Hey Cindy, I might have been off on my calculations after looking at the UH records online, but I thought Kahakai only needed 12 tonight to surpass Ka’aihue?

    Thank you Cindy.

  25. Cindy Luis November 18, 2017 7:14 pm

    21. SEE 18 and 22

  26. Big Island volleyball fan November 18, 2017 7:20 pm

So far Kahakai has 11 digs. She would need 17 more to catch up with Kai’ihue. The only way that would happen is if the match went to five sets. No doubt that Kahakai would prefer the match to end in a sweep and not make second place in the career digs category.

Service errors plagued Irvine, the major reason Irvine lost both sets. Give credit to Hawaii’s great defense. No one mentioned the great defensive play of Hawaii which gave them set point, one great hustling dig and then another one by Kahakai. Just amazing! If this were played in Hawaii, I’m sure the announcers would have selected this one as the cool play of the match.

  27. Cindy Luis November 18, 2017 7:28 pm

    26. defense has been great. Radio did a nice job describing Granato’s dig sliding into the bleachers.

  28. Cindy Luis November 18, 2017 7:31 pm

    UC Riverside sweeps UCSB, 25-20, 25-18, 25-20

    wahine on a 4-0 run. it’s 11-7. TO UCI

  30. Cindy Luis November 18, 2017 7:38 pm

Granato with the overpass, it’s 18-12. TO UCI.

  31. Cindy Luis November 18, 2017 7:45 pm

Not good. Greeley down, holding her knee. It’s 23-14

  32. greenthumb November 18, 2017 7:46 pm

    Does that gym get hot?

  33. HawaiiMongoose November 18, 2017 7:47 pm

So sad to see Kalei end her career that way. At least she went down swinging.

  34. Big Island volleyball fan November 18, 2017 7:48 pm

    27. So you listened to the radio instead of watching it live on Prime Ticket, or did you watch the match and listen to the radio the same time? That’s a difficult if not impossible feat as the broadcasts are not synchronized.

  35. Cindy Luis November 18, 2017 7:49 pm

    Koelsch ends it 25=16.

  36. cappie the dog November 18, 2017 7:51 pm

    I was wrong.

    This was a great hire.

Post-season, or no post-season, this was a successful season.

  37. Cheeseball November 18, 2017 7:55 pm

The Wahine look much better than when I was able to watch them earlier this year. They might be just outside the typical RPI cutoff, but they pass the eyeball test and they definitely have the pedigree.

The defense was crazy good at times today. As a Wisconsinite who mostly watches Big Ten VB nowadays, I miss seeing that aspect of the game with the super-tall front-row players.

  38. Cindy Luis November 18, 2017 7:56 pm

    34. I am in the office doing a desk shift. was listening to radio, unable to watch TV. keeping my own running stats and just finished our breaking news story.
we have a stringer at the match so I don’t have to do the rewrite as I did for most of the away matches.

  39. Cindy Luis November 18, 2017 7:57 pm

here is our breaking news story
Senior middle Emily Maglio put down 11 kills and Hawaii notched its 24th straight 20-win season with a 25-20, 26-24, 25-16 sweep of UC Irvine in the final Big West match of the season tonight in Irvine, Calif.
It was the 21st time this year that Maglio reached double digits in kills. Senior libero Savanah Kahakai added 15 digs for the Rainbow Wahine (20-7, 14-2), becoming the third player in program history to have 1,400 digs; at 1,403, Kahakai trails only Elizabeth Ka’aihue (1,416) and Kim Willoughby (1,440) on the career list.
Sophomore middle Natasha Burns added 10 kills with just one error. Sophomore setter Norene Iosia recorded her 15th double-double of the year (19 assists-18 digs).
For the Anteaters (21-7, 9-6), junior opposite Harlee Kekauoha finished with 12 kills. UCI is now 0-38 all-time against Hawaii.
The Wahine lost senior Kalei Greeley late in Set 3 to an injury to her left leg.

  40. cappie the dog November 18, 2017 7:58 pm

Watching Kalei Greeley interact with those two little kids on Senior Night, I thought: This is how the world ought to be.

  41. Cindy Luis November 18, 2017 8:00 pm

    32. I haven’t found the Bren warm. why?

  42. Cindy Luis November 18, 2017 8:00 pm

    40. those were her two youngest brothers. She is really good with kids.

  43. Lori November 18, 2017 8:03 pm

Great season. Will keep my fingers crossed for a post season

What are the odds of Maafala becoming the setter next year with Iosia a hitter? They can both still be on the court at the same time. Maafala just brings something to the floor.

  44. greenthumb November 18, 2017 8:10 pm

41, thanks. At least two of her teammates were fanning above Greeley’s face when she was still down on the hardwood. It didn’t seem like they were trying to block the TV cameras. Wishing her the best.

  45. cappie the dog November 18, 2017 8:20 pm

Hawaii women’s volleyball are such perennials.

Don’t they get the benefit of the doubt?

I remember Les Muramaki’s last post-season team was only nine games above .500 and they got in.

  46. shar November 18, 2017 8:22 pm

I found out too late that the game was televised on Channel 31. The next time Spectrum says it is on Channel 1082 or whatever that number was…I was scrolling on channel 56 and saw that the game was on channel 31. Wahine, thanks for an extraordinary season.

I hate that a lot of Hawai’i fans’ responses to a loss is to fire the coach. Surely, Robyn deserved at least 3 seasons. It is hard enough being a first year coach with a first year coaching staff. The only people who held their positions prior to August are Jimbo and the trainer, who is excellent but whose name escapes me now. This would have been stressful enough. Add on: Shoji’s successor, fans expectations, injuries etc. and then to hear that you should be fired. I would have quit.

Thank you Robyn, Coaching staff, Medical support, Wahines for a spectacular season

  47. Cindy Luis November 18, 2017 8:31 pm

    43. wouldn’t put money on it. Iosia is too good of a setter. Agree that Ma’afala does bring something and that modified 6-2 does work well.

    45. the NCAA has never been kind to Hawaii but we’ll see what happens. If you look at Pablo ranking right now, UH is around 35 which should be enough for at-large. if they look at regional balance, UH is No. 3 in the West region.

    46. what are you talking about in terms of calling for the coach’s firing? Haven’t heard what you call “a lot of fans’ responses?’
we won’t know if the season is over until next Sunday

  48. rabbit ears November 18, 2017 9:03 pm

#46 Get HD. …….Don’t remember one blogger asking for Robyn to be fired.

  49. Ron November 18, 2017 9:42 pm

I don’t think anyone on this blog has ever hinted at firing Robyn. If they did it went over my head. I love what this team and this coaching staff have accomplished. We are losing 5 important members of the team to graduation but we have a talented group coming back. Noreen is the best all around volleyball player I have seen since Misty May. More importantly, I hope Kalei is ok.

  50. 2left November 18, 2017 9:50 pm

It was a nice moment after the post-match hand shake when Kalei was by herself on the bench, all the UCI players lined up to give her a hug.

  51. Duster November 18, 2017 10:07 pm

Reaching the 20 win mark and winning the last 4 matches via 3-0 sweep should count for something. This is not the same team that started the season. And 5 of the 7 losses were by 3-2. The won at CSUN and UCR via 3-2 but those were Saturday road matches against BWC opponent after having played a Friday match that CSUN and UCR did not have.

That defensive play by Granato where she rolled into the bleachers and that ended with Iosia’s tip shot has to be the play of the year.

  52. Ralph November 18, 2017 10:11 pm

Game replayed tonight at 11 p.m. Hawaiian Telcom 1082

  53. Warriorfan November 18, 2017 10:35 pm

Ugh hearing Kalei got injured on the last two points of the match is just terrible. Hope it’s not a torn acl.

Glad the Wahine took care of business and hope the rpi is good enough.

  54. noblesol November 18, 2017 10:37 pm

This Blog has picked a troll or two, I suspect. I’ve read most every post re UH WVB, here and VT, been to every match, spoken and listened to quite a few long time season ticket holders. No one has even hinted at a firing. Everyone who has a clue is impressed with how much better this team is now than at the start. Maybe came a bit too late, but it’s clear that this staff can coach and motivate, and that the players on this team are great students and people. They clearly love to play for each other and their supportive fans.

  55. Bleachercoach November 18, 2017 10:55 pm

Wow this team is so improved over the last part of the season. I love what Coach Robyn did implementing the 6-2..Maafala has added another dimension especially setting the MB’s with ease and her demeanor off the court has shown on the court. If this team receive an At-Large, we could surprise alot of teams. I wouldn’t have mind playing Cal Poly now! Congratulations to Robyn, coaches, and team with an AWESOME 20 WIN season!!
We deserve to be in the NCAA tourney. We are legit! My heart and prayer out to Kalei Greenly..Awesome Individual!

  56. shar November 18, 2017 11:27 pm

OK. I just may have read into a lot. I am not for that but I was speaking out when they were saying things like we should start looking for another coach. I know those were undercurrents because I did talk about it with the people I sit with at the games. I also have heard about one booster who said something similar (and I disagreed emotionally hard which is why I may have used firing while it may have been worded as start looking for a replacement) Sorry. I have just been upset about this and may have come out more strongly than intended. I got into a verbal spat with someone about it.

  57. shar November 18, 2017 11:27 pm

Game is being replayed on channel 31

  58. Kaimukian November 19, 2017 12:07 am

Way to finish strong ‘Bows! Looks like we had quite the crowd there as well. As for Kalei’s injury, didn’t see it live but the replay was pretty gruesome. You kinda see something pop as she is landing, so I pray it’s not too bad..Eh, coach Robyn not too bad ah first year 20-win season with a less than stacked Wahine team. Congrats, looking forward to next year but still believe in miracles lol

  59. H-Man November 19, 2017 3:23 am

Nikki Taylor masked a of faults or weaknesses in the team, so without her, the team is not as dominant as in past years. Nothing to do with Robyn Ah Mow Santos’ coaching. Hawaii has not been successful in recruiting the dominant, Fab50 type players. Hoping that Angelica can fill the void with her ability to recruit Europe.

  60. cappie the dog November 19, 2017 6:59 am

I am still bitter about how last season ended.

I think the opposing player purposely stepped on Nikki Taylor’s foot.

I was at a sports bar.

I was shouting, “Sweep the leg! Sweep the leg! Sweep the leg!”

  61. Islander Lee November 19, 2017 7:27 am

Hawaii’s RPI is now 40 according to realtimerpi:

    http://realtimerpi.com/ncaav/college_Women_volleyball_rpi.html

  62. T103 November 19, 2017 8:39 am

Man, so bummed I haven’t been able to listen or see the last 2-3 games. I would have loved to see Iosia swing and for UH to play a 6-2 offense, thats so rare for us. Keeping my fingers crossed that we get into the tournament, agreed that we are deff. a different team then when the season first started, for the better. So Cindy, u said selections was next week sunday correct? Thanksgiving weekend?

  63. mauna November 19, 2017 8:51 am

Pretty reliable source on VT says that, as of this morning, UH’s RPI is at 40.

  64. islandman November 19, 2017 9:49 am

    49. I thought we lose 6 players to graduation.
Glad to have seen Kalei playing the few matches.
Ma’afala has a very effective serve and is a good setter.

  65. EA November 19, 2017 10:56 am

    Emily Maglio post game interview:

    https://www.foxsports.com/west/video/1099193411752

  66. Kaimukian November 19, 2017 11:16 am

    61. Wait i thought RPI and standings were released on mondays? Is this just wishful thinking or a actual “official” leaking info..Oh well, can’t really get my hopes up cause Hawaii has been shafted before by the selection committee.

  67. FitTrainer November 19, 2017 11:52 am

Tough interview for Mags. She was probably more concerned about Greeley.

  68. islandman November 19, 2017 11:55 am

    54. … “I don’t think our game was real solid,” UH coach Robyn Ah Mow-Santos said. “Our team has to play catch-up all the time.” ( staradvertiser, 11-19)
    ———————————————————————————————–
” Junior Faith Ma’afala’s serving proved pivotal. The reserve setter’s hard floating serve with minimal rotation resulted in one ace during the spurt and three for the match.
“She’s just a huge presence on the court,” Ah Mow-Santos said. “She brings a lot of leadership. Obviously, her serve’s got some muscle behind it and it floats a little bit. She’s got a lot of tempo with the middles.”
Ma’afala demonstrated her presence by ignoring the heckling she received from members of the UCI men’s volleyball team.
“They were hilarious, so funny,” the redshirt junior from Kapolei said. “But that motivates me to just take my time, do what I’ve got to do. It’s just me and the ball at that moment.”

  69. Warriorfan November 19, 2017 11:59 am

It’s funny in previous seasons rpi is what hurt the wahine (for hosting privileges) but this season rpi may save the wahine and get them the at large bid.
I don’t think the NCAA has the guts to turn down late 30s/early 40s rpi wahine team with a win over a possible seed(baylor)

  70. rabbit ears November 19, 2017 12:02 pm

wow great D yesterday. Can only remember one dink hitting the floor. Served tough, not sure how many S/E we ended up with, but at one point is was only 3. Irvine’s s/e really hurt them though.
We got to get in, this team is peaking. Wonder if the NCAA even look at teams (film). Probable just RPI and cost.

  71. Ron November 19, 2017 12:03 pm

You are right Islandman, we lose 6 really good players. my mistake.

  72. islandman November 19, 2017 12:52 pm

    68. … UH 5 SA, only 4 SE’s.
    UCI, 0 SA , 10 SE’s .
    No reception errors for UH.
For digging, i saw Casey had some good ones.

  73. Warriorfan November 19, 2017 1:22 pm

Some good things today for the wahine
Vcu won their conference tournament so they won’t steal a bid, while high point loses and that means the wahine will leapfrog them in the rpi rankings possibly as high as 38 if baylor can knock off texas and earn a seed it would help also.
    Fingers crossed for the wahine.

  74. Warriorfan November 19, 2017 3:15 pm

Lea Monkhouse looks like the real deal.

  75. FitTrainer November 19, 2017 3:15 pm

Heard the Sandbows intersquaf final is played today, is there a link to watch?

  76. cappie the dog November 19, 2017 3:15 pm

I can’t find a site that predicts the field of 64.

  77. Warriorfan November 19, 2017 3:22 pm

It’s on spectrum oc16 not sure if they have a stream, sorry.
Lea Monkhouse might be better than Morgan Martin which is saying a lot. So glad The wahine will have her for four years.

  78. Ron November 19, 2017 3:25 pm

Sign Monkhouse to the indoor team. She is very impressive for a freshman.

  79. Warriorfan November 19, 2017 3:32 pm

Pani Napoleon looks very good also, definitely see both freshmen being part of the top 5 pairs. napoleon is very powerful

  80. FitTrainer November 19, 2017 4:05 pm

    75. Thanks Warriorfan!

  81. rabbit ears November 19, 2017 4:46 pm

72/76 I agree, Never seen a college female hit the ball so hard at Queens. Her HS tape is impressive too (indoors). Why was she not recruited for indoors??? I think she is taller then the listed 6-0″.

  82. Cindy Luis November 19, 2017 4:52 pm

    http://www.hawaiiwarriorworld.com/?p=45068
    new thread up for sunday
