Rolo fills coaching staff

Mark Weber, who has 37 years of coaching experience, will be the Warriors’ new offensive line coach, the Star-Advertiser learned last night.

The Warriors also hired Ricky Logo as defensive line coach and Andre Allen to coach the receivers. Logo spent the past three seasons at Colorado State. Allen was the offensive coordinator at City College of San Francisco, which has won 10 JC national titles, including six since 2000.

Here’s the skinny on Weber:

> Among his coaching stops were Fresno State (2016, 2004-2005), Utah State (2013-2015), BYU (2007-2012), North Carolina (2006) and UCLA (1997-2003).

> He has success in both the running game (Fresno averaged 227.5 rushing yards per game in 2004) and pass protection (Bulldogs allowed 14 sacks in 13 games in 2005).

> The Warriors’ three-month search was pared to nine finalists, all of whom were interviewed last week.

> Weber coached Logan Mankins, a seven-time Pro Bowl player; Ryan Wendell, who played nine NFL seasons, and 1998 Outland Trophy winner Kris Farris.

> The Warriors ended the 2017 season with no coach older than 38. Since then, they added defensive coordinator Corey Batoon (48) and assistant head coach Mark Banker (61). Weber is 59.

    Ichi?

  2. kapakahi January 16, 2018 6:42 am

Should have recruiting ties in Utah, Cali, and Nevada.

  3. Stephen Tsai January 16, 2018 6:46 am

I love how the S-A inserts a workout video right after the line: “Here’s the skinny on Weber …”

  4. A-House January 16, 2018 6:57 am

as the youngster on TV kept saying, “things are looking up”!

3 down and 2 to go — is there not a 3rd coach, the 10th allowed from 2018, that is still open or will current coach(s) be reassigned to fill this position?

must wonder how 2017 would have turned out with the 3 experienced coaches on board, but let us not change history as history is yet to be recorded for 2018 and beyond.

  5. PONO January 16, 2018 6:59 am

Why didn’t Fresno retain him? I doubt we hired him away for more money.

  6. Stephen Tsai January 16, 2018 7:09 am

    Pono:
He was on DeRuyter’s staff, and they all got let go in 2016.

  7. Stephen Tsai January 16, 2018 7:11 am

    A-House:
The two that they will announce today will be the ninth and 10th assistant coaches.
That will complete the full-time staff.
After that, UH will focus on next year’s grad assistants and interns.

  8. haka January 16, 2018 7:39 am

Like Miss Momi Lomilomi, the new coaches get plenty experience…

  9. A-House January 16, 2018 7:39 am

    ST:

    thanks for the correction!

I must have miscounted the number of “new” coaches versus those retained.

Onward to victory! — sign the recruits!!!!

Mark Weber, take your O line to the beach to run in the sand
and wade in the water to beef up their muscles…and of course,
to enjoy your stint in Hawaii 🙂

  11. burro sabio January 16, 2018 7:45 am

Weber knows the western half, that’s good.

  15. Stephen Tsai January 16, 2018 8:22 am

I think he’s a skosh older than Aranda.

  16. Maddog50 January 16, 2018 8:41 am

A “skosh” meaning Weber started school at Cal Lutheran while Aranda started life! Played against Cal Lutheran all time great LB Brian Kelly, part of New York Giants LB crew the crunch bunch Harry Carson LAwarence Taylor er al.

As we wait for the other shoes to drop, I have a profile For DL coach I’m hoping for. Hope I get what I wish for. GoWarriors!!!!

  24. graham January 16, 2018 10:59 am

So both Weber and Banker were out of coaching last year? I can’t say that I’m too excited about the Weber hire, honestly probably would have preferred Estes.

  25. NotNasti January 16, 2018 12:19 pm

Estes will probably come back as a grad assistant.

  26. DaveLetterMan January 16, 2018 12:27 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!
Possible to have two Stutzman’s on staff?

  27. al January 16, 2018 12:33 pm

I though Estes did his 2 years GA.

BRS could be on the wing?
You know before there was twitter there were little birdies.

  28. Sangamon Keith January 16, 2018 1:17 pm

#24 Banker was still under contact to Nebraska and Weber may have taken the year after 35+ years in coaching to pick and choose which situation he wished to follow this year. Numerous coaches take other work or sit out a year or more between jobs

  29. Haleakala January 16, 2018 1:35 pm

Decades of coaching experience now on the UH staff.

  30. Haleakala January 16, 2018 1:40 pm

Defensive Rixky Logo was born in American Samoa. Go there and bring sone linemen here!

  31. Haleakala January 16, 2018 1:42 pm

Sorry, misspelling. Ricky Logo, defensive line coach.

  32. Na Alii Pride January 16, 2018 1:51 pm

Not the names I had been hearing, but some impressive hires. I always thought that the staff was lacking a veteran. I’d say Banker and Weber fit that bill, and the others bring a lot of D1 coaching experience as well, which I also thought was missing. Good job, Rolo!

  33. clyde January 16, 2018 1:56 pm

#31: Haleakala. Here’s more on coach Logo’s ties to American Samoa. Interesting read:

    http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1990-09-20/sports/1990263023_1_logo-samoa-grandfather

  34. Haleakala January 16, 2018 2:06 pm

    Clyde:
    Interesting story!
So Logo did not pursue either becoming the high priest in American Samoa or joining the FBI. He stayed in football and now he is in Hawaii!

  35. islandman January 16, 2018 2:09 pm

    28. I read that Banker’s contract with Nebraska ended after the 2016 season.

  36. Maddog50 January 16, 2018 2:19 pm

I like all the new additions and I got my wish with Coach Logo. I welcome them and wish them the best in the future. GoWarriors!!!

  37. A-House January 16, 2018 2:20 pm

now that it’s done — my only concern is who will be the OC — as much as I like Brian Smith, I believe there should be another to call plays from the “booth”.

JMHO based on the past 2 years.

  38. BigWave96744 January 16, 2018 3:51 pm

    Logo for Legi

  39. Ipu Man January 16, 2018 4:34 pm

    Ricky Logo, a real prince.
Wonder if his first name comes from Richard,
then he could be called, Richard The Lion Hearted.
Welcome to The Kingdom of Hawaii. 🙂

  40. islandman January 16, 2018 4:34 pm

CCSF where Andre Allen was OC ran a similar offense to the air raid according to an April 26, 2017 article in The Guardsman. But they ran about 60 % of their plays in 2017. Washington St. passed 70 % of their plays. CCSF has sent several players to WSU.

  42. Da Punchbowl Kid January 16, 2018 4:59 pm

    Collie transferring?! Hope not!

It’s great to be recognized as a not bot with one click!

  43. islandman January 16, 2018 5:55 pm

Collie will be a grad student somewhere else.

  44. Kahuna January 16, 2018 6:07 pm

Dylan probably looking for someplace where he can play more. He also endured some pretty tough times here with numerous drops.

With Ursua due back, Kumoku Noa emerging, and Cedric Byrd coming in with some major hype, Collie’s playing time would be cut. I wish he would stick it out but I don’t blame him if he do transfer. He have been a great asset to the team and community and have done a great job representing UH but he need to look out for himself first and foremost.

Wish him and his wife the best.

Can you help me reach my goal by making a $25 donation to the UH Foundation Fund I created for UH Football recruiting–see below link.
If 2000 fans do this, we will raise $50,000. So far, I got 303 donors (almost $7600), so only 1697 more donors to go–each donor spot represents $25.

After donating, text me your name to 415-324-0585 or email your receipt to: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com so I can add it below (if you don’t mind):

Warrior head football coach Nick Rolovich new staff resume looks real promising with a lot of experiencing from each of the new hires.
Now with his full staff, I am sure their out in the field recruiting, especially locally.
Some of our top local high school football players who have received many offers from top mainland schools, would they now seriously of staying home and play for our Warrior football team? Would any of the newly, very experienced new Warrior football coaches convinced these kids to stay home?

  55. Ipu Man January 17, 2018 7:07 am

#51 Big Wave, very sad to hear. Your link appreciated.
“Hilinski’s most memorable outing came in the second week of the season when he led Washington State from a 21-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Boise State 47-44 in triple overtime. Hilinski threw for 240 yards and three touchdowns coming off the bench, and was carried off the field after the victory.” Hope Angels came and carried him to heaven. RIP young man.
