Naeole resigns
Chris Naeole made it official, announcing his resignation (through his lawyer) as the offensive line coach.
He cited “certain philosophical differences with the handling of disciplinary matters in the program.”
At least four players were suspended for the Sept. 23 Wyoming game, and three others for last week’s game against Colorado State. But one of the suspensions was out of the football program’s jurisdiction and was referred to either the Office of Judicial Affairs, which handles violations of the student code of conduct, or the Office of Title IX. After a full investigation, UH spokesman Dan Meisenzahl said, “the appropriate office determines the disciplinary action, which can range from no further action to expulsion.”
No UH player served more than a two-game suspension.

The TEAM and coaches need to dial in like a lazer and win this game tomorrow. If this game is lost then the whole season may be lost, that’s how big a game this is! With Unga now gone for the season and the other injuries we have, some new guys and the regulars must play at the top of their game. This game is BIG, it could determine our Bowl status and the MENTAL outlook for the rest of the season!
Naeole is a GREAT Coach. Hope he finds his way back, for good!

Hope they don’t do all pass plays on their first 3 series as they did so the CSU game. Even Kanoa asked Rolo that question and he couldn’t answer it. Maybe that’s why Chris got upset with Brian and Stuzman calling those pass plays instead of using his offensive lineman to open the holes. Chris got overruled on those 3 series.
6. If the opponents stack the box with 8 players, then pass most every down. That’s what CSU was doing or something like that in the first part of the game.
After rumors swirled about the future of University of Hawaii offensive line coach Chris Naeole’s future Thursday, the five-year veteran coach resigned Friday afternoon citing philosophical differences in discipline.

Naeole released this statement through his lawyer Richard Wurdeman Friday afternoon:
I’d like to thank the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the people of our state, for not only allowing me to serve, but also in supporting me as a member of the Rainbow Warriors coaching staff over the last four and one-half years.
In my heart, I believe I served the program and student-athletes to the best of my ability, and with the same work ethic, desire, and passion to excel that pushed me at all levels of my playing career.
However, due to certain philosophical differences with the handling of disciplinary matters in the program, I’ve offered my resignation as the offensive line coach. I have always believed in the integrity and principles of what our community and the University stands for and those same beliefs are hat I have always tried to instill in my players.
I have expressed my thoughts with the coaching staff and the Athletic Department, and I know the same holds true with many of the other dedicated coaches throughout the entire University of Hawaii athletic ohana.
I will miss the fans, the support staff, and the faculty who have been so supportive of the program, as well as the young men I’ve had the privilege and honor of coaching, teaching, and mentoring at the University of Hawaii.
I extend my Aloha and well wishes to a great University, and to all of the people of Hawaii.

Okay, I don’t have all the facts, but philosophical differences in discipline? Really? Because of the suspensions? Too harsh? Too lenient? So who now is really doing a disservice to the players. I would have preferred Coach Naeole man up until the end of the season if that’s the reason. Seems like a grandstand move like you got the players back or something. I wish him well, but I do not think highly of his exiting in this way. Oh well, next MAN up! Go Warriors! jmho
I think a big loss—I really liked his coaching style. That said, there is someone, yes, former teammate, so Iam biased. But very well known HS football camp coach, placing dozens if not hundreds of Hawai’i kids in D1programs, and a former bow great, Brian Derby recently retired from HFD…..somebody holler at that charger!!!!
If you’re a coach, you make the same commitment as you expect from your players. You fight through the hard times & see it thru (to the end of the season at least.) You never give up if expect to be a Winner.
I’m sure Coach N preached this too. Sad he, himself, can’t follow thru . . .

Well, it’s hard to say what happened, but I “philosophical differences” is a pretty good phrase. Based on the subject of the dispute, it seems unlikely that anybody with legitimate detailed information is going to be able to explain this and still meet their ethical requirements. It is a shame this happened, but I am glad that everyone is able to move on in professional manners.

Right now for this team all that matters in winning in Reno, after all that’s why ou play the game-
Disappointed in lose of Chris, but Maddog50 is right! This is both a winnable and must-win game for Warriors. Our offense has more consistent than Nevada but it is important that our defense show the same intensity that it had at Wyoming when it allowed only 269 yards. Given the sudden coaching change, focus on executing is important!

Brian Derby would be the best thing ever happened to UH. The big boys would stay home for him. The boys would give better effort and Derby would get these boys to drop some weight and become quicker and better in all areas.

Sad to see Coach Chris leave. I noticed an improvement to the line play. DSJ is finding some daylight and the run game is getting better.
Philosophical differences in regards to discipline? Interesting disagreement. Could be anything but sad to see this as an issue.
Differences in coaching philosophy, goals, recruitment, game planning etc…seems a lot different than discipline approaches.
Hoping this doesn’t affect our Warriors and take away from their focus.

If you plan to attend the UH game in Reno this Sat; buy a ticket in Section L or M; this is where Hawaii fans are sitting including my group of almost 40 fans who are in L. My friend, Rolo’s mom Lori, will be there with her group of 60 family members and friends.
The O line hasn’t needed improvements.

UH issued an official statement on their website. You know, we appreciate Chris…wish him well…always part of Warrior ohana…blah, blah, blah.
Yeah, I’m not sad. I never got the sense that Naeole was a great technical coach the way Cav was or the way Derby probably is based upon his clinics.
I also don’t think Naeole is a good recruiter. Who did he bring in? Ulu-Perry, I guess, but that was more an established lifelong relationship rather than an actual recruiting job. Plus, if I was competing for a local kid with Naeole all I would tell the recruit is, “if Hawaii is such a great place to play, why did Coach Chris play at Colorado?”
Also, is Naeole a good judge of talent? Then why did Posa ride the pine all last year? I’m pretty sure he never played a down. What a waste!
Finally, if he quit because he didn’t like the play calling, as has been suggested, then he should have been fired before he quit. He’s not the OC, much less the the HC.
These days no matter who you are when a guy quits the message he usually gets is “don’t let the door hit you on the way out”… Nobody is indespensible. There is always somebody waiting for their chance in life.
Losing Naole is a huge loss for the Hawaii O-Line play. Hope Rolo has an ace coach to replace Naole or we might be seeing the not so good O-Line play of before Coach Naole came to save the O-Line.
Just beat Nevada-as a sidelight, remember Ben Clarke? A 4 year starter played hurt and injured. He went though about as much chaos as player could take-he took it he played…..he was a winner thru and thru. Be like Ben!!!!
Sad to see Coach Naeole go. The philosophical differences in discipline, I Just can’t see why walk away from team just for that. I may never know the full story.
On a more positive note, the long term future of UH and the Shidler College of Business seems sound with Mr Shidler’s huge long term donation. That is long term and impactful. The football team will be alright.

Maybe the suspended players deserved a disciplinary action more serious than what they were given. And, because the season was on the line, a lighter penalty was given to the players so the players could return on the field.
Coach Naeole didn’t agree with how it all unfolded and that was it. At every level, sometimes there are two sets of rules: rules for starters and rules for everyone else.
In any case, Hawaii still has over half the season to play. Nevada should be there only focus today. I’mean sure the coaches and players will adjust and adapt. Get a win. Go Bows!

Naeole stuck it through with UH through some pretty tough times under Chow. He could have left a long time ago. I think something must be pretty bad for him to walk away like this. Either direct conflict with Rolo or principle stance against higher ups. My guess is it is an issue with Rolo by the way he left him out of his statement.
One account was that Chris was told not to attend practice those two days, then the HC said he had quit.
If that is so, then Chris did not initially quit.
