Hawaii snubbed, at-large to UCI

absolutely stunnng
UCI gets second at large
The season is over for the Rainbow Warriors.

Hawaii (19-8), coming off a runner-up finish in Saturday’s Big West men’s volleyball tournament, was not one of two at-large teams selected for the NCAA championship field announced today. Instead, UC Irvine (21-9), which lost to Hawaii twice this season, was chosen as the second team from the Big West.

It was a stunning selection in that Hawaii was the only team to defeat both Long Beach State and UCLA this season. The Warriors also eliminated the Anteaters this past Friday in the Big West tournament semifinal.

The Rainbow Warriors were en route back to Honolulu and unavailable for comment.

On May 1 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, the Anteaters face the winner of Friday’s opening round at Ohio State where the two-time defending national champion Buckeyes host Conference Carolinas champion King (23-5).

Ohio State, seeded sixth, earned the MIVA’s automatic berth when sweeping Loyola-Chicago on Saturday.

Big West champion Long Beach State (26-1) claimed the top seed with Brigham Young (22-6), the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champion, seeded second. The 49ers and Cougars, the latter defeating UCLA in four on Saturday, have byes into the May 3 semifinals.

On May 3, Long Beach State will meet the winner of UCI and either Ohio State or King in the second semifinal. The first semifinal has BYU taking on the winner of the May 1 match between UCLA (24-7) and Harvard (13-13).

On Saturday, the Crimson defeated Princeton in four to claim the EIVA’s automatic berth and the Tornado swept Barton for the automatic bid from Conference Carolinas.

It is the first NCAA men’s volleyball tournament appearance for both Harvard and King.

The championship match is May 5.

I’d like to hear the selection committee’s rationale for this. I’m not holding my breath.

  2. Cindy Luis April 22, 2018 7:35 am

    1. agree
Stunning. Not sure of the justification

  3. Warriorfan April 22, 2018 7:41 am

Can charlie send a complaint or do something even uci knew they were done after the loss friday. This feels like a complete injustice to the team.

  4. Robin April 22, 2018 7:48 am

UCI may have beat CSUN 2x, vs. 0-2 for Hawaii, but Hawaii went 2-0 vs. #12 UCSB (UCI 1-1), plus UCI lost at home to #15 Fort Wayne. Hawaii didn’t lose to any team outside the latest top 10.

vs. LBSU (HI 1-2, UCI 0-2)
vs. UCLA (HI 1-1, UCI 0-2)
vs. BYU (HI 0-1, UCI 2-0)
vs. Pepp (HI 0-1, UCI 1-1)
HEAD TO HEAD: HAWAII 2, UCI 1

  5. Robin April 22, 2018 7:51 am

BOTTOM LINE: That head-to-head on a neutral court SHOULD have decided it. Plus it was 3-1 with two of those UH game wins with UCI in the teens.

  6. Don April 22, 2018 7:54 am

Time to mobilized UH expats in LA. Turn Pauley green by having Hawaii fans fill the arena and make the committee regret the choice.

  7. Warriorfan April 22, 2018 7:55 am

Re .5 right that’s the only fair way to go about it.
charlie and the players must be soo mad.
If Loyola got it in I wouldn’t be as mad Irvine making it after hawaii beat them friday is a slap to the face.

  8. islandman April 22, 2018 7:58 am

Up to April 15, UCI was 8-4 on the road and UH was 2-3.

  9. Ron April 22, 2018 8:03 am

This has to be the top of the list of the many , many, times that the NCAA has done this kind of thing to Hawaii. Very sad for the team who worked so hard to get where they (and the rest of us) thought had earned the right to the play-offs. This should motivate us for next year but it does not alleviate the total unfairness of this decision.

  10. Warriorfan April 22, 2018 8:03 am

Well up to april 20th uci 1-2 against Hawaii.

  11. Don April 22, 2018 8:13 am

All the more reason there should be 3 at large bids to make an 8 team tourney. Works for DIII, why not DI/II?

  12. Warriorfan April 22, 2018 8:15 am

Still not over this one, the guys probably are devastated. It’s a huge step back for recruiting also. Especially when uh goes head to head for recruits against irvine and they can say they made the tournament and Uh cant.

  13. islandman April 22, 2018 8:22 am

    UH ended up 2-4 away.

  14. Machu Pichu April 22, 2018 8:25 am

I was at both UH games this weekend. They were clearly better than UCI. Their performance against LBSU was very bad, but LBSU played out of their mind. They showed why they’re number one and there was no team that could have beaten them last night. But that shouldn’t be a mark against Hawaii.

  15. Kahuna April 22, 2018 8:30 am

Total sham IMHO…not only UH getting snubbed but OSU in the play in game with Harvard getting a bye. What is the justification for that???

Who did Harvard beat to deserve a higher seed? This indicated to me that the committee were not using SOS nor RPI for their selections. Wouldn’t be one bit surprised they were using their own criteria and tried to monkey around ‘this tournament by saving money and making sure this thing has national representation by seeding Harvard higher.

If UH made it, they might have had to seed them 6th or 7th …..thus sending UH to OSU/Kingor OSU/King to Hawaii. Too expensive so they figured picking Irvine will eliminate all that headaches.

  16. noblesol April 22, 2018 8:38 am

I had a feeling the egg they laid yesterday might not sit well. That on top of the CSUN/Pepperdine road trip. The impression left was not a good one, being viewed as a weak road team content to sit on its resume at home, expecting credit for its significant wins but not debit for its significant losses and road record.

The selection committee has all the gray area it needs in its process and criteria to exercise its judgement. And they aren’t required to explain. I don’t like it, it should be changed. But there are powers at large that like the NCAA selection committee process just fine the way it is.

  17. Lori April 22, 2018 8:42 am

Why are we so shocked – we are dealing with the No Care/Clue At All committee.

Are these people accountable to anyone re: their decisions? Can’t the Athletic Director from Hawaii find out why UH was not invited?

Just looked on UCI’s website. They have absolutely nothing about the NCAA championship. Perhaps they are just as shocked about getting invited as we are about not getting invited. At least Hawaii has it on Star Advertiser and Hawaii athletics website. UCI has nothing. Speaks volumes doesn’t it?

  18. Robin April 22, 2018 8:47 am

Could it be a $$$ factor that Irvine is a bus ride up to Westwood?

  19. Kahuna April 22, 2018 8:57 am

Men’s vball is not big enough a sports that will generate outcry. This shock will only be felt in the men’s volleyball community.

It’s unfortunate that this committee could not be fair minded and do justice. Took away a deserving spot for one team(Hawaii), screwed over another by making them play a play in game despite being 6th in the RPI and belonging to arguably the third toughest conference in men’s volleyball(OSU won their tournament), and just overall mind boggling decision to seed Harvard above OSU.

If this wasn’t a sport, I would have like the FBI to investigate these members.

  20. Robin April 22, 2018 8:57 am

RE: Harvard as a #5 seed.

Wow, look at their resume, 13-13 (including EIVA tournament) in the “powerful” EIVA.

  21. Warriorfan April 22, 2018 9:01 am

Still UH should not just accept this quietly they need to make a stink about it like
    How Dave would.

  22. T103 April 22, 2018 9:11 am

Just jumped on volley talk, never ever been on there reading the comments, but theres a lot of discussion of how the seatings went. People are tripping’ how Harvard has a higher seating then OU. I’m tripping that UH won 2 out of 3 matches against UCI AND bounced UCI from tournament this past Friday. Seems like RPI doesn’t even make a difference. SMH. This is so dumb. Would it even be worth Charlie’s energy to protest?

  23. islandman April 22, 2018 9:19 am

Not enough road wins, only 2, although UH beat UCI in the BW tournament on a neutral court.

  24. vballfan April 22, 2018 9:28 am

What has UH gotten in return for raising one stink about past (Wahine) snubs? Nothing!
As disappointing as this snub is, have to agree with 16, above: yesterday’s game and the CSUN, Pepp. road trip may have not helped UH’s case for an invite.

  25. Kahuna April 22, 2018 9:29 am

Yes… there should be protest. We need to get these committee members ban from future committees. Secondly we need the NCAA higher ups to REQUIRE all members to use RPI as a big part of there decision. I have ZERO doubt the committee threw RPI out the window because not only what the committee did to UH but also to OSU.

These members should not use these selection show as a laboratory for their personal agenda. Their decisions can cost people money and programs their deserved spot.

Wade and UH should definitely write to the NCAA and find out how they came to their decision. I am mostly interested in the OSU/ Harvard fiasco. I don’t see anyway the committee can explain that except for stupidity.

  26. Warriorfan April 22, 2018 9:37 am

If the non conference schedule is what did UH in then hope charlie never goes to that grow the game challenge again, would have been better to play at loyola/lewis/ball state or something, maybe schedule a few matches during their santa barbara road trip like at stanford, anything could have helped that bad road record.

Yes they didn’t get the job done that northridge/pepperdine road trip I am not sure what went wrong with the team there but they certainly came back from that strong and made a case to get in over Irvine who had hiccups all season as well losses to Fort wayne and santa barbara.

  27. noblesol April 22, 2018 9:45 am

Below is a recent private message I wrote to a VT member re the NCAA WBVB selection criteria and committee processes. Most of it applies as well to the Men’s selection committee process and criteria:

“The SoS formula is looking RPI like. Not quite the same but similar.

All that gray area in treatment of SigWins/Losses practically guarantees controversy at some point, as does the general lack of transparency regarding calculation of criteria and tie-breaker process within the committee.

It would be relatively easy to correct all this in the pre-Champ manual. Just define it all in an appendix to the pre-Champ that they could change or tweak to their hearts content from season to season. As long as it all out there for teams and fans to track and plan for, it should add to a sense of a level playing field. Publishing the committee’s data and thinking would add to a sense of fair play.

As is, there is a sense that no one is quite sure what will happen when things are close, not even those assigned to the committees. No one knows if the process and judgement followed by one committee one year, will be the same the next year. In fact, they can only be sure that committees aren’t bound within the gray subjective areas to the previous years thinking. They’ll exercise their own judgement and prejudices.

It’s good for the committee to have some leeway, but rather than hide from that they should embrace that power, and have to publish their deliberations. The criteria should be completely defined, totally objective, and published in a running fashion throughout the season. The committee should be empowered to consider all that criteria when making tournament selections, with the power to overrule it if they see fit, but be required to publicly clarify when unique and unforeseeable circumstances may make the criteria inadequate or ill-suited. They should be required to publish their thinking behind decisions that deviate from the criteria.

Secret deliberations using ill-defined criteria and non-transparent processes seem to me to be a poor model of fairness to hold out as a model for student athletes and institutions of higher learning to follow. Worse, the current situation appears to be at least somewhat deliberate. Which begs the question, who is happy with this situation?”

  28. HawaiiMongoose April 22, 2018 10:17 am

This is a travesty. The selection committee members clearly were exercising a political agenda. Head-to-head results prove incontrovertibly that UH is a better team than UCI, and for purposes of filling at-large berths that reality should outweigh all other considerations.

  29. Aloha73g April 22, 2018 10:21 am

I think it is clear that the NCAA was thinking about money. It’s cheaper for them to take UCI over Hawaii and it was also cheaper to seed Harvard higher than OSU. Money should NEVER be a part of the thought process when making these decisions.

  30. Warriorfan April 22, 2018 10:22 am

Agreed if t came down to irvine and hawaii head to head is all you look at at this case the rest doesnt matter.

  31. islandman April 22, 2018 10:29 am

If they use RPI, do the use the April 15 one that was published ?
Don’t see any RPI ranking after that one.

  32. Warriorfan April 22, 2018 10:33 am

Hawaii rpi would have jumped irvine.

  33. Warriorfan April 22, 2018 10:36 am

If they are too stupid to make the decisions on weeks old rpi rankinrgs they really should not be making the decisions.

  34. Kauaiboy April 22, 2018 10:43 am

Wow just woke up to this new, what a travesty!!!!!!

  35. Warriorfan April 22, 2018 10:59 am

This is different than when the wahine got snubbed, this is not getting a tough draw or being sent on the road as a top seed.
this is being left completely out and having two seniors careers end abruptly, when they did enough to play another week.
Hope charlie makes a big stink it may not do anything now but it will make the ncaa think and possibly make them expand the field to 8 teams instead of 7. what happened to Uh and it’s players today is not fair.

  36. Cindy Luis April 22, 2018 11:01 am

    Thanks everyone for being civil
UH AD not happy but there is not much they can do
Not to feed conspiracy theorists but of the 3 committee members
One from UCLA One from Ohio State
    The other from NJIT

  37. roygbivs April 22, 2018 11:04 am

We didn’t play ourselves into the tournament. Period. Win (the BWT) and you get in! No committee to decide your fate….
BTW, I watched our game vs Beach, we didn’t show up man.
Life goes on, our TEAM, will overcome this, sometimes it takes heartbreak to comeback next season with a little more clarity, focus and how every game is important as the next one.

  38. Kahuna April 22, 2018 11:12 am

#37….neither did Irvine so why were they rewarded with a spot in the championship instead of UH who beat them twice?

It’s alway simple to say win and in but two spots are reserved for two teams who DID NOT accomplished that goal. We are one of those two teams and we got screwed over due to travel distance.

  39. chink April 22, 2018 11:14 am

This one hurts. It will just make it that more sweeter when UH wins the whole shebang next year:) Gotta keep positive and look forward.

  40. Ki April 22, 2018 11:32 am

This is what happens when you don’t play “lights out” every match; your past comes back to haunt you. Those two losses to CSUN (both sweeps) and Pepperdine (1-3) gave the NCAA cause to NOT select Hawaii as an at-large. Yes, we all know Hawaii should have made it but when you give the NCAA cause to think otherwise, you know they going with the cheaper chicken.

  41. Warriorfan April 22, 2018 11:33 am

Re.37 hawaii did more than Irvine that’s why this stings. irvine had nice wins back at the start of the season but Hawaii is the better team right now they proved it on the court. Still very upset.
Next years shedule is brutal play at long beach and at Irvine , hawaii just has to split, they do host the big west tournament , but the national championships are at Long Beach:/ and with deFalco returning it will be a tall task. this was the warriors best chance to surprise everyone and win it at Pauley Pavilian the warriors have played very well there lately.

My hope now is that maybe Long beach wins it all defalco decides to turn pro.
I just hope the warriors use the snub to improve and not take any game for granted , any one game could cost you the chance to play for the national championship as we saw.

If only they showed up at northridge and Pepperdine if only they didnt choke that second ucla match or the first long beach state match if only they didn’t play awful the second Irvine match at home or the BYU match, IF any one of those matchs had been wins the warriors are probably not in This position:( but i still thijk they did enough and the Ncaa made the wrong decision!

  42. kahuna April 22, 2018 11:53 am

#41…I don’t know man….I am convinced that even if we did beat CSUN and Pepperdine and we finished scond behind LBSU, we would still be left out. The NCAA is going to find some excsue to leave us out. Too much home games, not enough tough games non conference on the road, blah, blah, blah. Probably would not put a Irvine in but would find a way to get maybe a Loyola in to save money.

  43. Big Island volleyball fan April 22, 2018 12:59 pm

18 & 29: You said it all. It boiled down to dollars. Cheaper to send UCI to UCLA than Hawaii to UCLA. I know it doesn’t sound fair, but NCAA is a hard-nosed, self-serving business. It doesn’t care about the athletes and staff. Only consolation: the players can buckle down and study for finals without the distraction of a road trip.

As for next year, I was surprised to hear that Hawaii will host the Big West Conference. If so, UH will have to do all it can to win it at home no matter the seeding. That’s the best revenge.

  44. Isleboy April 22, 2018 1:03 pm

Matlin should step up and demand written justification
From NCAA. Take that write up and publicize in media.
Will Matlin step up and sit back or sit back so…
    Welll”……………

  45. Bleachercoach April 22, 2018 1:05 pm

Not to get off track but its like we have a super duper 32-3 Historic Sand Volleyball Team that already beat Cal Poly and Long Beach St on the road that are ranked next to or slightly below Hawaii. This coming week is the Big West Championships and Hawaii has had a tougher schedule and been ranked no lower than #3 all year. What worries me now is if Hawaii didn’t win the BW Championship would they snub Hawaii’s Sand Team..Trust me Cal Poly is Lethal and LBSU is very good….Oh boy Coach Jeff and this sensational team members , ” Don’t Leave this in the Fate of the NCAA Sand Committee” because past history including today shows what happens regardless of how great and historic your season went….Just a very careful Observation!

  46. Warriorfan April 22, 2018 1:17 pm

The beach team needs to make up for the warriors injustice and win it all.

  47. kahuna April 22, 2018 1:18 pm

The NCAA commitee admitted that travel is a factor. So sad for the game if that is the case. I pity the teams in the fuure that will be in a siutation where they deserve to go but is located too far away and the committee choses the school close to the localtion of the NCAA championship site.

Instead of having all the deserving team, you will likely have a few deserving teams and a few who happened to be close to the championship site.

  49. Sean April 22, 2018 1:34 pm

For those claiming distance (and by extension, finances) as the determining factor, the following quote from the NCAA announcement seems to invalidate any such claims.

“The remaining two teams were selected at-large without geographical restrictions.”

I am not stating that the committee did not ultimately utilize this factor, but want to highlight that they are left without excuse for their decision – geography cannot be their rationale. I also cannot understand how road losses to CSUN and Pepperdine are worse than home losses to Pepperdine and Fort Wayne. Perhaps we need to concede that the decision is simply irrational.

The unethical (or uninformed) behavior of the NCAA is an affront to our players, our coaching staff, our university, and our state. While it may not affect the current situation, I do hope that AD Matlin makes our voices heard and vigorously seeks accountability for the powers in place. Although disappointed, I am still very proud of our efforts this year. Go Bows!

  50. Big Island volleyball fan April 22, 2018 1:36 pm

    41. Again, I express surprise that UH men’s volleyball will host the Big West Tournament next year. Since NCAA snubbed UH this year for financial reasons, why would they then send five other teams to play in the Big West Tournament next year? True that UH is hosting women’s beach volleyball Big West Tournament this year. This just doesn’t make sense unless the Big West Conference is independent of the NCAA.

    47. Your commentary about sand volleyball was interesting and I plan to travel from the Big Island to watch it. As a Cal Poly alumnae I’ll root for Cal Poly to beat Long Beach. If Cal Poly faces Hawaii for the Big West championship I’ll be happy if either team wins as I support both teams. But most likely Hawaii will win the tournament especially now that the players are aware that Hawaii could be snubbed if they don’t win.

  51. Bluemojo April 22, 2018 1:54 pm

Yesterday’s game ,where was Hawaii? Coaching dysfunction, front line attackers in the back row couldn’t pick up anything ,should have had faster, quicker players back there, instead they were just serving subs,
blame the coaches, It was sad.
I would not be surprised if some players transfer out next year.

  69. T103 April 22, 2018 5:39 pm

Cindy, how is the selection committee formed? Does the members change from year to year or does it stay the same? The other thread Tsai put up said the committee has only 3 of the 5 conferences represented and those people decide? I have no idea who’s in it and how thats determined, Im not even gonna ask criteria for choosing teams that are close, its a mystery, seems like a mystery even to people who are supposed to know, per the article/interview of how the selection & criteria is in place.

R.P.I. pointed out too low percentages on hitting for Hawai’i. Also, the overall ranks did not hold ground. Loyola or Hawai’i weren’t chosen because of other factors. Harvard, King, Crimson, UCLA, etc.

    A good choice.

  71. RainingHiMan April 22, 2018 6:37 pm

Our players are as talented as those on any team. However, in the Long Beach State final, Hawaii had 20 errors in three sets. Just wondering if the practices need to demand more precision?

  72. oneseason April 22, 2018 7:44 pm

Its odd that the people running the tournaments for sports that have very complex and specific rules do so without any rules themselves. It would not be difficult to establish open selection rules before the season even begins. But a lot of people like this don’t get to where they are by following the rules, and they certainly don’t seem to have much commitment to starting now.

  73. KOH I NOR April 22, 2018 7:57 pm

They want the reward, they’ll have to pay for it. Reward? Yes. Every one in America geared towards men’s volleyball will know their names. Long Beach State. Ensing.

They must pay for it. The name.

  74. Hot April 22, 2018 8:00 pm

Outrageous! All they can do is move on from this and work hard to get better. I like a lot of the returnees. van Tilburg, Worsley, Gasman and Solbrig. Gage should slide in at Libero. Rosenmeier needs to be more consistent. They need an upgrade at opposite. Parapunov is not it.

  75. KOH I NOR April 22, 2018 8:03 pm

For example, in MLB, from Hawai’i, Shane Victorino, Kurt Suzuki has a name. Each of them hit over 100 career homeruns to their credit. “Each” 12 years and 14 years respectively.

    See how recognition works? Kids…

One more comment on the seeds then I am out of here.

Ohio State, MIVA, Penn State, EIVA, UCLA, MPSF, Long Beach State, Big West. These matchup were formed from the early 1980s, when UH Men’s Volleyball was in its infancy stages to national recognition as it is today. Funding was scarce. So a reliance on networks like KHNL, K5 sports, were of more importance due to Honolulu’s location. Because of S.S.C. in Manoa today, technology is more easily made available on the RF spectrum. Cost has dropped to a minimum. So showing a game, the cost to show it has been wiped out. The internet has taken over and minimum cost was made more readily available to hold a match, than it was ever before. The problem now will be to fill S.S.C. with fans so that the stadium can pay for itself. Built in 1993.

  89. chink April 23, 2018 7:35 am

Hawaii with a final RPI of 4 and UCI at 6….?????? WTF

  90. chink April 23, 2018 7:41 am

Maybe the committee made the selection without doing their due diligence, maybe they saw UCI’s record and assumed they were the deserving team… and now they’re saying whatever they can to save their butts to fit the narrative as to why UCI was chosen over Hawaii.

  91. chink April 23, 2018 7:50 am

…or you know, the whole, I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mines situation between UCLA and OSU representation on the committee.

  92. T103 April 23, 2018 7:57 am

Still bummed at what happened. I know UH was traveling back from Cali while the selection program was going on but has there been any comments from Charlie or any of the boys? Saw Shoji’s tweet about the situation but thats about it.

    94. Today’s paper had comments from Charlie.

  95. H-Man April 23, 2018 9:53 am

Islandman, thanks for posting the link re selection criteria for at-large bid. In reviewing the criteria, I would say two categories really hurt Hawaii:
    1. Results versus common opponents; and 2. Home and away results. Their losses on the road to CSUN and Pepperdine really hurt them with Hawaii posting a 2-4 away record. And against common opponents, Hawaii did not fair well – UCI beat BYU and CSUN twice each, while the Bows lost to BYU and CSUN twice. And in another criteria, wins and losses. UCI posted 21-9 record, versus Hawaii’s 18-9. To me, when looking at the criteria for at-large selection, there is little argument for bias. UCI looked better on paper.

  96. Ron April 23, 2018 10:35 am

H-Man, I know your argument is thought out but the bottom line is we beat UCI 2 out of 3 and pounded them on a neutral court . It does not matter who looked better on “paper”.

  97. Chicken Grease April 23, 2018 11:28 am

Lower campus should start suing already.

If we can’t get invited, at least we can take money from thr NCAA.

  99. Warriorfan April 23, 2018 11:31 am

Not to mention hawaii beat long beach who beat irvine twice and ucla who beat irvine twice, nice try hman lol

  100. noblesol April 23, 2018 11:48 am

The LBSU court is less than an hour away from UCI’s. UCI plays there at least once each year. While technically a neutral court, it’s practically a home court advantage compared to Hawaii which has to fly 2500 miles to get there and stay in a hotel. UCI stays at home, then jumps in a bus and gets there 30 to 60 minutes later. Hawai’i still won, given UCI’s advantage. But apparently the match didn’t matter. Head to head didn’t matter. RPI didn’t matter. Conference record, didn’t matter. SigWins and SigLosses didn’t really matter (or did it? treatment of SigWins and SigLosses is one of those ill-defined mystery criteria). Only non-conference road record mattered to the committee’s mad hatters. I’m sure it would have been nice for Charley to know that was the criteria which would matter most when he was making out his schedule and preparing his team. But the process is that know one can know what criteria will matter most from year to year. It’s asinine.

  101. Warriorfan April 23, 2018 11:52 am

    102. The criteria will change from year to year to fit into their agenda.

  102. noblesol April 23, 2018 12:19 pm

There is a human tendency for victims of abuse to ‘take it’, blame themselves, to even justify it. I hate dealing with lawyers, but everyone should know when to consult one. Time for UH to consult with its lawyers? There needs to be some plan to change the status quo.

  103. KOH I NOR April 23, 2018 12:20 pm

    Still open.

If not Long Beach State or UCLA, I’ll go with BYU to win the title. Ohio State is good, but BYU is huge.

    Good luck.

  104. islandman April 23, 2018 12:23 pm

H – Man, Nice analysis but chink posted the April 21 RPI and UH was ahead of UCI.
However in one of the links above the committee chairman did not really explain why UH was not selected when asked about it.
    102. Besides non- conf road record , there is also conference road record.
Also UH played two Div III teams though UCI played one.
UH also played two matches that did not count in the W-L record-Academy United and Thompson.
Should they have been scheduled ?

  105. Ki April 23, 2018 12:42 pm

Who were this 3-member selection committee? Maybe we should FLOOD their emails with questions/reasonings why Hawaii WAS NOT selected.

  106. noblesol April 23, 2018 12:49 pm

106, see 104. Acknowledged, Hawai’i had a weaker road record. That’s a criteria. But, arguing that one criteria should out weigh H2H, RPI, SigWins/Losses, seems nonsense to me. In any consideration of body of work, you should give more weight to recent performance and conference tournament performance. Again, advantage Hawai’i. I think 90% of the volleyball world knows the selection committee jumped through some hoops to get a result they wanted. Unfortunately, some will still engage in schadenfreude and victim blaming.

  107. noblesol April 23, 2018 1:26 pm

Although not a criteria before the selection committee, Hawaii tops UCI in Massey Ratings:

    Harvard. _____. ______

    Ohio st. UCI. LBSU
    King. ____. ______. _______

  110. Robin April 23, 2018 2:24 pm

    H-Man: In UH’s favor:
UH went 1-2 vs #1 LBSU, UCI 0-2
UH went 1-1 vs. #3 UCLA, UCI 0-2
    UH went 2-0 vs. # 12 UCSB, UCI 1-1
UCI lost to #15 Fort Wayne at home, UH has no losses to anytime outside the top 10 (top 9 in fact).

Hawaii and UCI finished tied in the conference standings…
Hawaii meets UCI in the postseason on a neutral court, and wins convincingly in 4 sets (two games in the teens).

    April 23 poll- Hawaii #4, UCI #5
RPI thru April 21- Hawaii #4, UCI #6

AVCA coaches must know little and the RPI system must mean little then…

  111. H-Man April 23, 2018 3:37 pm

Yes, UH beat UCI 2 of 3, but UH lost twice to CSUN and lost to BYU, teams that UCI beat twice. The two losses to CSUN were on the road so it was double jeopardy for UH. But if you argue that because UH beat UCI a majority of times they met, then you can say that BYU should not be in the tournament because they lost twice to UCI. I mean the argument can go on and on about who beat whom, but there was a selection criteria and apparently UCI stacked up higher on overall points based on the criteria. Yeah, it seems unfair, but Wade should be familiar with the at-large selection criteria and should have known they were vulnerable if they did not win the outright BWC championship. Those conference road losses really hurt UH’s chances for an at-large bid. There should be no crying in the towel.

  112. kahuna April 23, 2018 3:48 pm

The committee goofed up. Almost every one who know men’s college volleyball felt the UH vs Irvine match was the elimination match. I bet you even Irvine thought that. It is certainly obvious that the committee picked and chose whatever criterias they felt suit them and placed heavy emphasis on them instead of what was done traditionally..which was RPI, SOS and head to head.

If we allow committee members to do whatever their gut tells them to do, then you will have inconsistency from year to year and that is not good.

I don’t get it how some fans just cannot see when so much went wrong. From the UH snub, to the OSU in the play in game to a 13-13 getting a higher seed.

It is obvious to me this committee was not up to the task.

  113. Robin April 23, 2018 3:49 pm

H-man: no argument about BYU; they won the MPSF tournament. Again, you must know more than the coaches that voted UH higher with the body of work completed, and the RPI system, which factors in home/away- with UH STILL HIGHER. BTW, its not UH’s fault that they alternate home/away 2 games versus 1/1 splits against So. Cal teams.

  114. haka April 23, 2018 3:51 pm

Hawaii should be in plain and simple. Even the UCI coaches and players thought they were out for sure. Their post game interview after UH beat them were tearful good-byes to their seniors. They were resigned to the fact that they “knew” they were out and their season was done. There was no talk of being selected as even a remote possibility. Everyone but the three stooges had Hawaii penciled in. Criteria? Yeah right. It was all about the money….which is just wrong.

  115. Robin April 23, 2018 4:23 pm

I basically agree with what’s been said about ‘victim blaming’ regarding the snub. To make an analogy, it’s like an Asian student which by a solid majority view and objective measurables being snubbed by a college admissions committee for another student. Then scolding the Asian student for ‘making it close’ and accepting that ‘you gotta working twice as hard’. Asians have been praised for being silent on discrimination and just vowing to work 2X as hard. Is this fair? Do Asians just accept this and work themselves academically to death for the same rewards? This is why Harvard is being sued. UH just got told to ‘know your place’ by the powers that be. And come to think of it I don’t think it helped that UCLA is in the same system as UCI either.

  116. Cindy Luis April 23, 2018 4:33 pm

    http://www.hawaiiwarriorworld.com/?p=45798
    new thread up
Committee said it wasn’t cost of travel. They are flying Harvard to UCLA. I think travel is cheaper HNL to LAX.
as for Irvine’s road wins … they drove to all but three of their matches, basically could have walked across the street to Concordia.
Hawaii should not be penalized for not being able to fly more when they already fly the most of any team in the country. Sorry I’m still upset about this.
