He has more zip on his passes, but still isn’t 100 percent. Although he now estimates he is up to 90 percent. • The offensive line looks like this: LT Aaron Kia, LG Brysen Ginlack, C John Estes, RG Clarence Tuioti-Mariner, RT Keoni Steinhoff. OL coach Brian Smith said LT […]

Sen. Tsutsui to chat today

By Stephen Tsai on September 24, 2008

State Sen. Shan Tsutsui, vice chair of the Ways and Means Committee (you know, the money folks), will be the chat guest today at 1 p.m. Please join us. * * * Greg McMackin will now allow family members  of the players to attend practices today and tomorrow. He is closing practices to the general public to work on key strategy. McMackin said the practices will be open to “the press.” Hey, I guess that’s too bad for TV folks, […]

Colt has faith in Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on September 23, 2008

Colt Brennan said he follows the Warriors closely, and is confident the offense will bounce back in Saturday’s game against San Jose State. “We’ve gotta get our groove,” Brennan said. Brennan’s parents, Terry and Betsy, will be attending the UH game. Meanwhile, Colt’s Redskins will be playing the Dallas Cowboys. * * * Tyler Graunke threw during 7-on-7 drills today, but was held out of team drills to rest his sore right hand. Head coach Greg McMackin said he does […]

Graunke is back (sort of); busy day for UH trainers

By Stephen Tsai on September 22, 2008

Quarterback Tyler Graunke threw passes during warmups, but did not participate in 7-on-7 drills. He said there was some tenderness in his right thumb, especially when he pulls it away from the right index finger. But he said he will undergo “triple treatment” today, and will practice tomorrow. He said he will play in Saturday’s game against San Jose State. Also practicing today were running backs David Farmer and Leon Wright-Jackson and defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea. Defensive tackle Fale Laeli […]

Missing Blaze? Missing Aloha Stadium?

By Stephen Tsai on September 21, 2008

Happy birthday to UH athletic director Jim Donovan and Aaron (Ronnie’s son). * * * Whether Blaze Soares returns from a calf injury this week is not as important to the Warriors as San Jose State believing he will return. Head coach Greg McMackin said he wants to play play-makers, and Soares is the Warriors’ biggest hitter. In last year’s meeting, Soares was instrumental in forcing a fumble that sparked the Warriors’ comeback victory over the Spartans. Until that point, […]

Graunke cleared to practice

By Stephen Tsai on September 20, 2008

Greg McMackin said that Tyler Graunke has been medically cleared to practice. Because of the bye, the Warriors have an extra day of practice during game week. (They usually do only conditioning drills on Monday as a way to recover from the past weekend’s game). That should be helpful because Graunke, despite his experience, needs to work on his timing with his receivers. The coaches noted that Inoke Funaki had a good week of practice last week. The way it […]

No bye week for UH recruiter

By Stephen Tsai on September 19, 2008

This weekend’s bye will allow the Warriors to focus on recruiting. Assistant coach Ikaika Malloe arrived in American Samoa last night in search of talent. He estimated there are about 15 or 16 “legitimate” Division I-A prospects there. Six high schools field teams. “I lucked out on the perfect weekend,” Malloe said. “They’ll all be rivalry games. The emotions will be big. They’ll all be at one stadium.” Malloe has never been to American Samoa. But as an assistant coach […]
