“Rocky” road for baseball ‘Bows

People can get all misty-eyed about “Field of Dreams,” but the best sports movie is “Rocky III.”

To recap: After fighting a bunch of “set-up” fighters to retain his championship, Rocky Balboa fights Clubber Lang, gets beat up badly, doubts himself and then gets the “Eye of the Tiger” to win the rematch.

The lesson: If you want to play tough, you have to schedule tough.

All of which brings us to today’s baseball game between UH and LSU at Alex Box Stadium. The Tigers are ranked, including leading the country in attendance for 22 consecutive seasons. But UH coach Mike Trapasso, who negotiated the three-game series, wanted his team to “experience a great environment.” Iron sharpens iron, as the UH football mantra goes.

“It’s good for us to get away from the Les and into a different environment,” Trapasso said .”It takes guys out of their comfort zone. If you’re going to compete in the Big West, you’re going to have to compete in some tough environments on the road. There’s no tougher environment to go into than Alex Box Stadium. Regardless of what happens, it will be a good opportunity for us.”

An added perk: UH will received a $15,000 appearance fee, which is considered lucrative for a college-baseball series.

Time to face the eye of the Tiger and poke it. Go bows- warriors.

For me, best sports movie of all time was Rudy. Lesson: never give up, never let people tell you that you can’t do something. But I like what Trap is doing. You don’t get better playing junk guys. The only way you get better is to play guys who are better than you. Take your whoopings and learn from it. That’s how you improve. No scared ’em.

What’s really sad is back when we were in the WAC, there was talks of Hawaii joining the Big West and many viewed it as a down grade and said we would dominate every sport.

The only sport to dominate, except this year, is Wahine VBall.  Men’s Bball & Baseball and Wahine Softball and Soccer have really struggled.  Wahine basketball struggled the past 2 seasons.

Like the Fooball team, all other Sports needs to step up and bring back the Pride back to Manoa

Not playing is Chayce Ka’aua, 5-10, & Kekai Rios, 5-11. Does not meet height standards on this road trip.

If you want the truth, this blog is it. 3:00 p.m. HT. Starts in 10 min. Game time at LSU Tigers. 4 time national champions. Today.

I agree. To be fair though now you gotta add Beach vball to that list and after this season whatever the result is Men’s vball too

    Howzit Everybody,

Braddah Big Wave, so true. People definitely thought it was a downgrade for us to join the Big West for all other sports. I also thought we would fare well year in and year out in all sports but baseball. But look now, besides Volleyball, hasn’t been a fun run in the Big West.

  11. KOH I NOR March 9, 2018 3:29 pm

1-1 Hawai’i. HR by Ethan Lopez. Top 2.

Stop pinpointing me from Kaua’i. That’s you guys problem. No one else’s.

  12. jm2375 March 9, 2018 3:33 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!

BigWave & kama – IIRC, Trap regarded the BWC as an UPGRADE.
Remember, some of the UC/CSU campuses are HUGE.

Right now, I would argue that the BWC is the best conference in MVB, with the top 3 ranked teams and 5 of 6 ranked (#12 & 14).

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

  13. KOH I NOR March 9, 2018 3:42 pm

2-1 Hawai’i. Maaki Yamazaki Homered to right field. (Went over) split fastball 3-2 full count. Top 3.

  14. DaveLetterMan March 9, 2018 3:54 pm

    Howzit Tsaiko’s!
Believe at the time UH joined BW, there were a couple of teams ranked in the top ten. Think there was a #1 ranked team. Help us out, ST.

  15. KOH I NOR March 9, 2018 4:00 pm

Kekai Rios is playing. (Taking a bath)

Bottom 4th LSU trailing by 1.

  16. KOH I NOR March 9, 2018 4:13 pm

Top of the 5th Hawai’i hitting. 2-1 Hawai’i in LSU.

I’ll leave now. Got to go over my Card collections. Kidding. I hope Hawai’i wins.

  17. BigWave96744 March 9, 2018 4:14 pm

2 WAC teams (Rice ’03, Fresno St ’08) won the College World Series when Hawaii was member.

During that time only 1 team Big West team (Cal St Fullerton ’04) won it.

I’m not a big follower of MVBall, but I think the conference that the Men’s Vball was in prior to joining the Big West was more competitive

  18. Andrew March 9, 2018 4:18 pm

    17.

The Big West in Men’s Vball has the top three teams in the country though and 2 more in the top 12

  19. BigWave96744 March 9, 2018 4:20 pm

    Last year Men’s Volleyball
    4 of the top 5
    6 of the top 10
    8 of the top 15
    10 of the top 21
were in the same conference as Hawaii

  20. kama krab March 9, 2018 4:28 pm

I think in Men’s VBall, the Big West will be a top conference with Hawaii, Long Beach, and UC Irvine. Baseball for the Big West will always be a top ten RPI league, but everything else really is not the competitive compared to the rest of the nation. We could argue that the Mountain West for most sports would be ideal if not for the crazy travel and subsidies.

  21. Andrew March 9, 2018 4:30 pm

you’re talking about last season when the conference didn’t exist. Also the teams included in your stats are Big West Teams. This season 1/2 of the conference is in the top three. 5/6 of the teams are in the top 12. Big West is the more competitive conference. MPSF is a larger conference and has more teams that are ranked, but also has a lot more teams that aren’t ranked

  22. kama krab March 9, 2018 4:31 pm

But you know, I think as it stands now, the Big West is the best option for Hawaii sports, both budget and travel wise.

The only problem I see is that the Hawaii sports have not been producing high level results lately.

  23. Andrew March 9, 2018 4:36 pm

    23.

Yeah you’d think Hawaii would be the program to beat in the Big West, but that has only been the case in Vball.

  24. Geno Tamayo March 9, 2018 4:53 pm

Dylan Collie will play for BYU football team this upcoming season

  25. BigWave96744 March 9, 2018 4:57 pm

    Not hating, but last year
Current BW Team not counting Hawaii
    1-5: 2 teams
    6-15: 0 team

    MWSF:
    1-5: 1 team
    6-10: 2 teams
    11-16: 2 teams
Also Grand Canyon, which is now in the MWSF was ranked #11

I agree with #23, best conference for Hawaii, and with the shorter travel should be more competitive in all sports

Why is transfer Sarah Muzik eligible to play?

I had no idea she was playing for Colorado State ’til tonight.

    She is batting .472.

    Huzzah VolleyBows!

  34. cappie the dog March 10, 2018 4:23 am

That road win over LSU is already paying dividends for Hawaii. It played a part in helping their RPI jump 83 points(“RPI delta”; movement since March 4) in the WarrenNolan.com interpretation of the RPI.

    Resume-building time.

    C’mon, Bows!

  35. cappie the dog March 10, 2018 4:28 am

SWAC final: Arkansas Pine-Bluff versus Texas Southern.

We see the Golden Lions so much, it’s like rooting for a younger brother.

Even their softball team is in town.

Dylan Collie is an awfully nice bright young guy, but if he did go to Vandy, I can’t imagine him get off the line of scrimmage with the talent of SEC corners …BYU is a good fit.

  38. islandman March 10, 2018 7:54 am

    33. Softball players can transfer without sitting out a year. Same as what Willmon, Jaramillo and Akiona did for the 2016 season. Garcielita transferred in to UH.
Also, volleyball players do not have to sit out a year.
