Reporting day

Summertime is over, and training camp begins for the Warriors.
Players are required to report today for orientation sessions (although most have gone through the procedure prior to beginning summer conditioning drills).
The first practice is at 8 tomorrow morning.
The first eight practices — tomorrow, Saturday, and next week Monday through Saturday — are open to the public. After that, the practices will be closed to the general public. All open practices are scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Bring a folding chair or blanket, sun screen and lots of water. It’s still summer.
VEGAS ROUTINE
Every summer, the UH basketball coaches watch games in Las Vegas. Lots of games.
After that, they meet for a late meal and discuss the games they watched.
Head coach Eran Ganot, who is in Vegas this week, said that’s the routine.
The UH coaches return Sunday, and that afternoon, they will conduct their third practice in advance of next month’s trip to Australia.

    Yes.

    Foresight.

I remember when the Honolulu Weekly criticized Kapolei for being a ghost city.

The main road that runs up and down the heart of Kapolei downtown should have been comprised of three lanes instead of two going both ways.

This is the reason why building a stadium in this area would be problematic.

    Oh, and good morning.

  2. cappie the dog July 26, 2018 6:37 am

    I missed AC/DC day.

As for being picked fifth, like Malcolm Young wrote and Bon Scott sang on AC/DC’s debut “High Voltage”: “It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll!”

Prove me wrong, as to not running the flex-bone.

    I have season tickets.

    Not a hater.

    I’m all in.

  3. islandman July 26, 2018 6:49 am

What time does the basketball team usually practice during the Monday to Friday week ? In the afternoon ?

  4. PONO July 26, 2018 6:50 am

Hoping Ganot and Co. are finding some nice prospects in Vegas.

  5. Old School Dave July 26, 2018 6:51 am

People need to get behind the program (like Bulla said) and take Rolo’s attitude of “Quit whining, play ball, and move on.”

Pac-12 reiterated to Utah that their sports teams need to play on Sundays in order to remain conference members. So much for BYU.

    Funny comment heard:
“How about a floating football stadium? After football season, just tow it into storage. It’ll be just as innovative as a stadium with moving stands!”

  6. Maddog50 July 26, 2018 7:05 am

Practice starts tomorrow-long wait is almost over. Got my tix to CSU and looking forward to seeing former teammate Rick White and my good friend Lance Tanaka and family. Lance and I first met years ago at the triple overtime game at Wyoming and have since met up at CSU Wyoming again last year and at the OT victory at AF. We had a chance to watch last years disappointing game at Wyoming as guests of Dave Matlin in AD box, what a great time what a miserable loss!!!! Looking forward to seeing Lance and Shawn! GoWarriors!!!!!!!

  7. islandman July 26, 2018 7:26 am

Article today reminds of a new redshirt rule, a player can play up to 4 games and still redshirt. The 4 games can be spread out during the season. So the example given is Cordeiro or Moussa could play in 4 games but still be a redshirt this season.

  8. burro sabio July 26, 2018 8:42 am

#7 and that can cover up to 8 different games and preserve redshirt years for both.

  9. winning July 26, 2018 8:49 am

All this talk about a smaller new stadium is useless. All UH has to do is start winning some damn games! Pretty soon they will be talking about how to save the stadium and empower themselves to share more in revenue. Recruit harder, play well and the rest will take care of itself. Its not rocket science! Wake up! Well see come Aug 25-should be a good gauge as to how they will do the rest of the season. The beer will taste better when they win.

  10. burro sabio July 26, 2018 9:27 am

IMO the State is stonewalling a new stadium to force UH to build it themselves.

  11. Kahuna July 26, 2018 10:06 am

To me a new stadium is a MUST. Everybody in the league is upgrading except us. We cannot be left behind. Even if we start winning again, we got to match a winning program with a up to date stadium and not a dinosaur of a structure. Recruiting will be even harder if we don’t build something that catches kids attention.

UNLV will be playing at that new Raider Stadium. CSU just built a new one. SDSU is in the planning for a new one. Boise is constantly updating their stadium. Aloha Stadium got WHAT?

I rather have a smaller, sleeker more eye pleasing stadium than a 50,000 one that has no modern upgrades and is still in the Stone Age.

  12. kama krab July 26, 2018 10:51 am

    #11,

Or build a smaller stadium with the capacity to build up to something bigger. Of course with your modern amenities and club/suite seating.

I’m of the mind frame that it will happen, whether it’s UH that finds a major donor or the state that ponies up.

  13. kama krab July 26, 2018 10:52 am

    by the way, Howzit Everybody.

  14. Stephen Tsai July 26, 2018 10:54 am

You know how it’s better to get a job when you already have a job? Same with the stadium. Eventually, a new one will have to be built. It’s better to build one while Aloha Stadium is still functional. Or else — what? — Aloha is condemned and state spends millions going, hmmm, I think a replacement should be built

  15. H-Man July 26, 2018 11:03 am

I live in Ewa so a new stadium in Kapolei would make it easy for me to attend games (I’m a season ticket holder). I could actually walk to the games, but Kapolei is the wrong location. The football stadium should be on campus. There’s more than enough room to build one there. Just need to step out of the box and visualize what can be done. And there will be traffic concerns. No question, but six or seven Saturdays. That’s manageable. But if the Manoa campus is out, then rebuild at the current Halawa location. By suggesting Kapolei, Hanabusa is aligning developers and other money people (Ko’ Olina); not in the best interest of UH.

  16. turfwar July 26, 2018 11:06 am

ST, what happened to the latest JC QB that recently committed. He’s not listed in your qbs in today’s article.

  17. kahuna July 26, 2018 11:07 am

Plus if the stadium is to all of a sudden be condemned, where is UH going to play. Its not like the mainland where the school can just relocate the games to a neighboring city. We have no other D1 level stadium here in this state.

If we wait for the stadium to fall apart then build a new one, then UH are probably going to have to play 12 road games for a couple of years while waiting for the stadium to be built.

  18. Stephen Tsai July 26, 2018 11:08 am

Oh, I forgot to list him.
I’m old. I forget a lot of … uh, what were talking about?

  19. Maddog50 July 26, 2018 11:13 am

So it starts! I am more excited about the unknowns than ever before-I’m likin the clean slate approach. As far as stadiums been to Wyo AF CSU(old) UNlV NM. Been to a lot of MAC BiG Ten ND etc. From my own personal view much prefer a 35k stadium compared to the larger venues. It’s all about filling as many seats as you can. Love the capacity stadiums packed at 30-35k. At least that’s my experience. GoWarriors!!!

  20. turfwar July 26, 2018 11:23 am

Interesting news on stadiums has come out just in the past couple of days. Hawaii News Now had a report yesterday on a report that was recently released on stadiums being built with tax money. It was discovered that the average cost to tax payers for recently built stadiums and arenas in major cities was $6000 per seat! And out of the San Diego Tribune came a story that SDSU who had been paying Charger Stadium $160,000 per year for the lease on 7 or so home games will now have to fork over $1.6 mil. per year as a result of the Chargers moving to another city. One writer who covers the Aztecs predicted that when the Chargers announced their move that the football program could be in danger of disbanding. Scary stuff for non power 5 teams without big TV money.

  21. 808bowler July 26, 2018 11:23 am

From what i hear from former season ticket holders is that they don’t like aloha stadium. If they built a new one they would come back.
For me im there to watch the game and back UH. Excited football season is here.

  22. Lance Tanaka July 26, 2018 11:25 am

#6, Madddog, Mahalos for your kind words and friendship. I enjoy that we share the same win/lose DNA–once a Bow/Warrior, always a Bow/Warrior. You are a man of true class and honor. I will always remember your kindness giving up your seat rest for my pops at the AFA game. He told me to give you a big hug the next time I see you. So a big hug from pops is in order when I see you. I look forward to catching up and enjoying the game with you. GO BOWS!

  23. Lance Tanaka July 26, 2018 11:32 am

If anyone is interested in tickets for the game in Ft. Collins, a link was set-up at: www/csurams.com/promocode and the Promo code is: UHALUM. Anyone case purchase tickets from this site. It was set it up through our UHAA and Friends – Colorado Chapter. There are tickets from the 50yd line area but those are in the upper level on the home team side, which is not bad at all and will allow our players and coaches to see our fans. A bunch of us will be in sections 226 and 227.

Gameday restrictions are pretty tight with the new stadium so check out CSU’s website to see what they allow to be brought into the stadium. Hope to see you at the game! GO BOWS!

  24. Old School Dave July 26, 2018 11:46 am

A new UH Stadium will have to funded by private donors and corporations, IMHO. Too much of the non-football local public doesn’t care about UH or Football (they believe that Rolo is overpaid as it is). The California Hotel is a start – Mahalo!!. BOH, First Hawaiian Bank, Outrigger, Hawaiian Air, A & B, the list goes on. If Lahainaluna High (albeit on a smaller scale) can find a donor, who can’t UH? Believe that there needs to be a revamping of the way UH AD Fundraisers approach potential donors instead of the “You like buy sweetbread or Portuguese Sausage” approach.

Locals complain that they have no money, but think nothing of going to Vegas annually or more and blow thousands of $$$.

  25. turfwar July 26, 2018 11:49 am

Been to the LA Colesium, Boise, U of Colorado (a beautiful stadium), U of Missouri, Sugar Bowl, Udub, but in my opinion as a season ticket holder since the stadium opened none of these stadiums were as comfortable as Aloha Stadium. Many still have bench seats! Granted I sit in the Orange section around the 35 yard line and the seats were just replaced a couple of years ago but I don’t understand the unhappiness with fans. Almost all of the seats have as good or better viewing than similat seats in other stadiums and the scoreboard works fine for me. What exactly do you fans want in a stadium ? Will bells and whistles (whatever that may be) make a loss or win any better? I say pour any available state funds into making the UH facilities better and maintain them better. Now that could definitely result in competing for better recruits and helping produce more winning seasons which affects attendance which affects income, which affects alumni donations… Just today HHN reported that UCLA just finished their alumni donation drive with nearly 5 billion dollars. Sheesh.

  26. islandman July 26, 2018 12:01 pm

    16. QB Tanner Darling is listed on the roster. He is the 6 th in the article QB list.

  27. Bulla July 26, 2018 12:02 pm

#5 Old School Dave mahalo for the props, but it’s a sad state of affairs when we look at the support or lack thereof for our football team. It’s across the board that the program is treated like an absent stepchild and the decisions being made at the Squared Round Building and Upper Manoa will continue to keep the program shackled…. a long time ago we used to say ‘champagne taste on beer money’ or ‘thinking of Dom Perignon while guzzling da Primo’ haha. We just have to support these young student-athletes and I know I am preaching to the choir….. we just need more of ‘us’ than ‘them’! Blessings always to all……

  28. Da Punchbowl Kid July 26, 2018 12:04 pm

JJ was right about a lot of things, among them, the notion that a stadium should be built on the Manoa Campus. UH would get all the revenues from concessions and host prep games for a nominal fee too. Make it pre-wired and designed for state of the art broadcasts. Plug and play, so to speak. Build it as the best site for outdoor concerts, MMA fights etc, and they will come.

Corporate and big donor luxury boxes. Start smaller, around 35K with expansion capabilities at low cost. UH pays no rent, keeps all vendor, merchandiser and advertisement receipts. Built as a public private enterprise which expands and enhances community support for the Warriors football team.

I’m very excited about the opening of camp.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  29. Bingo July 26, 2018 12:21 pm

“Too much of the non-football local public doesn’t care about UH or Football (they believe that Rolo is overpaid as it is)”

Bingo, that’s the correct answer. For me, it’s just CHEAPER to pitch in $5 and bring a dish at a relative’s house every Saturday than fight traffic and sit next to drunk fans at the stadium. Plus the food is always my cousins house.

I am glad Hawaii football PPV will always be here.

  30. Bulla July 26, 2018 12:24 pm

I agree with DPK because that formula has worked time and time again across the mainland. Over the years when traveling to support ‘Da Beast’ I was so impressed with the various schools and their product from Missoula Montana to University of Utah to William and Mary….. just a great presentation and money making venues… C’mon somebody, we gotta wake up over here and get moving!

  31. islandman July 26, 2018 12:38 pm

Keep all revenues but UH would have to pay for all new stadium operating, maintenance and repair costs. In 2014 & 2015, at least, Aloha Stadium was operating at a loss in the millions.

  32. turfwar July 26, 2018 12:57 pm

Exactly islandman. What business model works for a 30,000 plus seat facility plus parking in maybe the most expensive real estate area in the one of the most expensive cities in the country that is occupied for less than half the year? Even if you could attract a Bruno Mars type of attraction every year that would only add a couple more nights at best. Then what?

  33. turfwar July 26, 2018 1:31 pm

One idea JJ had to gain more TV money was to move the football season for non power5 schools. Out of the box and brilliant. MLB revenues would take a hit but TV contracts for conferences like the MWC would definitely benefit.

  34. Ichyboy July 26, 2018 2:12 pm

Great commentary on support of (or lack of) our football program. Need to get to the root of the problem first; which is poor attendance and season ticket holders, both go hand in hand. The difficult problem is how to get more students to attend games. My wife and I both attended games while attending UH (back at the old “Termite Place” and to Aloha Stadium). After graduation we became season ticket holders and continue to this day. The students are your flow for new season ticket holders if you can get interest. Its not a easy task, but something that sports marketing and executive management of UH athletics need to address. Other issues like facilities and a new stadium are important but if attendance is poor, what makes you think a new stadium will increase attendance; you will have the same 20,000 fans but in a smaller facility. This will not increase UH revenue. Winning helps a lot but consistent support from alumni/season ticket holders brings more consistent funding.

  35. JustCrazy July 26, 2018 2:35 pm

ST: is there a minimum stadium size for entry into the P12?

  36. Andrew July 26, 2018 2:54 pm

    25. The area of the Boulder Colorado stadium is beautiful but the stadium itself isn’t all that nice. The side we were on was kind of a dump. The worst part was the bathroom. Besides the luxury boxes, I think Aloha Stadium is pretty comparable to there if not nicer. A nice stadium I’ve been to was Wisconsin. The only that place lacked was no alcohol in the stadium

  37. Da Punchbowl Kid July 26, 2018 3:16 pm

Like Coach Rolo’s statement in the SA today. He says to quit whining and play football, but the time has come to start looking at the future. Hawai’i is unique in so many ways, and the challenges our state faces aren’t just about football. It’s folks like Rolo and JJ and many others who understand that.

Meanwhile, let’s see what we can do about kicking some okole.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  38. Aaron July 26, 2018 4:17 pm

in order to build an on-campus stadium, the softball stadium would have to be demolished, along with the tennis courts and then there “might” be enough room for a 30,000 seat stadium between the dorms and the parking structure… or you could demolish Andrews Amphitheatre and everything in between there and university ave adjacent to Dole street… that might be kinda cool. Close Dole street on game days and make it a big block party… excellent idea by me!

  39. Aaron July 26, 2018 4:22 pm

I agree with Turfwar – Aloha Stadium is way more comfortable than any other stadium i’ve been to. We shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss its value. the absolute worst stadium i’ve been to was the Rose Bowl – the seats are so tiny! CU Boulder was nice, but the bench seats were terrible. Superdome was pretty good, but i’ve gained a few since then so maybe it isn’t as comfortable now hahaha…

  40. kalua pig July 26, 2018 4:47 pm

    #nobleachers

  41. Akamai Okole July 26, 2018 4:59 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

    No Mo Monku…Jus FutuBolu.

  42. Akamai Okole July 26, 2018 5:06 pm

Me and Mrs. AO had a great time last year at the Rose Bowl. Terrific concept for the City of Pasadena.

The city-owned facility sits amidst TWO golf courses, hence the year-round usage is solved and the stadium itself is only used 16 times each year…7 UCLA home games; The Rose Bowl; 1 NFL event: 5 concerts; and 2 soccer matches. That facility is pristine!

…and I hear they host a pretty good parade in the city every year, too! 😉

  43. Akamai Okole July 26, 2018 5:08 pm

Sorry Aaron…but I no like whine about da Rose Bowl. 😆

  44. alnbama July 26, 2018 5:54 pm

No worries, Be Happy. I’ve watched the Warriors play at Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, and had tickets to Michigan. I’ve seen maybe 15 games at Aloha stadium and the thing that make for the best experience is the crowd. Nothing like the feeling of the Aloha stadium rocking during the Tomey and Jones yrs. Just start the winning tradition and it won’t matter if they played the game at Ala moana park.

  45. wafan July 26, 2018 5:57 pm

alnbama. Now that is a name from the past.

  46. alnbama July 26, 2018 6:02 pm

Hey wafan, i still lurk just been hard to get excited for the boyz. But its the start of a new season and the good feeling are starting to ramp up.

  47. amela July 26, 2018 8:20 pm

Good Wi-Fi for the students. Discounted alcohol for all students that’s right all students.

  48. burro sabio July 26, 2018 9:43 pm

I repeat this often, but, kids, don’t do drugs.

  49. Bryson July 26, 2018 11:07 pm

Hey Lance I think you play golf with my dad John…

  50. suckkabooya July 27, 2018 1:08 am

The students (ones who dorm and those who live off campus) should have an area to tailgate that doesn’t require cars in parking spaces. A party area similar to the “Rainbow walk” path section set-up where the Sports Animals do their show. They need to “pep rally” themselves en masse and enter the stadium that way. No driving required (uber or shuttle) and moderate drinking inside the game but full pregame mode (with the use of some common sense) from 2:00 in some area designated for them. Maybe we could get more participants that way. Gotta figure out some solution to lack of student section participation.

  51. suckkabooya July 27, 2018 1:29 am

With the students participation we can develop a rivalry with somebody. When we played BYU back in the day, the student section was non stop noise (occasionally induced by the band) and it was incredible to witness in person and be a part of. Once they can get that feeling of elation, the participation will roll like a wave. We just got to get it started back up. We can figure it out.

  52. seewhy July 27, 2018 2:26 am

The students don’t care about UH football. Why? Because they said we, “suck”. Plus, they always say that there’s other nightlife things to do on a weekend. Seriously, go to campus center and ask any student why they don’t go to the games, or barely stay till half time. I’d say the biggest turnout, for students, was the 2016 Homecoming game, which we lost to UNLV. After that, they stopped coming because we kept losing at home. We just need to start winning. Period.

  53. SEARIDER-DOGG July 27, 2018 2:28 am

    GO DOGGS!! WIN THE WEST

  54. roygbivs July 27, 2018 3:22 am

    Hoo-Raah!! Football is HEA…. Finally

As for the stadium size, I think, you have to build for the future… 30-35,000 will be too small. Look at the SSC, they sed build at 4000…. We’re the cream of the crop in the BigWest, wished it was 12,500 so we could host some NCAA tournament games but it’s too small for that, so we’ll never see a tournament game eva!! Dey sed it could be expanded but I don’t think in my lifetime. So, I would like to see an expandable stadium built anywhere between 45,000-60,000+seats…. Hey, we could get an NFL game here, mayb, mayb get some connections with Las Vegas and da Raiders ??

  55. Maddog50 July 27, 2018 3:38 am

Lance Tanaka you’re too kind. I must say sitting with your Ohana and spending time with your father created a fond moment-especially when the Warriors pulled out the OT victory over Air Force. Game never should have come down to that and the Warriors played well enough to win for 3 quarters. Now the journey begins for 2018. Anxious to here reports and pics from camp. Little known fact CSU is billed as the youngest team in CF guess who is next yep us. Based on returning starters! GoWarriors!!!!

  56. HawaiiMongoose July 27, 2018 6:51 am

My two-cent prediction for the day: Tanner Darling is going to make more of an impact at QB than people expect.

  57. Inyoface July 27, 2018 7:22 am

I guess they didn’t have to put on primer with those matte helmets from last year?

  58. Bryson July 27, 2018 7:49 am

The day is finally here…thank goodness what seemed like a long off season is over, can’t wait to see what new players separate themselves from the pack…

  59. Boolakanaka July 27, 2018 8:55 am

Who goin practice tomorrow morning ? Bruddha Boola might make a surprise appearance (DPK?) I’ll bring da malasadas! Oh, saw
my old teammate Carl Stokes yesterday at the Moana- looks like he could strap it on tomorrow still!!

  60. burro sabio July 27, 2018 9:16 am

Boola, Carl Stokes lives here or he’s visiting? A name from the past.

#58 howzit 🙂 not making practice today but will be dropping by now and then. #38 Brunn is my nephew and is blessed to be on the roster. He is a gamer that will do well and time will tell. IMUA LANAKILA, SUPPORT YOUR HOME TEAM….nuf sed
