I don’t understand. Why do people think HI can still win the conference? I can’t see anyone beating Cal P the rest of the way. Am I missing something.
I agree with someone else who said this team would have struggled under Shoji. There really isn’t much the coaches can do. The players have to play and if they don’t, well, we saw what happened. Unfortunately Granato played well tonight, but at this point, does it really matter?

like myself, i need to realize most times this season that this team isn’t the team we are use to seeing. they are in a rebuilding mode…we all knew things would change, we just gotta get use to it.
I agree, I think we are so used to UH being the top of our conference that when it doesn’t happen, we don’t stand for it, but seriously, lets get real. Even the best teams in all sports have rebuilding years. And I don’t know who had posted it in the previous thread about Shoji knowing he was gonna retire so he didn’t bother recruiting hitters… Um yea.. *eye roll* Serious? So let me get this straight, the coach who coached 40+ years would somehow just wanna leave the next coach high and dry, all of a sudden, after 40+ years, the love shoji would have for the team and state would grow cold and want to set them up for failure? Got it! Good train of thought. I’ll be sure to have you on the next investigative panel we need. And I’m SURE it was ALL in the plans to get colon cancer and have to retire soon. We all knew it was gonna be soon, but I think he had a season or two left. If it wasn’t for that cancer, I’m sure he would still be coaching this season….
I didn’t say Shoji didn’t recruit hitters, I said we’d be in the same position. We would still have an injured Greeley, a good but not great Castillo (due to not developing at one position), no true right sider, Granato that isn’t quite ready to be the consistent hitter, and Maglio who should be playing 6 rotations but has not been able to develop in the back row.
But even with all that, this team is doing well. A few points and they could have three more wins.
Its a win in the BW, but yeah tough season. Wish they could’ve given Mags a better send-off, but oh well. Hopefully future recruits can add some firepower to a pretty soft hitting team we have rn..I know some may be upset at that comment, but if we are honest that’s obviously what cost us this year. I’d say half of these long rallies would’ve ended on the second or third swings with our past teams. Looking forward i hope we get back to top25 status by 2 years from now at least, and i know thats being optimistic.
13. is someone saying they can win the Big West? they had a slim chance if they had beaten Cal Poly but Poly would have to lose three and Hawaii win out for it to happen. seriously doubt it.
17. UH didn’t win the conference as recently as 2014 when Wahine finished second. UH likely finishes second this year. the difference is Hawaii’s RPI this year puts them on the bubble for an at-large.

Does anyone know if D1 volleyball scouts use radar guns? Sry if its a silly question, but maybe it can help judge power in hitters? Idk just wondering
unfortunately coach robyn seems to be tied up in needing to get the team to focus on passing than practicing on some serving including changing the serving up. if someone is not passing well enough especially being aced 7 times, they need to rotate out of the backrow and be relegated to 3 rotation front row player especially if she doesnt do offense backrow attack anyways. there are greater outside hitters (terminators) that are best as 3 rotation front row players. ill name one alexa gray.
as for serving, its just like 113 agreed with me on the previous thread:
“all servers (except spin servers) maybe , should just stand and serve (better %)”
otherwise relegate them to underhand serve, not like the opponent can legally attack the serve anyways. spin servers can also decide to stand and serve if jump topspin is not necessary or needs to be more cautious.

Late comment on the Cal Poly match, I ask, “Why was Granato set with the score 15-16 and the match on the line in the 5th set when her hitting percentage for the match was around .000?”
20 – I guess I misunderstood. People kept saying the season isn’t over. I guess I interpreted it as people were thinking there was still a chance that they could still go to the playoffs if they won the conference because no one would ever believe the NCAA would select HI if they didn’t win the conference. In my mind, the season is over. They are just playing out the rest of the season to remain in second. The only way the NCAA would select HI for the playoffs is because of tradition and we all know the NCAA doesn’t have a heart when it comes to HI.
27. the season isn’t over. UH went as an at-large in 2014 when finishing second. and in 2013 when Wahine were tri-champs but lost on the tiebreaker.

Hoping skyler and sophia play beach, playing beach improved Mags game immensely and think it will do the same for them also.
Where was Ross? She was needed in the back row. Maybe she was hurt. Not giving the freshman any playing time was a mistake. Castillo has always been somewhat hit or miss in the back row. Granato will always be consistently inconsistent. It is too bad that the rest of the Country will not get to see how good Maglio, Kahakai, and Iosia are. Especially Emily who has come from not being wanted by Dave to the star of the team.
May i recommend quitting this BS regarding Shoji not wanting Mags. Who was the Head Coach? Who made the final decision? Where does the buck start and end?
Mags is a SPECIAL person and player, she shared 4 years of her life with us and has the greatest facial expressions ever; we are blessed to have her.

It’s kind of silly to be sending everybody over to beach to increase their skill set. There would not be enough bodies to conduct any meaningful off season practices.
I would prefer those players remain indoors and work on their timing and chemistry.
Sure some player improved with beach but others do not(like Castillo) so I’m not so sure dumping players on to Jeff Hall is a solution to our problems.
Some just got to work harder or maybe be a little more focused. For some, volleyball is a hobby. For others it’s a passion. Good players see volleyball as a passion. Average players see it as a hobby.
Also in one earlier post game interview, it came out by one of the commentators something to the effect that Dave was kind of wanting not to recruit another setter when Norene was available since he said he had two setters already. So Dave was kind of wanting to wait a year.
Tako, the comment about Dave not wanting to recruit Emile came from Dave’s mouth and is now considered a joke on him. Lighten up.
I’m not so sure about Oglivie after watching the finals last night. Yes, 18 kills, but 78 swings, 17 attack errors, and .013 hitting. She was negative for most of the match against KS-Kapalama which has a front line averaging under six feet. She can dig, pass, and serve though. But she’s undersized for Div I NCAA and she’ll likely be wildly inconsistent in the front row unless she can learn to tool the block and hit off-speed. Right now, everything is a blast into or around the block. When she goes high it frequently sails out. Anything tight to the net and she’s trapped. She’s no mystery to KS-Kapalama which pretty much had her number.
A player to watch though is Maluhia Maa, who came in for KS-Kapalama in the second set and practically brought them back single-handed from down about 8 points to a second set win. She has a cannon for an arm. Although her all around game isn’t well developed yet. I don’t think they let her play back row last night. But she is one to watch. Maa is I believe Lisa Strand-Maa’s daughter.
Dont see a maa coming to UH anytime soon.
And it’s a high school match, Oglivie started off terribly and worked her way out of it, still remember manu Olevao hitting zero in the championship also and she was okay in college.
Oglivie is needed for her passing and defense, akeo for her smoothness and just innate play making ability. They are both undersized but like with Kanoe/coach robyn/kanani it doesn’t matter they make up for it with volleyball skills.
Think its time for the big west to have a conference tournament, the men apparently will have one also.
#35, It looked like a number of the players on both sides hit heavier balls than the Wahine seem to hit. That appears to be innate like the ability to throw a 95mph fastball, and the ability to vertical jump 35 inches. However, the appearance of heavier balls may be due to the variety of balls the Wahine hit depending on the set location and block formation, and the split second decision being made on whether to let it rip, hit a tip shot to an open location or keep the rally alive to be able to score on defense.
35. Sounds like you’re describing Granato. After three years of Div1 vball, very little improvement.
Re:39 that’s false Mckenna G has improved dramatically from her freshmen year, she is someone that is not good as the top offensive weapon though.
She has been a workhorse though despite reallg struggling in a few matches the wahine would be far worse without her.

Thanks Tako. Who knew Dave had such a good sense of humor. ( I sort of did). I really enjoy it when he gives commentary on the games, it feels like inside information. I don’t see Oglivie as a savior for the program but she should make a great libero.
40. Like Tai Manu Olevao before her, fans look at Granato’s shortcomings rather than appreciate the fact that they were both better than any other OH’s on the team.
Hi Cindy. I always enjoy the conversations on these threads. I read most of them (not all) so I hope I didn’t miss a convo about this in the past – but why hasn’t Kalei Greeley played more this year? Did she not progress out of her injury as much as anticipated? I enjoyed watching her play as a frosh/soph. If I remember, she was a 6 rotation player. She wasn’t necessarily a terminator at the net but was a strong left side, steady and consistent (at least I thought so). Thx again for all you do to keep us mainland fans up-to-date.

Sorry I couldn’t watch the high school girls state volleyball championship. Same reason I can’t watch OC Sports online. No cable in my area. I did follow live scoring and noted that Oglivie started slow and then picked up her pace.
Last year Oglivie was state player of the year. This year – a letdown. Maybe next year she’ll grow and do better. Same with Adlee van Winden of Cal Poly. She was Big West Freshman of the Year. In her sophomore year she was a dud, didn’t even make the All Big West t Team. Now, she greatly improved in her junior year as she was instrumental in defeating Hawaii twice. No doubt she’ll make the All Big West Team this year.
If I follow the van Windens so much, that’s because I watched their mother, Kelly Strand and their father, Jim van Winden, play at Cal Poly over 30 years ago, so I’m a big fan of the whole family.
By the way, let’s not pass judgment on Oglivie so early. Give her a break.

Wahine still have a shot at making the post season if they can finish out strong. How badly does this team want to make it there?
KSK and Maryknoll have some very good D1 talent.
Not sure how anyone can knock Granato this season. She gives it her all every night. Without her the wahines would have loss 1/2 of their matches. Because Maglio only plays 3 rotations. Granato has a bigger impact on the team. Yes, her service errors drive me crazy also. And yes I am a big Maglio fan.
The Div II champ, Le Jardin had a couple of nice NCAA Div I players. Julia Fisher, 6’1″, played six rotations in the final. She served very well, hit bombs from all over the court, had 23 kills in four sets, hit .293. Natalie Piper, about 5′ 10″ maybe 5′ 11″, was a go to and out of system player. She had 22 kills, 73 swings, hit .164, had 19 digs, served and passed very well, and hit the pipe out of the back row as a 1st option in the offense. I think I heard one of them was headed to USF. It can be hard to gauge how well the Div II players will do against the size and speed they’ll see at the next level, but I believe these two will likely see a lot of court time.
I think we all worry about recruiting. The State has failed to provide the funds needed to make a degree from Hawaii as sought after as most of the other schools in the Big West. You can not blame kids who go to the mainland for collage. Parents are not spending their money on private schools just to see their kid go to UH. That leaves us the public school kids to recruit to UH. Hawaii still has enough allure to attract kids from California and that is where we need to concentrate. 40 million people who still think we are paradise and compared to California (except for a collage education) we are. Robyn will figure it out, she has been a winner her whole life and will continue to be one given the opportunity. I hope I did not offend anybody, these are just my options and I have been wrong many times in my life.
Most everyone is interested in who the Wahine signs, mainly, it is the door to the future. With quality recruits and good coaching you’ll probably have a viable and sustainable program. Both the Men’s and both Wahine VB teams’ (indoor and sand) are shining examples of this.
Maybe more so for the Wahine because of it’s celebrated history.
Believe Robyn and Angelica are the perfect coaches. We’ll see how they do with recruitment,
with Shaney leaving they still have 3 openings for next year. Who knows they may defer and target the 2019 class, they have one verbal committment (Riley W.) thus far. Go Bows – finish with wins and let’s hope for a at large berth.

quick couple of comments
The Big West men are having a tournament, their first year of the conference. All six teams will go. It is at Long Beach in April. Hawaii will host the following year. Hosting, at least for now, will be on a rotating basis.
Don’t know if having a BWC women’s tournament is a good idea. it would have helped fill Hawaii’s schedule this year at the end with the Wahine having two bye weeks.
Granato had improved a great deal from freshman year. she’s also carrying a much heavier load this year.
Ross struggled vs. Cal Poly.
Re: freshmen playing more. They like what Burns is doing so that’s the MB option with Maglio. When do you suggest they would have put in Howling or Williams? there was a thought of Howling to Opp but she hasn’t practiced much there. When they threw her in a few weeks ago, that was with Koelsch struggling. Koelsch did not struggle on Saturday.
