Happy birthday to Maglio, RPI up to 47

Maglio was greeted by streamers in the Candian flag colors and a Happy Birthday sign posted above Gym I. Burns didn’t need a ladder to help put the banner up.

Hawaii finishes season this week at
135. UC Davis
74. UC Irvine

Practice today and tomorrow. They have the red-eye flight to LA Tuesday night
will fly up to UCD Wednesday for Thursday match then down to UCI on Friday for the Saturday match

Did ask Ah Mow-Santos about whether they’d accept a bid to the other tournament. She has had discussions with admin. Sounds like the general feeling is that they would turn it down.

    Happy Birthday Mags !!!
Wahine with a 47 RPI, moves into the picture. Win out !!!

  6. Optimist November 13, 2017 8:22 pm

If the Wahine win out they should go to the NCAA tournament unless there are upsets in other conferences post regular-season tournaments.
The most important thing if they really want to go to the tournament is that they have to believe that they can win it all.
At least this year if they go they shouldn’t feel slighted wherever they are placed regarding seedings and locations.
Off the Wall prediction, during their Heat game winning streak they will play a regional top seed in the second round.

    Sorry, eight not heat

Happy Birthday to Emily Maglio!! 🎂That’s such a fun photo. Thanks, Cindy, for sharing it with us. Love the low-key sentence about Natasha Burns not needing a ladder. 😉

Wishing the team safe travels and good, confident play this week.

They win out, there’s a chance for an at-large. But Hawaii is right on the edge and so are a few others. It could come down to the smallest of differentials between them.

  10. islandman November 14, 2017 6:23 am

Don’t they have to let the NIVC early whether they are interested and not just turn down an invitation later ?
I vote to accept , if invited.

First question: why do they fly to LA instead of San Francisco or Oakland to play in Davis? Is it because they have to buy a round trip ticket for all destinations instead of multi-city for a cheaper ticket overall?

Second question: If it takes more than three sets to beat Irvine and chances don’t look good for an at-large NCAA bid, will they still practice on Thanksgiving week?

Finally, will Robyn Ah-Mow take off time after the Irvine match to be with her family in Las Vegas during Thanksgiving holiday week?

I would attend if the Wahine hosted NIVC matches. I am a 13-year season ticket holder and go to the spring matches as well. IMO, NIVC should have 32 and not 64 teams, like the basketball NIT.

  13. Andrew November 14, 2017 8:53 am

I guess I’m in the minority on here in thinking they they should turn the bid down to the NIVC. I think that would be lowering the overall image of the program that has been considered among the elite since the 80s. Granted lately especially this season success has not been where the program wants it to be and the extra practice would be great, but it just seems that participating in a consolation tournament really lowers the bar. I realize the team and program is different than it was even from a year ago but I don’t think expectations of being an elite program should change because of that.

Pride is a deadly sin. The benefit of keeping the team together out weighs worrying about how others see us. We need to think long term. The coaches have done wonders with this team. The more time they have with their players now will pay off next year. I see us at least a top 20 team next year. Cal Poly is very beatable. If the coaches or the players are tired of playing then ok don’t do it.

#14 Thank you. It’s easy to say the grass is greener on the other side. I believe the coaches did well with this team also. The players also showed great respect for this group of first year coaches. All of them in terms of the positions they had. The team did well. Whether to go to the tournament or not should be a team decision.

  16. noblesol November 14, 2017 10:24 am

I think there is room for differing views re the NIVC. It’s not all bad if you think your program will in someway benefit more than it loses. For many small programs that never have hope of going to the NCAA tournament, maybe it makes some sense. But, in my view of it, participating in the the NIVC is basically an admission that your D-1 program is a D-1B program and your willing to take the hit to your program’s reputation. But if you are a program that almost always makes it into the NCAA tournament and you intend to continue to be, then it’s not ‘false pride’ to decline the invite, it’s practical. In that case, paying to play in the loser’s tournament would just be the insult heaped on the potential injury done to your program. And, as Cindy points out, give cover to the NCAA to start treating your program like it’s D-1B and bias against it as an at-large for the NCAA tournament.

  17. Warriorfan November 14, 2017 10:41 am

It should be up to the seniors IMO
I would turn it down not just because it’s an useless tournament but because it would give the ncaa an excuse to give the wahine the shaft whenever they are on the bubble again.
If the ncaa says no Let them enjoy their winter breaks with family, the extra couple of weeks of practice and matches will have minimal impact towards next season especially since the wahine have so many seniors.

When is the NCAA Tournament selection?

Being in a mid-major sucks! Wasn’t there talk a few years ago about the Power 5 potentially leaving the NCAA altogether?

  19. Warriorfan November 14, 2017 12:04 pm

Hope Uh announces the new warrior signings soon at this time last year they already had announced Gage signing in the official website and on social media.
Hope they announce it within a few days.

  20. Andrew November 14, 2017 1:16 pm

    16.

I agree, this tournament is basically a mid major tournament for teams that aren’t good enough for the real tournament. I’d rather not have this program associated with a pity pay in tournament that further shows the divide between the haves and have nots. People here may say image is not as important but it is to recruits. Recruits in the past wanted to come to Hawaii because this is an established and proven elite program. If they see UH starting to play in this buy in consolation tournaments, I’m sure that doesn’t seem elite to them. Not to mention if UH wins the whole thing, big whoop you won a tournament over teams that aren’t that good to begin with . Even worst if UH were to stumble at some point and lose. That would be worse than just concluding the season with a couple of wins and waiting and preparing for next year.

    11. i believe they are flying to LA. I could be wrong but the reason they would is that they’ll fly out of LA after the UCI match. easier to do round trip HNL-LAX-HNL then fly LAX-SAC-LAX. but i’ll confirm.

    11. don’t know what beating UCI in more than three sets has to do with anything. Hawaii has clinched second place. UCI can do no better than third.

Don’t know if coach would go to Las Vegas but I’d doubt it since team will be practicing that week of Thanksgiving.

The NCAA tournament selection is on Sunday, Nov. 26. The NIVC will then look at who is left and announced 64 teams late Sunday evening.
The first round will kick off Tuesday, November 28, with the event culminating on Tuesday, December 12 with the championship.
    More info here
    https://www.womensnivc.com/event-info.html
    Bottom line:
    >> Hawaii, finishing second in the Big West, would be an automatic berth in the NIVC.
    Highlights from the site
    >> A team that is offered an automatic berth by the NIVC shall be the team that is a.) the highest-finishing team in its conference’s regular-season standings, and b.) is then not selected for the NCAA Tournament
    >> Factors that are not taken into consideration at any time during team selection are host bids, location of school, attendance history, ability to host, etc.
    >> The NIVC will bracket similarly the NCAA tournament with an emphasis given to geographical pairings.
