking votes will be great, but we will know the team is really getting noticed when the reviews start saying Hawaii ais winning because of the “system” đ
Hawaii Warriors ranked #45 in the coaches poll this week……highest since the Bow’s were ranked #28 at the end of the 2010 season. Prior to the loss to Tulsa in the Hawaii Bowl we were #24 @ 10-3.

Whew! What a weekend. The Tsai-kos are always happy to welcome visitors to our tgate. So when the United States Naval Academy Alumni announced that they were having tgate but didn’t have the knowledge to put together a big event, I saw a way to help a bunch of visitors by showing some tgate aloha. Being a Navy Alumni and a core tsai-ko, I quickly drafted other Tsai-kos to help. When all was done, we had cooked 300+ pounds of meat to feed a crowd of 600+ Navy football fans. To make this happen, I owe a big shout out to the Grill crew headed by JesseJames with Homey, Koakane and Akamai Okole, the meat cutting crew of Hiflyer, BG, JM2375, and newbies DMT + Hubby, and tabling crew of JAM, Jamie and Jason. Also a mahalo to Kekoa, the Momos, the Lopakas, Mo/Leonard, Protector and DPK/Sweetie for supplying local kine ono grindz for our visitors to sample. Most of all, I owe a special thanks to Mrs. SB who made sure evrything got done while Kekoa and I held ‘court’ from our throne (a.k.a. the blue table). At the end of the tgate all headed off to watch the game. Good thing the food was ono since the game didn’t go well for Navy. BTW, if anybody is missing what looks to be a minature garage door or car opener, please let me know. We found it in the grill area during clean-up. Cheers, SB

i like the idea of “marketing” the “H” logo, again, which a Texas HS used as their logo until informed by UH that it was not cool.
also, the idea of marketing the “island chain”, not like the toruisty, but ones but the black background with the “green” image of the islands — maybe, even with the helmet as the background
we would buy and pass out on trips to the mainland as we do with choco candy, Hawaiian calendars, key chains, etc. to people who would otherwise have absolutely no way of getting these items — bus drivers, waitresses, etc.
maybe a TIM and/or marketing class at UH can make this a semester project — start to finish including identifying business who can make the product ( like A-Joe ) and companies that can print the final product , and names of UH sponsors who would be willing to sell the logo ( like Buti Grove )

#6 oneseason … itâs great that you like the old uniforms but each set of uniforms cost money. If you hadnât heard the Intercollegiate sports program is losing money … there are better things to spend limited funds on than having multiple uniforms. Pay for the basics … and when flush with money, spend it on upgrading facilities for player training, diet and education.

Rice spent some $31 million on a new athletic complex (new weight room, training, & meeting rooms) a few years ago.

Someone needs to tell ESPN to update their stats. They don’t have any Hawaii players featured when clearly they should be. Great to see that Hawaii is doing so well again.
#14 Sangamon Keith … It looks like UH got 3 sets of uniforms this year. The 5-year contract with Under Armour is for around $2 million a year, so uniforms (assuming around $100K per set) ran about 15% of that total annual compensation. This year, UH plays BYU. Next year UH plays 3 Pac-12 teams, and Boise State. So there should be a lot of chances for marketing UH and Hawaii to a national audience. If there is case to be made for promoting Hawaii businesses with some football nostalgia, then an extra $100K might not be out of the question. To me, it seems like UH could miss an opportunity to connect a 2020 era duel threat offense to all of the classic wins from Hawaii’s past, but that is just my view.

I thought the hullabaloo surrounding the current administration was extending the life of print journalism.
I would buy the doesn’t matter how you look, it’s how you play until you factor in the emotion phycological side of being human. Schools paint the visitor locker rooms pink, white, taupe and softer pastel tones for physiological warfare to not inspire and emotionally charge up visiting teams.
Lets not play naive and think that certain colors don’t bring out different emotions and inspirations in humans.
No to all green uniforms (Those uniforms are attached to not winning). The white pants and white helmets do look like storm trooper-ish… (Can always have a retro night). The question is would you rather have a team of Storm Troopers or Darth Vader’s?
Rolo is doing the right thing bringing back the Hawaii Warrior era RnS and uniforms, then add that Island logo with “H” logo beautiful helmet that just inspires Hawaii State pride and swag!

Leonard Peters one of the spectrum commentator for pre and post game show. This year Hawai’i looks for a bowl bid. 7-6 will do. But if they go 12-1, most times and FBS school like Hawai’i will be relegated to the BCS. This means only the P5 conferences will be picked for a top 4 tournament that determines a national champion. See UCF knights with McKenzie Milton 12-0 season. BCS, Not the top 6 ranking as supposed it should be for the newer rpi and top power 5 conference to top 6 teams at year end. This year is the same again.

Speaking of color uniforms, I recall in our magical season, Colt and crew also wore white. It’s not the color but what is in their play!
Before we close the book on the uniform issue (it’s really not an issue actually) I just wanted to mention that we (UH fans) are so fortunate to be associated by two such diametrically opposed identities (Warrior Tribal and Rainbow) that represents the People here (culturally) so perfectly. A lot of teams have multiple uniforms, but here at UH not only does the uniforms have meaning (especially the island chain) but they are both pretty captivatingly eye catching, even when the product on the field was not as good. We have a lot to market here and we are fortunate (blessed really) to be able to reach those all different types of individuals. So lucky. Now we have to execute. We can do it.
BTW speaking of “throwbacks”, Jeff Keene is that kind of player. “Scrape and slide leg wrapping, smart tackler”. Nice.
ok; the Hawaii-Rice game is scheduled as a MW broadcast (for mainland folks only on mobile devices); but it is nowhere to be found on the Stadium schedule (Watchstadium.com); what gives? Hawaii is not listed as one of their schools in the schedule section; auwe.

Whats Up….What an insult to Hawaii’s proud football history. It wasn’t the black Darth Vaders that beat Illinois in the ’92 Holiday Bowl. It was the Green and White Rainbows with players named Michael Carter, Jason Elam, Ivin Jasper, Doug Violeti, John Veneri, Eddie Kealoha, Derrick Branch, Matthew Harding…and they finished the season ranked #19 in the Coaches Poll and #20 in the AP Poll.
I would love to eat fried rice Sunday morning, if our Warriors will win and beat the point spread. Just wanna be sure my cuz in Vegas place my small bet. Go Rainbows and score a lot of touchdowns. 14 points is nothing.

Coaches Rolovich, Ganot and Trepasso always relay to their players the Proud History of UH’s past. The players (here) know the significance even if some fans seem dismissive. I don’t think they mean to be. They are simply looking forward, I think because there is some direction now. Tatsuno was a Rainbow. Alika and AC were Rainbows. That ’92’ Holiday Bowl teams were Rainbows. Colt and Co. were Warriors. Ganot’s NCAA “bracket busters” were Rainbow Warriors. So good now. And so good then. Terrific.
If you were with the Rainbows, untouchable. Cannot be beat. The traditional warrior and big man is a classical. You were among the founders of loyal fans and life long supporters of UH football. Long timers for UH football is you if you remember that Warrior on the grounds at the games in Aloha Stadium.

1973 UH athletics was crap. Poor as heck. Today it is a more beautiful site, and still poor. Revenue was under $1 million dollars.

They tried out for the islanders, to beat UH baseball entrance. Les Murakami antagonist supporters, the islanders wannabe.

BTW, I saw the islanders play, they were s cut above UH baseball, 1988. Johnny Matias. 1973 Islanders that is. Semi pro team. These players were a cut above 1973 OIA teams. Like Farrington Governors high school baseball team.
