Batoon named defensive coordinator

The deal was finalized today to officially hire Corey Batoon as the Warriors’ defensive coordinator.

Batoon brings:

> Experience: He has coached for 26 years, the past year as Florida Atlantic’s co-defensive coordinator. He also coached at Mississippi. At 49, Batoon will be the oldest member of the UH coaching staff. That’s important because it means he knows a prospect’s father or uncle.

> Recruiting: Nick Rolovich praised Batoon’s diligence in recruiting. Rolo has known about Batoon for about 10 years. When Rolo was at Nevada, o-line coach Darrin Hiller spoke highly of Batoon. Hiller and Batoon are friends.

> Answers: The word on the street is Batoon is a problem solver. That’s key because games don’t always go according to script. He also has a background coaching different defensive fronts.

> Local ties: Batoon’s father is Sol Batoon, a long-time Hawaii coach.
Batoon also is a Saint Louis School graduate. He will be the third Crusader on the staff, joining quarterbacks coach/pass-game coordinator Craig Stutzmann, and defensive backs coach Jacob Yoro.

Your coaching staff needs recruiters. •Inner city LAX, San Diego, and Oakland. •San Diego, Orange County, Valley, Northern Cal. •Poly’s from Cali, Texas, Utah, Samoa, Tonga, and New Zealand. Also someone with access to Austrailia.

Cory Batoon should be added to the staff. He has been instrumental in putting ‘Ole Miss at the top of the recruiting standings in the SEC

  16. DaveLetterMan December 30, 2017 7:16 am

    Morning Tsaikos!
Negative comments by Mississippi fans don’t bother me. Batoon must be a good coach if the Kiffen brothers wanted him at FAU. Sometimes a change in scenery reinvigorates a person.

  17. burro sabio December 30, 2017 8:38 am

You do realized that this occurred in the SEC. Agree with DLM.

  18. A-House December 30, 2017 9:01 am

as the chubby adorable little fella consistently said on TV, “things are looking up” for UH defense

we will know soon if Batoon will bring along some other coaches or will Rolo put some clamps on who he wants as defensive coaches — me tinks it’s better to allow the DC to select his own staff and would like to see former UH players as part of his staff — especially, the DL and safety positions.

    yep, “things are looking up”!!!!!

  19. Old School Dave December 30, 2017 9:14 am

Welcome, Coach Batoon! Looking forward to this spring and seeing how the D will develop. He’ll be the youngest coach on staff at 49. Previous UH staffs had a number of AARP card members, I recall.

Watching Coach Batoon’s Ole Miss practice video, he reminds me a lot of former USC & Seahawks DBs coach Rocky Seto in his style and mannerisms.

Saw that Boise State lost their veteran D-line coach to Arkansas. Wazzu is looking for a new DC.

  20. islandman December 30, 2017 9:27 am

Our offense has to pick up next season. We averaged only 18.9 pts per MW game and 22.8 for all games.
We allowed 33.5 pts per MW game and 33.9 for all games.

    Aranda’s defense in 2010 allowed 25.5 pts per game, 29.1 in 2011.
So less than 4 TD’s a game is maybe a realistic expectation ?
Boise St allowed 22.9 pts and Fresno St. only 17.9 in 2017 .

  21. islandman December 30, 2017 9:36 am

    20. You meant the oldest ?

  22. islandman December 30, 2017 10:41 am

  24. winning December 30, 2017 12:34 pm

I guess Washington’s DC is on his way out and I can see why. Porous D-unacceptable by
Chris Peterson’s standard. Ditto for UH! As Austin Powers once said in his movie “Yeah Baby Yeah”. And to quote this particular fat “Manju Head” once said “everything gooood!”

  25. H-Man December 30, 2017 12:57 pm

Interesting. New DE/DT recruits….good ones….they create pass rush to disrupt passing offenses….Batoon gets credit. Sometimes right place, right time.

  26. Lowtone123 December 30, 2017 1:41 pm

The defense, while aggressive, didn’t get to the QB thus leaving the secondary vulnerable against the pass and left gaping holes versus the run. A change at DC was inevitable, whether Legi stayed or not. When Ursua went down we lost our big play guy, a guy who could stretch defenses and could run after the catch. I was hoping Ewaliko would fill that role but it never materialized. The offense became too dependent on DSJ and short passes and had no downfield threat.

  27. al December 30, 2017 2:04 pm

    24…what????

  28. Old School Dave December 30, 2017 2:27 pm

#23 – Islandman: Ooops! My bad. Meant the oldest assistant on Rolo’s staff. Thanks!

  29. Duster December 30, 2017 4:20 pm

A local guy who went away and made his bones in the college coaching profession. He has done it for 26 years, so he must be doing something right. Coaches without the drive or ability would have washed out long before then. Has DC experience. What’s not to like? I love it.

No big deal that he did not play or coach at UH. It may be a blessing since there will be no hint of inbreeding of coaching philosophy/strategy/scheming. There still will be defensive experience and knowledge derived from UH with Abe, so it’s all good.

  30. burro sabio December 30, 2017 8:23 pm

#28 – you know the deal mr. al, people want to move forward but keep looking to the past for the answers.

It’s commendable that Tom has established this fund. It’s nice. But the biggest impact to the program will be at the gate. Need to see big crowds at Aloha Stadium again. Maybe not 40,000, but 30,000 would be a good target. Winning and having an exciting offense can get that done. The 2017 team was predictable and frankly, boring. Rolo vows to change that. We’ll see. Jury still out.

    coaching staff:

wonder what changes Rolo will make on the offensive side of the team

he does not seem in a hurry to get his staff fully stocked and continue the recruiting process — especially keeping in touch with commitments who have not signed an LOI

many memories from the 2007/Sugar Bowl article in today’s paper — can only speculate what would have happened if Colt decided to turn pro — many lives were forever changed with his decision and the “ripples” will continue on for a long, long time

  39. boolakanaka December 31, 2017 9:13 am

38 Ayn Rand ended up alone and on Medicaid and receiving social security checks—so much for all that bs rhetoric on meritocracy and effete elitism.

The vows in today’s paper are what Ferd hopes Rolo will be vowing for 2018.
