I think this is a very doable bracket. No body we can’t beat in this group! Ill.will not be easy and Washington will home court advantage but bring it on!

Yes, we’re in! Now, has anyone seen Illinois in action? lol They have 10 losses but don’t know much about their schedule. Also, seems the AQ from the Big West always has a tough bracket/ host team. Is the reason for this logistical or just random? Anyways we got there, congrats ‘Bows!
I wondered if the team knew ahead of time who they were playing. As I was walking toward the arena to watch basketball at about 3:50 pm, I saw Granto, Gong, Castillo, Williams and Burns heading AWAY from the SSC. I thought they might have gathered someplace by then to get word of who they playing. That fact that they wandering around minutes before the announcement made me think they knew what was up before we knew,
Anyway…..good matchup for the Bows……if we play like we played couple of weeks ago, I like our chances.
Illinois has a great setter and one great middle but is definitely beatable but wahine need great matches from mags and Granato of course.

1. Thet person needs to do research before it posts false things, hawaii beat 12th seeded Baylor and did more than enough to get a bid.
Hawaii will be heading to a familiar place for the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament: Seattle.
The Rainbow Wahine (20-7) will take on Illinois (21-10) in a first-round match on Friday at the University of Washington. The Huskies (24-7) are seeded No. 8 and face LIU Brooklyn (20-9).
It is the 24th consecutive year that Hawaii has made the NCAA tournament field. The Wahine have only missed the postseason once, in 1992 when finishing 15-12 and the field was 32.
Hawaii also was sent to UW for the opening rounds in 2010, 2012 and 2014. The Wahine lost to the host Huskies in the second rounds all three years.
Friday’s match is at 3 p.m. HST. Should the Wahine advance, Saturday’s second round is at 5 p.m. HST.
Cal Poly v UCLA in the second round. Now there’s some drama!
Proud of Coach Robyn and her staff and these young ladies for persevering after an 0-3 start, and now their reward is in their grasp. LET’S GO BOWS!

I like both Hawaii’s and Cal Poly’s draws, at least in the subregionals. Both have a shot at advancing, if they play well, IMHO.

This Illinois is very good. They’ve defeated good tournament teams in the preseason and are battle-tested from the Big 10. Hawaii has to be firing on all cylinders against the Fighting Illini
Congrats to the wahines! In 30+ years of watching wahine volleyball, you rank as one of my favorites because you guys fought so hard and made such great strives as a team – the serving, the defense, and the middle attack.
And to Robin & staff, your steadfast belief in the players and the program is beyond stellar. Thank you all for your dedication and personal sacrifice to make this team what it is today. Just tremendous! UH and the wahine program could not have picked a better coaching staff in the country to replace Dave – bar none.

16. You’re right. That is if Cal Poly wins the first round against Denver. I kind of expected that Cal Poly would be sent to UCLA. I wonder how Torrey van Winden will feel like playing against her former school should Cal Poly advance to the second round. I don’t know how good Denver, tough. Hope I can watch those matches as well as UH.
As for UH being sent to the Washington subregional, this is a team that was the only one beside Penn State to have beaten Stanford. Sorry, but I’m afraid that Washington will beat UH a fourth time and send the Wahine home. At least UH won’t have to face #1 Penn State in the regional.

Well at least there’s nothing to complain about bracket wise this year. First time having that feeling like the team is jus glad to be anywhere in the tournament. Illinois will be tough but at least UH has been playing some of its better game lately.
I will gladly eat my words. I did not think the NCAA would award the Wahine a chance but glad they did.
Secondly, if UH had won the Big West, they could have possibly sent to UCLA, right? I hope Robyn has some tricks up her sleeve that other teams have not seen and underestimate Hawaii.

Very important for this wahine team to win the first round match against Illinois and perhaps upset Washington in the second round.
it will let the volleyball world know that while Dave Shoji is not the coach anymore hawaii is still the premiere mid major that can knock off big opponents ( along with BYU) and that should help Coach Robyn attract good transfers for next year and good recruits in the future. Hope we never hear about the NIVC ever again.

The Anteaters, who finished third in the Big West, are slated to face Sacramento State for a first-round matchup on Tuesday, November 28 at 4:30 p.m. in Stockton, Calif., with the winner advancing to the second round to battle either host Pacific or Boise State. This marks the first postseason appearance for UC Irvine since 2004, the same year current UCI Head Coach Ashlie Hain was the starting setter for the Anteaters.
The NIVC is a 32-team tournament that features 17 programs with 18 or more wins and five schools that finished first in regular-season conference play (Albany, North Texas, Sacramento State, Stephen F. Austin, and Maryland Eastern Shore). Additionally, six schools in the field are ranked or receiving votes in the latest Volleyball Magazine Mid-Major poll with No. 12 North Texas, No. 16 UC Irvine, No. 20 SMU, No. 23 Sacramento State, No. 24 Rice, and Texas State (RV).
In all, 23 conferences will be represented with both the Big 12 and American featuring three teams each. The Sun Belt, Mountain West, SEC, Horizon, and C-USA will each have two schools competing. The SWAC, America East, MAC, Big South, Patriot, Missouri Valley, Summit, West Coast, Big Sky, Ohio Valley, Southland, ACC, Colonial, Big West, Southern, and MEAC with one.
I was hoping Irvine would go to the NIVC if offered. Given their RPI and record this year, it makes some sense for them to take the bid.
I hope there’s some way Kalei can attend. I can’t imagine the Coach can justify bringing an injured player, and not sure what the NCAA rules are about anyone paying her way. Maybe the booster club? Didn’t the band somehow go last time?
Was hoping to see a reaction of the wahine seeing their selection and sub regional location on the news, those are always interesting.
Remember one time they got sent to washington and some of the wahine looked very angry and then there was that year where the wahine got sent to texas a&m and they were so happy.

On the other hand, Hawaii came up rather fast on the screen and there was no mention of them being one of the bubble teams like others. Like other years, after winning the Big West, it took almost the latter part of the show for Hawaii’s number to be called. I thought I was going to wait to the last minute to hear Hawaii’s name. Maybe “suspense” is better than “expectation”. I cannot wait til Friday to see what our BOWS can do!

Took a peek at Illinois’ record. They’ve beaten a lot of good teams, but their key-signature win that reflects how good they are is their win against Minnesota. Their outsides are tall and attack seems balanced. It’s a tough first round match for the Wahine, but I am glad it’s a team from the Big 10.
33. I believe they allow 15 players to travel for the NCAA Tournament. That means the starters, Koelsch, Granato, Burns, Iosia, Kahakai, Castillo and Maglio, plus the regular subs, Guinasso, Anderson, Ma’afala and the primary backups, Howling, Williams, Sibley and Ross. Plus Greeley. Gong and Okino probably won’t travel.
Kalei’s injury will make it difficult for her to travel. Someone with a broken hand, dislocated finger, bum shoulder, sprain ankle or something like that would not be that hard to travel but a big bulky brace after an ACL surgery is another story.
Not a lot of seats available at the last minute and even less seats open for a 6-2 girl who need to have room to keep her leg straight.
Tough situation for Kalei to be in.

Not making excuses, but I think we will really miss Kalei. She had shored up the back row as of late. We still have a secret weapon in Ma’aflala. Castillo needs to concentrate on every play but she can be as good as anybody. We have our three all-American types in Noreen,Emily and Savannah. We have Burns improving every match. Kendra has also progressed. What we really need for the real McKenna G. to step up and stay up. I think she can. Regardless however the turns out I have really enjoyed this season because of the growth of all concerned.
What a great opportunity, like a 2nd chance. No way can anyone say the Wahine got the short straw, as when they were perennial automatic qualifiers. Like this reverse mojo!
Loved their energy this year. Loved how Robyn handled the interviews! Chance to really build & depen the foundation for next year. This experience will be invaluable. Go give um heck Wahine. Like their chances to advance in this regional. Nothing to lose, nothing to prove, steady out from the 1st set and just win!

My mistake. Yes, we did beat Baylor in 5. But that’s all we did. Beating up the rest of the BWC (if we’re not champion) imo, that’s something expected. Wasn’t sure if that would be enough , 39thRPI , and was pleasantly surprised we got in. GoBows!!!
A win over 12th seeded Baylor was more than enough. LSU and high point got bids and they didn’t even have any wins in the top 40. Lets put it this way if the wahine had beaten Cal Poly twice in the fifth sets, cal poly would only have a win over 16 seed wichita state and nothing else of note, and they would have still gotten in.
Hope the match is televised friday, would hate to have to watch Uw’s livestream.

48. RPI was king this year. NC State (RPI 49) was the only one I believe that got a bid jump, over North Texas (RPI 47). Maryland (RPI 52) and Iowa (RPI 50) were south of the max scrutiny line and their odds of making it were less than 50%. This year, teams from RPI ~45 to 52 were at high risk of not getting an at large, and it is rare for any team with RPI south of 52 to get an at large,
Over the years the committee has been seen as not consistent in its methodology. There is confusion over how they come to a decision. There is a lot of discussion about top 25 and top 50 wins being a selection criteria, but the NCAA pre-champ makes clear that top 25 and top 50 wins are already factored into the RPI. First as just regular wins in the raw RPI, then in the adjusted RPI there are bonus points added to teams RPI score for top 25 and top 25-50 wins, as well as a strength of schedule bonus for those teams with a strong non-conference strength of schedule. So the adjusted RPI already captures top 25, top 50 wins, and non-conference SOS. Calling out top 25 and top 50 wins as though they weren’t already accounted for, and then using them again as a primary selection criteria, is a compounding of error in my opinion. What the pre-champ manual really says is that RPI, H2H, Common Opponents, and Significant W/L comparisons are the primary selection criteria. Top 25, 50, 100, etc wins are only provided as an evaluative tool, not a criteria. So the question then is what is meant by significant wins and losses. I believe the best way to interpret that is a best good win (RPI)/worst bad loss (RPI) comparison. Unlike top 25 wins and SOS, that criteria is not directly reflected in RPI score. NC State had a better significant win/significant loss record than North Texas. They had more top 50 wins and losses than North Texas, but also they played a significantly more difficult schedule. Likely the committee decided that NC State was more tournament ready, even if slightly behind North Texas in RPI.

As for the RPI, the important factor was how many automatics went to the conference winner.
As mentioned previously, Hawaii’s RPI was 23rd out of the 32 non-AQ teams. IMHO had thought was going to be enough of a cushion.
Crosson at Cal Poly and I had laughed a few weeks ago about where they’d be sent. given the NCAA’s regional-when-convenient philosphy, he thought USC … think UCLA’s win over USC changed things for the comittee. Bruins RPI moved to 17 today.
