I like it that Robyn brought the entire team on this trip. Good for morale and experience building. And having Kalei Greely in Seattle with the team lifts team spirit. Isn’t she the “mama” of the team. Can’t leave mama behind. Hoping for a good showing. Go Wahine !!!

29. I envy you that you could watch Cal Poly. I tried on the UCLA network but nothing worked. Meanwhile Cal Poly won the second set 25-18 and Utah squeaked by 25-23 in a hard fought first set against Purdue, really exciting match. Glad to hear that UH is ahead against Illinois on the third set.

Oh well, still a fine debut season for Robyn and her coaching staff. Time to get out on the road and recruit some outside hitters who can terminate.

What a great comeback team…You make us Proud! Coach Robyn will do a tremendous job and I predict one day she will win a National Championship. We are just a few excellent athletes away from making that come to fruition. Our MB’s Maglio and Burns did very well. Granato had a very good 3rd and 4th set with her hitting. MCKenna Ross and Faith Maafala were the 2 game changers IMHO….Very very excellent coaching adjustment by Robyn. That alone shows me she will bring a National Championship back to Hawaii nei…This has been a Memorable 5 set “Season!”
my opinion, i was disappointed in the way Mags played, it was either she was well scouted by Illinois or tonight just wasn’t her night. i didn’t watch the first two sets, but idk it was crazy seeing this side of Maglio, it was almost like seeing that same player from last season against LBSU at the pyramid. but whatever, still loved and enjoy watching her play these past four years, definitely will be missed next season but i must say that Natasha is gonna be fun to watch next season. overall, this team once again despite losing, played with a lot of fight & most importantly a lot of heart. i wish they won, but it’s ok because i just enjoyed watching them fight and represent our state well.
so considering it was only Robyn’s first season, i thought she did a well…phenomenal job, given the huge shoes she was left to fill. Mahalo & Aloha to our wonderful Seniors whom will be greatly missed. Mahalo to the rest of the coaching staff as well. looking forward to August and what Robyn and company will do now that they have control.

62. She was only had the most points for the entire match for both teams, was well scouted and tracked constantly under pressure which opened things up for the pins,. Not to mention how hard she worked pin to pin blocking and lots of up balls off the net. You go ahead and be disappointed. Geez. By the way her ankle is not 100%.
Nice to read the good sportsmanship of the bloggers, sharing sympathy and encouragement for the UH coaches and players unlike past blogs where they blamed and criticized coaches and players. Kudos to you all. I agree that the team came a long way and I was so glad UH made the playoffs despite losing in the first round. Otherwise, I would have felt bad that Cal Poly killed all their hopes, as I am rooting for both teams.
As for Cal Poly I predict a loss to UCLA tomorrow night (no doubt UCLA will win today). Cal Poly had fewer blocks than Denver, but more aces and Torrey van Winden carried them through with a match high of 20 kills on either side. For sure UCLA will target Torrey with a blocking scheme, not only because she is the #1 hitter in the Cal Poly team, but also wanting revenge that she left the team for greener pastures – literally as she preferred to live in a more country atmosphere and did not like the big city – as I had heard from interviews granted to the media there. Without her, Hawaii would have won the Big West Championship.
First loss in the first round that I can remember and I don’t like it at all:( oh well hopefully Coach Robyn will be able to bring in solid transfers, wahine need a right side player and a libero and anothet outside hitter that can pass.
Pretty much how this whole season went… can’t win those 5-gamers, when we NEEDED to!!!

RAMS and the staff, will have to seriously evaluate how they will recruit. Might have to influx some foreign players like how the men’s team is, CW has the recipe for success, should may want to follow it??

Mags had a great career thought in the 5th there were a few times if she tipped she would have gotten kills instead of blocked, oh well.
The serving was tough but also the service errors costly.
Again, there were too many predictable, trap sets in the middle especially with the adjustments IL made with two blockers tracking Mags everywhere she went. It was the work that the middles did to open things up for the pins to look better in the later sets. Still credit ti Granato for working her way back into the match. If ILL didn’t camp out on Granato, they camped out on Mags. This is where we really needed more supporting cast. IL had several players they could go to when their top point scorer cooled off in the later sets as well.
They were doubling up Maglio all night. She played very well. We needed more from some of our pin hitters. Great season though. Going to miss this group of seniors.

Loved seeing Robyn’s emotional coaching. Especially compared to the stoic style of Chris Tamas. Not saying one is better than the other, but her passion for the game, her team, and players is more than evident.

Seeing the ncaa tournament matches , Pitt has great foreign players and Miami had a 6’6 russian right side who gave Florida problems, Hope coach Robyn decides to get a foreign player or two and some transfers.
60. not curse. wahine was losing steam even before finishing fourth set. they ran out of it come fifth set. dug a hole early in set one and set two just to exert and expend too much power in the 3rd set.
the story of the season for na wahine is – instead of digging the ball, its digging a hole first and playing catch up. that obviously is not a good idea during ncaa tournament time.
and if its not playing catching up, its falling asleep when they are ahead. 6 five setters during the season is an unnecessary no-no.
71. 5 setters, unnecessary to have 6 of those for the season especially if you have to catch back up to win them. or fall asleep and cause them.
73. service errors is what done them in. illinois simply ignored aces and just focused on attacking and blocking.
oh well best to coach robyn and na wahine for next season. need to bring more and bring it more!

Thank you Seniors for all your hard work and best of luck in your futures. I can only hope , that coaching staff expands their thought process and and expand playing time to rest of team!!! I will get flack on this , but staff went with what was there (a small , unproved opp , slow starting OH’s , DS’s with no range, and some backrow players that can’t dig/pass!) Not really sure of cause , but Wahine lost a lot of talent , with Lipscomb and Smith leaving , decommits of Misraje and Light–to name a few!!! Staff/Robyn mentioned , but did not fully follow through, with trying Sophia at opp(should have used Casey there) . Can only hope that Trinity and Kirsten , get playing time at OH , next season. Running the modified (6-2) was fun and could work in Big West , but not against the BIGS (as seen versus Illinois) and though setting was good , too many lapses versus some defenses! Ross is a PLUS , but team needs tons of consistence in DEFENSE (passing/digging) and serving (if not spin-serving , try serving like Faith–remember how Veronica Lima , Heather Bown served)! Again , BEST OF WISHES to the SENIORS (esp. Kalei) for your dedication and may happiness follow you–same to COACHING STAFF— IMUA
I loved the fight in this team. As a Wisconsin fan who watches a lot of BigTen VB, but who knows a LOT less than most people on this page, I would say that height was the difference. The BigTen teams are only getting taller. Wisconsin alone has a 6-8 MB this year who is crazy athletic and they’ll have a 6-7 OH to go with her next year.
I read lots of posts on here about recruiting for next year, but Wisconsin and other BigTen teams have pretty much filled their 2021 classes and they’re recruiting 2022 and 2023 players. That said, we picked up a great libero transfer from Michigan this year, so transfers are definitely out there.
HI has history and they have a future. Robyn turned this team into a consistent winner over the year. HI players have a history of being noticed for national team. Combine that with the best and most knowledgeable fans in the world and I really think you’re on the right course.
Credit to Robyn and the coaches for giving a lot of the previous reserve players a chance to play during the season such as Gianna, Ma’afala, Ross and Burns (earlier in the season).
Tough loss but it does not negate the great progress and determination that the team has made. They sustained the consecutive record of 25+ straight years qualifying for the tournament despite lacking the fire power of last year. The coaching staff did an amazing job especially with the middles, serve and defense. To our seniors – you will all be missed. It was so great watching you. All the very best and thank you.

Height, yes. But speaking of recruiting, I can’t think of a better example than Minnesota. The Golden Gophers boasts a slew of young talent. For example, their top four hitters are three freshmen and a sophomore. Stephanie Samedy (No. 5 rated player in 2017), a 6-2 true freshman opposite from Florida hit at a 4.11 k/s clip. She is followed by sophomore Alexis Hart, a 6-0 sophomore OH from Missouri with a 3.72 k/s average; redshirt freshman Regan Pittman, a 6-5 MB from Kansas with a 2.23 k/s average and true freshman Jasmyn Martin, a 6-2 OH from Texas with a 1.92 k/s average. The 2017 recruiting class also includes Sara Nielsen, a 5-11 setter from Illinois, named the 69th best player in the nation. They have the bases covered with youth. 2018 recruiting class. I can’t imagine what it will look like, but one thing for sure, they are simply stacking the deck with more talent.
Is it realistic to think that the Wahine can recruit talent close to the Big Ten teams, given the money those athletic departments have and their facilities,etc.? Although we have the SSC.
Just like we can’t expect Rolovich to recruit like the Big Ten football teams. Even the other MW football teams have much better facilities than UH.
Maybe compared to the other Big West teams, we can recruit well.

For Coach Ah Mow, I hope making the tournament doesn’t become the reward itself. In other words, I hope Hawaii doesn’t stop being the Gonzaga of women’s volleyball, the outlier in a college sports world dominated by the Power 5.
Wahine need to do what ucla is doing to Torrey van winden, serve her short everytime /plus tip at her / make her pass and not able to get ready back in time to hit it hard. sealy had the same strategy with Nikki and it always worked, working against van Winden also.
Yep short serve to Torrey is wrecking Cal Poly, they are done.

OMG, BYU is the only non-Power 5 school to make it to the Sweet 16. Every year there are less and less non-Power 5 schools represented past the sub-regionals. :*(
If we can’t get the blue chip Americans, gotta get TALL, durable, athletic foreigners. Illinois and the Power 5 schools are getting TALLER and stronger, ummm and TALLER… Yes, TALLER.
Can’t wait for the men’s team to play! We have probably the best shot ever to win a National Championship now. Looks like Stein is really used to playing outside now. Rado has the OPP position all to himself and is killing it. Men’s team is getting TALLER and so is our basketball team next year! Whoohoo!!!

Just watch the Beach team scrimmage. They are Scary Good…IMO way better than last years team and last years team was very good going far in the NCAA’s in Alabama. The Canadian girl looks like a Pro! The returnees are in tip top shape. In other words, there will be some great players not playing in the 5 Team rotation. Wish our indoor girls were built like them. All the Beach girls super athletic girls and in phenomenal shape…I think only Emily will be needed for this team…The rest can concentrate for next years indoor and train their behinds off
Everyone needs to go watch these girls. So many talented players. Carly Kan, for example, is such an intellectual, crafty, athlethic OTT player for her 5’10 size. Gosh she is exceptional for doing such a great job for the Missouri Tigers when she played indoor and made 3rd Team All American 2 years ago. Btw, Missouri got into the Sweet 16 this year (indoor) beating Kansas and home team Wichita State. Wish Carly stayed home for indoors back then, but glad to have such a Humble and Terrific Athlete on our Beach Team last year and this season among many other returnees and newcomers..
One more thing I have to mention is that Setter from Illinois is absolutely great. I love the way she sets and moves on the court. She was a very key element in Hawaii’s and Washington’s lost.
Encouraged that this program is on the right track and no question will be competitive. Also think Robyn has learned a lot this season as well and she will be a great player’s coach.
Angelica and staff have obviously done a great job. Next year will be something special for fans to look forward to and you know these returning players will not disappoint.
Shouldn’t be dogging Washington. Their fans, wearing their purple t-shirts and holding ti-leaves, were cheering for the Wahine in its match with Illinois.
Illinois is peaking at the right time. But they were swept by Michigan State 3-0 the last time they played. I hope their match is televised. Should be a good one to watch.
Those UW fans were cheering for the wahine because they thought the wahine would be an easier match up.

Those are pretty much the same combo’s I have been playing with…not necessarily my top choices…partly my choices, partly what I think Hall will do.
Hall likes the “typical AVP team (6’0, 6’1- split blockers/defenders). Or if you have a big, exceptional blocker like Maglio you put her with a big (Fitterer is similar at 6’2” and a MB indoors). Hall rarely puts the same team together again but might make the exception for Kan/Homayun.

I can see 1. and 2. Interchanges depending on the match up being played or until a clear front runner emerges. The same thing for 3. And 4. And 6. And 7.
I also thought perhaps Martin/Monkhouse. Monkhouse has played as a split blocker/defender but not as dominant a blocker as Maglio. The only thing is that might weaken the pairings putting Ozee and Weaver together. The overall pairsihjt be stronger with the above pairings.
I would have liked to see Homayun with a big. She has played with Maglio for a couple of matches before Spieler and Maglio were paired together. They had good chemistry and Homayun plays well with a big. Kan throws a bit of a wrench in the system because she is a small
But plays more of a hitter and does better with a really Beach experienced player like Homayun.
She (Kan) did play a summer match with Ozee, so you never know.
I personally feel Fitterer will play because you are usually looking to play a graduate student brought on for one year.
It would be nice to see Bunn and Liyties crack the lineup but not sure if it will happen. As previously stated, there’s lots of talent and some good pairs will be left out. I think Napolean might fall into that category. He may also want to redshirt her to give her a year of development (and will step in once Kan exhausts her eligibility). I see her as a similar player to Kan.

Pepperdine also has a top lineup and ICLA will be in the mix with FSU. Lots of good teams everywhere this season! It looks like a decent schedule and pumped UH hosting the BW.

everytime i see Napolean play I am just more impressed with her. I see her being very successful in the 5th flight, opponents will be surprised how powerful her hits are.
I am also liking the idea of Martin/Napoleon (for maybe the 2019 season)
I agree, I could see Napolean with an experienced beach player like Zalopany at the number 5 slot.
It’s a good problem to have so much depth but also probably tough to keep players around and happy if they aren’t in the top flights. Luyties and Bunn in particular might be expecting playing time this season. Hope we can keep from losing players to transferring out.
Not too add more players but I can’t help but think that Sky Williams and Sophia Howling would be great on the beach as bigs/blockers (in future seasons) but they would need to start training now and redshirt like Maglio did.
Plus playing beach would improve their overall game for indoor, not sure they or coach Robyn has any interest though.
Cal Poly gaining Duke transfer per VolleyTalk next season, Mustangs will be big again.
